Hello to all the new faces that have joined the club recently and
feel free to ask questions, chat about racing or what have you.
While this group is moderated that is more of a way to keep message
SPAM down as well as stop abusive, inflamatory and or just plain
nonsensical e-mails to a minimum. I usually ok most messages that
fall within the guidelines I set up which are not very stringent @
all. So have fun, hoepfully learn a thing or two and make some
friends.

Dave,
I saw those computer aided selections of yours spanked some cards
Sunday! I wish I hadn't been out of town or I could have cashed in.
Keep up the good work and I'll see you at the races this weekend!
Vikki :-)
Hello group members,
This is just a friendly notice to let you know that all selections
this week (3/29/04 to 4/4/04 will be free! They are posted in the
frre stuff section of the site so enjoy. It will also give you folks
a chance to get aquainted with our newest analsyts Marty & Jake who
are covering a few of the bigger harness meets in the country. We
also made a few changes to other areas as well such as the ability
to offer detailed analysis for any card thoroughbred or harness with
24 hours notice. The fee for that will be $10 & while we cannot give
that away for free during this week it will be available should any
of you need it. The price for any regular detailed analysis is still
the same $5, a bargain in every sense of the word since we are the
only site good enough to back up our selections with a guarantee!
Good luck to all & may you never be DQ'd & win every photo!

The only sure thing in racing history!
Well, folks pool 2 for the Kentucky Derby & Kentucky Oaks futures
has just opened and I seem some potential value in them as I look to
connect on another Funny Cide this year (I had him in pool 1 last
year for which I was rewarded with a $188 dollar payoff. In fact the
only two horses I bet last year ran 1-2 in the Derby making my
futures record to date 3-6 which I think is pretty damn good.)
First of all in the Derby the two horses I like a bit are Tapit &
Rock Hard Ten.
Tapit runs on Saturday in the Florida Derby so you may want to wait
to see that race before betting on him. A moderate finish is ok,
dead last, a win or a close up in-the-money finish are not. The
latter two will depress his value while the former might mean he
will not run. Bear in mind this is his first start this year so he
should need the race though his trainer is notorious for having
horses like this ready to go off a break.
Rock Hard Ten is a lot lighter raced then I like @ this stage of the
game but he has looked so good in his two starts to date that if he
is near his line of 50-1 it may look like a gift after the fact. He
has the breeding to go this far now all he needs is the seasoning &
a route race. Do not go crazy on this one but 50-1 is reasonable
odds to offset the risks.
In the Oaks, there are only 3 horses worthy of considering, they are
Ashado, Halfbridled & Madcapescapade. The latter maybe the only to
offer any significant value as well as having the potential to be an
absolute freak. However, if either of the former two are above 3-1
or 2-1 in the pools take the shot because on Oaks Day neither will
be that big. Good luck to all.

For those who did not notice we began to offer computer aided
selection coverage of Fonner Park last week when that opened. The
computer aided selections should start to settle in this week as it
now has data to work with. Good luck to all.

The Handicapper
A racing form, pen-marked
with conclusions, takes a break
with a tip-sheet on the spread
of a long shot bet
in his head
Deli chicken skin and bones
go cold in a plastic coffin.
Headstones of drained and bent
popcans send cigarette smoke signals
to a scouting-party of flies
picking the winning horses he tries
He ain't no railbird.
He knows his stuff,
Handicapping ponies can be tough.
But it is what he does best,
Five nights a week its not a guess
Before the starting-gate bell
If you ask him he will tell
Luck, good or bad,
flashes the whitest
white known to man,
behind the eyes
of those
that daves picks did play
get in line cause it will surly pay
James.H
James,
Relax. Everyone has bad days. The 9th was a nice box hit for an
exacta & most of your analysis made sense. From a vlue standpoint
your handicapping was spot on but the Fairgrounds is playing very
chalky this season & that is the death pf the value player. However,
do not change your approach to fit the track. This past summer @
Saratoga was exceptionally chalky but I did not change my approach &
while I have had better seasons for sure this year was not all that
bad though & were it not for a DQ that cost me a $40,000 pick 4 &
Pat Day riding like an idiot on Travers Day w/ a 43 & 1 half mile
going 7F I would have picked up another pick 4 for about $15,000
that I would have had multiple times. These things happen & while
that does not make you feel much better @ the time the best thing is
to just keep plugging away or you might as well give this game up.
One thing I did notice that stuck out as memorable in your picks was
you mentioned that a horse was not bred to go a route but that his
trainer did well w/ that type. In that case I almost always defer to
the breeding side because a trainer cannot usually get a horse to
outrun it's pedigree when you are referring to distance limitations.
For that matter, trainers can often not get dirt horses w/ no grass
pedigree to handle that surface even when the trainer is a master
grass trainer. There are however, more exceptions to this rule than
the distance one. Hope this helps some & it is not meant as a shot @
your handicapping but merely an observation.

Hello all,
First, welcome to all the new people & thanks for the compliment
James it is appreciated. Second, about posting things to this club,
I approve almost everything that is not offensive, derogatory or
just plain rude. If someone does not like my picks for a race or a
track you can & are encouraged to say something but be polite about
it & wait for my explanation as to why I picked a horse.
Sometimes picking ahead of scracthes, weather & assorted other
changes is not easy & I have not the time to adjust every track's
selections even when I get that information. Anyone's picks,
including mine, should be used as a tool to aid your own
handicapping. The point of this game is about making money, period.
It is not about volume of winners though @ a certain level you
should have a good mix of volume & prices. I pick horses to that
end. I try to beat the favorite whenever I can but that does not
mean that I toss them out of the handicapping equation. My win
percentage as a selector has been about 30% (slightly below the
track favorite hit rate) but I have shown a flat bet profit for 4
years running & that is no easy feat. My actual win bet % for my
personal betting is about 34% because I know how to adjust my picks
on the fly after changes.
Anyway, people post what you like, have fun & hopefully we will all
learn a little something that helps us make more money in the long
run because that should be the end goal of handicapping horses.
