Subject: [USRKUSA - Deshi]TFTW (week of Nov 22) "Shifting"
Onegai-shimasu Ueshiro SRKUSA,
We should study and practice Master Nagamine's words on "Shifting" as applied to Kumite on page 246 in his book "The Essence of Okinawan Karate-Do". Our kata[s] include various shifting moves. Yakusoku Kumite clearly demonstrates the effectiveness of various shifting moves. Let's try to incorporate shifting in one step sparring exercises as well, as described by Kyoshi Baker's recent e-mail posted on October 11th.
Happy Thanksgiving with joy and vigor as we continue training.

Deshi,
Here’s a quick note to outline the schedule for our rank promotions.
Master Ueshiro ran our full Belt Promotions every February and August; our White Belt Promotions (“Tip Tests”) every February, April, June, August, October, and December; and held our annual Black Belt Workout and Dinner on the first Sunday in December.
And we of course are proud to carry on this tradition.
In addition, nearby Dojo try to schedule their Promotions on different dates within the designated month to encourage participation among all local, fellow Dojo. Therefore, to the degree possible, try to attend the Promotions at the other Dojo to support your fellow Deshi.
Next, if you wish to test but are unable to do so at your home Dojo, then you may test at another Dojo after first receiving the approval of both your own Shihan and the Shihan of the other Dojo. (Don’t forget to bring your Ueshiro Shorin-Ryu Karate USA membership card.)
This way, we’re all coordinated and connected throughout our system and we peak together for our various events.
As always, if you have any questions, please contact your Shihan.

Subject: [USRKUSA - Deshi]Technique of the Week - 11/15/09 Simultaneously attacking and defending with both hands
Onegai-shimasu Hanshi, Kyoshi, Sensei, Sempai and Fellow Deshi,
Master Motobus karate-do inspired Master Nagamine to develop the yakusoku kumite that we practice. We can see in our yakusoku kumiteprinciples derived by Master Nagamine from his study with Master Motobu. One of these principles isthat One should strive to use both hands simultaneously in a defensive and offensive manner. One example of this principle in action in the yakusoku kumite is the defenders second move in yakusoku sho, which combines a palm heel strike with a low block.Another example is the defenders final move in yakusoku san, which combines a low block with a high punch.
Domo arigato gozaimasu to all,
Emiliano Mazlen

