The form of Marco Di Vaio is yet more evidence of the depth of Italian football, according to Italy Coach Marcello Lippi.
Di Vaio, who will be 33 in July, scored a hat-trick for Bologna on Sunday and is Serie A's capocannoniere with 19 goals this season.
“He's doing very well,” Lippi told Italia 1 football show Controcampo. “It's not easy at 32. I am very happy for him.”
When asked if he would consider Di Vaio for La Nazionale, Lippi replied: “It's truly wonderful that there are so many players who are putting themselves forward, doing great things.
“There are even players with two passports putting themselves forward. Everyone from age 18 to 40, they all should dream about the Azzurri.
“After 2002 and 2004 it seemed people fell out of love with the Italy colours,” he said. “But at the end of the day, I cannot call
up 50 players.”
Lippi trained Di Vaio when he was at Juventus between 2002 and 2004 where he scored just 18 goals in 58 appearances.
“He did not fail at Juventus,” Lippi concluded. “He just didn't succeed in expressing his full potential as he has done ever since then. But with Juventus he played, scored good goals and won the Scudetto."
Di Vaio has been capped for Italy on 14 occasions, the last of which came five years ago under Giovanni Trapattoni.
Juventus striker Amauri has finally decided whether to play for Italy or Brazil after months of speculation.
The 28-year-old was recently given the all clear to apply for Italian citizenship after his wife Cynthia was confirmed as an Italian.
Once Amauri receives an Italian passport he will be eligible to play for Italy, having never been called up by Brazil, his home country.
“I have made my decision,” Amauri told La Gazzetta dello Sport. “I will let you know about my future soon.”
The former Palermo attacker, who has suffered something of a scoring drought since January, denied the whole affair had been a distraction.
“No, it's only coincidental,” he said. “Those were moments that every striker goes through. Anyway, it will take about six months to obtain the citizenship.”
Amauri's flip-flopping between
Italy and Brazil has angered some. Milan midfielder Gennaro Gattuso recently said he would not welcome Amauri in Azzurro.
“He has his own opinion,” Amauri explained. “Others hopefully have a different one. But it's clear that if I play for Italy it will not be for my career, but because of a feeling I have.
“I have been in Italy for 10 years, this country has given me everything and to wear the Italy colours would be a way to repay it.”
Amauri has enjoyed a magnificent debut season for Juventus, scoring 14 goals in 36 appearances for the Bianconeri in all competitions.
Italy Coach Marcello Lippi was present at Lazio's training session at Formello today.
Lazio have returned to form after a mid-season lull and it seems some of their Italian players have grabbed the attention if Azzurri boss Lippi.
The World Cup winning tactician was given a round of applause as he appeared at Formello.
He took notes as he watched the Biancocelesti players train and then he talked to President Claudio Lotito and team manager Igli Tare.
He may have been watching in-form wide man Pasquale Foggia, left-back Lorenzo Silvestri or striker Tommaso Rocchi, who scored in Tuesday evening's Coppa Italia win over Juventus.
Foggia has two Italy caps to his name, Rocchi has three, but De Silvestri has only featured at Under-21 level.
Italy and France have been given the go-ahead to experiment using an extra referee behind each goal, explains Pierluigi Collina.
The meeting of the International Football Association Board (IFAB) in Newcastle this weekend confirmed the new system would be used from the start of next season.
“These won’t be assistants, but actual referees,” noted Italian legend Collina, now the refereeing designator.
“It has already been experimented during some youth competitions with the two box judges there to officiate on what happens in the penalty area, which is something that requires a great deal of experience.
“Testing out an innovation like this represents a great opportunity for Italy.”
Serie A has already been the guinea pig for other technological advances, such as a camera on the inside of the crossbar to judge whether the ball has completely crossed the line.
“The Federation must decide on which division to begin experimenting this new system. [FIGC President Giancarlo] Abete has always said he is ready to continue the tests in a professional level.
“After all, referees like Rizzoli, De Marco and Saccani already took part in the experimentation so far and said they were satisfied with the results.”
