Hey Cliff,
You do keep busy! How do you find time to train?
So if bikes need to be racked Friday for the Spudman how early can the
locals start to rack so as to help alleviate congestion later that
night?
~Alice
I am interested in the bike race leg for a team of Men 60+ if you have any withdrawals from the race.
Our family will be coming to the race as our daughter is participating & I would like to race if possible. I am 60 & compete in local bike races & in the World Senior Games.

Cliff,
Firstly, thank you very much for taking the time to provide a very
decent response to my question. That is what has been so impressive
about the Spudman: the people involved in the organization of the
event are spectacular. Now, to answer your question: If I remember
correctly, I registered online via Active.com last year.
Well, I am crossing my fingers that there is still hope this year.
Keep up the good work.
Kind Regards,
Cris

comment: Lions Club should make a 5 year club (or something like
that) kind of like the St. George Marathon does that allows loyal
participants that have registered for the event for 5 years eligible
for guaranteed entry. St. George Marathon also guarantees entry to
local residents of the county. Burely Lions Club should do the
same. After all, it is the least you could do for the loyal people
who have supported this event ever since it had just a few hundred
participants. I guess I am feeling a little bit betrayed :-).

Hey Cliff,
I know there are many disappointed folks out there who may not get to do the
Spudman, but I just want to say that many of us here see how hard you, the
Lions Club and the community are trying to make this event work out under
the circumstances. It is an amazing problem to have, really, given that
Burley is the small farming community that it is. I appreciate the
collective creative thinking that is going on here and hope that there will
be a way to satisfy the masses.

The cap was decided upon by the committee. (I was not there to vote so don't shoot the messenger here.. ha)
The sherrif was asking for a cap of 1000 for his logistical purposes. We had a bike rack space issue at the time also and we were not confident that we could manage over 1000. We have never reached 1000 so the committee felt that putting the cap at 1000 was a pretty safe bet and that everyone who typically comes would be able to participate again.
We also have some logistical considerations when it comes to our motel, hotel, and campground capacity.
The committee has been proactive however, in addressing many of these issues. We convinced the sherrif that many of his logistical problems could be solved by having the bikes dropped off the night before, rather than the morning of.
We have found some more camp ground spots too.
The committee basically did not want to bite off more than they could chew and ruin the experience for the participants.
With the changes they were willing to consider a 300 person increase so the actual cap on this years' race is 1300. If all goes well, and some other changes are implemented then the cap will likely be increased beyond 1300 next year.
We have done some new things to make more room. We are changing the finish line location, providing more room for bike racks and shoes etc.. We have purchased more bike racks so that we don't have to transport the same bike racks from t-1 to t-2 in the middle of the race. I already mentioned the change in when the bikes are dropped off. Last year we expanded the registration period and will do that again this year.
So.. I think the committee is trying to get more people in. It kills all of us to have to say "no" to people, especially those that are long time supporters and participants.
There is still hope for even this year that everyone who wants to get in will have a decent chance, depending on how things go over the next few weeks. All of those 300 that were allowed an opportunity to get in, will not follow through. There will also be an email sent out to everyone that is registered, explaining that there is a big waiting list and inviting people to withdraw if they think they won't make it or whatever.
It is hard to know where to draw the line. Once the race easily handles the 1300 of this year, they will increase the cap for next year without hesitation.
There are a few other changes in the works too, which I am not at liberty to announce or discuss that should allow for greater capacity.
Your story, by the way, is not unique. We have several people on the waiting list who are long time participants who didn't get registered early and are currently locked out.
Here is a survey question for you. Did your register online or by paper form LAST YEAR?
Later..

