2012 ANNUAL KID’S CRIT
The Twilight Criterium is pleased to announce sponsorship opportunities for this year’s Kid’s Criterium to be held in conjunction with the annual, world famous Twilight Criterium bike race in Athens, Georgia on April 28th. For only $100 your company or business can be part of this event that now attracts hundreds of children as well as their parents. Local schoolchildren will design a 3’ x 4’ banner for your business using information supplied by you. The banners will be hung along the Kid’s race course and your business name will be announced repeatedly over the P.A. system. This is a great way to support this growing facet of the “Twilight experience,” not to mention you will have rewards in heaven for your support. Respond to this email if interested or call David Crowe at 706-549-0097. Some of the Kid’s activities are listed below. Make checks payable to “Twilight Foundation.”

TWILIGHT KIDS ZONE PRESENTED BY ADDA
From 10:00 AM to 4:00 PM, the Twilight Kids Zone Presented by ABC Printing is open for kids to enjoy numerous activities. Face painting, music, fitness displays and activities, rides, moon walks, and more are a few of the activities available.

TWILIGHT KIDS CRITERIUM PRESENTED BY ST. MARY'S HOSPITAL
The Twilight Kids Criterium Presented by St. Mary's Hospital features races for kids ages 5-14. To participate you need a bike and a helmet. Bike races are run in heats. Kids under the age of 9 will start at 11:30 AM and kids 10 and older will start at 12:00 PM. Racers are grouped by age, type bike and gender. All kids receive t-shirts (with entry fee), a prize package, and recognition for their acheivement.

CHICK-FIL-A TWILIGHT BIG WHEEL RACE
The Chick-Fil-A Twilight Big Wheel Race gives kids 5 and under an opportunity to ride in their own race on trikes or big wheels. This event is on College Avenue in front of City Hall at 11:00 AM. Kids wishing to participate will need a Big Wheel or trike and of course a helmet. All kids receive t-shirts (with entry fee), a prize package, and recognition for their acheivement.

TWILIGHT KIDS PARADE LAP
All participants are invited back to ride in the Twilight Kids Parade Lap at 7:15 PM. All kids returning for this should meet at the Kids Zone on the 300 Block of College Avenue at 7:00 PM.

To All,

I am selling my Orbea Orca frame.  This bike when completely built with Durace was a 15.1 lbs bike.  I bought a new fork and have installed the headset.  The bike frame was sent to Calfee in California and was certified as structurally sound.  The auction has no reserve.

If it is a local pickup there won’t be any shipping.

To All,

If you have kids that like to ride and have thought about racing in the Roswell Criterium or the Sandy Springs Criterium please visit the Junior Flyers website and let me know if you are interested.  It is easy to join the team.

www.juniorflyers.org

Our goal is to introduce the kids to the sport of cycling and hopefully convert the entire family to an active lifestyle.

We hold “Open” practice on Monday nights at the Lebanon Baptist Church on Crabapple.  We teach skills of cornering, riding in a pack, paceline and the beginner skills like drinking while riding, how to use your gears and brakes effectively.  Even if all you have is a fat tire bike, we want you to ride and have fun!  We have skinny tire bikes you can barrow.  We also encourage the parents to ride with us and learn.  Why sit around and watch people ride?  Join us Mondays at 6:30 to 7:30 11250 Crabapple Road.

Our older juniors 15+ come and help the younger ones so it is a great environment for the kids.  We have many girls and many younger riders.  The ages range from 7 to 16. (We don’t limit the age of the parents) LOL.

Before I created the Jackson County Brevet (JCB), I am not sure I ever volunteered to help at any organized event for 12 yrs (ashamed to admit).  After JCB's 1st yr (w/88 volunteers), it has forever changed my perspective on this subject.  Since, I have & will volunteer for every ride I do.  I tell you this b/c I would never ask anyone to do something that I was not willing to do myself.

With that said, we need 125 Volunteers, yes 125, to pull off our 3rd annual Jackson County Brevet on June 16th.  We have many areas that you can volunteer and still ride in the event.  Please help us spread the word about Volunteers to your family/friends/co-workers/social groups, etc.

We will feed our Volunteers Breakfast and lunch, along with receiving our Special Volunteer Tshirt.  If you (or someone you know) wants to help, please...

2.  indicate your choice area to help

Sorry for the late notice!

Please help the first timers!  You remember when you showed up for your first group ride?  No?  Why was it so bad you don’t want to remember?  Don’t let that happen to the next guy or gal.  Be kind, say hello and welcome them.  When you are riding say hello to the person walking their dog or the person jogging.  They smile and say hello back.  It makes them feel good.  They then think: those cyclists aren’t so bad.  Help us build support and foster peace, yes by just saying hello.

Some one step up and make announcements, as I have a Cobb EMC meeting.  Thank you.

