It is my great pleasure to announce the launch of a new electronic
journal called Sports Medicine, Arthroscopy, Rehabilitation Therapy &
Technology (ˇ§SMARTTˇ¨).
ˇ§SMARTTˇ¨ is an Open Access electronic journal, providing free
access to the articles that it publishes after peer review. The
objective of this journal is to provide rapid transmission of
information amongst the multidisciplinary groups of orthopaedic
sports medicine, to provide an open access for people who work in
these fields and to inspire the clinicians, practitioners, scientists
and engineers to work towards the common goal of improving quality of
life in the international community.
The embracing content of ˇ§SMARTTˇ¨ includes the followings:
Sports medicine
Sports medicine is itself a field that has cross-discipline
dimensions and includes specific fields of Sports traumatology,
cardiology, endocrinology accident and emerging medicine, physiology,
biochemistry, biomechanics, each serving a specific domain but at the
same time relate to the other subspecialties in the overall care of
athletes.
Arthroscopy
Arthroscopy embraces all modalities of surgical treatment related to
arthroplasty and sports injuries with specific reference to major
joints such as knee, shoulder and ankle. This will include osteotomy,
total joint replacement, and minimal invasive surgery and navigation
& computer assisted surgery.
Sports rehabilitation
Rehabilitation is an integral part in the overall management; it
entails a comprehensive program of treatment with the allied health
professionals, performance optimization, preventive measures and
outcome evaluation.
Therapy
Therapy embraces all modalities of surgical treatment related to
arthroplasty and sports injuries with specific reference to major
joints such as knee, shoulder and ankle. This will include osteotomy,
total joint replacement, and minimal invasive surgery and navigation
& computer assisted surgery.
Technology
Technology is the leading front to serve biomechanical and biological
update research where new ideas are being tested, developed and
applied in the field.
Multidisciplinary research with collaboration amongst clinicians and
scientists from different disciplines will be the trend in the coming
decades. ˇ§SMARTTˇ¨ will provide the platform for exchange of new
clinical and scientific information in the most precise and
expeditious way to achieve timely dissemination of information and
cross-fertilization of ideas.
The journal will be published by the international publisher BioMed
Central, with the Asia Pacific Orthopaedic Society for Sports
Medicine (APOSSM) being the leading organization. The supporting
organizations are wide-reaching. They include Japanese Orthopaedic
Society for Knee Surgery Arthroscopy and Sports Medicine, Asian
Shoulder Association, Asian Federation of Sports Medicine, Hong Kong
Association of Sports Medicine and Sports Science and The Hong Kong
Jockey Club Sports Medicine and Health Sciences Centre, The Chinese
University of Hong Kong.