Hi Cliff,
I just wondered where on the waiting list my name is found? Maybe that is
classified information.:):) Remember me with the faulty email? I thought I
was on the list and then when I read responses from the yahoogroup I
realized I should've received a confirming email. Hense, I missed the cut.
I also wondered if it mattered if I have a team or if I have to do the whole
thing? I had knee surgery and want to break it up because of recovery.
This being the reason I did not register sooner. Recovery was quicker than
planned and now I wish I'd signed up and then withdrawn if needed. Well
thanks for the email and information. I appreciate your effort to inform.
etc.
Thanks Again,
Sheri Greener

I figure there ought to be SOME small benefit to belonging to this little yahoogroup besides being able to talk with one another about triathlons and such. Maybe I can feed you a little "behind the scenes" information on the Spudman. (ha)
Registration opened at noon today for the extra 300 that were on the waiting list. 45 people/teams have followed through and have registered as of 10:47pm PST.
There have been a small number of "withdrawls" from the race over the last few days also. I'd guess about 3.
It will be interesting to see how many more people beyond the 300 on the waiting list get to essentially move up, as a result of withdrawls or people not following through on their non-refundable 2nd chance registration.
Elena..
In order to get on the waiting list you must send a request to be put
on the waiting list to spudman@...
The race capacity was already increased by another 300 spots and 300
people on the waiting list are getting in. Those below those 300 on
the waiting list will only move up as people withdraw from the race or
do not follow through with their registration by May 27th.
For people to withdraw from the race they just need to send an email to
the same address: spudman@... and say that they can't make
it. The club will then write them a check or their credit card will be
refunded minus their registration processing fee and the club $5.00
processing fee.

Cliff,
Thanks for the heads up! Do you happen to know what the chances are
of me getting in then? Or about how long it will be before new spots
open? What happens to people who can't race? Do they just contact
the org and get their money back? A lot of questions, sorry.
Anything you can do to help me!

Hey..
It's cool you want to do the race so badly. If you are offered
a "slot" for sale by a participant that is willing to withdraw, DO NOT
BUY. You will be stuck holding the bag because the club will not allow
slots to be sold or swapped out to other people.

I don't think I ever received a confirmation on my waiting list email.
I ended up sending in twice, from 2 different emails to be sure.
Waiting.

Thanks for the info. I did receive an email back - that was on April
18th. Hopefully I am not at the bottom of the list. I have been
checking the website quite often for updates, so I'm sure if
anything changes, I'll know it.
Thanks

If you received an email back from spudman@... saying you
were added to the waiting list then you know you are on it.
You will not know where you are on the waiting list and or whether you
will be eligible to participate for about 7 more days. (hopefully
less)
I know it is stressful.
The race coordinator met with the final fellow who had to give final
approval today. I hope to learn by tonight.
Blogs have been placed on the main page of

Cole.. what is your last name? if you are on a team, what was the name of the team leader that registered you?
At first glance I didn't see any "cole's" when I searched on first names.

I guess where I live it is 21 minutes past midnight so I am keeping
with my word concerning posting information on why the Spudman
Triathlon was capped at 1000 for this year.
1. the sherrif's office was concerned about their ability to handle
the traffic and crowds.
2. There was some concern about having enough room in transition area
1 for more bikes.
3. Who knows.. I was not at the meeting where this was decided.
I am no expert but I have participated in some triathlons in Los
Angeles, San Francisco, and San Diego and learned a few things from
my observations there. I think that with a few modifications, the
Spudman race could accommodate more than 1000 bib numbers.
The 1000 cap is currently being evaluated for THIS year because the
race filled up so fast and we have so many people piling onto the
waiting list.
I am not the final decision maker, I only have one vote, but my 'GUT'
feeling is that the limit will be raised a bit over 1000 for this
year and that some other modifications to the "parking" "transition
areas" and "finish lines" will be put in place to make everyone
happier.
It will be interesting to see how this all shakes out. When it seems
appropriate, I will try to share as much as I can with this yahoo
group.
Sincerely,
Cliff
Yes, I have some information about that which I will post tomorrow when I have a bit more time to choose my words carefully. (I'm not a big supporter of the current cap)
Does anyone know why and when the 1000 participant cap was instituted?
