Giants 12-17-1 Padres 8-9-0, April 4th at Petco Park
On opening night, the Padres lost a slugfest to the Giants 12-8. Jake Peavy
(0-1, 36.00) was rocked for 8 runs in just 2 innings of work as San Francisco
battered Friars pitchers for 12 runs (all earned) and 17 hits. The Giants got
homers from Omar Vizquel, Moises Alou and Pedro Feliz in the contest, Vizquel
had 4 RBI in the game, Alou drove in 3 while Ray Durham knocked in 2. In all,
every Giant had a hit except Lance Niekro, and 6 different players had at least
an RBI. For San Diego, Philip Fitzsimmons went 3-for-5, with his 1st major
league homer coming off winning pitcher Jason Schmidt, a solo shot in the 4th
inning. Fitzpatrick registered 3 RBI in his major league debut. Also, Mike
Piazza looked good in his San Diego debut, going 2-for-4 with a homer and 3 RBI,
and Terrmel Sledge hit a solo homer while Josh Barfield had a sac fly RBI.
April 5 at PETCO Park: Giants 10-12-0 Padres 2-11-0
The Giants slugged 5 home runs and scored all 10 runs in the last 3 innings to
pound the Friars, 10-2, sweeping the 2-game series at PETCO. Moises Alou hit 2
homers tonight, he had 3 for the series, and Lance Niekro, Ray Durham and Mike
Matheny also hit big flies for San Francisco (2-0). Chris Young (0-1, 4.50)
allowed the first 2 homers in the 7th inning (Niekro and Durham-2 run homer) and
Scott Cassidy allowed 2 more homers the same inning (Alou and Matheny). 4 home
runs in the top of the 7th inning. Against the Padres. And this isn't 2008, it's
2006! Anyway, the Padres found a way to get hits off winning pitcher Matt Morris
and the Giants. Philip Fitzsimmons was 3-for-4 tonight, and he is 6-for-9 with 1
HR and 3 RBI after 2 games. Khalil Greene and Geoff Blum each had 2 hits. But
the Padres (especially their pitching staff) were roughed up by the San
Francisco hitters in this series. Anyway, this weekend, the Rockies, who are not
a great team when playing away from Denver, come to Petco. Don't be surprised if
the Padres can take the series from a team that finished last in the division in
2005.
