I am really getting bad at sending our holiday cards and so I'm just
going to forward our family newsletter to everyone on this list.

From: Iain Subject: Squaw Valley
Howdy. I'm from Edmonton, Alberta, Canada. I feel compelled
to
write a few
lines to you pertaining to this Squaw Valley memories site. I
can't seem to
resist the urge or stop myself from writing - so I'm going to
get
it out of
my system. I don't have any pictures or fun stuff like that
to
add, and my
reasons for being in Squaw Valley were a lot different than
the
others, but
I've had this site as a "favorite" for about a year now and I
go
in and look
at the pictures and go misty every once in a while. All the
years
have gone
by and there hasn't been anything like this - I guess the
internet
opened
the opportunity to have it, so I actually have the internet to
thank as a
start I guess eh? But I thank you for coming up with this
site
and the
pictures etc. I just wanted to connect with
you, to send
you a few lines so you know the bit of happiness I got/get
when I
fell upon
your idea - your site. You probably had no idea you could
have an
effect
like this on somebody by having this site. I mean, everybody
seems to enjoy
the warm fuzziness of the memories like I do, but there's also
been - the
only way I can put it is, kind of a healing feeling of some
kind
for me.
In the fall of 1964, our family made the big trip with an old
Rambler and a
15 foot trailer to Squaw Valley - our first of 5 annual trips
with
the last
one in 1968. I was 6 in '64 and hadn't ever heard of the
place.
At the
time, my dad had become involved with , what I now refer to
as a
cult, a so
called religious group headed by Herbert W Armstrong and his
son
Garner Ted
Armstrong. The reason we went to Squaw Valley was for the
annual
fall
festival that the cult had - it was nothing like Jonestown or
anything too
bizarre - they just really had a lot of fire and brimstone and
messing with
your head to control you - like brainwashing. They had it in
Squaw Valley
because there were a lot of us and we needed a pretty big
hall to
have the 8
daily meetings in - hence the Blythe Arena. Anyway - I didn't
want to get
carried with all the effects of that situation. I got away
from
it as an
adult and its over. I just had to give the reason why we
ended up
there in
the fall for 5 years.
So anyway, What I have now as a middle aged person, are
memories
of that
area. That's what stuck in my head - that Squaw Valley was a
very
special
place on this planet - and it seems to have stuck in others
heads
too,
judging by you and the other contributors to your site. For
whatever
reason, my family was not a family that took a lot of
pictures, so
I have
one surviving black and white picture along the road by Lake
Tahoe. It's a
picture that nobody would recognize as that area, but I
remember
it and know
it to be there. But when I came onto your site here, and saw
the
pictures,
it literally sent me reeling back in memories. At
the "meetings"
there were
lots of other kids like me, and in the campground at night we
would all play
together - campfires and hide-and-seek - very fond memories .
Other people
rented accomodations somewhere along Lake Tahoe , so the
mentions
of the
bunk beds etc remind me of the fun in those places too.
In 1990, my wife and I took our truck/camper and drove out the
bottom of
Alberta, down to Salt Lake City, then west out across the salt
flats and on
Wendover to Reno and Lake Tahoe. As we neared the town on
Lake
Tahoe, I
pulled over, it was a bright sunny day, I opened the door of
the
truck and
that smell hit me and sent me in a time warp - the sweet air,
the
smell of
those pines in the breeze - it's unbelievable. We drove to
the
Safeway in
the town and got some buns and cold cuts to make lunch - I
looked
around
there and remembered I bought a plastic model car in that
Safeway
in like
1968 - I still have that Pontiac model. This was the first
time I
was there
in 21 years. We went to the Blythe arena site - it was pretty
much gone -
broken down. There was a Smokey-the-Bear sort of
robot/figure in
a glass
case near the road where you would drive into the Blythe Arena
area - you
would put a dime in and he would say something like "only you
can
prevent
forest fires". He was gone.
So for some reason, the very mention of Squaw Valley sends a
wave
of
different emotions over me. I have a couple of physical
momentos,
some old
post cards kind of thing. but anyway, my bottomline here is
to
say thankyou
for having this site and the pictures. It's nice to come here
once in a
while and look at those familiar visions from my memory and
think
about
being a kid.
Regards - Iain
Today I took my kids skating at the Colorado Springs World Arena and
there was a male skater there that looked about my age, so I asked
his wife what his name was and it was Billy Tilghman!
Billy took from Skippy Baxter during the Squaw summers and had a cute
little blond sister named Lila.
It was neat to run into a Squaw alum right in my hometown! He lives
here in Colorado Springs!

