A new SRKUSA Ueshiro Dojo opened at high noon today, September
3rd 2006, at the Suntree YMCA in Melbourne, Florida,
with Sensei David Tamir as its Shihan. Hanshi Robert Scaglione described
this event as “historic” and that we will look back 100 years from
now and remember it, as we keep on training in the art brought to us by Grand
Master Ansei Ueshiro almost 45 years ago. Members of our two neighboring
dojo[s], Ueshiro Cocoa YMCA Dojo and Cocoa Beach Dojo, helped launch the new
Suntree YMCA Dojo into the history books with joy and vigor. 50 deshi
showed up, filling the deck for the opening workout (about half from our
neighboring dojo[s] and half newcomers). Hanshi led everyone through our
traditional workout, introducing all the new potential deshi to our first
kata. Five workouts will be offered weekly at this new location.
Hanshi will be teaching Tuesday mornings at 6:00 AM. Sensei
Marchetti will be teaching Wednesday evenings at 8:30 PM. Sensei Tezel
will be teaching Thursday mornings at 6:00 AM. And Sensei Tamir will be
teaching Sundays at noon and Mondays at 8:30 PM. All our welcome.
Sensei Ron Marchetti, Pat Marchetti (Ik-Kyu), Kris Denny
(Ik-Kyu), and Amber Robertson (San-Kyu) from the Cocoa Dojo helped Sensei Tamir
in the setup of the new dojo’s Shinden wall (see photos below).
Many thanks to all who helped and showed up for our first workout.
A special domo arigato gozaimasu to Hanshi Scaglione for his leadership, commitment,
support, guidance, instructions, teachings, and also for providing historic
photographs for the dojo and the poster of SRKUSA’s mission statement of
propagating our art.

Attached, please find the schedule for weekly classes
offered at SRKUSA’s three Florida Space Coast Dojo locations: including
Cocoa Beach Dojo, Cocoa YMCA Dojo, and starting this coming Sunday at the new
Suntree YMCA Dojo. Combined, we are now offering 11 regularly scheduled
classes every week.
This is also a reminder that we will have our dojo opening workout
for the new Suntree YMCA dojo this coming Sunday at 12:00 PM Noon. You
are all invited.
The new Suntree YMCA Dojo is located at:

Please visit and train with us soon. Joy and Vigor!
This past Saturday August 19th, the Florida Cocoa
YMCA Ueshiro Dojo tested approximately 20 up and coming deshi including adults,
teenagers, and children. Testing results include 1 new Ik-Kyu, 3 new Ni-Kyu,
3 new San-Kyu, 5 new Yon-Kyu, and several new Go-Kyu and Ro-Kyu. The
quality of the deshi testing was very high. We prepared our deshi over
the past several weeks to emphasize full speed and knock-down power; and so
they did. A special highlight was the body testing of Kris Denny, who
tested for Ik-Kyu. Kris withstood four Sensei at once with Joy and Vigor!.
Co-Shihan Sensei Oscarson and Sensei Tamir led the testing
with Sensei Marchetti and Shodan Carla Eddy. Domo Arigato to Sensei
Chaskelson, Shihan of the Cocoa Beach Dojo, who visited the Cocoa YMCA dojo to assist
with the testing. Arigato to Shodan Carla Eddy for arranging a
refreshments table following the 3 hour long testing. Arigato to all the
deshi who did not test, but showed up to support their fellow deshi who were
testing.
Big congratulations to all who tested. We look forward
to continuing the training with you on the deck tomorrow and perhaps teaching
you a new kata!
The FloridaSpaceCoast (BrevardCounty) is soon to support a third new
Ueshiro SRKUSA dojo. The new dojo at the Suntree YMCA (in North Melbourne) will be opening on Sunday September 3rd.
The YMCA has approached SRKUSA to expand upon its success at
the Cocoa YMCA Ueshiro dojo, which was opened over two years ago under the
leadership of Hanshi Scaglione by Sensei Oscarson and Sensei Tamir. The
Cocoa YMCA has almost 4,000 members who fuel our incoming new deshi. The
Suntree YMCA has over 6,000 additional members to fuel more new deshi.
Hanshi Scaglione and Sensei Tamir have met with the
leadership of the Suntree YMCA and established the following schedule starting
this September. The scheduled times complement the training schedules at
the Cocoa YMCA and Cocoa Beach Dojo[s]. Two late evening classes and two early
morning classes are being introduced for working adults, and a noon Sunday
class will accommodate younger deshi as well.