As Kyoshi Mackay wrote in his e-mail earlier this week, Hanshi gave the deshi at the Ueshiro Midtown Karate a great deal of "sugar" during his visit. Here are some of Hanshi's observations:
1. Keep the wrists straight.Do not let them bend whether you are performing warm-ups, a punch, a block or open hand ( Karate chop ) technique. The only exception occurswhen doing some advanced Kata like Rohai.
2. Step first before executing the technique. This goes for every move in every technique. Both feet must be in place before the technique is delivered. There is no way to effectively deliver a technique with one foot in the air. This is an especially common mistake with open handed blocks using cat stance.
3. When making turns do not pre-turn turn the head and look over the shoulder before making the turn. Be certain to step first, begin chambering the hands and then in one fluid motion execute the technique. Be certain that the feet and head lock in place before landing the technique.
Here are rare photos of Master Nagamine demonstrating this step first principle when turning in Kata Wankan:
4. Keep the heels as close to the floor as possible. The rear heel especially must stay close to the deck. This error is most commonly seen with the rear heel rising when doing chasing punch and step-and-slide exercises.
5. One of the exercises done during the warm-ups is pointing the arm to the ceiling and bending to the side. When bending over to the side be certain that the face remains pointed directly forward. Common error when bending side to side is to turn the face toward the floor. Be certain to keep this "full face" forward posture. Once the basic warm-ups are completed the instructor will commonly follow by having the class do a full squat. And,from this low squat go directly into forward leaning stance turning left and right to work the legs. When making these turns be certain the forward foot is on a slight angle and not facing directly at the side wall. This slight angle in the foot permits the body to be balanced in the exact position it is in when doing the low blocks in Kata. If the foot is incorrectly pointed directly at the side wall the body will be in a straight line and impossible to balance
6. If you are a lower rank and not certain about performing a technique just look at the advanced deshi in front of you and copy what they are doing.
7. The chest punch is delivered with the arm at a very slight downward angle - the arm is almost parallel to the deck. The downward angle is just enough to cause a drop of oil placed at the shoulder to roll slowly down the arm to the fist.
8. The target for a face punch is the tip of the opponent's nose. This requires pin-point accuracy when delivering the punch.
Subject: [USRKUSA - Deshi]Special Veteran's Day workout conducted by Hanshi
On Wednesday, November 11, Hanshi Robert Scaglione conducted an advanced seminar at the St. Barts Athletic Center for approximately 35 students of all ranks. Hanshi's insights and insistence that we strive to do better were overpowering. Receiving a correction from Hanshi has the impact of hearing it for the first time. The "light bulb" goes from a dim glow to many megawatts.
Domo arigato gozaimasu, Hanshi, for sharing Veteran's Day with those of us in the New York area, and for your countless years of service to your Country, this City and the many followers of Ueshiro Shorin-Ryu USA.
Subject: Re: [USRKUSA - Deshi]Visit by Tamir Sensei to Hong Kong
Onegai-shimasu Lai Sensei and Wong Sensei and Sempai Michalski,
It was the highlight of my business trip to visit and train with you and your deshi in your beautiful park and pavilion (also it was a great way to neutralize the jet lag). I sincerely thank you for making the time on a couple days short notice and during a non-scheduled workout time. Your hospitality, training, campai, dinner, and brotherhood were exemplary.
The Karate-Do of Master Ueshiro being passed onto us by Hanshi Scaglione runs very STRONG in your veins. Hanshi Scaglione recruiting Sensei Kaplan as a new deshi in New York City many years ago, led some years later to Sensei Kaplan's efforts at the University in Hawaii where he recruited you as new deshi, led to your continuing efforts now years later as exemplary Shihan and Sensei producing strong Black Belts like Sempai Michalski in Hong Kong ... is all a testament to our mission: To propagate the art of Shorin-Ryu Karate USA, its kata and techniques, as handed down by our founder Grand Master Ansei Ueshiro. To preserve and protect the history, traditions, methods and integrity of Shorin-Ryu Karate USA. To develop students to their maximum potential in body, mind and spirit; through courtesy, propriety, self-discipline and the ecstasy of hard work fostered by our dojo - the sacred training halls - of Shorin-Ryu Karate USA.
To help encourage and excite our members worldwide to visit you in Hong Kong, I offer the following attached sample photos of the special training location where you hosted me so well. I realize that you have several other training locations around Hong Kong and I hope to visit you again to see and experience them all. (I also hope to train next time in Hong Kong with your training partner Shihan Kleusch, who understandably had a very important father-son commitment during my short notice visit.) I will post these and other photos in larger format on my web site under a special photos web page dedicated to your dojo[s] in Hong Kong to remind us to visit and train with you on your very special side of the world.
What you continue to do so many miles away from many of us, where the roots of Karate started, energizes all of us as we think and speak of you to our deshi. I salute you for staying "OPEN" and opening new places for our karate "business" -- our mission as handed down to us from our founder Master Ueshiro through Hanshi Scaglione.
Ueshiro Hong Kong Karate was very fortunate to haveTamirSensei visit and train with us on November 3, 2009. Even the trip organization reflected karate spirit asTamirSensei was asked to travel toHong Kongon business and he immediately contacted us about the opportunity to train together despite having only a few hours to spare, domo arigato Sensei!
Training at one of our favorite outdoor locations,LaiChiKokPark, we started in the late afternoon and continued for over 3 hours. Even with short notice, both Lai Sensei and Wong Sensei were able to attend in addition to myself and two of our youngerdeshi, Sempai Marco Ng and Sempai Elvis Lo. TamirSensei provided us with plenty of sugar directly fromHanshias we went through warm-ups,kihonandkatabefore finishing off withTamirSensei demonstrating tuifakihonandkata.
Of course, all of the training helped to build our appetites and we enjoyed a delicious Chinese dinner and plenty of karate stories afterwards during our compai.
We continue to extend an open invitation to all deshi to visit us for both training and exploring the many contrasting elements ofHong Kong! During just the few hours that Tamir Sensei was training with us in the park, there was a group of older folks practicing tai chi in one area near us and younger folks practicing cheerleading routines in another area while we focused on our karate.
Domo arigato to Tamir Sensei for visiting and for Sensei and Sempai who were able to train on short notice!
Domo arigato to Master Ueshiro, Hanshi, Kyoshi, Sensei, Sempai and all deshi for maintaining the spirit and tradition of Shorin-Ryu karate!
