I see that these are not amongst the programs I reviewed in the article on The Best Graphing Software at Sportscience. Can anyone tell me whether these programs produce graphs that can be taken apart in Powerpoint and other vector-enabled editing programs?  Also, can you customize the plots better than in Excel (e.g., log scales that don’t have to pan factors of 10)?

I’m currently running an iPhone programming course for students in my department. After each weeks class I’m posting summary videos to YouTube, so I thought that others might be interested in following along. No programming experience is required, however you do need access to an Apple Mac running at least OSX Snow Leopard. This is because iOS apps are written in Xcode which is only available for the Mac (sorry Windows users!). More info on registering and downloading Xcode can be found below. It’s free to register as a developer and free to download Xcode, but you need to pay (USD$99/year) in order to install your apps on a device (the free option allows you to run your apps in a simulator on the computer).

https://developer.apple.com/devcenter/ios/index.action

The first three weeks of the course have been completed and I’ve been focusing on the basics of programming first, but in later weeks I’ll go through how to access data from the GPS and the tri-axial accelerometer which are built in to the iPhone. These can be used to track movement, which of course is quite important in our field.

Any questions just drop me a line (g.abt@...).

Cheers,

Grant.

Dear Colleagues

In a major attempt to emphasize the importance of research and evidence-based practical information in advancing all aspects of tennis performance, the Journal of Sports Science and Medicine will publish a Special Issue on Tennis in early 2013. Tennis is one of the few sports in the world that requires very high levels of all major components of fitness: strength, speed, agility, power, or aerobic endurance. Moreover, Tennis is one of the world’s most popular sports enjoyed by millions of people of all ages and abilities. In order to help players, coaches seek assistance from the vast amount of technical coaching information that is available in the market in the form of books, journals or websites. This special issue of the Journal of Sports Science and Medicine calls on authors to submit original research and specific reviews that enriches the current understanding of tennis performance. The scope of the issue will include (but not limited to) all aspects of applied physiology, performance indicators, injury risk and applied coaching.

In memory of Eric Hultman

Roger Harris, Junipa Ltd., Newmarket, UK

Born October 1925 in Kristinehamn in Värmland province, Sweden, Professor Eric
Helmer Hultman gained a Bachelors degree from the Swedish Pharmacology Institute
(1946) before gaining a medical degree from the Karolinska Institute in
Stockholm (1956). It was whilst undertaking his PhD at St
Eriks Hospital, Stockholm in the early 1960's that Eric Hultman, together with
another PhD candidate Jonas Bergstrom, performed the first ever direct studies
in humans on the changes in muscle glycogen with exercise, and the influence of
diet on the resynthesis of this. The innovative studies undertaken at
this time were in many respects the birth of modern human exercise and sports
science, when applied to muscle and exercise metabolism, and the personal
contribution made then by Professor Hultman is today recognised as being one of
the most important in unlocking the potential for study in this discipline.

In 1967 Professor Hultman with others published the first study on the breakdown
and resynthesis of ATP in human muscle in connection with exercise, and the role
played by phosphorylcreatine in the maintenance of ATP supply and fatigue
development in mixed muscle. Seminal papers in the 90's described the increase
of the muscle content of creatine and phosphorylcreatine through the use of
dietary creatine supplementation, a procedure which led to the wide-spread use
of creatine
supplements in sport today, and which re-awakened interest in creatine.

Professor Hultman, whose career involved positions at several Stockholm
hospitals including Huddinge University Hospital and the Karolinska Institute,
was the recipient of awards from the Swedish Medical Society (1966), McMaster
University (1990), the honour award for Biochemistry and Exercise (2000) and a
DSc from the University of Waterloo, and is today recognised as one of several
giants in muscle and exercise biochemistry and physiology to emerge from
Scandinavia during the 1960's.

Hi All,

Apologies for the email intrusion. I'm working on a variety of pieces for
ESPN the Magazine and Popular Science for a roundup of science related
stories for the upcoming summer Olympics. We're looking for anything that is
cutting edge for the games: gear, equipment, research, rehab, training,
judging, media, trends, controversies. Need ideas ASAP (Wednesday at the
latest). Could be for any of the sports. If you don't have any relevant
ideas feel free to forward to those who might. Willing to work on embargo
where necessary and appropriate.

If you don't have anything that fits this request, I'm always looking for
other ideas for a variety of outlets. Please send whatever ideas you have
and I'm sure we can get some coverage.

Thanks in advance,

Brett

I'm running another master class on design and analysis on the morning of
registration of this year's annual meeting of the European College of Sport
Science. This year I think it will be good to focus on how to use and
interpret the spreadsheets at the Sportscience site. In the process we will
cover important issues about effect magnitudes, acceptable uncertainty,
sample size for different designs, measurement statistics, and so on. There
will be a new spreadsheet on bootstrapping by then, too, which I will
introduce you to. These classes are informal, and I am happy to discuss
specific questions or cover specific topics requested by attendees. Some of
my colleagues may help out.

I'll sort out a venue at the meeting when I know how many people hope to
turn up. (It was around 30 last year at the Liverpool meeting.) So please
get back to me if you would like to attend. You might prefer the interesting
official workshop running in parallel, this year on scientific presentation
skills. See http://www.ecss-congress.eu/2012/index.php/ecss-workshop .

I am also going to the ICSEMIS conference in Glasgow and the WCPAS
conference in Worcester. At this stage I haven't planned to present master
classes there, but if enough people want them, I will. Again, get back to
me.

Benefits and Mechanisms of Adaptation for Essential Tremor Patients Performing Resistance Training

We are seeking a highly motivated individual with a Honours or Masters degree in health, exercise or sport science, physiotherapy, neuroscience or similar areas of study to undertake a 3-year PhD scholarship valued at up to $AUS30,000 per year within the Faculty of Health Sciences and Medicine at Bond University, Gold Coast, Australia. Some experience with essential tremor patients or other movement disorders would be advantageous but not essential.  The intended project seeks to improve the health and quality of life of individuals with essential tremor via the use of resistance training.  Specifically, this PhD aims to extend our recently published preliminary work on the benefits of resistance training for individuals with essential tremor, and identify the CNS mechanisms associated with resistance training that may cause improvements in movement control. This study will be the first to examine the effects of RT on ET patients by combining real-world assessments of manual dexterity with detailed assessments of neuromotor function.
