The Department of Kinesiology at The University of Texas at Arlington is pleased to announce three openings for graduate assistant positions that start in January, 2005.  There are two Graduate Teaching Assistantships (GTAs) and one Graduate Research Assistantship (GRA) available for those seeking a Master of Science (MS) degree in Physiology of Exercise.  The University of Texas at Arlington is located in the Dallas-Fort Worth Metroplex which is minutes from world-class museums, entertainment facilities, and 10 professional sports venues.  The 400-acre main campus is located in central Arlington.  The Department of Kinesiology occupies a newly constructed 10,000 sq ft laboratory space, entitled the Exercise Science Research Laboratories (ESRL).  Individual ESRL labs include two cardiovascular, metabolic, muscle physiology, body composition, and blood chemistry laboratories.  The MS degree in Physiology of Exercise is a two-year program that offers multiple degree plan options designed to meet the needs of various career paths, including (but not limited to): cardiopulmonary rehabilitation, clinical exercise physiology, athletic training, advanced fitness-related occupations, and research extensive training.

·                    Two Graduate Teaching Assistantships (GTAs) are available, which provide the student a 9-month stipend of $9,000 and in-state tuition rates.  Responsibilities include teaching freshman Exercise Science laboratory and activity classes, in addition to, relevant laboratory experiences.  These experiences may include stress testing and research responsibilities.  To apply, download a Graduate Assistantship application at http://www.uta.edu/coed/kinesiology/ms/assistantship.php.  The application may be emailed to Dr. Sue Beckham, Graduate Advisor (mailto:sueb@...).  The starting date for both positions is January, 2005, with an application deadline of October 15, 2004.  However, the positions will remain open until filled by qualified candidates.  Requirements for admission are outlined on the web site.

·                    One Graduate Research Assistantship (GRA) position is available in the Muscle Physiology Laboratory, which will provide a stipend of $4,500 per academic semester ($9,000 per academic year) and up to $2,000 tuition remission.  The GRA position will be contracted for one semester with the possibility of renewal for subsequent semesters.  To apply, download a Graduate Assistantship application at http://www.uta.edu/coed/kinesiology/ms/assistantship.php.  The application may be emailed to Dr. Joel Cramer (mailto:jcramer@...).  The starting date for this position is January, 2005, with an application deadline of October 15, 2004.  However, the position will remain open until filled by a qualified candidate.

o       The Muscle Physiology Laboratory is located in the Exercise Science Research Laboratories (ESRL) facility on The UTA campus and emphasizes the mentorship of graduate students to independently conduct research studies in the lab, analyze the data, and publish the results.  The Muscle Physiology Laboratory is equipped with a Biodex System 3 isokinetic dynamometer, Biopac MP150 A/D converter for electromyography (EMG), mechanomyography (MMG), and joint position signal acquisition, as well as signal processing software such as LabVIEW 7 and MATLAB.  The duties of this GRA will include assisting in the running and troubleshooting of the lab equipment, computer programming, data processing and analysis, and professional writing.  This GRA will focus on two primary studies: (1) creatine monohydrate supplementation and strength training and (2) the effects of stretching on muscle force production.

o       Qualified applicants must express the ambition and initiative necessary to successfully complete an MS degree in Physiology of Exercise with a strong research emphasis.  The qualifications for this GRA include a BA or BS in Exercise Science, Kinesiology, Biomedical Engineering, or related field.  The candidate must be accepted into The UTA graduate school and the Physiology of Exercise graduate program.  Strong writing skills and experience with Microsoft-based computer applications are necessary (i.e., MS Excel, Word, Outlook, etc.).  Programming skills with LabVIEW, MATLAB, VB, and/or C++ are preferred.
