Subject: pickup this sunday
hi, I'm visiting atlanta this weekend for a conference. I was hoping to
squeeze in some disc if possible. Is there a reliable game and can I
get there by public transportation from downtown atlanta?
thanks in advance
howard
I was waiting until I was sure that we'd settled into Coan before asking the Rick to change their website. Even though we've been knocked off the field occasionally when other activities are there, I feel comfortable listing the Middle School as our "official" meeting site, and I'll contact Rick. I know there are a few people who prefer other options - for various reasons - but I think this is the best option for continued success of the game. As always, I'm open to intelligent discussion on the matter.
Thanks for continuing to support Sunday pick-up ultimate. I look forward to more play.
P.S., I intended to send this last night, but for some reason it didn't go. I went by the field yesterday (Sunday) at about the same time we'd be playing.
Subject: Re: [sundayulti] Re: Since Columbia's closed why not Renfroe for Sunday pick-up?
I'm in favor also. In fact, I went to a party on Saturday night where I had already started the ball rolling on that same idea. I've had pretty good response both on and off the list, and think we should have a pretty good turn out.
FYI, I went by Renfroe around 5:30 today, and the field was wide open. Given that it was beautiful today, I don't think we'll have much competition (and, as I said earlier, a Decatur High teacher is working on officially reserving the field anyway.)

we get into the heat of the summer, and this necessarily isn't a bad

hours of daylight: more than enough for our needs. Generally, the
start time "creeps back" as we get into fall and people get busier,
and at the change to back from Daylight Saving Time, we generally are
close to to a "3:30 sharp" time, in order get the game in before
dark.

We've been playing at Coan rec area just off Hosea Williams. If you
need directions, check the fields page at the afdc.com website.
People arrive 5ish and play gets going not too long after. The past
couple of weeks we've ended about 7.
hi rlatorra,
Welcome to Atlanta, and to the email list.
We'd love to have you join our games. I don't know that we've had anyone
from Nicaragua before, so
we'd love to hear about your experiences organizing games down there. We
gather a number of folks who have traveled quite a bit, so it'd be a good
place to share observations..
I'm not going to be there today due to a work commitment, but expect a
reasonable sized crowd if the weather holds. I hope you can make it out
soon.
Take care,
J.R.

As far as I know, we are still at Coan Middle School (I believe there are directions on the AFDC website to Coan Rec, which is right across the street). We've been starting closer to 5:30 recently. It's still so hot at 4:30. At least, I'm pretty sure that is when we have been starting.
Welcome to the email list. We hope you'll come join us.
For anyone who may not know, this weekend is the End of Season tournement for AFDC's summer league, so a number of our regulars will be up there and not at pickup today. Not everyone is in league, and not all the league players will be there today, but we'll still low-ish tournout today.
Starting next week, however, AFDC leagues out out for quite a while, and fewer folks play fall league. We typically get our largest turnouts in late summer and into the fall. In our old location, it wasn't unusual to have as many as 35 or more folks out.
Anyway, short story: lots of field space/playing time tday, more community starting next week.
See you out there,
J.R.

I floated the idea of returning to Renfroe for the Sunday pick-up game. The field is unofficially open (we're playing pick-up soccer there again). It's in much better shape than Coan. My reason for the change is the hard dirt and tuffs of grass at Coan tend to roll one's ankles. What's the group consensus?

I've found, as a rule, that Middle School fields work best due to the lack of varsity sports. The fields experience less wear & tear and don't provide a hardship for the school teams.

I'm really glad to see that there is discussion on how to protect the fields. Personally, i feel that it should not matter whether or not we use fields that the AFDC is using. We all live in the Atlanta community and there are a limited number of fields for use by all off us. If the fields are in danger of being torn up, then don't play. It that means that sometimes folks drive a distance and are disappointed, that is part of playing an outdoor sport. It happens to golfers and fisherman and tennis players.
Not only are these fields used by adults for sports, but these are still the fields that kids play on for school. We should also remember that if we protect the fields they will only be better for us in the future. The weather in Atlanta is great and there will be other sunny days. H ope to see ya'll out there then.

Toomer isn't an option this summer due to Sunday evening goaltie. And it doesn't solve the problem of using fields used by AFDC. Dan

Hei hei everybody,
Sam's comment the other week on the forums, and then the recent talk about rain today/yesterday
make me wonder if we should reconsider moving back to the Renfroe fields. I hate to be suggesting it, because I really do like coan more than Renfroe, by a good bit actually. But I am worried about the repurcussions for the AFDC, since they use those fields for league play sometimes. More importantly, CoA is in charge of those fields, so if we tear them up it potentially hurts our (and AFDCs) chances at fields all over the city. I'm just thinking that because AFDC
doesn't use Renfroe, if we tear the fields up there and get in trouble there won't be consequences to anybody besides us.
Another option, I guess, would be just to be hyper-sensitive to the state of the fields. This is a drag, because I know people are coming from far away, and it is always a pain to drive all the way, just to find that we can't play, then drive back. I know I certainly had no desire to do that on Sunday. But, I'm thinking, if we are going to play on fields the AFDC uses, we should abide by their standards for field conditions. I think that pretty much would mean not playing on the days that it rains, unless it has completely dried out.
Anybody have thoughts/alternativ e suggestions. It's a drag to have to think about all of this again, after finally deciding on a semi- regular place. I really just don't want to step on peoples' toes, or get JLee and folks in trouble.
Hei hei everybody,
Sam's comment the other week on the forums, and then the recent talk
about rain today/yesterday
(both in the pickup forums on AFDC
website,
http://afdc.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=1990,http://afdc.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=2140)
make me wonder if we
should reconsider moving back to the
Renfroe fields. I hate to be suggesting it, because I really do like
coan more than Renfroe, by a good bit actually. But I am worried
about the repurcussions for the AFDC, since they use those fields for
league play sometimes. More importantly, CoA is in charge of those
fields, so if we tear them up it potentially hurts our (and AFDCs)
chances at fields all over the city. I'm just thinking that because
AFDC doesn't use Renfroe, if we tear the fields up there and get in
trouble there won't be consequences to anybody besides us.
Another option, I guess, would be just to be hyper-sensitive to the
state of the fields. This is a drag, because I know people are coming
from far away, and it is always a pain to drive all the way, just to
find that we can't play, then drive back. I know I certainly had no
desire to do that on Sunday. But, I'm thinking, if we are going to
play on fields the AFDC uses, we should abide by their standards for
field conditions. I think that pretty much would mean not playing on
the days that it rains, unless it has completely dried out.
Anybody have thoughts/alternative suggestions. It's a drag to have to
think about all of this again, after finally deciding on a semi-
regular place. I really just don't want to step on peoples' toes, or
get JLee and folks in trouble.
Thanks for your consideration,

I think we'll be OK. The field we used to rent across the street in the park is also usually empty. With the 2 at Coan High School & the 2 at Toomer (admittedly w/soccer likely being played), that makes 5 fields within a 1/2 mile of each other.

When I went by Coan two weeks ago, they were playing on the rec field. They told me it was intermittent - they didn't have a reservation or anything. They seemed pretty easy going, and said they were willing to share the field. Assuming they were the same folks, of course.
We did play at Renfroe last week, though I think it might be worth mentioning that I drove by Coan and there seemed to be a flag football tournament happening on both fields. I don't know if that is a one time thing, or a weekly event, but there was definately no space to play on Coan. I think Walker was open, though, but we might need CoA permission.. .
Hopefully Coan will be free this week. See you all out there.
