My report on the annual conference of the European College of Sport Science
is now available at Sportscience http://sportsci.org/ . If you can't see
the latest homepage with the link to the report, flush the caches between
you and the site by doing a control-shift-refresh.

Read the report to find out about accessing the abstracts, which probably
won't be available at the conference site. They're not there yet, anyway.

Doctoral Scholarship
Children's mobility and physical activity in higher density urban neighbourhoods

Applications are invited from suitably qualified individuals for a Health
Research Council of New Zealand funded PhD scholarship. The successful applicant
will join an established team of researchers from Massey University, University
of Auckland and Auckland University of Technology (AUT), in Auckland, New
Zealand. The student will be based at the Centre for Physical Activity and
Nutrition at AUT. The scholarship is valued at NZ $25,000 p.a. (tax exempt) for
three years. A full or partial tuition fee waiver may also apply.

Study overview
This research will be located in Auckland, New Zealand and is concerned with
understanding how neighbourhood environments can foster children's independent
mobility- outdoor play and active transport (e.g. walking/cycling) - to increase
physical activity and participation in urban life. At issue is the recursive
relationship between place and wellbeing, with everyday practices affected by
both the nature of urban spaces and perceptions of them as safe and desirable,
or otherwise. The study aims to understand how urban design factors influence
children's wellbeing by investigating the neighbourhood experiences, independent
mobility, and physical activity of children 8-11 years living in higher
deprivation Auckland neighbourhoods of differing dwelling density.

The successful candidate will work with children aged 8-11 years and their
parents, to understand how urban design factors influence children's physical
activity and independent mobility. It is envisaged the area of PhD study will
focus on independent mobility and physical activity and the relationships
between these variables and children's social and/or built environments. The
successful applicant will share responsibility for the collection and analysis
of data, including fieldwork and the use of accelerometry and global positioning
systems.

Applying for the Scholarship
It is expected the candidate will hold an Honours or Masters degree in human
movement science, exercise science, health promotion, epidemiology, geography or
a related area and be able to demonstrate previous research experience.

Applicants must meet the University's selection criteria for entry into the PhD.

Dear Colleagues,
I self-published a book examining T. Colin Campbell's research in, "The China
Study." He presented an interesting hypothesis that argues animal-source foods
are trigger compromised health but that whole plant food nutrition establishes
health. Campbell's science is responsible, deserving critical review. I examined
how this nutrition protocol would impact body mass index (BMI) and serum
cholesterol for a 90-day period. For 20-years, my cholesterol levels range
between 217-232. After removing all animal foods from diet, eating only a whole
plant food menu for 90-days, my BMI decreased from 22.0 to a slim 20.5 and my
total cholesterol 232 plummeted to 151. After 9-month study of Campbell's
material, I wrote a book, entitled "Phytonutrition: Finding Fitness for Life!"
This protocol shows not only "What worked for me," but it documents that a
number of serious health issues may be resolved through whole plant food
nutrition. I present no competing interests; all proceeds from this book are
donated to the T. Colin Campbell Foundation.

Journalist, Denise Minger, recently wrote an article criticizing "The China
Study." Her findings are void of statistical or an epidemiological review. Ms.
Minger is an English major whose writing presents a basis interest in nutrition.

Dear List Members,

I am working with a company using TCG (Thoracocardiography)which measures
cardiac state via an assesment of the mechanical movements of the heart. TCG
allows for a continuous, real time, non-invasive measure of cardiac output and
stroke volume. The measures are acquired in the same manner in which we may
acquire heart rate with a HR monitor, with a strap over the left ventricle.

Beside its use in health care with cardiac patients, we were interested in
whether these measures may be relevant in exercise physiology. One example I
thought was in the identification of dehydration rates or the onset of
dehydration, as stroke volume decreases with dehydration. Reference: J Appl
Physiol. 1997 Apr;82(4):1229-36.
Dehydration markedly impairs cardiovascular function in hyperthermic endurance
athletes during exercise. González-Alonso J, Mora-Rodríguez R, Below PR, Coyle
EF

Despite further searches I have not found any features of exercise physiology or
references that described using cardiac output, that could not be obtained with
a simple heart rate monitor.

I would appreciate any references, suggestions or comments the group may have on
how measuring cardiac output and stroke volume may be used to optimize training
and performance in sport.

Thanks and I will post a summary of replies.