The IFAB rejected proposals to allow a fourth substitute in extra time and an ‘orange’ card – a sin bin for a particularly nasty challenge.
Gattuso came out publicly to declare his opposition against the Brazil-born Juventus striker playing for La Nazionale when his passport comes through and let his feelings be known in no uncertain terms.
Altafini, who played for both Italy and Brazil, has now jumped in to defend Amauri. Indeed, the former striker believes the Juve man should choose to play for the Azzurri.
"Gattuso's opinion and what he said about Amauri and Brazil was not very nice," Altafini told Sky Sport Italia.
"Gattuso needs to shut his mouth as Lippi is the Italy coach and he chooses the players for the team, including Amauri."
Although Amauri will have to wait a little longer for Italian eligibilty, Altafini believes he is better off choosing Italy over Brazil.
"If I was Amauri I would choose Italy as Brazil have seven great strikers already," he added.
"Amauri needs to decide what he wants to do now and take a decision, even though he hasn't received the passport yet. At this point I would choose the Azzurri." Salvatore Landolina, Goal.com
You heard it here first…Goal.com are launching an ambitious campaign for Marcello Lippi to play Paolo Maldini against Brazil on February 10 in what would be a special international farewell before the Milan hero retires. We need your support to help make it happen…
Paolo Maldini will finally retire at the end of the current season and, unlike the past two years, this time there will be no going back. This raises the question – just how do you honour a player, who will probably go down in history as the greatest defender of all time?
It can’t be possible that a monument of the game, who has won seven Scudetti, five Champions Leagues, been capped more than any Milan, Serie A or Italy national team player, can just fade away into the horizon. This is someone who has been consistently world class for the best part of a
quarter-of-a-century, someone who is known for his fair play and humility on-and-off the pitch, loved, respected and cherished by all opponents and fans.
This is a player who defies the laws of physics, and sends shivers down your spine when you see him continue to compete with the best at the age of nearly 41.
To put it simply – Paolo Maldini is an incomparable legend, and it could be 100 years before we again see someone of his kind on the football field.
Maldini has not played for Italy since the 2002 World Cup second round clash against South Korea, with the defender announcing his retirement after the infamous Golden Goal defeat. He has since twice resisted calls to come back, first for Euro 2004, and then for the victorious 2006 World Cup campaign.
But how about Italy hands Maldini the international send-off he deserves during the prestigious friendly against Brazil at the Emirates Stadium in London on February
10?
With the Azzurri playing just two more matches before the Confederations Cup in June, both important World Cup qualifiers against Montenegro and Ireland, this would be the last chance for Maldini to don the famous blue jersey for one last time, and the last opportunity for the fans to celebrate and pay tribute to their hero.
And what a finer finale than a clash against the world’s most successful nation, the team who denied Maldini the World Cup in 1994, and who would field a number of the stopper’s Milan team-mates, including Kaka, Pato and Ronaldinho.
In April 2004, Italy showed its romantic side by offering another retiring legend, Roberto Baggio, a sentimental farewell in a friendly against Spain. The reception in Genoa to ‘The Divine Ponytail’ was overwhelming, and the ex-Juventus and Brescia star left the field in tears when he was substituted three minutes before the end.
Maldini deserves to be able to say
goodbye in a similar fashion, even if he is to only enter as a substitute late in the game and, for this reason, Goal.com, together with Goal.com Italia, are launching an ambitious campaign for Marcello Lippi to pick the Milan captain against Brazil.
We realise that this could be a long-shot, but he who dares, wins. With your help, we could make the impossible happen. With enough responses, this campaign/petition will be publicised throughout Italy and the World, and will also help enable us to get in contact with the two parties that matter most – Marcello Lippi and Paolo Maldini.
So ask yourself – do you want Paolo Maldini to be handed a farewell match against Brazil in a fortnight’s time? If you do, leave your real name, address and honest comment below, and we will try to make the dream come true…
Italy boss Marcello Lippi insists that the Scudetto race is still wide open, despite Inter's six-point lead.