Hello,
My name is Suzanne(Suzy) Sexton. I am the niece of Patty Staunton. I so
enjoyed reading about your days at Squaw Valley! Both Patty and I live in Reno
now. I am sorry to say that she has become very ill recently and may not live
much longer. She so enjoyed her days skating at Squaw just as my family loves
to skate and ski there now. Her whole life has been about her love of skating.
I just found your website and decided to write. I saved the website address and
will update you as to her condition.
Sincerely, S. Sexton

Hi,
I was poking around the yahoo groups and saw your squaw valley photos. I
really liked skating in that rink. I spent part of a summer there, but I
think it was a year or two after after the 60 Olympics - Hisashi Kuchiki
skated there that summer - he competed in the Olympics for Japan and stayed
in the US after the games. I also took from Skippy Baxter - at his rink in
Walnut Creek and skated with Charlie Tickner there. Anyway, my niece is
married to Mark Turner, Mary Jo's brother. I noticed that someone was
trying to get in touch with her. I can forward your email to her and maybe
she will get in touch.

Dear Jo Ann, I came across your site my accident while looking
for photos of the SV area. I am the current owner of the house in SV
that Jimmy and Barbara Wagner Grogan owned in 1959 into the 60's. I
had heard from my realtor that the home was once owned by figure
skaters. I did a search on the web and found out details of his
skating career. I am currently remodeling the house (1344 Lanny
Lane) and hope to turn it in to a Bed and Breakfast guest home of
sorts. I would like to include some historical information that
might be of interest to the guests. Information on the Grogan family
would be so wonderful. From your site I have an email for the son
and his wife in Georgia which I will use to try contacting them. I
am especially interested in pictures of the Grogans. I think you may
have included a pictue of Jimmy and his son J.D. on your website. It
would be great to have a copy of that picture if that is them.
Please contact me at my email address of cindyul@... or my P.O.

Hi Joann, I do remember you and quite a few of the
people mentioned on the site. My time in Squaw Valley
were some of the happiest times of my life. I think
for me it was training with Jimmy that really made me
love the sport. I still miss him and heard about his
passing in a newspaper clipping while living in Cairo,
Egypt. I try to get back to Squaw when I can just to
keep the memories alive. It broke my heart the first
time I went back and discovered the rink had been torn
down. What a terrible waste of a beautiful building.
Skating while looking out at the mountains was such a
thrill. I still hike the falls and up around the ski
lifts whenever I go back. I was one of the fortunate
ones to get to spend the entire year up there in the
house with the Craigs and Debbie Jones. I will always
feel so grateful to have had that experience. I do
remember a few of us getting into the storage rooms
under the bleachers and getting the American flag and
a couple of others that had been stored there since
the Olympics and some other memorabilia, glass mugs
and whatnot, still have them somewhere in storage.
Since getting out of competitive skating I joined
Holiday on Ice and Ice Follies for 6 years, then did a
tour with Barry Ashton's Las Vegas on Ice in Japan.
I've taught skating off and on since then, but am now
a gemologist. My husband is in the oil field industry
and and we have been living overseas for the last few
years. We were in Cairo, Egypt then Jakarta,
Indonesia, a brief posting in Stavanger, Norway and
now we are living in Aberdeen, Scotland.
I wish I could give you some information on some of
the others but unfortunately have lost track since I
move around so much.
it's great that you've done this site, my best to you
and all the others that read this.

