There has been a lot of talk about the use of self-talk as a method for creating
successful habits. The idea is to reprogram your subconscious mind to reach your
goals. Many people in the sales field have used self talk successfully to take
positive action on the tasks they previously had an aversion to doing.
For example if you are very nervous on the telephone, you will avoid cold
calling by phone. You'll schedule a root canal before you sit down and make a
dozen calls. By using positive self talk, you give your subconscious mind a firm
commands over and over again that within a short period of time begins to take
root. You soon find yourself effortlessly doing things that once gave you
trouble initiating.
Self talk is something we do all the time. We just are not fully aware of it.
When you get on an old elevator and it's creaking and groaning, you tell
yourself that everything is fine that it's got safety features built in to all
elevators. You talk yourself down from your fears. Those are the obvious
situations which you might be aware. But do you know that you also use self talk
when you least expect it?
How many times have you skipped on a workout session and sat around the house
doing busy work? How about that session in which you got frustrated and called
it a day after your treadmill session? What about the cake you said you weren't
going to eat? All these events have one thing in common; you.
While you were thinking about working out, your body was following the
subconscious suggestions of your other desires. You were shut out of the loop!
The problem of discipline is not simply one of attitude; it is also a matter of
what your brain is doing at the moment you make a decision.
Try visualizing your workout ahead of schedule and vividly picture each move as
being perfect. Picture the correct amount of weight on the bar and performing
each rep with proper form. This will instill in your mind the proper way to do
things. Now tell yourself that you are executing each routine now in perfect
form.
Use a simple sentence with a positive outcome and place the timeline in the
present. You are doing the exercise with perfect form and your muscles are
contracting to its maximum level. Feel the routine in your mind as if it was
really happening. You'll soon discover that you become more interested in
starting your workouts after following this technique for a few days.
