Just a quick reminder - this is the week (in fact, tonight!) of the time change, and with it, we move our game's start time up to 4:00pm. There has been some impetus to try to go to an even earlier time, but let's try this first and see how it works.
For those who may not know, this game goes year 'round, though obviously we get some drop off as the weather gets colder and less forgiving. In the past, we've scheduled additional games around/instead of the holidays, depending on how the days of the week have fallen. If I hear of anything, I'll try to pass it along.
Also, in the "keeping everyone updated" category, our field-mates and occasional sparing partners, Sequence (a mixed, club-league team) acquitted themselves quite well as regionals a few weeks ago. There was some concern that they might not even get out of sectionals, but they did, and were seeded 12th. They exceeded those expectations, going 3-3 on the weekend to finish 9th. Alas, only the top 2 team advance to nationals, so we probably won't seem them much until they start gearing up for Terminus in the spring. I hope you'll all join me in wishing them congratulations on a good season, and welcome them as they join our pick up from time to time.
I have a few items in the lost and found. I've been carrying a Gray "ESPN" (Medium) T for a couple of years, along with a growing collection of discs; feel free to claim them if their yours. I've also been bringing a set of 8 cones that someone left from this game. I'm happy to keep doing it, but I'm not always the most punctual person, so if anyone ever wants to guarantee that they're there and swing by on the way to the field, give me a ring and I'll leave them out for you. (I only live a couple of blocks from the field). My cell is (404) 314-3957.
Finally, I think Seann is looking for a VW Passat key he might have left there. VW keys are usually a metal insert that collapses against a plastic case, and I'm sure that he'd like to have back. Check your belongings.
That's all I have for now. It's beautiful out this time of year, and the conditions last week were just about perfect. If there's not a good showing now, there never will be.
This works better for me.

I've been asked to pass along a preference by the progeny-enhanced to move the Columbia start time to something like "4:00 pm, playing by 4:30", in the hopes that those with children can get home to put their kids to bed. In the past, we've normally gone to an earlier start with the time change in October, but if there's no objections, perhaps we could do it a bit earlier this year.
Rick Goldstein is trying to organize a game for today at Seminary field. I
think he had 4 or 5 confirmed after yesterday's game, and is trolling for
more. Give him a shout @ goldstein.rick@... if you think you
can make it. I think he's shooting for 5pm start.

I think Darin has it right - we've mostly been having 7 vs 7 w/ subs, and occasionally more, rain & tournies not withstanding. I'm probably going to get out there a little early today - my sister's in from out of town, and I'd like to get back before she flies out tonight.
I went last Sunday and we had 9 players. They would probably go somewhere between 3 and 5 in AFDC's rankings. They stated that two weeks earlier they had about 30 out there. My guess is there were not many people this week due to the EOS tourney.

I just wanted to acknowledge and express appreciation for the great turnout we had last weekend. With something like 30 people playing, it was great to be able to have a full game going and be able to sit out as much as I needed. It helps to defray this humid summer heat.
Certainly some of the thanks should go to the Southern Gentleman, who brought their nascent club team to the field. I can't speak for anyone else, but I enjoy it when club teams come out to the field; it elevates the level of play, broadens our exposure to other players and brings fresh blood to our game. More importantly, they brought beer, and were kind enough to share it with your faithful correspondent. Good luck with your burgeoning endevor!
My first time; assume we are on today at 5 pm ?

For the first time since Memorial Day at game time, there's no recent rain, immentent rain, current rain or pour, drenching or duluging rain. There's also no Mid-season tournament, Fourth of July weekend or beginning-of-summer vacation exodus. I'm looking for a full compliment of players.
As a precautionary measure, I checked out the field earlier. It's a little soft in spots, but mostly dry and quite playable. There is jungle-depth grass, however; bring machetes. (Also plenty of water - 88 & humid here).
For those who don't know (and might be contemplating a drive in today) today is Mid-season tournament for the AFDC summer league. Typically, turnout is fairly low on tourny days.
As for the weather, I'm optimistic. There's a somewhat heavy cloud cover, but it's been there all day and so far the rain has held off. I'm guessing it will be like most of the recent sundays - damp, but playable.
The turnout varies from week to week, but lately it's been good and we've had enough for a full 7 on 7 game and often a few subs. The age range is pretty wide - we get some high school age kids out now and then and there's usually a few geezers like myself (40s) too. The majority are probably in the 20-30ish range. The skill level is also pretty wide. We get decent players and play some competetive points, but it's also a low-key game, and we usually don't keep score until a game to 7 or so at the end. If you're a beginner, it's a good place to start and if you're experienced, you can still get in a decent workout.

Well said, Scott. Two weeks ago, with good weather, we had upwards of 25 players. For those of you wondering, we did play last week - recent rain not withstanding - and had 7's for most of a game to 11. In marginal cases like last week, I'll try to remember to post a message advising of weather & field conditions since I live just a few blocks away.
It's threatening pretty bad here right now - no rain, but plenty of thunder. My sense is that this will pass, and we'll have a situation like last week - wet until 4ish, but very playable after that.

I would second Scott's directions as the quickest way. The tricky part is the left turn onto Church from Lawrenceville Hwy. The turn is towards the crest of a hill about 1/2 mile after 78 dumps you onto Lawrenceville; i think it's the second light. If you miss it, you'll come to a 6 way intersection with N. Decatur & Medlock (L'ville becomes Scott Blvd here.) Either left takes you to Church street, then a right takes you into Decatur.
Alternatively, you can take 285S to Memorial Drive, turn right (going west) about 2 miles (?) to Columbia Drive, then right again (north) 1 1/2 miles to Kirk, and recognize where you are from last time. This is somewhat longer than above but a few less turns.
I used to live up that way. I found the quickest route to Columbia was to take 85 to 285 (toward Augusta). Get off at the Hwy 78 west exit (toward town). Stay on that in the left lane until it merges with Lawrenceville Hwy (rte 29).
Make a left on Church St and take that to downtown Decatur. Turn left on Commerce. That will curve around a few times and take you under the train tracks near College Ave. Keep going on that and it'll merge into Columbia Dr. Follow that past the Columbia Seminary and turn right on Kirk Rd. There's a parking lot on the right near the back of the Seminary. The field is behind the parking lot, down a small hill and surrounded by trees. From 85/Pleasant Hill Rd it'll take you roughly 30 min to get there.
These days people show up about 4:30-5:00 and we start playing by 5:00-5:30.

For those of you wondering if we played last week (or perhaps looking outside this afternoon) - yes, there was a game. Yes, the conditions were fine. Yes, we had plenty of people show up (7 on a side + subs, for the better part of two hours). Sure, we got wetter than a lobsterman's underdrawers, but there was plenty of good disc, and a little dampness never hurt anyone.
I imagine today will be much of the same. Grab your cleats (and a very thick towel) and come have a catch.

We got it too, though it does appear to be subsiding. I had expected that the field would be a jungle and I was going to go con machete & little hat with mosquito netting. Now I'm thinking hip-waders & row boat.

Of course we just got hit by a HUGE fifteen minute downpour, but I'm way south
of the field,
so I'm hoping it'll all be fine.
Peace.
I'll be there around 4:30. Finally be nice to get some
