Treatment of Arthritis
http://www.treatment-of-arthritis.com
Rheumatoid arthritis is an inflammatory autoimmune disorder that
attacks the joints. It can be chronic and affect more than one
system. This means that other parts of your body can be involved.
It can deteriorate and deform joints. Plus it will cause a great
deal of pain and loss of movement. This disease can attack
anybody between 20 and 40 years and can be genetic. It is known
to be 4 times more common in smokers and 3 times more common in
women.
Symptoms: The symptoms are different from other forms of
arthritis. This is because not only single joints are affected
but soft tissue swelling and inflammation of several joints are
simultaneously attacked by this disease. This condition is termed
as polyarthritis. Initially the joints are affected
asymmetrically. The pain is different from other common forms of
arthritis as it will move around, depending on which joints are
being used.
Progression: As the problem progresses the inflammation
associated with it will wear away and destroy the joints. This in
turn will lead to deformity of the joints, making them twist into
unnatural shapes. There are a number of terms used for different
deformities like; Boutonnière deformity, swan neck and “Z thumb
deformities.
Other problems associated with Rheumatoid arthritis: Rheumatoid
arthritis affects many areas of the body and gives rise to other
diseases and problems. One of the most common problems is anemia.
Splenomegaly, enlargement of the spleen, is another complaint
associated with Rheumatoid arthritis. Due to different treatments
and the disease itself fibrosis can sometimes occur in the lungs.
A general feeling of being unwell is often associated with flare
ups of this disease.
Diagnosis: When diagnosing rheumatoid arthritis there are a
number of points to take into consideration:
* Stiffness in the morning that persists longer than one hour:
With other forms of arthritis stiffness will wear off after you
move around for an hour or so.
* Having arthritis and soft tissue swelling in multiple joints:
Other forms of arthritis often affect one joint at a time.
* Hands, and small joints are the most commonly affected
* subcutaneous nodules
* having a rheumatoid factor level above 95
* Radiology results showing joint erosion
If you have 4 or more of these factors it is very likely that you
are suffering from rheumatoid arthritis.
Treatment: Standard treatment of rheumatoid arthritis includes
the use of antirheumatic medicines commonly known as DMARDS.
These drugs will help to give remissions so that the disease is
slowed down and less joint damage occurs. Anti inflammatory
medicines and analgesics are also used to lesson the discomfort
of this devastating disease.

Body Detox Tips
http://www.bodydetoxtips.com/
In today's health conscious world, it has become a necessity
more than a luxury to keep your body in perfect shape and
condition, body detoxification has shown several benefits that
help you do the same. It is a method by which the toxins that
enter out body through various sources are flushed out. Body
detoxification not only helps in improving your health but also
keeps your body in good shape.
Most of us often tend to forget that our skin is among the most
important filters that out body posses. It plays a big role in
releasing and absorbing toxins and can have a major role to play
when it comes to body detoxification process.
In case you are looking for a program that would make you feel
and look younger along with helping you lose the extra weight,
you could consider going for Body detox wrap. This is a process
of extracting those harmful toxins from your body and releasing
them through your skin. Body detox wrap is considered to be one
of the easiest ways of body detoxification.
This process of detoxification is not just about removing the
harmful toxins from your body, it also ensures that the essential
organs of the body that help in blood purification, which also
includes your skin, are functioning properly and are in perfect
shape.
A body detox wrap draws out toxins from within the body through
the skin. A body detox wrap is a great way to remove toxins from
the body through the skin that maybe much harder to remove
through other detoxification processes such as dietary changes or
purges.
Usually, the body detox wrap is about applying mineral rich clay
that generally consists of certain kinds of ash to the skin.
Next, the clay is kept in place with the help of different kinds
of wraps depending on the kind of detoxification process you want
to go through.
It depends on your personal preferences whether you want to go
for full body detox wrap or a specific area at a time. But I
suggest going for specific areas as a full body detox wrap may
have certain side effects. This is because with a full body wrap
you will be losing a large amount of toxins from your body at a
very fast rate.
Opting for body detox wrap can help you use your skin in a
terrific way to lose toxins from your system by pulling them out
directly. This process not only helps in losing harmful toxins
but also in losing additional weight. Usually, the non-processed
toxins are stored in your body fat, which must be removed at the
earliest to avoid further toxin build up. These fats are removed
easier when they do not contain any potential harmful toxins.
So to conclude, in case you are thinking of trying out body detox
wrap then going ahead with it won't be a bad idea. But it is
advisable that you go for partial body detox wrap rather than
full body to avoid any side effects. For more info, visit

organs. Many toxins finds their way into our bodies which can
ultimately lead to several major and minor health problems,
therefore it is always wise to undergo a body detox program once
in a while to cleanse your body from the inside.
There are many body detox programs that you may avail, although
you should always consult your doctor before signing up for a
particular regime. A good body detox program should provide you
with all the positive benefits and advantages without any of the
side effects that usually accompany it. For best results, you
should go for a body detox program that is safe and gentle; such
a program shall provide you with the desired effects without
feeling ill or stripping your body of the essential vitamins and
minerals.
A gentle body detox program takes things slowly and allows your
body to do most of the essential work. Good body detox programs
help boost the natural detoxification system that already exists
in the body. It is very important that you provide your body with
all the necessary nutrients that it requires for proper
detoxification.
Body detox programs should be combined with healthy diets to get
the best results. A good detox diet that contains several
essential minerals and vitamins can help support your body
throughout the healing and rejuvenation process of the detox.
Little changes to your regular diet can help bring about drastic
changes to your health.
Vegetables like cabbage, cauliflower, broccoli, Brussels sprouts
can help support a good body detox program. Also, it is advisable
that you do not over-cook, this way you may destroy the benefits,
and you would be left with nothing. Other food items like whole
grains, pulses, onions etc are also good options.
Another important thing is to include fresh juices and plenty of
water in your diet. Water is very essential to the human body;
drinking lots of water can effectively help flush out the harmful
toxins from your body so, drink up. Massage therapy and proper
rest are also important parts of a good body detox program.
Massage therapy can help you reduce stress and tension giving you
peace of mind, after all a healthy mind leads to a healthy body.
Regular exercise should also be on the body detox program agenda.
Sweating can help reduce toxins lying underneath your skin.
Regular bathing is another way to purify the body, saunas work
especially well. You may also try dry skin brushing. Another
important factor is proper rest and relaxation; both play a
crucial part in the healing process of the body. With the help of
a good body detox program, you can eliminate a large number of
toxins that have accumulated over time.
Make sure to find yourself a good body detox program that suits
your needs and helps you remove all the harmful toxins from your
body. But remember to consult your doctor to make the wisest
choices and prevent any health problems. So, adopt a body detox
program and begin your journey to a lighter, fresher you today!

Body Detox Tips
http://www.bodydetoxtips.com/
A natural body detox can be extremely beneficial for your body
and believe me when I say; your body shall thank you for it. A
natural body detox can effectively help you remove all the
harmful toxins from your body that usually build up with time. If
you have always wanted to go through a natural body detox program
then now is as good a time as ever, although you should know a
few things before you take the leap.
Undergoing a natural body detox shall help your body get back to
a healthy state and you would be able to live a healthy and
active life. But it is very important that you talk to your
doctor before going through with it, this way you would be able
to make the best choices without any health risks. People always
assume that detoxification needs extreme measures but that
couldn't be farther from the truth. For best results, you should
treat your body safely and with care instead of following a harsh
detox program.
There are many benefits that you would receive by undergoing a
natural body detox. You would be more in tune with your body and
you shall feel much more refreshed and energized. However, you
are not to make this a habit, as it is only wise to do it once
every 12 months. Doing a natural body detox more often can
negatively affect your health and strip your body of many
essential vitamins and minerals.
Here in this article we discuss some simple, hassle-free steps
that you should follow for a natural body detox:
Follow a proper diet: Ensure that your diet contains large
amounts of nutrients and protein. Healthy eating habits shall
prepare your body for building better and more healthier blocks.
Exercise regularly: Sweating eliminates toxins underneath your
skin. Exercise can effectively help enhance metabolism and aids
to detoxify your body. But exercise at the same time can increase
toxins as well so it is important to combine it with adequate
liquids and other related detox principles.
Natural herbs: Natural herbs are extremely helpful in cleansing
your vital organs. Fiber supplement cleansing diet can help clean
out your colon. Enemas can effectively be used for cleaning your
liver.
Massage therapy: Massage therapy acts as a support to detox
programs; they help give a relaxed feeling eliminating worries,
stress, and tensions.
Regular bathing: Saunas are a great way to purify your body. You
can also make use of a skin brush to remove toxins just before
heading for the shower.
Proper rest: It is important to rest and relax; it is a very
essential part of the whole rejuvenation process of a natural
body detox. Yoga can prove to be very helpful in purifying both
your body and your mind.
Natural body detox can help you clean your body in the right way,
although remember to do it only once a year. A natural body detox
is the safest way to get rid of all toxins from within your body.
Make sure to follow a healthy lifestyle and refrain from all bad
habits to make your way to a better and healthier life. So try
natural body detox today and find a lighter, cleaner, happier
you.