Come join us in Roswell, the first bicycle friendly community in Georgia.

Beautiful flats along the Chattahoochee coupled with spectacular homes along climbs

that can challenge the best rider.  We even ride past Chipper Jones’ house/neighborhood.

Three groups to choose from; all leave at 6:30 PM from Riverside Park,

575 Riverside Road, Roswell, GA 30075

A Group 20-23 mph average – 25 miles  6:30

B Group 18-21 mph average – 20 or 25 miles  6:30+

C Group 16-18 mph average – 20 or 25 miles no drop  6:30++

Our goal is to have a safe, friendly and challenging ride for all.

We support those with mechanical problems and flats. B & C groups

We do not use Aero Bars unless riding in the rear or front of the pack.

We do not use ear phones or ear plugs.

We obey traffic rules and try at all times to be courteous to motorist.

             We always wear helmets.

This communication is merely a way of notifying those interested in our Thursday Night ride.

To All,

I rode on Pine Grove the street after Hightower and before Lake Charles and it has been milled.  The lines are gone gravel everywhere and as you turn left at the light onto Lake Charles there is a pinch flat puncture ledge.  So be careful and ride neutral through that section.  Be sure that someone announces this ALERT today.

Subject: Heads-Up - Pending Detour on Woodland Brook - Early June to Mid-July
tcfatl2004

All,

Cobb County will be initiating a project to install new high capacity storm sewers on Woodland Brook very soon.

This project will take six weeks to complete.  Woodland Brook will be impassible during the period from early June until mid-July.  According to the Cobb County web site, the project will start just after Cobb County public schools break for the Summer.

It appears that we may possibly be able to detour the Tuesday night ride a few blocks around the construction zone, and are working to determine what this will entail.

If so, please note that such a route will use secondary streets which will be shared by detoured and local traffic.  As such, want to give everyone advance notice that such a detour route will be deemed as NEUTRAL - no exceptions - you'll be fined DOLLARS, not Swiss Francs.  So, if you simply can't stand taking your foot off the gas for a bit, you are cordially invited to spend the Summer at the Marietta Crit.

We are also considering the option of expanding the "short option" route, and eliminate Cobb County and three humps altogether, if a suitable detour isn't feasible.

The construction will impact other rides that go over the three humps (e.g. Buckhead Bellyache), so we have to think about how all of the rides will impact that area, and possibly impede detoured traffic.  Am certain that this construction will be invasive enough to local residents, much less to have a pack of zealots flying through their neighborhood.  Also, the roads under consideration are narrow and sketchy, so this mandate is for your safety, as well as theirs.

Look for a subsequent post to detail the specifics of the detour we select.

Here is an update on the Woodland Brook construction project (thanks to Trish Albert for sharing) ...

http://smyrna.patch.com/articles/changes-to-woodland-brook-drainage-project#c

Whereas the project is scaled back slightly, it remains a 4-6 week project to be performed in a window between end of school and start of school.

The formal detour routes traffic out over the bumps. However, Randall Farm / Orchard Knob is also being offered as an alternate. A lot of cut-through commuters will likely use this as their route because it is shorter.

We will likely route the Tuesday night ride over Randall Farm / Orchard Knob. However, this is problematic on several fronts. The route would go straight on Paces Ferry at Woodland Brook, climb Paces Ferry, turn left on New Paces Ferry, left on Randall Farm, left on Orchard Knob, right on Woodland Brook.

Climbing Paces Ferry and left onto New Paces will impede traffic, Randall Farm / Orchard Knob has speed humps, stop signs and is quite chewed up, and a lot of traffic will be squeezed into a very small space.

There really are no viable alternatives to route the ride out over the humps. So, we either NEUTRALIZE THE RANDALL FARM / ORCHARD KNOB DETOUR or eliminate the humps altogether.

We'll try the detour first, see how it works, then make a call.

The ride starts at exit 7 of Georgia Route 400, and will wind through Sandy
Springs, Milton, Roswell, Johns Creek, Alpharetta, and other scenic areas of
North Fulton. There are 9-mile, 23-mile, 60-mile, and 100-mile options.
The 100 mile ride is over 8500 feet of climbing up short steep hills that build
your base strength! Perfect training for that fall triathlon, or that late
season race, or maybe you just want to burn over 8700 calories! The 60 Mile ride
also ascends 5500 feet and will climb the "Three Sisters" same as the 100 milers
do. The Three sisters are three short climbs near the end of the ride in
Roswell. You will have cheering fans as you pedal squares up the Big Sister in
Mountain Park and Middle Sister as you pound your way through Wildwood Springs
and finally you will roll up the Little Sister in Waverly Hall. Look for the
local kids to have lemonade stands as an excuse to stop or use the cheers of
neighbors to help you up the hill!