The reigning champions seem to be in control again after beating rivals Juventus to consolidate their power.
But Azzurri tactician Lippi doesn't believe that the title race will be a stroll for the Nerazzurri.
With respect to everyone, I don't believe that the League title has been decided yet, Lippi said on Sky Sport Italia.
The championship will go down to the wire. I also think that Roma can continue picking up the wins and will achieve something positive.
In recent weeks there has been much debate over whether Serie A appeals to foreign audiences.
Forget about Inter-Juve, I think the great game was Fiorentina-Udinese, Lippi said.
It was a spectacular match and it could have finished 8-4 or 7-3. I think it
was the best game of the weekend and it had everything that makes calcio exciting.
I read your profile today, I thought I would drop you a line and hope to become

AC Milan wing-back Gianluca Zambrotta would prefer the super clash between Juventus and Inter to end in a draw this Saturday, so his side can bounce back into top place by beating Torino the following day...
There will be huge interest in the summit of Italian football thisweekend when Milan take on Torino and Internazionale host Juventus.
The Rossoneri could return to the top of Serie A as long as they win in Turin against the Granata and the Nerazzurri fail to beat the Old Lady.
This is all possible for Zambrotta who believes that his team are going through an excellent moment of form.
"We're doing well, going through a very good period," declared the former Juventus and Barcelona player. "Let's hope to continue like this, because this is the path which must accompany us until the end.
"We know that no game is easy, especially away from home against a tough team like Torino. However I hope that on Saturday evening it ends in a draw between Inter and Juventus.
"This way, a win for us on Sunday will allow us to reach the top spot, which is what we want."
Zambrotta anticipates a very hard-fought league
in Serie A this year, with many teams in the top positions separated by very few points.
"There are many teams who are fighting for the top places in the standings," he continued. "It's a nice small group and it will not be easy until the end."
Milan boast six players that are on senior international duty tonight with their respective national teams.
Milan is a world class team and part of that package is having players from all over the world who represent their national teams at international level.
Tonight sees a number of friendly internationals and World Cup qualifiers take place, and a number of Rossoneri are duly involved.
Italy take on Greece in Athens tonight, and Milan's very own Genaro Gattuso and Daniele Bonera are currently in the Greek capital preparing for the friendly.
Brazil is also involved in a prestigious friendly against European heavyweights Portugal, and this match-up will have Alexandre Pato and Ricardo Kaka representing the blue and gold of the Selecao.
Marek Jankulovski is another Rossonero on international duty, as the Czech Republic have a World Cup qualifying engagement with San Marino to attend to.
The last of the Milan players involved in tonight's senior matches is Uruguayan youngster Mathias Cardacio, who will represent
his country in a friendly against France.
A few of the Milan players are missing out on tonight's encounters through injury; Andrea Pirlo, Gianluca Zambrotta and perhaps even Marco Borriello may have been called up by Marcello Lippi for the Azzurri had they not picked up knocks. The same goes for Ronaldinho, who has been rested by Carlos Dunga.
LOL, I found a very funny picture and wanna know your opinion. Do u think this
picture is funny? Check the funny picture here:

Marcello Lippi was impressed with the way Italy dominated Bulgaria, praising the debutants and the newly-invigorated defence.
This is the most positive aspect, that I saw a strong performance from a side that had some debutants and others who had very few caps to their name, he said of last nights 0-0 draw in Sofia.
The approach of the team that tried to win the match and imposed its tempo on the opposition in difficult circumstances really impressed me. We were a little unlucky with the finishing, but I am very satisfied.
Giuseppe Rossi and Simone Pepe made their senior debuts, while Riccardo Montolivo had only one previous senior appearance in a friendly last year.
Montolivo struggled a little with the habits of our midfielders, as Gennaro Gattuso and Daniele De Rossi are accustomed to going deep to start the moves.
He did it too and it got a bit packed in there, so I kept telling him to move further up the field to find space.