How to Write a Lead-Generating White Paper for a Medical Device
Copyright (c) 2008 Alec Alpert
http://www.alecalpert.com/
Unlike other products, a medical device presents special
challenges to a white paper writer. For example, writing methods
that effectively sell DVD players are ineffective for selling MRI
machines to hospitals. Why? Because a medical device directly
interacts with human bodies, and therefore gives rise to risks of
injury. Actually, the main concern of medical device
manufacturers is to mitigate the risks to patients or users while
delivering the maximum benefits. All medical device manufacturers
are required to comply with the medical device regulations that
ensure safety and efficacy of devices. Hence, when writing for
the medical technology industry, a writer enters a highly
regulated world where even marketing collateral tends to be
written in an academic style.
This means that to write a successful medical device white paper,
a writer needs not only good writing and marketing skills, but
also a thorough knowledge of engineering and the regulatory
environment. A writer should be able to grasp the complex science
and technology behind the device, and translate them into
persuasive writing without any hype. The paper must appeal to the
logical mind of scientific readers, not so much to their
emotions, which is the opposite of methods used to sell consumer
goods.
A lead generation white paper for a medical device is a hybrid
between an educational essay and a sales brochure. It educates
and gracefully sells at the same time. The writing process starts
with determining the topic, the released device, or the
scientific principles and technology used (or to be used) in the
device.
The next step is to identify the ideal target reader. This is
crucial. The writer must clearly see who the paper's audience
will be. A medical device paper is usually written for a diverse
audience of professors, doctors, medical physicists, scientists,
technologists, hospital administrators and regulatory agencies.
Knowing the audience sets the paper's level of sophistication,
scope, tone, structure and vocabulary.
In the case of a medical device, a white paper usually talks to
two predominant groups. One includes readers with a scientific
mind who are mainly interested in the device's features and an
in-depth analysis of its technology, often at the atomic level.
The other group comprises administrators looking to grasp a
device's business benefits and see how it can save labor, cut
costs and improve regulatory compliance. Hence, a writer is
challenged to strike a balance between discussing a device's
benefits and features. In fact, it is not unusual for a writer to
be pulled in opposite directions by a device's manufacturer;
engineers and scientists want a technical paper, but marketing
managers want a sales document. It's vital to get the balance
right.
So how is a writer to successfully resolve this dilemma? A good
starting point is to prepare an outline of the paper and discuss
and approve it with the manufacturer. The writer, however, should
advise these people that a lead-generating paper needs to focus
on a device's benefits, rather than just its features, or how
great the company is. The outline will establish the paper's
direction, focus and final destination before the writing even
begins.
Once the outline is approved, the next step is to interview
subject matter experts who have an intimate knowledge of the
topic. They are the design engineers, scientists and other
professionals working for the medical device manufacturer. Nobody
knows the device better than the people who designed and made it.
For this reason, a writer must take these interviews seriously
and allocate sufficient time for them. He has to polish his
interviewing skills and prepare for the interviews well in
advance.
Besides interviewing, a writer should also access the relevant
product documentation. The law requires all medical device
manufacturers to maintain a Design History File, which contains
product development documents, such as product specifications,
drawings, validations, operator manuals, and so on. Many
questions also can be answered by simply searching the Internet.
And, of course, a library or bookstore also provides valuable
information.
What is a white paper's structure? It naturally begins with the
title which is a crucial part of the paper. This can make or
break the paper, and must be relevant, compelling, and engaging,
enticing the readers to read further. It should be simple and
focus on the benefits that the device delivers.
Then comes the first page, which sets the stage. The remainder of
the paper evolves from the first paragraphs. The paper can be
only as good as its first page. Readers will continue reading
only if the first page convinces them to do so.
The rest of the paper is divided into manageable sections. As
with any writing, the process is repetitive: writing drafts,
refining, editing, and re-editing many times until the paper is
nearly perfect. The writer must stay focused on appealing to the
target audience, and strike the right balance between the
benefits and features.
Sentences and paragraphs have to be concise, with wide margins
around the page. Bullets and headlines should be used generously,
instead of long passages of uninterrupted text. The paper needs
to be laid out so that a reader can quickly grasp the gist of it
just by scanning the sub-headlines.
The end of a white paper is a call to action, which asks readers
to contact the manufacturer for a meeting, demonstration,
evaluation, analysis, discussion or some sort of next step(s).
A lead generation white paper is typically 5 to 12 pages long,
and mostly comprises text with minimal graphics.

Dietary Supplements Must Be Tested by Scientifically Valid Methods
Copyright (c) 2008 Norm Howe

http://www.vcillc.com
Are you a Dietary Supplement manufacturer trying to figure out
what FDA means by "Scientifically Valid Method"? Here are some
hints.
Under the Dietary Supplement Health and Education Act of 1994
(DSHEA), the dietary supplement manufacturer is responsible for
ensuring that a dietary supplement is safe before it is marketed.
FDA is responsible for taking action. As such, FDA's Department
of Health and Human Services recently rolled out new dietary
supplement regulations. The 815-page document, titled "Current
Good Manufacturing Practice in Manufacturing, Packaging,
Labeling, or Holding Operations for Dietary Supplements",
reflects the final ruling on the subject.
In short, this ruling establishes the good manufacturing practice
for dietary supplements, outlining the minimum standards
necessary for activities related to manufacturing, packaging,
labeling, or holding dietary supplements to ensure the quality of
said dietary supplement.
According to the ruling, testing methods must be scientifically
valid. The ruling proposes that tests must include at least one
of the following: (1) Gross organoleptic analysis, (2)
microscopic analysis, (3) chemical analysis, or (4) other
appropriate test. (The requirement that methods be scientifically
valid applies to all the tests and examinations manufacturers
use, rather than to quantitative tests alone, thus the term
''analytical'' is not used.)
While the proposed definition of ''appropriate test'' (i.e.,
''a scientifically valid method'') mandates specific methods,
some manufacturers are concerned because valid test methods are
not always available for testing dietary ingredients or dietary
supplements.
In response to that concern, the ruling states: ''If an AOAC or
FDA method is not available, a scientifically valid analytical
method is one that is based on scientific data or results
published in, for example, scientific journals, references, text
books, or proprietary research...We recognize that certain tests
for identity, purity, quality, strength, or composition for
certain finished product may not be available due to complex
finished matrices that would make such testing impracticable."
In addition, manufacturers may exempt a product specification
from the verification requirements if they show that: (1) The
specifications selected to verify that the product meets all
product specifications are not able to verify that the control
system is producing a dietary supplement that meets the exempted
product specification and (2) there is no scientifically valid
method for testing or examining the exempted product
specification at the finished batch stage.
Beyond this ruling, FDA's post-marketing responsibilities
include monitoring safety, e.g. voluntary dietary supplement
adverse event reporting, and product information, such as
labeling, claims, package inserts, and accompanying literature.

Gain Weight by Using Your Brain
Copyright (c) 2008 Asger Haug
Bodybuilding Nutrition
http://bodybuilding-nutrition.freakygrowth.com/
If you have problems gaining weight or if you're looking for a
way to gain weight faster, keep reading. In fact it is very
simple and logical to do so. All the processes I'm about to
explain have been very well documented. This is not a diet or a
supplement, it is something you already posses the power over
right now, your brain.
I'm going to discuss:
1. The two branches of your nervous system, their functions and
how you can determine which one is dominant in you. 2. How
creating an imbalance prevents you from getting the results you
want. 3. How you can regain balance to produce the results you
desire.
A quick description of the Automatic Nervous System (ANS)
The model of ANS used in clinics originated from Francis M.
Pottenger, M.D, 1919. The ANS is the master controller of your
metabolism; it controls almost all metabolic processes. The ANS
is divided into two divisions on the basis of anatomic and
physiological grounds. Nerves from both divisions connect the
brain (Hypothalamus) to the organs and glands of the body.
The ANS is like an information transport system with the brain as
its switchboard operator. The two divisions, the parasympathetic
and the sympathetic nervous system work together to regulate all
the activities in the body. To name a few: heart beat, fight or
flight, blood pressure, digestion, elimination, repair and
rebuilding and much more. In this article, we are interested in
the repair and rebuilding activities.
The difference between Parasympathetic and Sympathetic influence
is different from person to person. People are more or less
influenced by one of these. I encourage you to search the web for
a more in depth description of these influences to see where you
fit.
Parasympathetic (rest and digest branch): Digestion, Elimination
(detoxification), repairing, rebuilding, anabolic processes.
People with Parasympathetic dominance tend to be wider build,
procrastinate and have excessive appetite and lethargy.
Sympathetic (survival branch): fight or flight response,
motivation, stress, catabolic processes. People with Sympathetic
dominance tend to be tall, thin, highly motivated, have a low
appetite, and excellent concentration.
The key is to be highly motivated and have excellent
concentration while training (sympathetic dominant) and then be
relaxed and calm in the restitution period (parasympathetic
dominant).
Since the parasympathetic branch is the one that builds and
repairs our body, along with controlling our anabolic processes,
we want that branch to be most active when wanting to gain
weight.
Now what you probably don't know, is that most people in our
stressed and modern world are in a constant condition called
Autonomic Disregulation where our sympathetic and parasympathetic
systems are opposite of what they should be. They are literally
jacked out of direction, disturbing every metabolic process
including our ability to be anabolic. This is where your mind
comes in the picture.
You are, in fact, in charge of whether you want to be
disregulated, or if you want to be regulated. Regulated is where
your body works at 100% efficiency giving you high health and
energy.
When you are stressed, your sympathetic nervous system gets
activated and responds with a release of catabolic hormones which
makes you alert. Cortisol is one of the many, but is the primary
stress hormone. You don't want to be sympathetic when gaining
muscle.
When you elevate your levels of cortisol, your DHEA ratio to
cortisol is disrupted. DHEA-S or DHEA-Sulfite is an anabolic
hormone. It is a tissue repair hormone and is very closely
related to growth hormone, testosterone and all the other
anabolic hormones. So when your cortisol goes up, your DHEA goes
down, damaging your health.
High levels of cortisol in the body have been related to highly
rapid death of brain cells, and rapid ageing. As cortisol levels
go up, it affects the memory and ability to learn .In other
words, it disrupts the neurocognitivity which enables the neurons
to communicate with one another. Look at the patterns of people
who consume caffeinated drinks, sports drinks and coffee, etc.
Caffeine creates a sympathetic catabolic response in your nervous
system, where glycogen (sugar) is released from your liver, along
with cortisol (which makes you feel fresh and alert). Cortisol is
a catabolic anti-inflammatory hormone that breaks down muscle
tissue and feeds it to the body. Since the high release of
glycogen in your body also triggers a release of insulin, your
blood sugar crashes, and it crashes with you. It also affects the
quality of your sleep and mood because it interferes with
anabolic repair cycles.
If you're waking up in the morning after 7 hours of sleep still
tired (not feeling fresh) you are probably not entering deep
sleep, because cortisol also disrupts your ability to enter the
restorative phases of sleep - REM (Rapid eye movement) Cortisol
disrupts your ability to repair your nervous system, and it
disrupts your ability for the immune system to do its job. One of
the most important changes you can make is to not consume any
caffeinated substances after 3pm, because depending on the rate
on which your liver is able to detoxify caffeine, it may disrupt
your hormonal levels. This will interfere with your ability to
sleep and therefore, interrupt your anabolic repair cycles such
as DHEA-S. Most physical repair happens between 10pm, 2am, don't
workout and go to bed at 1am. Most psychogenic repair (nervous
system repair) happens between 2am, 6am.
Another thing to consider is to avoid full spectrum lighting in
the hours before sleep. Light stimulates the pineal gland which
stimulates the RAS (Reticular Activation System) which, turns you
on, again. As cortisol levels drops during the day, melatonin
increases. Melatonin is the hormone that puts you to sleep and
makes you tired. So when you come home with full spectrum
lighting in your house, it jacks up your cortisol levels again,
interfering with your sleep and repair cycles.
Consider what happens when you come home late at night and have
coffee with your full spectrum lighting. Guess what, your body's
hormonal cycle is totally confused, ramped and ragged, you sleep
poorly and you are not repairing. Next morning you feel awfully
tired and like many people do, you drink another cup of coffee!
Be smart. If you're reading this it means you are smarter than
most people. So live up to it. We need to be parasympathetic
while we sleep. Bear in mind, that just because you are not a fan
of caffeine, it does not mean that you're safe. A high level of
stress elevates cortisol just as effective as caffeine.
This discussion gets more technical so take a look at the picture
here while reading:
http://www.freakygrowth.com/images/chem-process.gif
Your anabolic hormones are mainly produced from Pregnenolone.
When your stress levels are high, your sleep is poor, your
exercise habits are wrong and you consume the wrong metabolic
stimulators (stuff that stimulate a sympathetic response), your
body overproduces cortisol and cortisone. Since both your
anabolic hormones and your stress hormones are produced from
Pregnenolone, which production do you think the body takes away
Pregnenolone from in order to compensate for the overproduction
of catabolic hormones? It steals the Pregnenolone which should
have been used to create testosterone, Androstenediol,
Aldosterone among other anabolic hormones. This syndrome called
"Pregnenolone steal" or "Cortisol Escape" will steal 60% of
your Pregnenolone to compensate for the overproduction of
cortisol (or stress in your life), which will mean 60% less
anabolic hormones in your body. That's a tough fact.
If you want to gain weight and gain muscle, you must be more
parasympathetic than sympathetic. It is really that simple. So
take some time of for yourself, relax, get to bed before 10pm,
stay away from metabolic stimulators (such as caffeine), avoid
full spectrum light before bed hours and give it all you've got
when training.

