Position Summary
This position is located within the Exercise Metabolism research group, in the laboratory of Dr Glenn McConell. The appointee will be involved in a project related to a Cooperative Research Centre (CRC) Bushfire Grant in conjunction with the Country Fire Authority (CFA). Dr McConell is contracted by the CFA to conduct research as part of the CRC Bushfire Grant. The appointee will be responsible for conduction of this research for the CFA under the supervision of Dr McConell.The appointed Postdoctoral fellow will be responsible for the design and implementation of health and fitness testing methodology for the safety of volunteer and career Bushfire fighters. This will include: work and rest issues, energy and nutrition, fitness and work capacity and fatigue factors. The appointee will conduct health and fitness testing for volunteer and career wildland fire fighters, analyse testing results, report on fire fighter safety health and fitness testing and develop health and fitness guidelines for safe fire fighting. The appointee will be responsible for writing 3 monthly reports for the CFA and for maintaining the budget for this consultancy. The appointee will also be responsible for publishing scientific journal articles and reports suitable for distribution to Firefighting authorities.
The successful applicant will be required to co-supervise an honour’s student and/or a PhD student in the area of this Bushfire related research. The Postdoctoral fellow will be expected to be able to conduct largely independent research in collaboration with the Head of the Laboratory and provide advice and assistance to the other research staff and students in the laboratory.
Selection Criteria
Essential
- A PhD, preferably in Exercise physiology
- Experience with conduction of complex human exercise experiments.
- A through understanding of exercise physiology.
- An ability to work very well with people in terms of participant recruitment for human research and ability to retain recruited participants.
- Evidence of independence in the conduct of research.
- Excellent oral and written communication skills

- Ability to maintain accurate records of laboratory activities
- Ability to meet strict guidelines
- Well developed problem solving skills.
- Computer literate in Microsoft Office and statistical software
