I ran the large loop yesterday afternoon to check the conditions. They
were still not letting vehicles into the park at all so I had to park on
West Fork at the bottom of Gummy Bear and make my way to the oval to
begin recording on my GPS.
I tracked the course and slowed or stopped at significant blow-downs.
In addition to 26 large trees obstructing the trail, the entire course
is littered with branches and twigs. Mt. Airy Forest is in need of a
very large rake.
I uploaded the GPS .log file as well as a Google Earth .kmz file. In
the GE file I have located blow-downs that I determined
from a significant drop in speed and/or cluster of points. The worst
section is just before you reach the double bridges. The trees with
all of the initials carved into the trunk didn't fare well. It will
take a while to clear all of this up.
I did not check the small loop but I would assume it to be as bad as
the large.