How to Survive 'Acid Reflux Rebound'
Copyright (c) 2007-2008 Wind Publishing
Written by: Charles Stewart Richey
Reflux Gone Forever
http://www.refluxgoneforever.com
There are many people who suffer from acid reflux and want to get
off the proton pump inhibitor drugs (PPI drugs). The main action
of this group of pharmaceuticals is the long acting reduction of
gastric acid production. These include Prevacid, Prilosec, Nexium
and Protonix.
These drugs are convenient to use and can be initially useful,
but many find that the side effects outweigh the benefits. When
it comes to quitting them, one will find that it is not so easy.
PPI drugs are supposed to be used for a restricted period of
time, however most patients continue their use indefinitely. Not
only do patients abuse these drugs, but also the physicians who
prescribe them. Unfortunately, there are no studies regarding the
effects of the long term use of these drugs. One has to question
whether the prolonged use of PPI drugs is really safe.
We do know that by reducing the production of stomach acid, the
proper digestion and assimilation of food is restricted. Are
chronic users of these drugs suffering from a form of
malnutrition? It is important to keep in mind that stomach acid
also keeps potentially dangerous intestinal bacteria in check. So
what may seem to be acid reflux utopia, in reality may be acid
reflux hell.
When one stops these drugs, after prolonged use, the acid pumps
turn on again and come back with a vengeance producing more acid
than they did before. This is referred to as "acid reflux
rebound". This is often such a terrible and frightening
experience that most people become quickly discouraged and
immediately get back on the drugs. This "catch 22" situation has
proven to be a virtual gold mine for the pharmaceutical
companies, who make billions of dollars in profits each year.
It is a horrible position to be in. You know you want to quite
these drugs. They stop working and you are instructed to double
the dose. You make an effort to stop, but it all backfires on
you. Your throat burns like its on fire and your doctor tells you
that if you don't take the drugs you may develop esophageal
cancer. Who wouldn't be frightened?
Now for the good news; there are nonpharmaceutical things that
one can do to survive "acid reflux rebound" and get back on the
right track.
At this point there is most likely damage to the esophagus. One
cannot hope to improve until the esophagus is well again. In
order to heal the esophageal damage, there are a few things to be
considered. First and foremost one must temporarily change their
diet. By now everyone should be aware of what foods and beverages
trigger their acid reflux. Replace these offending foods with
mild, easy to digest foods.
Instead of a slice of pizza with acidic tomato sauce, have a
salad. Substitute that morning cup of coffee with a cup of tea.
Have a glass of white instead of red wine with dinner. It's just
a matter of common sense, but these changes are necessary during
the acid reflux recovery period.
In order to defeat the acid reflux syndrome, one must attempt to
become as alkaline as possible. Anything which has an acidic
effect on the body should be eliminated. Smoking is perhaps the
most acidic thing one can do. Eating too much at one time causes
an over production of stomach acid. Aerobic exercise actually
causes the body to become more alkaline in nature.
Drinking copious amounts of clean fresh water will help flush out
the acidic toxins which accumulate in the body. A body which is
properly hydrated is rarely acidic in nature. A glass of water
after a meal is a good idea, but drinking much of anything with
meals is counter productive. This dilutes the digestive fluids,
causing the stomach to produce more acid.
Believe it or not, chewing gum between meals is beneficial.
Chewing produces saliva which is very alkaline. Chewing gum after
meals puts more alkalinity in the stomach to counteract the over
production of acid.
There are many natural ingredients found in grocery and health
food stores, which can help during the acid reflux recovery
period. Herbs, such as marshmallow and slippery elm have
wonderful healing properties. Licorice, natural honey and aloe
vera juice can sooth the esophageal lining and assist in the
healing process.
There are very few cases of acid reflux which can't be
successfully treated if one understands what causes this
condition. Simple things like eating slowly and chewing food
thoroughly, in a pleasant relaxed atmosphere, can reduce ones
chances of having acid reflux.
We do not have to be prisoners of this drug oriented "acid reflux
rebound" effect. It is unfortunate that most doctors rely on
pharmaceuticals as the only solution to the acid reflux
condition.
With a little education regarding the causes of acid reflux and
the knowledge of natural medicine, one can survive "acid reflux
rebound" and go on to live a normal life. We are at the brink of
a new era where the patient must sometimes also be the healer.

Acid Reflux Recovery - Simple and Easy!

REFLUX GONE FOREVER, Natural Acid Reflux Remedies
http://www.refluxgoneforever.com
Acid reflux is a condition that plagues millions of people
worldwide. It is caused by stomach acid splashing up into the
esophagus. The lower esophageal sphincter (LES) is a ring-like
valve at the bottom of the esophagus. It opens to allow food to
enter the stomach and then closes to keep it there. When the LES
becomes damaged and, or relaxed, stomach fluids are refluxed up
into the esophagus and throat. The hydrochloric acid in this
fluid has been compared to the corrosive acid in a common car
battery.
It is important to remember why this condition usually exists in
the first place. In most cases it is due to a damaged esophagus
and LES. These can easily be scratched by eating foods with
jagged edges like corn chips or crackers. Even crusty bread
which has not been chewed properly can cause this type of damage.
These little lacerations can then be irritated by acidic foods
which are spicy or fried. Before you know it, you have a full
fledged case of acid reflux. Once this cycle begins, it is not
that easy to stop.
Let the esophagus heal by not eating the same foods in the same
manner that caused the damage in the first place. Losing
weight, exercising, chewing properly, drinking sufficient amounts
of water and eating in a pleasant atmosphere are all simple
things that anyone can do to improve this condition.
There are also many natural ingredients found in any grocery
market or health food store, which can help during the acid
reflux recovery period. Herbs, like slippery elm and marshmallow
have wonderful healing properties. Aloe vera juice, licorice and
natural honey can sooth the esophagus and assist in the healing
process.
By eating dinner at least three hours before retiring, one can
drastically reduce the chances of acid reflux. Chewing gum
between meals actually reduces stomach acid. Saliva is extremely
alkaline in nature and chewing stimulates its production causing
the system to be more alkaline.
Eat smaller, more frequent meals. Forget the "Three Big Meals"
we have been taught to indulge in. Try eating four or five
little meals each day. Start the day with Kukicha Twig tea
instead of acidic coffee. This tea has been used for hundreds of
years to make the body more alkaline. For breakfast, banish that
cereal and instead eat fruit, like bananas and melons. Have
several snacks of walnuts, almonds and more fruit during the day.
For lunch have a salad, made with grilled chicken breasts, or
tofu, mixed with hearts of romaine tossed with a little lemon
juice and olive oil. Lemon juice is preferable to vinegar, as it
is more alkaline in nature.
During this reflux recovery period, eating anything which could
irritate or damage the esophagus must be avoided. Until the
lacerations have had a chance to heal, spicy foods, such as
acidic tomato products, hot peppers, raw garlic and raw onions
should be eliminated from the diet. They just further irritate
the condition. Eating chocolate, smoking and drinking alcohol
relax the LES, allowing stomach acid to splash up into the
esophagus, thus impeding the healing process.
The key to acid reflux recovery is to eat only mild, easy to
digest food until the esophagus has healed. Eat early and
slowly, chewing your food completely. Last, but not least, try
to eat in a relaxed, pleasant and stress free environment.
There are many things one can do to improve the chances for
success in defeating acid reflux. The choices in behavior that
we make like exercising, losing weight, wearing loose clothing,
eating and chewing properly and avoiding carbonated drinks are
all very important. There is still another very potent technique
for managing this condition. It is called meditation.
Meditation has the power to eliminate any unpleasant side affect
of our stressful lives, including acid reflux. Try this out; in
a quiet place, sit erect with your hands at your side and take a
long deep breath. Close your eyes and look up toward the space
between the eyebrows, without straining. Continue to breathe
deeply. You will soon find yourself in a very relaxed state with
no particular thoughts in mind. Now visualize yourself eating
beautiful food slowly and carefully. See your mouth, throat,
esophagus, LES and stomach all pink, young and perfect. Feel all
the parts of your body working in complete harmony. Look at
yourself. You are smiling. You are enjoying perfect health.
I promise you that if you did this exercise at least once a day,
your acid reflux would go into remission. With these little
changes in food choices and lifestyle and a few natural
supplements thrown into the mix, anyone can accomplish acid
reflux recovery.