WE'RE LOOKLING FORWARD TO SEEING YOU
Another wonderful skating summer is almost here. Squaw Valley will be
more beautiful than ever with the late snow-- thus late Spring. There
will be white capped mountains all summer and the falls and streams
will be exciting to exp1ore.
We found last year that including all the incidentals in the fifty
dollar a week fee worked very well. We furnish everything you need,
buy candy bars and take care of the movies, etc. We hope to have our
usual number of parties this year. We had 80 for an after show supper
party last year plus many many more smaller ones. We had some awfully
good times.
Your only extra expenses will be your public skating, lessons,
patches, and expensive parties the skating school may have like
hayrides, etc. We really prefer the girls not to have money as
it' s
a temptation for others -- we never lock the house — and if spent
on
goodies at the store that could promote a mouse family and we have
enough to feed without that.
The main purpose of the summer is to skate and progress, and
we've
had wonderful times achieving our goals. It's great to see the
improvement over the summer. Also, the number of tests our girls pass
is very rewarding. Everyone is expected to work and produce, but
together it's fun. Of course there are rules we all must follow
and
the important thing is plenty of sleep and good food. Skating in the
ice shows is valuable experience so come prepared with a record and a
number plus pretty outfit. You'll get your chance if you're
prepared!
You'll see from the patches we take we `re an early to bed
and. early
to rise household. However the 6:30 patch isn't as crowded, the
early
mornings are bright and beautiful, and it`s found to work the
best
this way. We'll have our big breakfast after the 6:30 patch and
then
anyone who wants to free skate at 8:45 can. The 10 o'clock patch.
Is
popular but we skate it and are there to take advantage of the
beginning of the public session for those who want to. It is usually
good ice and not crowded.
The afternoons are varied and there`s always plenty to do. We
`11 eat
an early dinner and those who want to can skate the 5:45 patch. Most
everyone likes the evening freestyle. However, you don't have to
sign
up in advance for the freestyle so everyone can do as she feels like
each day. After freestyle we have dessert — in nighties and off
to,
bed, usually by 8:30. A very full day!
.
Your mailing address is YOU, `General Delivery, OLYMPIC VALLEY,
Calif., 95730. Our phone is area code 916 583-5992.
We'd appreciate a $50.00 deposit if possible. Please fill in the

Hi Joanne-
Leslie Cronin ....I skated with Les in Ice Capades. We were both skated in
Concord, Ca. She's married to Gigi Percelly - he was a comedian in Follies and
Capades(Biddy and Baddy) and I believe they live in Knoxville, TN.
Jenny Gilman Sears lives here in the N. Calif Bay Area. Since I stopped coaching
I've lost touch with her. I think she has a couple of kids though.
Kelly Burge I remember seeing backstage with her parents at Ice Capades in
LA(1984). She was in a car accident which left her severely challenged. It was
sad. I had tried out to skate pairs with her in the summer of 1974.
Karen Grobba I worked with in Capades, then would run in to her at competitions
when I was coaching. She lives in So Cal some where.
Barbara Horton - I wish I knew. We were good friends when we skated. I loved her
unique style as well.
Lauren McDonald Sheehan lives in Oklahoma I believe. I'd run in to her as well
when I was coaching. She hit it big making dresses for all the top ladies in the
80's.
Kathy Rose lives here in the Bay Area as well. I just got her phone number from
a friend. We skated and coached together. Her mom passed away a while a go and
it was quite a blow to Kath as they were very close.
Mike Tokar I used to see at Sky Rink in NYC when I was in Capades. I believe he
lives in Los Angeles area now.
So many names on your list bring back so many memories!

