Hanshi conducted this evening's class the
Ueshiro Midtown Karate temporary location at St. Bart’s Church at
A big thank you to Emiliano Mazlen and
new Shodan Amy Mager for making the long journey to the Big Apple.
Hanshi stressed the following;
1. Normal walking stance. Be certain it
is the correct length and not too wide. The length would be very close to the
length of the stance as you walk normally. Common error doing kata is to step
wide and not long enough.
2. While doing the “big” step and slide technique during the warm up exercises
make certain the back foot does not finish up too close to the forward foot.
The distance between the two feet would be that as described above. Also, do
not project with the head - project with the belly.
3. Strikes to the side - In another basic exercise we are in jigotai,
hands are chambered at the solar plexus and back fist strikes are thrown to the
left and the right. Here the error is for the body to shift to the side where
the strike is being delivered. That is wrong. Keep the body centered at all
times. You may drop directly down on the hit but do not shift the body or reach
with the shoulder.
4. In the opening move of all the Pinan kata only the right foot moves off the
spot. The left foot pivots but it does not leave the spot. This is much the
same for F2 opening move. Common error in F2 is the right foot moves so far
forward in the opening move that the left foot is dragged off its spot in order
to maintain proper stance.
5. During prearranged fighting the attacker must attempt to take over the space
of the defender. In prearranged #1, the opening move for the attacker should
begin by stepping between the legs of the defender. In the second move the
attacker must step in a straight line taking over the defenders
"space" and forcing the defender to get to the side. Common error
here is the attacker steps at a slight angle and not directly at the defender.
6. For those doing Ananku - in the opening move the hands are chambered
above the head, much like the 5th move of Wankan.
