Hi Chris,

Welcome to the area, and to the email list.

You mentioned that you'd never played in an organized group before, but that you liked playing frisbee. I didn't know if that meant you liked playing Ultimate, or just enjoyed tossing the disc around. In either case, you're certainly welcome, but if you're new to ultimate, I wanted to pass along some info that might be helpful.

Despite reputation (and sometimes outward appearances), ultimate is a pretty defined athletic endeavor that requires a little specific knowledge and a few demonstrative skills. Most of the things required to be a competent player are easily learnable with a bit of practice, and is, in my opinion, well worth the effort. There's a little information on our groups front page, and you can also check out Atlanta's major organization (www.afdc.com) or the national governing body of the sport (www.upa.com).

Our group, like most pickup games, is pretty laid back. Anyone is welcome, and there's no requirements to play other than to show up and get along for folks. Moreover, pickup is an excellent way to learn ultimate: recreation and enjoyment is placed ahead of competition, and game results - when score is even kept - are usually forgotten once everyone has left the field. Most importantly for new(ish) players, there's always a few people on the sidelines who are happy to talk about the game or throw the disc around.

Our group features a wide range of players - new folks looking to get proficient, intermediate players looking to improve their skills, older folks who just can't give it up, people coming back from an injuries or just long layoffs and trying to get their chops back. We even get some club players - people who play on teams that travel all of the country (and world) to play in tournaments - who just want an easy game to relax in or try some new things.

This is the time of year that we get our best numbers: Summer league (the major activity sponsored by AFDC) just had their end-of-season tournament last week, and fall league is still a month away. We'll get a lot of them that don't want to waste their having gotten in shape or that aren't ready to let go of summer yet. Club season is just gearing up, and those players will be looking for all the playing time they can get. Vacationers are mostly back in town, parents with children back in school will have a little more time to slip out and play, and many college students want to get a few more games in before they have to hit the books.

We'll be out there this week - weather permitting - at about 5 o'clock. Feel free to join us.

- J.R.