Body RE-Engineering
http://www.losefatandgainmuscle.com
A question most often asked by those who are just getting started
in bodybuilding, especially those who are teenagers, is which
supplements are best for gaining weight quickly and for bulking
up. Assuming that all of the rules that are presented in my
Weight Gain And Bulking Up Rules For The Natural Bodybuilder
article, are being followed, then the supplements presented below
will be of great help to those who are looking to gain weight and
bulk up as quickly as possible.
1. Weight Gainers
Weight gainers are protein shakes whose protein source consists
mainly of whey proteins (mostly concentrate with some isolate as
well). Some also include other proteins such as milk proteins
and/or egg. These products have a high carbohydrate content;
typically in the form of maltodextrin (a high glycemic complex
carb) and fructose (simple sugar originating from fruits). For
gaining weight they are very useful since they help you get in
the amount of quality calories required to gain quality muscle.
2. Spectrum Flaxseed Oil
Flaxseed oil is a polyunsaturated oil that is high in the Omega 3
essential fatty acids (EFAs); one of the two essential fats that
the body needs. "Essential" means that the body cannot produce it
on its own and therefore must be obtained from diet. The other
kind of EFAs the body needs are the Omega-6 oils. Flax oil is
high on the Omega 3, which help improve immune system, energy
production, insulin sensitivity, and hormonal production. In
addition, 1 TBSP of Flax Oil adds 120 calories, which are useful
for weight gain.
3. Multi Vitamins and Minerals Pak
Essential to insure that our body will operate at maximum
efficiency. Why? Because on a very simplistic level, without
vitamins and minerals it would be impossible to covert the food
that we eat into hormones, tissues and energy. Vitamins enhance
the actions of proteins that cause chemical reactions such as
muscle building, fat burning and energy production. Minerals
assure your brain receives the correct signals from the body,
balance of fluids, muscular contractions and energy production as
well as for the building of muscle and bones.
4. Creatine
Creatine is a metabolite produced in the body composed of three
amino acids: l-methionine, l-arginine and l-glycine. Once it
reaches the muscles, it is converted into phosphocreatine
(creatine phosphate), which is then used to regenerate the
muscles' ultimate energy source, ATP (adenosine triphosphate)
thus allowing for more repetitions at any given weight. Also,
creatine increases lean body mass by pushing water inside the
muscle cell and enlarging it. Best of all, these effects can be
seen in as little as two weeks!
5. Glutamine
L-Glutamine the most abundant amino acid in muscle cells. It is
released from the muscle during times of stress (such as hard
weight training workouts) and dieting. This amino acid not only
has been shown to be a great anti-catabolic agent (protects the
muscle from the catabolic activities of the hormone cortisol),
and to have immune system enhancing properties, but it also
speeds up recuperation and helps to increase muscle volume.
6. Liver Tablets
These tablets are a great source of beef liver and bodybuilders
have been using them for decades in order to obtain the values
offered by beef proteins. The key thing for liver tablets to be
useful is that they need to be manufactured with the highest
grade of beef liver and they also need to be purified from the
fat, cholesterol and other impurities that are contained in the
liver. I like Beverly International's Ultra 40 because they
contain the highest grade of beef liver and have been purified
and processed to contain forty-five times the nutritional amount
of whole beef liver.
7. Testosterone Boosting Supplements
These are the type of supplements that you can take if you plan
to compete, if you have the budget to try them, and only if you
are older than 25 when the hormonal production begins to decline.
Teenagers, in my opinion, should stay away from any supplement
that has an effect on hormonal levels as there is no need to
upset a teens delicate hormonal balance. Besides, teenagers
produce approximately the equivalent of a 300 mg shot of
testosterone per week anyway so there is no need to attempt to
increase the production of testosterone in a system that is
already producing at peak levels.

Eat Tons of Superfoods to Aid in Your Natural Body Detox

Body Detox Tips
http://www.bodydetoxtips.com
There is a lot of hype surrounding superfoods. Should you use
them in your diet? Of course! But what are they and how can
they help your body detox program?
Superfoods are foods you may or may not eat everyday that are
packed full of nutrients, vitamins and minerals that are said
will make you healthy, happy and strong. While many people
think of vegetables when they hear the term superfoods, some
fruits and even dark chocolate fall in this category. Adding
them to your daily diet is definitely a recipe for success.
Learn more about some of the best you can use during your full
body detox.
Vegetable superfoods include many of the green leafy kind as well
as ones you can find in capsule form. Spirulina and chlorella
are two of these. These superfoods will help stabilize your
blood sugar levels throughout the day. They also contain GLA, an
omega-3 fatty acid.
The other great thing about chlorella and spirulina is that they
contain tons of protein. They actually have 12 times the protein
of beef, and contain all the B vitamins, including B12, Vitamin
C, E and major minerals. People call them a less expensive way
to get your protein. They are definitely an awesome way to
improve your health even without a natural body detox.
Blueberries are full of antioxidants and phytoflavinoids. They
contain a lot of vitamin C and potassium. In addition to
lowering your risk of cancer and heart disease, they also are an
anti-inflammatory. Anyone following a good body detox program
will want to include these in their diet. A rule of thumb to
follow with berries is the darker their color, the higher in
antioxidants they are.
Want to lower your risk for heart disease, ease your arthritis,
and possibly avoid memory loss and Alzheimer's disease? Eat
fish rich in omega-3 fatty acids. Stick to cold-water fish,
though, as warmer fish have higher levels of mercury. A few to
try are wild salmon, herring and mackerel.
Fiber helps you feel full longer, maintain weight and keep your
bowels regular, which is an important part of an natural body
detox. In addition, studies show that those who eat fiber as a
part of their normal diet have more stable blood sugar levels.
All important benefits with life-long effects.
Soy is a great cholesterol fighter to have in your corner. It is
found that you can lower your total cholesterol as much as
statins by ingesting soy. Statins are currently one of the most
widely prescribed medicines used to lower cholesterol.
Tea is known for having plenty of antioxidants but green tea has
been found to have ECGC, another opponent of cholesterol.
There are lots of foods in this category. Any good home body
detox will have quite a comprehensive list. Include one or many
of these food in your body detox diet and you are well on your
way to a happy, healthier you.

There are many myths and misconceptions floating around. People
unknowingly spread false information because they've heard
others saying the same thing. It does get confusing because
sometimes the so called experts are the ones spreading these
untruths.Fat is bad.Carbs are the enemy. Be afraid. Be very
afraid! Oh shut up! Here are some myths that science has cleared
up.
Fats aren't good for you Says who? We all need fat. Fat is
needed to absorb nutrients and maintain cell quality. It is when
you eat excessive amounts that you get in trouble. Excessive
eating of fatty foods can lead to heart disease and weight gain.
The key is to eat less foods that contain "bad fats" (trans
fats and saturated) like cheeseburgers and butter. And start
eating more "good fats" (monounsaturated and polyunsaturated)
like fish, nuts and olive oil.
Sugar causes diabetes Ask the average person and they'll say
that sugar causes diabetes. Nope! Sorry. Thanks for playing
though. We have some nice parting gifts for you... If you have
the disease you need to watch your sugar and carbohydrates
intake. But if you don't have diabetes, you won't get it from
eating sugar. The main risk factors for diabetes are a high
caloric diet, being over weight and not being physically active.
That's how you can get it.
Brown eggs are better for you than white eggs The color of the
egg has nothing to do with it's nutritional quality. Some breeds
of hen lay white eggs while others lay brown. Case closed!
Brown sugar is better than white sugar If your sugar is refined -
my suggestion is don't eat it. "Refined" is a manufacturing
process where they strip it of all it's nutrients. Brown/white
doesn't matter. They're both bad for you. Replace refined sugar
with raw cane or beet sugar, pure honey or molasses.
You need a low-carb diet to lose weight Ok I'll make this as
simple as possible. To gain weight you must eat more calories than
what is needed to maintain your weight. The excess calories will
be stored as fat. So if weight is maintained with 2000 calories,
if you ate 2500 calories, you will gain weight. If you want to
lose weight you must eat less calories than what is needed to
maintain your weight. So if weight is maintained with 2000
calories, then eating 1500 will reduce your weight.
People on those diets lose weight because it has less calories.
Losing or gaining weight is about calories (food and physical
activity) not carbs. Next! Red meat is bad for you Really? Ya
think so? Like most things, too much is a bad thing. But I would
never suggest cutting it out of your diet altogether( unless your
doctor says so).
Choose lean cuts of meat like top sirloin or eye of round. Switch
it up with some fish sometimes. Cut the skin off of poultry,
because that is high in fat. Other nutrition myths are:
Skipping meals can help you lose weight: nope Eating before you
sleep causes weight gain: nope Preservatives are bad for you: Not
all. But some can be Canned/frozen fruits and vegetables aren't
as nutritious: Depends. But not always
Fitness myths
No pain No gain
Wow, is your trainer a masochist or something? That seems kinda
harsh. You shouldn't be feeling serious pain when you work out.
If so, slow it down and relax. In order to build muscles you need
to push yourself harder than normal. But discomfort is different
from mind-numbing pain. If you're working/exercising too hard
-stop immediately. Get treatment if pains persist.
Drinking water when you exercise gives you cramps. You need water
when you work out. If you sweat, you need to replace what you
lost. Drinking water when exercising is what you should be doing.
If you don't you can experience dizziness, headaches or cramps.
So drink up. Exercising requires a lot of time Just walking 30
minutes a day would greatly reduce your risk for heart disease
and obesity. That is not a lot.
If you're too busy to take an active approach about your health,
then don't complain when you feel the results. Your body
doesn't fail you until you fail your body. There are many many
more myths out there. Some people make their money off of false
and misleading information. And some just believe what they've
been told without questioning it. Don't believe everything you
read or hear. Check the facts out for yourself.