AM To: 'hanshi-srkusa@...' Subject: Thought of the week
Hanshi,
The following is my proposed thought of the week for your
review:
Our kata[s] are designed to deal with multiple opponents
attacking us from different directions. The karateka responds by handling each
opponent. We therefore move in certain directions or vectors, usually one
per opponent. Each vector involves a series or combination of blocks and
strikes in response to each of these attacking opponents. The karateka
must knockout (disable) the attacker by the end of the vector. Then the
karateka changes to another vector to deal with another opponent. It may
also be possible that an opponent changes his attacking vector midstream,
requiring the karateka to adjust his response vector. However, it is
necessary for the karateka to finish his opponent on each vector as soon as
possible with the most efficient combination of blocks and strikes (provided to
us in kata), so that the next attacking opponent can be dealt with swiftly and
disabled, and the next, and the next … until there are no more opponents
attacking and the fight is over.
Remember that kata is not a game. It is a most serious
battle for life and death. The purpose of kata is not sport.
It’s not for scoring points. It’s for teaching and training
the karateka to knockout and disable each attacking opponent. As you
practice your kata, finish each vector within your kata with this determination
in mind – knockout your opponent by the end of each vector.
Visualize your kata in this manner to make it more meaningful as a training
tool. To help understand this, try once in a while to count once per
vector. In other words, for every count you switch opponents, which means
you switch direction (vectors) and carry through the combination of blocks and
attacks designed for that vector till the end of that vector. Then count
again. So in Fukyugata-Itch we have 8 vectors, or essentially 8 attacking
opponents. Try doing this kata with 8 corresponding counts. Note
that some vectors are much shorter than others. They can be as short as
one block followed by one knockout strike. Also note, that what may
appear as a block at the end of a vector is actually a knockout blow. For
example, note the apparent high block at the end of the 4th and 5th
vectors of Fukyugata-Itch. These are actually meant as a combination high
block and elbow smash rising from a low stance with full body force upwards to
“knock-off” the opponent’s head. This also occurs at
the end of the last two vectors in Pinan-Shodan.

Conducts - Monday Evening - St. Bart's Church
Hanshi conducted the class this evening at the Ueshiro Midtown at
St. Bart's Church.
The following points were stressed:
1. Hold the pose for strength. When you are performing kata
and you have an arm extended in chest punch position, or any other position,
and the instructor begins to speak – use this time to work the arm. Work the
arm, shoulders, chest, legs and any other muscles while the instructor speaks.
Also focus on the exact target. This will strengthen the arm and make it easier
to hit the target when performing the technique during kata.
2. When performing kata within a group the most important thing to
do is to stay together in the group. If you have a problem about when to begin
the move, here is a technique which will help. While working with the group, be
the last to begin to move – but be the first to finish the move..
3. If you are performing kata within a group and you make a
mistake just fix it. Be confident of your kata. If someone else in the group
makes an error – do not copy the same error – continue to perform the kata in
the proper way.
4. Be aware of your surroundings during the kata. This is especially
important when there is a large class in a small room. When making big turns
use your peripheral vision like radar to “get a feeling” for the proximity of
the person next to you or even behind you. If there is any question about the
proximity of the person next to you execute the technique at half power. The
awareness that you practice on the deck is the exact same awareness you would
use when you walk down the street, ride a bike, or ride on the subway.
5. The second move in P1 has the head block arm dropping down to
break and the chest block arm becoming the punching arm. When the head block
arm drops during this technique - do not move the chest block arm out of the
its chest block position. The punch is delivered from the chest block position.
It travels only a very short distance. The power in the punch comes from the
head block arm’s elbow being driven backward after the break.
6. In Naihanchi the feet are constantly adjusting so the heels may
be placed in the correct “outward” position.
7. Toward the end of the class, before any “cool down” half speed
katas and any stretching, be sure to challenge the body to move the fastest and
hit the hardest. In the same way a marathon runner would run the last 200 yards
at maximum speed to win the event.

