Effect of air resistance on running speed   Message List
Reply | Forward Message #2630 of 3441 |
A question has arisen as to the difference in the power demand of running on your own vs the reduced demand when running in a pack, when you get some benefit from "drafting" (running in the draft of runners in front of you).  Top runners in an endurance event will be motoring along at ~20 km/h, and if the effect of air resistance at this speed is ~1%, drafting will be important.

The paper where the effect of air resistance is quantified is this:
Pugh LGCE (1970). Oxygen intake in track and treadmill running with observations on the effect of air resistance. Journal of Physiology 207, 823-835

I used to access the personal copies of J Physiol of a former colleague, but that's no longer an option in my present job and our electronic access goes back only to 1985.  I have also searched old Sportscience messages, but no joy (although the above reference was there in connection with a question in Jan 2000 about uphill running).

Can anyone supply me with the formula for the effect of wind speed?