REFLUX GONE FOREVER, Natural Acid Reflux Remedies
http://www.refluxgoneforever.com
Many people suffer daily from the effects of acid reflux, to one
degree or another. Unfortunately, the constant strain of this
condition on the body can lead to premature aging.
The reflux of stomach gas and fluids during the night, even on a
modest level, inhibit proper sleep patterns. It is a known fact
that sleep is the most important factor affecting the aging
process. If you do not get enough quality sleep at the r.e.m.
level, you face each day with low energy, which can be described
as a form of chronic fatigue. This syndrome will eventually drag
you down and make you feel and look older than you should. It
may even shorten your life. Many people are not even aware that
they suffer from this condition.
Acid reflux or gerd (gastroesophageal reflux disease) occurs when
the LES (lower esophageal sphincter) relaxes and allows gas and
fluids from the stomach to move upward into the esophagus. The
LES is a ringed muscle at the bottom of the esophagus. It opens
in order to allow food to enter the stomach, and then closes in
order to keep the digestive fluids where they belong. It is when
this muscle is too relaxed or damaged, that the contents of the
stomach can escape up into the esophagus thereby causing acid
reflux.
The medical community would have us to believe that drugs are the
only answer to the problem of gerd. Of course this is not true.
Antacids are, at best, a temporary fix and are loaded with
harmful ingredients such as sodium and aluminum. PPI drugs
(proton pump inhibitors) like Nexium and Prilosec should only be
used for eight weeks, at most. It says so right on the label.
Furthermore, these drugs only mask and hide the symptoms and they
have hundreds of harmful side effects.
The acid reflux condition can be the result of poor eating habits
or even the aging process itself. We all know that certain foods
can trigger indigestion; tomato sauce, raw garlic and onions,
chocolate, coffee and alcohol. The ingestion of these foods can
make you acidic in nature, resulting in acid reflux. Yet most of
us can't resist one or more of these items on a daily basis.
Besides eliminating "trigger" foods from our diets, there are
many natural herbs and supplements that can be helpful in staving
off this malady.
Chronic indigestion can also be caused by a lack of hydrochloric
acid. Some people produce insufficient amounts of stomach acid
as they grow older. Besides the proper digestion of food,
hydrochloric acid is necessary to keep harmful bacteria, which
are found in the digestive track, in check. Without this
defense, infections can develop which make the acid reflux
condition even worse. This particular condition can be improved
with hydrochloric acid supplements, or even ingesting small
amounts of apple cider vinegar. Although these conditions are
different in nature, they both cause acid reflux and can result
in premature aging.
Other things that should be considered in dealing with this
condition are:
* Smoking cessation (Smoking creates an acidic body)
* Loosing weight
* Eating small portions of food throughout the day
* Chewing food well and eating slowly
* Eating at least three hours before retiring
There are many subtle changes in lifestyle which can remove the
threat of the acid reflux condition. By eliminating this
unnecessary and harmful strain on the body, one can live a more
healthy life. Getting better quality sleep will increase your
chances of retaining life-force, which means living a longer and
more youthful existence.

http://www.2gohealth.com/
Everyone has heard about the importance of a balanced diet for
maintaining good health. Similarly, everyone knows that they
should be getting exercise - or at the very least adding more
activity into their days. Getting a good night's sleep is
essential - without it, you'll find that your immune system
starts to slack off a bit and you put yourself at a greater risk
for catching a cold or coming down with the flu.
We all know what we should be doing, but let's be honest: very
few of us eat a balanced diet all of the time. Many of us make
the choice to take the elevator rather than the stairs and we try
to find a parking place that's as close as possible to our
destination rather than taking the opportunity to walk a little
further. We also tend to let stress, work, social gatherings and
more interfere with the amount of sleep that we're able to get
each night.
When we don't go the extra mile to take care of ourselves, and
when our immune systems start to falter because of it, we may not
feel it right away. Soon, sluggishness starts creeping in. This
sluggishness not only slows us down, it also ages us
prematurely.
Fortunately, there's something that we can do in order to
maintain our young living. We can maintain our youth simply by
adding antioxidants to our diet.
What are antioxidants? The simplest answer is that antioxidants
are the vitamins and minerals found in foods that serve to fight
off disease. The more complex answer is that antioxidants like
Vitamin C, Vitamin E, selenium, Vitamin A that are found in
fruits and vegetables. By making an effort to add antioxidants to
our diet, we can keep our young living going; we can keep
ourselves healthier longer.
Antioxidants are, in effect, sponges that soak up the free
radicals in our systems. By fighting the free radicals in our
bodies - free radicals that are the result of less healthy foods
that we eat, alcohol that we drink and smoke that we're exposed
to (whether we smoke cigarettes ourselves or are exposed to
second hand smoke from friends, family members who smoke,
neighbors in our apartment buildings or co-workers at the office)
- by adding more fruits and vegetables to our diet and by adding
young living essential oils, we are better able to maintain our
good health and reduce the risk of developing some cancers and
even heart disease and stroke.
Young living oils take the essential oils from lemons and oranges
and combine them with Ningxia wolfberries, juices from
blueberries and pomegranate, along with other nutrient sources.
Those who add antioxidants in this way will find that they:
* have increased energy; that they have regained a sense of
young living that doesn't come from caffeine or other stimulants
that effect you for a short while and then wear off leaving you
to crash even harder, feeling more tired than you had before,
and,
* help you to protect your body from the effects of a weakened
immune system that comes from a lack of adequate self care.
However, increased energy and a sense of better health aren't
the only reasons why young living oils are beneficial to your
body. The other reason is that the antioxidants serve to help
your body to work more effectively. From boosting your immune
function to helping your liver to better filter out toxins, from
improving your cardiovascular function to maintaining the health
of your eyes, you'll find that antioxidants along with you
living oils just help you to feel better.
While you may not always be able to make the time to eat balanced
meals, you may not always be able to make time for a run or for
time at the gym, you'll find that increasing the antioxidants in
your body with young living oils doesn't take much time but
still offers many of the same benefits. You'll also find that,
because the energy rush young living essential oils is all
natural and without stimulants, not only won't you crash out but
also your sleep cycle is less likely to be disrupted.
Are these essential oils the magic bullet to good health? Not
necessarily, but that doesn't mean they aren't the key to young
living.