Conducts at St. Bart's in Manhattan
Hanshi conducted the Ueshiro Midtown Karate class this afternoon
at St. Bart’s Church.
We all thank Hanshi for his time and the great “attention to
detail” that gave all those present a wealth of knowledge. Some of the points
that Hanshi stressed were:
Do not look at the
floor during the class at any time. This is true for the warm-ups as well.
The exceptions in the warm-ups are the exercises in which the complete
range of motion of the body and head cause us to look toward the
deck. The only person on the deck who may look at the floor during
the class is the instructor who should observe the feet of the deshi so
corrections may be given.
Chamber soft and
then explode the technique. But, do not “hold the chamber” during blocking
– this takes timing. One of the exercises that the class did to emphasize
this was the following: in each blocking technique do not move the
hands at all until the foot steps first. Then, once the stepping foot is
completely planted with the toes gripping the deck, chamber the hands and
explode the technique, in one fluid motion. Once this is practiced enough,
the next step is to time the motion of the arms and hands so that the
hands are moving as the feet are moving. The timing should be practiced so
that arms and hands are in constant motion. This practice is best
accomplished when you are alone on the deck with the mirror in front of
you. All this is true for every blocking technique. Instructors, please
keep in mind that beginners may need to practice the “hold the chamber”
position in the very beginning of their training just so they know where
the “chamber” actually is. But, once they demonstrate that they know where
the “chamber” is, have them work on the arms being in “constant motion.”
In the basic
technique of “step and slide” be sure that the heals make contact
first, not the balls of the feet.
In basic walking
across the deck keep the feet as close to the deck as possible. If it is a
choice of actually sliding the rear foot across the deck to the next
position – or – picking the rear foot high off the deck to move it forward
– choose slide the foot.
During the basics
there is a tendency for a great deal of noise to be generated by the feet
while moving from one spot to the next. To avoid this “stomping” keep the
feet close to the deck while moving so there is no pounding as the foot
stomps on the deck as it reaches its next position. This is especially
true for down block stance and chasing punch stance where the back foot
has a tendency to raise significantly off the floor as we travel.
Do not pre – turn
the forward foot as you travel. There is a tendency for the forward foot
to turn first before the back foot begins moving toward the opponent.
For example in the technique of walking reverse punch – keep the
forward foot planted in it place – move the rear foot forward
and grip the deck with the toes – then turn the back foot and
punch.

Downtown Karate Dojo TOTW: Zenkutsu-dachi VS. Neko-ashi-dachi
TOTW:
Zenkutsu-dachi VS.
Neko-ashi-dachi
Zenkutsu-dachi:
From the ready stance, the practitioner
steps forward with either the left or the right leg. Make sure the front leg is
bent far enough so that the front knee is over the toes. The practitioner's
back leg should be straight with the rear knee locked out. The practitioner
distributes 70% of their weight to the front foot and 30%of their weight to the
back foot. The front foot should always be pointing in the direction of the
target and the rear foot pointing out in a 45 degree angle.
Neko-ashi-dachi:
From the natural walking stance
(shizentai-dachi), the practitioner has either the left leg or right leg
forward. The practioner then drops straight down so that 90% of their weight is
placed on the rear foot and 10% of their weight on the front foot. Most of the
practitioner's weight is then focused on the rear of the rear foot. Both legs
are bent (Imagine sitting on a chair), the rear foot is flat on the ground and
the front slightly touching at the toes (heels up). The front foot should
always be pointing in the direction of the target and the rear foot pointing
out in a 45 degree angle.
Both these stances vary in how they look
and how they distribute their weight. But that is not all. When performing the
zenkutsu-dachi stance, the practitioner sees with the eyes first, then
"gets low" and sneaks into the stance, finds their foundation, then
performs the technique. For example, performing Gedan Uke in the first move of
Fukyugata 1.
When performing the Neko-ashi-dachi
stance, the practitioner sees with the eyes first, "stays high", then
drops into the stance, finds their foundation, then performs the
technique. For example, performing Chudan soto shuto-uke.
Do a few katas that incorporate these
stances. Then ask yourself: "Do I "STAY HIGH?" or "Do I GET
LOW FIRST?" before I perform the technique in those stances. The
katas have the answers!