I've received a message from someone on this list calling into question the
credentials of Bill Misner, who posted the advertisement for his book on
phytonutrition. Bill was apparently accredited by the Clayton College of
Natural Health. This "college" closed recently and is the topic of a
critical item on Quackwatch, which as far as I know is a trustworthy source
of information about, well, quackery. (If anyone on this list knows any
different, please post me or the list accordingly.) See
http://www.quackwatch.com/04ConsumerEducation/Nonrecorg/clayton.html for
more.

I think it's my duty to advise you to use evidence as the basis for
decisions about anything that could affect your health, wealth or
performance. If you find it too difficult or too time-consuming to amass
and evaluate the evidence yourself, the next best thing is to follow the
advice of people we call experts. Trustworthy credentials then become
important, along with a good dose of skepticism.

Call for Papers: Special Issue on 'Golf Biomechanics'

In a major attempt to emphasize the importance of biomechanics research in advancing all aspects of golf performance, the Sports Biomechanics journal will publish a special issue on Golf Biomechanics in 2011. Golf is one of the world’s most popular sports enjoyed by millions of people of all ages and abilities. However, the task of hitting a golf ball with power and accuracy is a most challenging motor skill from a biomechanical perspective. The full golf swing is a mechanically complex, asymmetrical multi-planar movement of multiple body segments that are actuated by the powerful and precisely timed contractions of a number of skeletal muscles. In order to hit the ball more effectively, golfers seek assistance from the vast amount of technical coaching information that is available in the market such as books, magazines, websites and DVDs. Unfortunately, there is not a corresponding amount of in-depth peer-reviewed biomechanical research on the golf swing in the literature. This special issue of Sports Biomechanics calls on authors to submit original research that enriches the current understanding of golf swing biomechanics. The scope of the research will include (but not be limited to) all aspects of biomechanics research related to golf swing technique with respect to motion pattern understanding, performance indicators, injury risk mechanisms and applied coaching. Multidisciplinary fields in golf research will also be considered, if there is a significant biomechanics component in the analysis methodology. There is a strong focus on applied methodologies in order to reach a wide readership. Golf coaches are also encouraged to collaborate with biomechanics researchers.

Author Guidelines and Submission Deadline:

Instructions for authors and submission guidelines can be found at the Journal's homepage: http://www.tandf.co.uk/journals/authors/rspbauth.asp. Deadline for full paper submission is December 15, 2010.

All papers will be subjected to the peer-review procedures of the Journal. Papers should be submitted online at http://mc.manuscriptcentral.com/rspb. Mark that the manuscript is for a special issue and enter 'Golf Biomechanics' as the issue title.

Sports Biomechanics

Call for Papers: Special Issue - “Hit the Ball”

Hit the Ball.  It sounds simple, but the biomechanics of successful hitting are complex.  In fact, in a USA Today survey, hitting a baseball, hitting a golf ball, and returning a tennis serve were 3 of the 5 hardest things to do in sports (www.usatoday.com/sports/ten-hardest-splash.htm).  In an attempt to address this challenge, the Sports Biomechanics journal will publish a special issue in 2011.  This special issue will include original research and review articles.  Submitted articles can present biomechanical data on hitting the ball in baseball, softball, tennis, cricket, table tennis, racquetball, squash, field hockey, or other sports.  Articles should generate knowledge to improve sports performance and/or reduce the incidence of injury, and to communicate this knowledge to sports scientists, coaches, and sports participants.  Possible topics include swing kinematics, kinetics, factors related to ball exit velocity, injury mechanism, equipment properties related to ball impact and hitting performance, etc.

Author Guidelines and Submission Deadline:

Instructions for authors and submission guidelines can be found at the journal's homepage:

http://www.tandf.co.uk/journals/authors/rspbauth.asp.

All papers will be subjected to the peer-review procedures of the journal.  Papers should be submitted online at http://mc.manuscriptcentral.com/rspb.  Mark that the manuscript is for a special issue and enter “Hit the Ball” as the issue title.

Deadline for full paper submission is January 15, 2011.

The abstract below describes the Red Bull Human Express Project. This ultra-endurance project provides daily updates on a select number of physiological and performance parameters which should be of interest to exercise and sports scientists, and in particular, to students in the exercise and sports sciences.