More changes are expected for Wednesdays clash with Montenegro, but Luca Toni is unavailable after picking up a suspension.
My intention was to rotate the squad and we really couldve done without that yellow card for Luca. He came on 20 minutes from the end and dived straight in to help his teammates, a little too much with that mistimed tackle.
Lippi had warned of Manchester United hitman Dimitar Berbatov before the match, but Giorgio Chiellini kept him very quiet.
We had seen Bulgarias games and knew that 90 per cent of their attacking potential was based on this player, but this time he ran into a very strong defence in the form of Chiellini, Fabio Cannavaro, Andrea Dossena and Gianluca Zambrotta.
I am glad to see that performance, as recently we had lost that defensive solidity that is the bedrock of any great team.
Marco Amelia only had one save to make in the 88th minute, as Bulgaria created very few problems for the Azzurri.
I thought Bulgaria would play a little more attacking and with more initiative. Instead they sat back and sought Berbatovs head with long balls. It wasnt easy for our strikers to break down a team that was so clammed up.
Daniele De Rossi has praised Italy's revamped side and welcomed in the next generation of Azzurri.
This was always the great thing about this squad, that it can allow youngsters to settle in, and I am one of the prime examples of that, said the Roma midfielder.
Marcello Lippi made sweeping changes to his team for the 0-0 World Cup qualifier with Bulgaria, lowering the average age of the starting XI from 29 to 27.
Simone Pepe and Giuseppe Rossi made their debuts and Riccardo Montolivo also made the definitive step up from the Under-21 side.
We saw some definite improvements from recent games and that leads us to be optimistic, continued De Rossi.
I am happy in this side, feel relaxed with the team and it's not easy considering the difference from the everyday work of a club situation.
Amelia -6.0: The Palermo goalkeeper did the job on the night. Had the odd shaky moment but was a spectator for most of the game as Bulgaria hardly threatened.
Zambrotta -6.5: The Milan man was his usual self. Always battling hard for his side and his work rate was superb. His runs down the right always caused a problem and gave his side some much needed support up top.
Chiellini -6.5: A rock at the back and he made light work of Berbatov as the Bulgarian striker was shackled. Chiellini was first to everything and he won the battle on the day as Berba was kept at bay.
Cannavaro -6.5: The captain was a rock at the back for his side. Always calm, composed and collected as he marshalled the backline with authority and his commanding presence ensured his team was never in
danger. Dossena -5.5: The Liverpool man was brilliant down the wing but he let him self down a number of times with some uncertain passing and inaccurate crosses. Gattuso -6.0: The Calabrian hustled and did all the dirt work. Never afraid to stick his foot in. He controlled and ran the midfield as he showed everyone he is boss.
De Rossi -7.5: His passing clearly comes from the Francesco Totti school of football. He moved the ball as if he was using laser guidance. Almost every pass hit its target. Pulled the strings and almost scored a wonder free kick. A great display by the Roman.
Montolivo -6.0: The Fiorentina midfielder did his job efficiently but at times he looked out of position and he didn't offer all the support his players needed throughout the game. However he made up for it with some clever play. Pepe 7.0: He proved just why Lippi called him up to the national team. He was
superb down the right and battled away all night. His crossing was dangerous and he had the quick feet and brain to keep the ball rolling in every sense.
Gilardino -5.5: Great for his club, struggled to make any impact against Bulgaria. He looked isolated but he did make some good runs in behind but he lacked the service he thrives upon. An average game. Di Natale 5.0: Toto drifted in and out of the match. He made some wrong choices throughtout. Should have passed instead of shoot and cice versa. Errors which could have been avoided.
Simone Pepe and Giuseppe Rossi made good debuts as Italy grabbed a point in their goalless draw away to Bulgaria.
Marcello Lippi made wholesale changes, as he was without the injured Gianluigi Buffon, Andrea Pirlo and Mauro Camoranesi, leaving Alex Del Piero, Andrea Barzagli and Antonio Cassano behind. Simone Pepe got his international debut to start alongside Udinese teammate Antonio Di Natale and Fiorentina's Alberto Gilardino. Riccardo Montolivo got his first competitive cap at senior level, preferred to Simone Perrotta.