I love your site. My friend Sandy Bigman turnen me on to it. I have wonderful
memories of Squaw - starting in in 1971 to 1977. I try to go up there once a
year to skate on top of the world...........I still get goose bumps when we turn
on to the road to Squaw.
I'm wondering if you know that Cathy Carter's father - Jerry - just passed away.
I don't have the details, but Sandy Bigman emailed me about it. It was very
sudden apparently. I haven't seen Cathy in years. I used to coach and my friend
Kathy Rose and I ran in to her at a competiton in Santa Rosa.
I'll send more specific memories soon. I used to compete in singles and pairs on
the Pacific Coast and I remember you and your brother quite well.
My best to you and thanks for creating such a special website.

Hello,
I was just cruising the internet and I found your website. I thought I would
update you on Tammy Gambill. The phone number for Riverside Icetown is wrong on
your site. (909)637-3070. www.icetown.com.
Tammy is now the coach of two National champions (Ricky Dornbush, Juvenile Boys
Junior Nationals, and Dennis Phan, Junior Men National Champion).
She is doing really well, and had her best coaching year to date this season
with four skaters qualifying for Nationals. Felecia Beck just came to Icetown
to train with Tammy.

Dear Jo Ann,I found your Squaw Valley Web page today while taking a break at
work, and what a mempry prompt it was for me. I also took lessons from Barbara
Wagner and Jimmy Grogan, and spent a couple of Weeks at Squaw Valley in 1966 (I
think) when I wal 11 years old. I remember staying in a dorm or something, it
felt very grown up to me. My name them was Susie Gogol, and I skated at the
Burlingame rink (the old El Camino Ice Skating Club, no longer there). I knew
lots of the people you mentioned, some even skated at Burlingame with me. I
quit skating when I went to college, but in recent years have gotten involved
again and am now a skating judge and am president of the Peninsula skating Club
too. I have lost touch with most of the people I knew then, but I do remember
Juli McKinstry (she was indeed awesome), Karen Cousineau (she is a judge now too
so I so see her periodically), Debbie Jones (blonde and perky), Lee Musik (I
used to skate pairs with him for fun sometimes), Susie Bennett (we went to
Centrals together one year at Squaw Valley, I think, and stayed with the
Burdens), Tammy Gambill ( she is a coach, I see her at competitions sometimes),
Ricky Inglesi, Barbara Ray (she skated at Burlingame too, won Junior Ladies at
Nationals one year). Sorry to say I don't remember your name though. I heard
that Don Jacoby has passed away, just for your info. Anyway, it was fun reading
about what people are doing now, and remembering back to that time and place.
If I have any photos I will send them along.Regards,Susan Karl

My God its been many years since I've talked to you. My life is very hectic.
I represent tax payer who get themselves into trouble with the IRS. I also
Latin dance with a partner. Do karate, ski, fish, and go out to different
clubs three times a week. I'm fifty years old, but hardly seem to be slowing
down. Maybe when I'm 60. Ha ha Anyway, I went to Squaw Valley in Sept. for a
month. Boy has that place changed.... I'm thinking about buying some property
in the valley.
I was married for 22 years and divorced four years ago. I date a lot of
different women, but no one special yet. Were are you living, do you have
kids? I have a twenty-nine year old daughter whom is great. I have great
relationships with my ex and daughter too. Life has been very good to me in
most respects. Had a lot of problems when I was younger, but that all behind
me. Hope things are going well for you.
Sincerely,
GaryForman

Think back to the summer of 1969.....
Jo Ann Schneider has a terrible bike accident on the way to the rink
in Squaw Valley while riding Caren Davis' bike. Mrs. McKinstry calms
all the girls as Jo Ann bleeds. Caren's bike is totalled.
Jo Ann never rides a bike again.
Jo Ann was convinced for thirty years that she could not ride a
bike. In 2000, she got over that fear. In 2002, she just bought a
really nice bike and loves to ride again!
Just wanted to share this with everyone! I just bought the coolest
bike! I am so happy to be riding once again!