Ultramarathon events impose significant physiological stresses on the human body. On September 15, 2010, a man will attempt to run the Pony Express Route, the length of the mail delivery system in the late 1800’s from St. Joseph, Missouri to Sacramento, California. The Pony Express route is approximately 2180 miles in length, traverses a variety of geographical terrain, with the runner being exposed to a range of environmental conditions. To complete the run, the runner will need to cover approximately 50 miles each day, 7 days per week, for 6 consecutive weeks.  To assess the effect of this extreme performance task on the human body, scientific methods and research principles will be applied to daily monitoring of: morning resting HR, resting oxygen saturation, fasted blood glucose and lactate, hemoglobin concentration, creatine kinase, urea, sodium, as well as urine specific gravity. Additionally, weekly measurements will assess acute and chronic immune system stress via blood inflammatory markers, oxidative stress via urine measures, and generalized stress via salivary cortisol and testosterone. Furthermore, run performance each day will be recorded and will include average heart rate, average speed, ventilation, excess post exercise oxygen consumption (EPOC), and estimated calories expended. In addition to the above measures, a variety of other assessments including: sleep quality, body composition, daily nutrient intake, psychological measures, and self-report data on metrics of run and recovery performance will be recorded.  Based on the interpretation of the above metrics, daily adjustments will be made to exercise intensity, nutrient and fluid intake, and recovery methods in order to optimize the runner’s physiological function.

Track Karl Meltzer as he traverses on foot the Pony Express Route, and post commentary on his performance if you feel inclined to. Uploads of the science data are dependent on cellular and internet service availability, and not all metrics being recorded each day and week are presented at the website. The website link is at;

Hello All,

ESPN the Magazine is working on its Winter X Games preview issue and would
like a compilation of new cutting edge science/technology that will be on
the snow in any of the three disciplines - snowboard, skiing, snowmobile.
Could be equipment the athletes are using for training, competition, view
enhancements, recovery, etc.

We need an initial list THIS WEEK, so please submit ideas asap. Focus on a
few key points: what discipline/athletes will be using or benefit from the
advancement? when did the technology first hit the market? what makes the
technology unique when compared to what's on the market (and your own
previous versions)?

As always, please forward any other ideas not related to the WinterX. Plenty
of outlets are always looking for innovative and groundbreaking technology,
science, research. Earlier I know about the concept, best our chances are
for coverage.

Thanks, and sorry for the email intrusion,

Brett Zarda

Subject: Bias in research, and a solution

Two colleagues have independently emailed me a link to an article about the
high level of bias in published medical and other research. The purpose of
this posting is to call your attention to the article, and to start a
discussion on what we can do about the problem in exercise and sport
science.

The article, titled Lies, Damned Lies, and Medical Science, is about the
work of the doughty and apparently renowned John Ioannidis, a researcher
based in Greece I hadn't heard of. See
http://www.theatlantic.com/magazine/print/2010/11/lies-damned-lies-and-medic
al-science/8269 . The article is published in the November issue of The
Atlantic, which is a left-leaning US magazine free of in-your-face
advertisements and aimed at widening the horizons of its readers. The
articles can be accessed free on line. There is the usual main-stream media
obsession with the rich, famous, powerful and quirky.

Here are the main points in the article. "80 percent of non-randomized
[i.e., observational] studies (by far the most common type) turn out to be
wrong, as do 25 percent of supposedly gold-standard randomized trials, and
as much as 10 percent of the platinum-standard large randomized trials.
between a third and a half of the most acclaimed research in medicine [is]
untrustworthy. " Ioannidis is quoted as saying we have to be up front with
these shortcomings of research, and that only a small fraction of research
leads to anything useful. If he has any positive suggestions for researchers
who have to win funding and publish or perish in the deeply flawed
peer-reviewed journal environment, they aren't in this article.

I'll kick off a discussion with a suggestion by Franco Impellizzeri at the
end of my report on the ECSS conference
http://www.sportsci.org/2010/wghECSS.htm . "Finally and importantly, a
systematic review of the quality of training studies in soccer reached the
conclusion that it was generally poor. The presenter [Franco] recommended
setting up a register for controlled trials in sport and exercise science,
similar to the register for medical research. I agree: it would raise the
standard and reduce publication bias by getting more inconclusive, unclear
and non-significant findings into print." The idea is that, once
registered, a study would be practically guaranteed publication. The
registration process would require peer review of the proposed research, and
feedback from reviewers would then lead to improvements in study design
before the study is performed. Provided the study was carried out
pretty-much as proposed and approved, the proposal and the study would be
published together. If the study fell over for whatever reason, the
proposal would still be published with an account of the failure, to allow
meta-analysts to perform an "intention-to-research" kind of analysis,
similar to the intention-to-treat analysis of controlled trials. This
process would not only reduce bias, it would also lead us away from the
culture of manuscript rejection that seems to have got worse over the last
few years.

One of the new on-line journals would be the best to host such a system,
maybe even WebMedCentral, which I mentioned in my latest impact-factor
article http://www.sportsci.org/2010/wghif.htm . I can't see the
traditional journals changing their modus operandi to something this radical
any time soon.