blackbelts, brown belts and determined green belts for attending. Also,
a congratulations to Scott Modrzynski who attended as our first new
white belt recruit for the Dojo at St. Barts.
During the course of this week we will be formalizing a schedule of
instructors and assistant instructors to offer consistent, high-level
training for beginners and advanced students alike. Until the schedule
is formalized, please continue to train at the regularly scheduled
times. The Friday class, conducted by Sensei Garcia, will be
permanently switched to 5:30 - 6:30 (instead of 6:00 - 7:00). Also, Mr.
Neff will begin offering two Saturday classes as of this weekend, May
27th: 10:45 - 11:45 and 12:00 - 1:00pm. Starting June 1, 2006 we will
be offering monthly memberships for $75.

"Modify
Techniques When Necessary"
Occasionally, an injury requires an
alternative technique. For example, if a student is training with a
splint around a broken finger, it makes sense to use an elbow strike instead of
delivering a punch with the injured finger pointed at the opponent.
Particularly when training kata with a "real situation" mindset, it
is appropriate to explore ways to work around injuries. For example,
if an arm has a dislocated shoulder, try a head block using the other arm, or
if a big toe is broken, try kicking with different surfaces of the
foot.

There will be a karate class held at 6:30 am (no, that is not a typo), Friday, May 5 at 4th Street South on the beach. Come enjoy the dawning of a new day karate-style!
Hi Kurt, I wish I could help, I would have loved it. I'm Miami during the week
and home (on the Island) only on weekends.
I have a favor to ask that you might be able to help me with. There is this
website called treasure hunt. com that is run by the state that contains
information about unclaimed sums of money. I went and did some searches and
found my father's name. Now he is deceased and we have closed the estate. The
fund I found for my father consist of un exchanged stock in Boeing. I tried to
get help from Boeing directly but they were no help and I don't know where to
look for the answers to these questions.
If we claim these funds, do we have to reopen the estate, redue his personal
taxes and ours based on the year he pasted away and we inherited the estate
funds?
If it is unexchanged stock, if we simply transfer the shares into our name (and
don't cash them out) are they considered income?
Finally, my oldest brother is now deceased also without a will, what happens to
his part of these funds?
Any assistant on whom I should ask or where I could look myself would be greatly
appreciated.
Finally, I have a friend who has a special little girl who wants to begin taking
karate classes. I say special because she has a difficult time with her
attention span. She is and has been epileptic her whole life. Between the
seizures and the medication she has had a very difficult life. I would like to
get her into karate because of all the way it would help her (the concentration,
discipline, self confidence, just every thing). Her parents will always be
there at every class session so you will not have to be afraid of what to do if
something happens. I would really appreciate it if you would allow her to
attend one of you class sessions to allow both you and she decides if this is a
doable situation.
When are you classes during the weeks? I will be home the week of Memorial day
and plan to attend as many of the Cocoa Beach and Cocoa classes as I can so I'll
be able to help during that week. Let me know your thoughts about the idea of
Amanda taking classes and I'll get with her parents about what they will need to
do.
In advance, I appreciate any assistance you could provide for any of the above
and look forward to hearing back from you, Carla.

I have seven 6th graders signed up and could use some help from any deshi who may be available during one or both of these time frames. Please respond to this email or call me directly at 321.536.6516 for additional information.