What Nutritional Supplements Should I Use?
When it comes to gaining lean muscle mass, most people think that
bodybuilding supplements are the most important part of the
equation. However, this could not be any further from the truth.
Supplements are just additions to an already good nutrition and
training program. Nutrition and training are the most important
components of a bodybuilding program, with rest and recovery next
to them. Once all of those aspects of your program are maximized,
then you can start thinking of adding supplements to your
program.
Please understand that supplements do not make up for improper
training, or lack thereof, or a low quality diet. Supplements
only work when your diet and your training program are optimal.
Why Use Supplements?
Nutritional supplements are good because they prevent us from
getting any nutritional deficiencies. The increased activity
levels from your new exercise program will make your body have
greater demands for vitamins and minerals, which will increase
the probability of you suffering a deficiency without
supplementation. Even a slight nutrient deficiency can sabotage
muscle growth. Can't we get all the nutrients we need from food
alone? We cannot rely solely on food nowadays to provide us with
all the vitamins and minerals that our body needs because the
processing of foods before they get to the supermarket, cooking,
air, and even light have already robbed your foods of most of the
vitamins that they have to offer. If you are deficient in one or
more nutrients your body may not be able to build muscle and burn
fat properly.
Not all supplements are created equal though. Some your body
always needs, others are more dependent upon what your goals are
and what your budget looks like. Below you will learn what the
different categories of supplements are and which ones you need
to use at all times:
Basic Supplements
These are the supplements that you always need year round in
order to gain muscle. If you have a limited budget, these are the
only ones that you need to concern yourself with.
Multiple Vitamin And Mineral Formula
Essential to insure that your body will operate at maximum
efficiency. Why? Because on a very simplistic level, without
vitamins and minerals it is impossible to covert the food that we
eat into hormones, tissues and energy.
Vitamins
Vitamins are organic compounds (produced by both animals and
vegetables) whose function is to enhance the actions of proteins
that cause chemical reactions such as muscle building, fat
burning and energy production. There are two types of vitamins:
Fat soluble vitamins - they get stored in fat and therefore if
taken in excessive amounts will become toxic such as A, D, E, and
K. Water soluble vitamins - they are not stored in the body such
as the B-Complex and Vitamin C.
Minerals
Minerals are inorganic compounds (not produced by either animals
or vegetables). Their main function is to assure that your brain
receives the correct signals from the body, balance of fluids,
muscular contractions and energy production as well as for the
building of muscle and bones. There are two types of minerals:
Bulk minerals - Which are called this way as the body needs them
in great quantities in the order of grams such as Calcium,
magnesium, potassium, sodium and phosphorus.
Trace minerals -Which are needed by the body in minute amounts,
usually in the order of micrograms such as chromium, copper,
cobalt, silicon, selenium, iron and zinc.
Where Can You Get Vitamins and Minerals From?
I like simplicity and because of that I tend to get most of my
vitamins and minerals from multiple vitamin/mineral packs. The
ones I personally use are the Prolab's Training Paks, which are
loaded with potent levels of essential nutrients and bioactive
compounds.
You have to be very careful with what type of vitamin and mineral
formulas you choose as some don't always contain what the labels
claim (thanks to unscrupulous manufacturers) and some come from
such poor sources that they are not absorbed very well by the
body. Other Reputable Companies On The Market That I Have Used
Include: Twinlabs, EAS, Weider, Labrada, Shiff, Optimum
Nutrition, Advanced Nutrition, Higher Power Nutrition, and
Champion Nutrition
Protein Supplements
Because of hectic schedules it is impossible to eat the six
perfectly balanced meals that are required to get in shape a day.
Therefore, these supplements can be used as "fast food". They
are easy to prepare (if it is a protein bar then no preparation
is required) and most of the formulas that are available on the
market today pay close attention to taste. Having said that,
there are many categories of protein supplements. Before we cover
the different categories of protein supplements and how to use
them, let's talk about the different sources of protein found in
these supplements.
Types of Protein Sources
There are many sources of protein from which protein powders or
bars are made of. Protein quality is measured by Biological Value
(BV). BV is a value that measures how well the body can absorb
and utilize a protein. The higher the Biological Value of the
protein you use, the more nitrogen your body can absorb, use, and
retain. As a result, proteins with the highest BV promote the
most lean muscle gains. Whey protein has the highest BV value,
rating at 104. Egg protein is only second to whey rating as a 100
with milk proteins being a close third rating as 91. Beef rates
as an 80 with soy proteins a distant 74. Bean proteins, due to
the fact that are plant-based proteins, only rate a 49.
Now that we have discussed BV values, let's discuss each protein
source in more detail.
Whey Proteins (Whey Concentrate/Whey Isolate) I feel that whey
protein is a great protein source for the following reasons shown
in a growing number of studies:
1) It improves sports performance because it reduces stress and
lowers cortisol levels (hormone that destroys muscle).
2) Improved immunity by increasing glutathione (GSH), which is a
water soluble antioxidant found in the body.
3) Improved liver function in some forms of hepatitis.
4) Reduces blood pressure.
5) Can help fight HIV.
6) Helps reduce overtraining (which is linked also to low levels
of GSH).
In addition to the above, whey proteins are highly digestible and
have a better amino acid profile even than egg whites. So in
other words, whey protein has the highest biological value (value
that measures how well the body can absorb and utilize a protein)
of any protein.
Having said this, whey is not the steroid-like substance that
many advertisers would like you to believe, but based on current
research, it can be a valuable addition to one's diet for the
reasons outlined above.
Also, all whey is not created equal. The whey that will give you
the benefits described above has to be micro-filtered. Otherwise,
it is just the garbage left after pasteurizing milk.
Micro-filtration than has to be done at very low temperatures in
order to allow for the production of high protein contents with
no undenatured protein, minimum fat, minimum cholesterol and
minimum lactose.
ii) Isolates & Concentrates
In addition, there are whey isolates and whey concentrates. Whey
isolates are sub-fractions of whey that are absorbed much more
rapidly into the system. This is a good thing for post workout
nutrition as at this time the body is in dire need of amino
acids. However, whey isolate makes a poor choice for during the
day supplementation as if the body does not have a need for all
of the amino acids that are released into the bloodstream, then
it will use them for energy production as opposed to muscle
building.
Also, it is important to mention that whey isolate does not have
many of the health enhancing properties that are described above,
as the expensive process required to produce whey isolate
destroys many of the health/immune system enhancing sub-fractions
such as the lactoferrins, beta-lactoglobulins, and
immuno-globulins.
Therefore, for during the day use, a product consisting mainly of
whey concentrate is your best bet while for after the workout, a
whey isolate product would be a better choice.
iii) Egg Protein
Egg protein is a super bio-available protein second only to whey,
as previously discussed. It is a slower released protein than
whey, which makes it perfect for throughout the day use. One
thing that I like to do is mix some egg and whey protein for the
most bio-available protein shake in the planet!
iv) Milk Proteins (Calcium Casseinate/Miscellar Casein)
Milk proteins, just like egg proteins, are a highly bio-available
protein source (slightly less BV than egg) that is slowly
released into the blood stream.
Calcium Casseinate is the regular protein that is found in
regular milk and other dairy products. Miscellar casein is the
natural, undenatured form of casein found in milk. It is
separated from milk by means of ultrafiltration, without the use
of chemicals, which increases the amount of bioactive milk
peptides that support immune function as well as enhance muscle
growth.
A property of micellar casein is that it may have the ability to
provide a steady release of amino acids into the blood stream,
which makes it an excellent choice for a long lasting
anti-catabolic (muscle protecting) protein.
v) Beef Proteins
Beef proteins are slow released proteins that rate an 80 on the
BV scale.
While I don't know of any protein supplement in powder on the
market that is made from beef proteins, there are beef liver
tablets out there that do provide the benefits from beef
proteins. Beef proteins are abundant in blood building iron and
also on B-vitamins, all factors that contribute to better
nutrient utilization and energy production.
vi) Soy Proteins
Soy has been shown to exhibit positive health benefits for both
men and women. Studies have shown they may reduce the risk of
hormone-dependent cancers (breast, prostate, etc), and other
cancers as well. Soy's primary health benefits include reducing
high cholesterol and easing the symptoms of menopause (due to the
fact that it contains estrogen like substances called
phyto-estrogens). Soy has also been shown to help with
osteoporosis by building up bone mass. Because of this, I like to
recommend 1 serving of soy protein per day for women but only for
its health benefits.
However, in the muscle building department, I don't feel that
soy is very useful, especially for men. First of all, its BV
value is a distant 49, and second of all, since it has estrogen
like substances, it could potentially reduce the utilization of
testosterone through the binding of phyto-estrogens to the
testosterone receptors.
II) Types Of Protein Supplements
Now that we have covered the main proteins present in protein
supplements, lets discuss the different types of protein
supplements on the market.
i) Weight Gainers
Weight gainers are protein shakes whose protein source consists
mainly of whey proteins (mostly concentrate with some isolate as
well). Some also include other proteins such as milk proteins
and/or egg. These products are characterized by their extremely
high carbohydrate content; typically in the form of maltodextrin
(a high glycemic complex carb) and fructose (simple sugar
originating from fruits).
Weight gainers were very popular back in the 90s but their
popularity has died mainly because most people do not have the
fast metabolism of a hardgainer; so as a result, a high
carbohydrate diet applied on a person with over 10% body fat
typically leads mostly to fat gains instead of muscle mass gains.
For hardgainers however, and bodybuilders who are below 10% body
fat, these products be very useful for getting in the amount of
quality calories required to gain quality muscle.
They are best when used for the mid-morning, mid-afternoon and
post workout meals as the carbohydrate content is of a fast
released nature. They can be mixed with fruit juice or skim milk,
and in order to increase the calorie content the use of flaxseed
oil and fruits is invaluable.
My favorite weight gainers on the market are:
* Prolab's N-Large II (the most popular one on the market)
* Beverly International's Mass Maker
* Twinlab's Gainers Fuel 2500
* Champion Nutrition's Heavyweight Gainer 900
* Weider's Mega Mass 4000
* Clark Bartram's X-Treme Size
* EAS Mass Factor
This is not a comprehensive list by any means, but rather a list
of the products that I know are good. The fact that a product is
not on this list does not mean that it is not a good one.
ii) Meal Replacement Powders (MRPs)
These powders are lower in calories due to the fact that they
have way less carbohydrates than weight gainers. They were
created after the realization that most of the population does
not have a weight gain problem and therefore the weight gainers
on the market were of little use to them.
Protein-wise, most are composed of whey proteins but there are
many new formulas now on the market that consist of a protein
blend of whey and milk proteins. Typically, the carbohydrate
component used to be maltodextrin, yielding around 25-27 grams of
carbohydrate per serving, but the newer generation formulas
consist of slower released carbohydrates like brown rice and oats
in order to make the product lower glycemic in nature.
While these products are too low in calories for most
Hardgainers, they can use these as long as they add other
ingredients such as fruit, skim milk and essential fats in order
to increase the caloric base.
My favorite MRP on the market, by far, is Prolab's Lean Mass
Complex, as it is instantized (you can mix with liquid and a
spoon), and has a unique cinnamon oatmeal flavor. In addition it
contains essential fats, a slow released carbohydrate matrix and
a protein blend of whey proteins and miscellar casein. Other good
products I like are are:
* Beverly International's Ultra Size
* Champion Nutrition's Ultramet (the vanilla flavor is
excellent)
* EAS' Myoplex (though it is very hard to mix)
* Labrada's Lean Body
Any of these products can be used throughout the day in between
meals or after the workout.
iii) Protein Powders
Protein powders are just powders that consist mainly of protein
(typically whey protein is what is sold these days but you can
also find blends). Typically, they contain no more than 5 grams
of carbohydrates per scoop and 20-25 grams of protein (per
scoop). Calorie wise they consist of anywhere from 100-125
calories.
Good sources of these powders are:
* Prolab's Pure Whey (available now also in Cinnamon Oatmeal
flavor)
* EAS MyoPro (chocolate being my favorite flavor)
* Next Nutrition Designer Protein
* IronTek's Essential Protein
The powders just mentioned are mainly whey protein concentrate.
The best isolates in the market are:
* Natures Best Zero Carb Isopure
* Prolab's Isolate
My favorite blends in the market of whey proteins with slower
released proteins are:
* Beverly International's Muscle Provider (whey and egg blend)
* Prolab's Protein Component (also available in my favorite
Cinnamon Oatmeal flavor)
I love protein supplements because of the many uses that they
have. For instance in the morning I like to have oatmeal with
Cinnamon flavored protein powder. One can also use them to add
more protein to either a meal replacement powder or a weight
gainer. Alternatively, one can also use them for creating a
home-made weight gain formula.
So now, which protein product should you choose? If trying to
gain weight then a weight gainer for sure. If you are looking to
have a full meal consisting of carbs, proteins and some fats then
an MRP is your best bet. If on a budget then the best way to go
is to buy a 5-lb tub of protein powder.
iv) Protein Bars
These are bars made out of any of the protein sources listed
above. The carbohydrate mix is usually a combination of glycerin
(which is not really a carbohydrate but a sugar alcohol) and
sugars. They are low in calories compared to a weight gain shake
and typically contain less than desirable fats. If trying to lose
fat, then limit their use to once per day at the most.
If doing a competition then I would not touch them. The ones I
like most in the market today are:
* Premiere 1 Odyssey Bars
* Labrada's Lean Body Bars
* Met Rx Protein Plus Food Bars
* Worldwide Pure Protein Bars
* EAS' Myoplex Deluxe Bars
v) Beef Liver Tablets
These tablets are a great source of beef liver and bodybuilders
have been using them for decades in order to obtain the values
offered by beef proteins. The key thing for liver tablets to be
useful is that they need to be manufactured with the highest
grade of beef liver and they also need to be purified from the
fat, cholesterol and other impurities that are contained in the
liver.
When it comes to beef liver tablets the best ones in the market,
in my opinion, are Beverly International's Ultra 40 because they
contain the highest grade of beef liver and have been purified
and processed to contain forty-five times the nutritional amount
of whole beef liver.
The way to use them is to add 3-4 tablets per meal. Each tablet
adds an additional 2 grams of protein from beef liver to your
meals.
C) Essential Fatty Acids
Essential fatty acids, Alpha Linoleic Acid (Omega-3s) and
Linoleic Acid (Omega-6s), are fats that need to be consumed
through one's diet as the body cannot manufacture them. They are
most important as they are involved in several key body functions
such as energy production, fat burning, brain and nerve tissue
development, mood regulation, insulin metabolism, hemoglobin
production, etc. In addition, these fats have some interesting
properties such as anti-inflammatory properties, anti-lipolitic
properties (prevention of extra calories being stored as fat),
reduction in allergies, and immune system strengthening.
Where Can You Get EFA's From?
Having said that, where can one find EFA's? Salmon and flax
seeds are high on the Omega-3s.
If you do not consume any of these items, then either flax seed
oil, flax seed oil capsules or fish oil capsules would be a good
idea to add to your supplements program. Omega-6 fats typically
do not need to be supplemented as they are easily found in
poultry, eggs and whole-grain breads. Typically, one's diet is
abundant on the Omega-6 but lacking on the Omega-3's.
My favorite EFA product is manufactured by a company called Pride
Nutrition which has a blend called Premium EFA. In addition to
Essential Fats, this blend also has CLA (conjugated linoleic
acid) and GLA (gamma linolenic acid). These two fatty acids are
showing very promising studies for weight loss and joint
lubrication.
What's great about this product is the fact that they added the
Lipase enzyme, which helps with the absorption and digestion of
the fats. This product is the only one I have ever tried where
you do not end up burping the oil a few minutes after you take
the capsules.
Other good products are Serrano Labs Alpha Omega-3s, which is
also an excellent product. For CLA only capsules I like Prolab's
Enhanced CLA which also has some flaxseed oil in order to provide
some Omega 3's.
D) Vitamin C
Vitamin C is a water-soluble vitamin that improves your immune
system and helps you recover faster from your workouts by
suppressing the amount of cortisol (hormone that kills muscle and
aids in the accumulation of fat) that is released by your body
during a workout.
Vitamin C is the only Vitamin that I recommend to be taken in
mega doses quantities. Remember that since it is a water-soluble
vitamin, it will not get stored by the body. Research shows that
if taken an hour before a workout (1000mg dose) it significantly
reduces muscle soreness and speeds recovery after a workout.
I recommend a total of 3000 mg per day of Vitamin C. If your
multiple vitamin pack already has 1000 mg, and you take this in
the morning, then all you need is an extra 1000 mg at lunch and
1000 mg at dinner.
A good Vitamin C that comes in 1000 mg capsules at a super
awesome price (250 caps at $10.49) are produced by Higher Power
Nutrition.
E) Chromium Picolinate
Chromium Picolinate is a mineral that may enhance the effects of
insulin, the hormone that pushes amino acids (protein) and
carbohydrates into the muscle cell. As we have previously
discussed, insulin is one of the most anabolic hormones in the
body; it determines if the food that you eat is going to be used
for muscle production, energy production or fat production. When
insulin is secreted in moderate levels, it aids in muscle and
energy production. In excessive levels it only promotes fat
storage. Chromium Picolinate may upgrade insulin's capability to
produce muscle and energy by making the cells in the body more
prone towards accepting this hormone (in other words, enhancing
insulin sensitivity). In doing so, it may help you to gain muscle
and lose fat faster as insulin will now be able to deliver the
desired nutrients to the muscle cell.
Chromium may also keep blood sugar levels stable, thereby
preventing insulin levels from going high enough to begin
promoting fat storage. Again, chromium only works if we follow a
proper diet. Also, while it is not the magic bullet that it was
claimed to be for building muscle back in the early 90's I still
feel that it is useful for ensuring that our insulin sensitivity
is at its peak.
Sources
Again, I like Higher Power's Chromium Picolinate due to the
quality and awesome price. Quantity: 200 mcg with the post
workout meal and with breakfast on days off.
Supplement Recommendations Summary
Essential To Take
* MultiVitamin/Mineral Complex taken with breakfast.
* Chromium Picolinate: 200 mcg at breakfast or post workout.
* Essential Oils, at least 14 grams per every 100lbs of
bodyweight.
* 1 gram Vitamin C taken with breakfast, lunch and dinner.
* Weight Gain, Whey Protein Powder or Meal Replacement Powder
for mixing with skim milk, or water, in order to make protein
shakes. (Needs vary depending on diet).

