Thanks Gary!
It looks like Glanville's letter implies that the 2001 Gold Glove won by Jim
Edmonds might be the one he's unhappy about. Glanville was .991 that year with
425 chances, most of his career. Personally, I love outfield assists (being a
Manny Ramirez fan) and Glanville's best years there were 98 and 99.
Also IMHO, 1998 was really his best defensive year with only 2 errors, a .995
average and 14 assists. Really a stellar year for him, and as reported at
http://www.baseball-reference.com/awards/gold_glove_nl.shtml Jones, Walker and
Bonds won that year.
If indeed its 2001 he's after here, he does have a case. Edmonds had a very
good year, with a .982 average and quite a few less chances, with 12 assists. I
also like to look at double plays from outfielders, which are rare. That year I
believe Glanville won 3-1.
I've never thought that a gold glove should gaurantee a "1" rating, and although
I'm less familiar with Abreu (being an AL fan) I'm guessing the rating he
received is what he deserved. Sounds like an improvement for strato, after all.