The average age of the Azzurri line-up was 27, though Italy had never won in Sofia.
Gilardino had a great chance after three minutes when a scuffed defensive clearance turned into an assist for Gilardino, but the goalkeeper managed to get a foot to it from six yards, avoiding a penalty and a goal. From the resulting corner Giorgio Chiellini just failed to make contact from two yards.
Gilardino and Pepe got in each others' way to meet an Andrea Dossena cross, but Fabio Cannavaro charged down a Dimitar Berbatov overhead kick. Gila was flagged offside as he tried to get on the end of a scuffed Di Natale effort and Gennaro Gattuso's strike was deflected out for a corner.
Chiellini went into the book for halting a Berbatov counter and Martin Petrov blasted the resulting free kick over the bar. Bulgaria lost Wagner to a muscular problem, making way for Ivan Ivanov.
A poor Dossena backpass almost let Martin Petrov through with nobody between him and the goal, but Marco Amelia rushed out to clear midway up his own half.
After the restart Georgiev scuffed a shot wide and curled a free kick well over, but Montolivo's chipped pass was cleared between Gilardino and Pepe. Dimitar Ivankov plucked a corner kick off the head of Chiellini, but moments later Gilardino's hair skimmed a fierce Pepe set-piece and any contact may well have beaten the Bulgarian goalkeeper from six yards.
Lippi further lowered the average age of the squad by giving Giuseppe Rossi his senior debut for Di Natale and Simone Perrotta replacing the ineffective Montolivo.
Rossi made an immediate impact and threaded through for Gilardino, who got in front of his marker, but was put under pressure and drilled just past the near post. It was to be Gila's final contribution, as he made way for Luca Toni.
A screamer of a half-volley from Daniele De Rossi dipped on to the roof of the net, missing the crossbar by a matter of inches.
Pepe was furious when he burst into the box only to be called back for a handling offence, as replays showed the ball struck his chest.
Amelia had to make his first save after 87 minutes, at full stretch to fingertip a Yankov snapshot off target from 25 metres. The Palermo goalkeeper also got back up to snatch the loose ball away from Berbatov.
De Rossi's free kick whipped inches wide of the near post with Ivankov beaten. There was bad news, as Toni was booked for a late tackle in stoppages and will therefore be suspended for Wednesday's match with Montenegro.
Ivankov came tearing out for a shaky clearance as Pepe ran on to a smart cross-field Rossi pass on the counter-attack.
Milan and Italy defender Gianluca Zambrotta has taken a swipe at the English game, insisting that they have no right to criticise the Italians after the Three Lions failed to qualify for Euro 2008.
Zambrotta has reignited the fiery slanging match between England and Italy after he was asked what he thought of an article published in The Times, which described Serie A as a retirement home for old players, and a get rich quick scheme.
The stopper has hit back with some tough words for the English.
Retirement home? Thats all I need at 31, joked Zambrotta.
I have all the experience to be able to motivate myself.
What makes me laugh is that the English are always the first to talk when they should be the last. Just look at them, they didnt even qualify for Euro 2008.
Certainties
The former Barcelona man then spoke about his new life at Milan following his return to Serie A and he insists that the game in Italy is always moving onwards and upwards.
The impact of Milan is simple: they are a top club and well organised like Juventus, added
Zambro.
I think the quality of Serie A has improved, but then you always have the same certainties like Maurizio Zamparini firing the coach after the first game.
The Rossonero is currently on international duty with La Nazionale as he tries to help defend the World Cup trophy they won in 2006.
Italy have travelled to Lanarca to take on Cyprus on Saturday night in group 8 of the World Cup South Africa 2010 qualifying campaign.
MILAN - Today the Italian national team's qualifying adventure for the 2010 World Cup starts: the Azzurri, once again under the leadership of Marcello Lippi, will debut tonight at Larnaca against Cyprus.
