Well...

It was my first official duathlon as a Swami but I raced in my All3Sports.com uniform, they've helped me out so much this year (My top is blue and green so it was still Swami’sish).  If anyone needs Tri Specific Gear feel free to use USAT10 as the coupon code when ordering for 10% off from their website.!

So yeah - the Solana Beach Duathlon . . .  (no swimming for Sam)
The first run (1 mile) felt okay.  I was looking for something close to
5:00, but thought about transition too much near the end and lost some ground and ended up with a 5:16.

Transition went really well and I came out in fourth place (passing 5).  I tried wearing Pyro Platform pedals (pedals your shoes velcro onto) since the race was so short and it helped me get on the bike fast.  But that’s all the good it did.  My shoe came untied in the velcro and I couldn't get it strapped all the way in.  For the whole bike I couldn't get a full pull out of my left leg which threw me.  It took a bit to pass third place (my coach Chris Maund of Chek Institute - lactate testing/diet analysis).  Then I saw the top two triathletes who had just started the bike, so I had someone new to catch and that helped push my average speed up to 24.2 mph.  As much as I love my Scott CR1 I think something a little more aerodynamics would have been ideal on this course.  None the less she performed amazingly and scored me the 2nd fastest bike time of the day.  I know last year I had the fastest bike split but Kenny Souza showed up; what do you want from me.

I came off the bike tied for 2nd place.  Coming out of transition I stepped on the timing mat the same time Kevin G (2nd place) did so his chip didn't register a time.  And that's where the good times ended.  My pyro pedals used slightly different muscles than my regular cycling shoes and I began to cramp.  My coach caught me at the 1 mile marker and put almost a minute on me in the last two miles.  My legs finally came back and with 3/4 of a mile to go.  I felt good and pushed my heart rate up to 208 for the last ¼ mile - but it was too late.

48:08, 4th over-all, not too bad considering the field, but I did beat 2nd place in my age group by 13:27 so that made me feel better.

It was great seeing a few Swami's (and the ever present Camp Pendleton Tri Team) out there hopefully that number will increase as people come out and give it a TRI!

Now about that Talon SL.  Road geometry - yet aerodynamic.  Kind of like a Carbon Soloist but about $1599 cheaper!  Does anyone have any feedback?