Which Exercises Are The Best
Copyright (c) 2008 Hugo A Rivera
Body RE-Engineering
http://www.losefatandgainmuscle.com
In weight training, there is a variety of exercises that one can
choose from to sculpt the body of your dreams. Results in
bodybuilding or body sculpting are generally measured in body
composition changes; increased muscle mass or tone, depending on
the goal, along with decreases in body fat. The speed at which
such changes are acquired depends on the training protocol used,
the nutrition plan followed and the amount of rest (good night
sleep) that the trainee gets.
In order for a training protocol to work at peak efficiency, not
only must it be periodized or cycled but it also must include
exercises that give you the most stimulation in the minimum
amount of time.
Different exercises provide different levels of stimulation.
Exercises like the leg extensions, while excellent for sculpting
the lower part of the quadriceps, produce less of a stimulating
effect than an exercise like the squat. The efficacy of an
exercise really depends on the exercise's ability to involve the
maximum amount of muscle fibers and also on its ability to
provide a neuromuscular stimulation (NMS).
Neuromuscular stimulation is of crucial importance as it is the
nervous system that ultimately sends a signal to the brain
requesting to start the muscle growth process. Having said that,
how do we determine what the stimulation factor of each exercise
is? Such will be the topic of the next section.
The NMS Classes
In order to rate what the NMS of each exercise is, I borrowed the
Class rating system used for classifying the speed of DSL systems
(technology used to achieve high speed connections to the
Internet through your phone line) and tailored it to fit my
purpose. In this system a Class 1 technology has lower speeds
than a Class 2 technology.
Therefore, in our exercise rating system composed of four
classes, a Class 1 exercise yields the lowest NMS (this class is
composed of variable resistance machine type of exercises) while
a Class 4 exercise yields the highest NMS and is therefore the
hardest but most stimulating one. In each class we may also have
subclasses such as Class 1a and Class 1b. A Class 1a exercise
will yield less NMS than a Class 1b.
Class 1a
Class 1a exercises are composed of isolation (one joint)
exercises performed in variable resistance machines (such as
Nautilus) where the whole movement of the exercise is controlled.
These type of exercises provide the least amount of stimulation
as stabilizer muscles do not need to get involved since the
machine takes care of the stabilization process. An example of
such an exercise would be the machine curl.
Class 1b
Class 1b exercises are compound (multi-joint) movements performed
in a variable resistance machine. An example of such movement
would be the incline bench press performed in a Hammer Strength
machine. Since the movement is a compound one, more muscles get
involved and therefore the neuromuscular stimulation is higher
than that offered by a machine curl for instance. However, the
fact that the machine takes care of the stabilization issues
limits the growth offered by the exercise.
Class 2a
Class 2a exercises are composed of isolation (one joint)
exercises performed with non-variable resistance machines. An
example of such exercise would be the leg extension exercise
performed in one of those leg extensions attachments that come
with the benches that are sold for home gyms. These attachments
lack the pulleys and the cams that would make the exercise a
variable resistance exercise. Therefore, the muscles need to get
more involved in the movement, something that as a result
provides better stimulation.
Class 2b
Class 2b exercises are composed of basic (multi-joint) exercises
performed with non-variable resistance machines. An example of
such would be the bench press unit that is attached to the
Universal type of machines or a leg press machine that contains
no pulleys or cams that would make the exercise easier. Since
there are no pulleys or cams to make the exercise easier as you
lift the weight, the NMS is higher.
Class 3a
Class 3a exercises are isolation (one joint) exercises performed
with free weights. An example of such exercise would be a
concentration curl performed with a dumbbell. It is still not
very clear whether a multi joint exercise performed on a machine
offers the same amount or better NMS than the one offered by a
free weight isolation exercise. However, for the purposes of this
discussion, we will assume that the free weight isolation
exercise provides more stimulation as stabilizer muscles come
into play (especially if you do the exercise standing up).
Class 3b
Class 3b exercises, as you probably guessed by now, are multi
jointed basic exercises performed with barbell free weights.
Class 3c
Class 3c exercises are multi jointed basic exercises performed
with dumbbell free weights. The barbell exercises provide less
NMS as the movement is more restrained as opposed to dumbbells
where the weights can go in all types of directions unless all of
your stabilizer muscles jump in and constrain the movement.
Because of this, dumbbells provide the highest NMS in this
category.
Class 4
Finally, Class 4 exercises, the king of exercises, are free
weight exercises where your body moves through space. In other
words, any exercise where your torso is the one moving, such as
squats, deadlifts, pull-ups, close grip chins, pushups, lunges,
and dips, will provide the most stimulation possible and
therefore, the fastest results. Haven't you seen at the gym how
many people do great amounts of weights in a pulldown machine but
have trouble doing pull-ups?
The reason for this is that in order for you to perform these
type of exercises you need to be capable of not only carrying the
added resistance but also involving your bodyweight as well.
Therefore, many muscles are called into play in order to perform
this feat. If you look at it, by performing dips, chinups, squats
and deadlifts you are really hitting every single muscle in your
body! These exercises not only give you fast results, but they
also create functional strength; in other words strength that can
be used for your daily activities.
If you are great at performing pull-ups and you go to perform a
pulldown you'll see how easy the task of performing a pulldown
is. As a matter of fact, depending on your pull-up strength, you
might be able to lift the whole stack in most pulldown machines.
However, the reverse in not true. While you may be very good at
performing pulldowns you may not be able to perform many pull-ups
as the strength gained in the pulldown exercise is not as
transferable as the one gained in a pull-up. Again, the reason
for this phenomenon is NMS.
Conclusion
Now that you know what exercises are the ones that give you the
most bang for your buck, then my recommendations are the
following:
If you follow very low volume routines (3-7 sets per bodyparts),
please choose only exercises in the Class 3b, 3c and 4 region.
If you follow a medium volume type of routine (8-13 sets per
bodypart), stick mostly to Class 3b, 3c and 4 type of exercises
but for those bodyparts where you perform 12 or 13 sets, you may
want to incorporate 2 or 3 sets at either the beginning or at the
end of the workout from one of the lower classes. This is
especially true for legs in which a leg extension movement at the
beginning of the workout is a great tool for pre-exhausting the
quads or at the end of the workout serves as a great finishing
movement.
For high volume routines (14-20 sets per bodypart) you can get
away with having 1/3 of your routine composed of lower class
(Classes 3a and below) exercises.
Remember, convincing your body to grow and develop muscle is not
an easy task. However it becomes an impossible one if you choose
exercises that do not provide a significant NMS effect.
Therefore, always choose exercises from the higher classes in
order to show your body that you mean business.