A NEW ADVENTURE
9/6/2008 1:52:00 PM
The Azzurri are in Cyprus for their debut in the World Cup qualification journey for South Africa 2010: tonight appointment at Larnaca with Zambrotta, Pirlo, and Gattuso. Not only Italy: also Kala, Sheva, and Flamini will be on the pitch tonight with their national teams.
MILAN - Also in Europe the journey for the 2010 World Cup in South Africa begins tonight (elsewhere it has already started). The run-up will last fifteen months and will give the opportunity to 13 national teams to reach the finals of the World Cup. There are 53 national teams competing, divided into 9 groups. From Europe 13 teams will advance. To reach the draw, which will take place on 4 December 2009 in Cape Town, it's important to win the group. Otherwise the second place will be necessary. The eight best second-placed teams will face each other in four play-offs with the home and away formula. Africa will have six places, South America will get four, with the fifth in a play-off against the fourth-placed North American team. Four spots also for Asia, with the fifth in a play-off against the winner of Oceania.
Eight Rossoneri were called up for these first games: three Azzurri, Gattuso, Pirlo and Zambrotta, with the last two probably playing from the start in tonight's match. In fact the Italian national team's adventure begins tonight, for the second time under Marcello Lippi, as they debut tonight at Larnaca against Cyprus. Wednesday it's time for Italy-Georgia at Udine, with the match between the three Azzurri and Kakha Kaladze.
Here is the program:
RINO GATTUSO, ANDREA PIRLO AND GIANLUCA ZAMBROTTA Saturday 6 September: Cyprus-Italy, 21.15, at Larnaca - Wednesday 10 September: Italy-Georgia, 20.50, at Udine.
KALADZE Saturday 6 September: Georgia-Ireland, 18.00, at Mainz (Germany) - Wednesday 10 September: Italy-Georgia, 20.50, at Udine.
ANDRIY SHEVCHENKO Saturday 6 September: Ukraine-Belarus, 19.00, at Lviv - Wednesday 10 September: Kazakhstan-Ukraine, at Almaty.
MATHIEU FLAMINI Saturday 6 September: Austria-France, 20.30, at Vienna - Wednesday 10 September: France-Serbia, at Paris-Saint Denis.
MAREK JANKULOVSKI Wednesday 10 September: Northern Ireland-Czech Republic, at Belfast.
RONALDINHO Chile-Brazil, at Santiago de Chile (tomorrow, 3.00 CET) - Wednesday 10
September: Brazil-Bolivia, at Rio de Janeiro. SOUTH AMERICA STANDINGS Paraguay 13; Argentina 11; Colombia and Chile 10; Brazil 9; Uruguay 8, Venezuela 7; Ecuador 5; Bolivia 4; Peru 3.
Alessandro Del Piero is still not training and therefore out of tonights qualifier with Cyprus, so Marcello Lippi could adopt a Brazil-style system.
The Juventus captain was a doubt to even make the trip out to Cyprus for the opener of the 2010 World Cup games due to a muscular problem in his left thigh.
He trained separately from the rest of the squad in this mornings session and did not take part in the game between ranks, so he is highly unlikely to feature.
Lippi tested out the unusual pairing of Luca Toni and Alberto Gilardino upfront, fuelling reports he is to introduce the 4-2-2-2 system used by Brazil.
This would see Antonio Di Natale and Mauro Camoranesi providing support for the strikers with Andrea Pirlo and Daniele De Rossi shoring up the midfield.
Inevitably it requires some sacrifice and hard work from the Udinese and Juventus players, who must come back to help out when losing possession.
Alessandro Gamberini is the favourite to take over in central defence alongside the returning Fabio Cannavaro.
The Selecao used this tactic in order to field Ronaldinho, Kaka, Robinho and Adriano in the same line-up.
It is not a system that can be used in every encounter, but following the 2-2 friendly draw with Austria, Lippi is eager to go on the attack against Cyprus and break the deadlock early on.
