Georgia USMD Ultimate Tournament for PKU Research and Awareness
Please join us on May 10, 2008 to support PKU research and awareness!
Phenylketonuria (PKU) is a genetic metabolic disorder. Individuals
with PKU cannot process a part of protein called phenylalanine,
which is present in most foods. Because of a genetic abnormality,
affected individuals lack or have very low levels of an enzyme
(phenylalanine hydroxylase or PAH) that converts phenylalanine to
other substances the body needs. Without treatment, phenylalanine
builds up in the bloodstream and causes brain damage and mental
retardation. The standard treatment consists of a strict diet very
low in phenylalanine and daily consumption of special formula
containing life sustaining nutrition. If the diet is adhered to,
individuals with PKU can grow up with normal intelligence.
Continued research is needed to ease the difficulty of the diet and
improve the quality of life for all individuals living with PKU.

Message from Scott
My son Joseph was diagnosed with Phenylketonuria (PKU) shortly after
birth in December 2006. He is doing well thanks to required newborn
screening and his wonderful nutritionists and geneticists who
continue to work towards new treatments. Thank you in advance for
helping to support the non-profit United to Support Metabolic
Disorders (USMD), which is dedicated to improving the lives of
children and adults living with Inborn Errors of Metabolism.