Technique Of The Week
Utilizing Both Arms/Hands
When executing a blocking, striking, or punching technique, maximum
velocity and power cannot be realized without the complimentary
counter movement of both arms & hands. A common mistake with new and
intermediate deshi is to focus on the striking/blocking arm while the
opposite arm weakly counters. This is analogous to ripping a piece of
paper using one arm to hold and the other arm to rip. Ripping the
paper simultaneously with both arms is the more efficient technique.
When performing class punching and blocking drills in jigotai-daichi,
focus on accelerating both arms for every technique. When executing
the chest punch, imagine punching an attacker in front to the solar
plexus while simultaneously elbow striking an attacker in the rear to
the ribs. Adding the elbow strike give urgency to the counter-movement
and also provides more power to the chest punch. The added
acceleration for the elbow strike also results in a fully contracted
chambered hand that is ready to launch the next technique.
When practicing chest blocking techniques, extend/wind-up both arms
with equal tension when covering- then explode into a simultaneous
front block and rear elbow strike. Imagine "ripping" your opponent in
two from the covering position- using both arms/hands equally.

Subject: [USRKUSA - Deshi] Sincere Condolences-Sensei Dan Nichuals/&Family
With a heavy heart and deep regret, I must inform you that Sensei Dan
Nichuals passed away on 14 April 2006 at 4pmm. He was a most honorable man,
a devoted husband, a wonderful father and a skilled sensei/karateka, well
respected by his students and by all who had the pleasure of knowing him.
Dan was not one to back down from a challenge/responsibility and never gave
up his battle against pancreatic cancer. This past Sunday 09 April 2006, he
was wearing his gi, I had the honor of training with him in his dojo at
Pelham Manor, NY, a memory of him I will always remember. Dan will be missed
by all of us of UeshiroSRKUSA.
We have lost one of our longstanding and most valuable members, a Sensei who
trained hard and, by virtue of his upstanding conduct and merit throughout
25 years in karate, played an integral part in setting the exceptional
standards of our organization today.
Sensei Dan Nichuals leaves behind his wife Barbara and their two sons,
Connor 9years old and Matt 8years old. Please allow the family the privacy
to grieve at this time. I will post further information regarding the
funeral as soon as possible.
May God Bless Dan Nichuals and his family.
With sadness and great respect,
Hanshi Robert Scaglinoe.

There will be a karate class on the beach at 8:00 am, Friday, April 14. We will meet on the beach at Lori Wilson Park. Lori Wilson park is located next to the Holiday Inn in Cocoa Beach.

Today the CocoaBeachUeshiroShorin-RyuKarateSchool conducted a karate
and self defense training class for a Cocoa Beach Girl Scouts group. Twenty
five girl scouts belonging to the Freedom Seven Unit attended the class along
with their scout leaders and showed much spirit in learning about focus and
respect as well as the basics of karate training (punching, kicking , blocking)
and a basic self defense. Several CocaBeach karate students
showed up to assist in the training. The girls were divided into several
groups, each led by one or two regular karate students. To round out the event,
local Cocoa Beach Karate students demonstrated kata, bunkai (kata application),
yakasoku kumite (prearranged fighting) and breaking (JD McCormack did his flying
side kick to break a board).
The following karate students showed up to assist:
Black Belts: Sensei Des Chaskelson, Sensei Kurt Tezel, Sempai
Trevor Tezel
Brown Belts: Sheila Gagne, JD McCormack
Green Belts: Sarah Parker, Wade Parker, Alexis Appelgate
(Cocoa YMCA)
Yellow Belts: Joshua Adams; Nick French, Alex Appelgate (Cocoa
YMCA)

This Monday (April 10th) at 3.45pm to 4.45pm,
Cocoa Beach Karate will be conducting a karate and self defense class for about
20 local girl scouts at the CocoaBeachRecreationCenter.
I encourage everyone to attend and show support and help out
with this class – especially the children. Parents are encouraged to have
the children show up and help out.
Contact me with if you can make it and/or if you have any
questions.

Onegai-shimasu Hanshi, Kyoshi, Sensei, Sempai and Fellow Deshi,
In most of our moves, only one foot steps to a new position. The other foot
generally pivots to a new angle but rarely moves to a new spot. This way of
stepping yields stronger foundation in transition because we usually have
one foot solidly on the ground. In addition, this footwork is simple (not
"fancy") and, thus, in keeping with Shorin-Ryu's general emphasis on natural
movement. There are exceptions, but they are rare.
Keep stepping forward.
Domo arigato gozaimasu to all.