Are you careful about what you eat? Do you make sure that you're
drinking milk for the calcium and vitamins A and D? Do you take
the time to make sure that you're eating enough fruits and
vegetables? Do you eat fish and other lean proteins because you
know that they're supposed to be good for you? Do you take a
vitamin supplement daily?
We are told that these are things that are supposed to be good
for us. We hear that milk is good for us and that it can help us
to lose weight - something that cuts the risk of diabetes, heart
disease and other illnesses. Fruits and vegetables provide us
with fiber, fluids, vitamins and minerals. Fish is high in Omega
3 fatty acids, which are good for heart health and can help our
bodies to better absorb vitamins and minerals. Vitamin
supplements are designed so that we are able to get those
vitamins and minerals into our system - to make up for those that
we don't get in the foods that we eat.
While all of these things are true - fruits and vegetables are
good for us, as are milk and fish; vitamin supplements can help
us to add things that are missing to our diet - so is the fact
that, with many of the foods that we eat, we ingest more than
just the things that are good for us. We also consume toxins.
We're all aware that alcoholic beverages, cigarettes and
processed foods that are full of preservatives and trans fats are
unhealthy for us. However, many of us are less aware of the ways
in which even healthy foods can get in the way of young living -
keeping our energy levels up and our bodies healthy.
Don't believe it? Let's start with milk - as well as products
like yogurt and cheese that are made with milk. Many of us have
sensitivities to lactose, the sugar found in milk. Lactose isn't
the only problem with milk however. Because many farmers give
their animals growth hormones, the milk that we drink also
contains these substances. Similarly, fruits and vegetables come
from farms that often use pesticides, substances that are
designed to keep animals and insects away from the crops that
don't always wash away with water when we rinse off our foods.
Think that fish is safe? Yes, lean protein is good for us,
however it's been found that many fish - including tuna -
contain high levels of mercury. Mercury is a toxin that can
affect the ways that we think and feel, causing anxiety and
depression. Mercury also can cause headaches, dental problems,
irregular heartbeats, weakness, fatigue and even excessive
sweating. Vitamin supplements may not always be much better: the
vitamins and minerals that they contain are not always included
in the right balance, and, depending on your diet, you may find
that you take in more of a certain vitamin or mineral than is
healthy for your body, causing a vitamin toxicity.
This toxicity gets in the way of young living. It leaves us
feeling sluggish. It gives us headaches, stomach discomfort, and
can even release free radicals in your body. Over time, these
free radicals work to break down our cell walls, creating a risk
of developing cancers, heart disease, stroke and other health
problems. In order to combat these free radicals, our bodies need
antioxidants like those found in young living essential oils.
Essential oils are derived from fruits and other sources and
contain antioxidants like vitamins C and E. Young living oils
also contain minerals and fruit juices - along with essential
oils - that make it so that taking the supplement is a good
experience. Not only is it easy to include young living essential
oil in your daily routine, but it's also something that won't
leave a nasty taste in your mouth.
Instead, you'll find that young living oils can be taken in with
a great tasting drink. You'll notice that your energy levels
improve - without the same crash and burn that comes from energy
drinks (which contain not only stimulants like caffeine, but also
sugar which has its own toxicity within the body). You'll also
know that you feel better: your immune system will function
better and you'll catch fewer colds; in general you'll feel
less sluggish.
That's not to say that young living oils will take the place of
eating a balanced diet. Despite the toxins that can be found in
our food, it's still necessary to eat balanced meals. It's just
to say that young living essential oils are a great addition to
your diet once you are making an effort to take better care of
yourself.
---------------------------------------------------------------------
Cheryll Rice writes about healthy living. Health practitioners
have realized over the years that not everything we put into
our bodies comes out of our bodies, and as a result, our
health is at risk of the toxins that are left behind.

overall health, visit: http://www.2gohealth.com

The ancient Romans knew a thing or two about spas. While
Alberta's Aboriginal peoples were discovering the healing
benefits of mountain hot springs, Roman warriors halfway across
the planet were plunging into mineral hot springs to heal battle
wounds. The Roman population soon caught on-in fact, the word
"spa" comes from the Latin "salus per aquam," or "health through
water."
You'll think of Rome when you visit Calgary's Spa Europa. This
luxurious day spa features the statues, pillars and marble that
evoke the ancient Mediterranean-and its Turkish Hammam Treatment
offers a modern twist on the Byzantine and Roman empires. "In
ancient Greece, bathing would be a ritual," says co-owner Laura
Ezekiel. "Now, bath is 'in and out' - it's not a ritual any
more. Our Turkish hammam, however - our signature treatment - is
a ritual."
At 3.5 hours, the treatment includes head-to-toe exfoliations,
aromatherapy steam sessions, hot and cold hydro treatments,
Swedish massage, cucumber mini-facial and a full body milk
rinse-along with a hair shampoo and condition, and scalp massage.
And, to keep up your energy levels, there's an elegant lunch,
too. "It does everything," says Ezekiel. "It refreshes and
purifies mind, body and soul."
When In Rome
The Romans transported their love of baths throughout their
far-reaching empire-a legacy that the crowned heads of Europe
made their own. Mountain spa resorts, with views as good for the
soul as the treatments were for the body, became especially
popular in the 1700s and 1800s.
Today, that legacy flourishes at the Willow Stream Spa in the
Fairmont Banff Springs resort-just 90 minutes from Calgary, and
tucked into its own stunning alpine valley. Sarvar Thermal
Crystals, distilled direct from Hungary's Sarvar springs and
containing such ingredients as potassium, magnesium and iodine,
turn the pool at the heart of the Willow Stream into a truly
therapeutic soak.
"The Hungarian mineral pool is the traditional spa," explains Pam
Ouellet, assistant spa director. "It has the healing waters that
assist in relieving sore muscles and aching joints, promoting
circulation, and detoxifying and re-mineralizing the body." She
suggests that spa guests also spend time in the nearby hot, warm
and cool plunge pools, with their cascading waterfalls (all of
which look out onto magnificent Mount Rundle.)
The Willow Stream taps into another European tradition in its
thalassotherapy treatments, which literally mean "from the
ocean." Ouellet explains that-from the Mediterranean to the Dead
Sea-the sea contains minerals, trace elements and vitamins that
are indispensable to our lives.
The Willow Stream's Thalasso KUR treatment, she notes, uses
sea-borne ingredients that nourish, rejuvenate and detoxify the
body, starting with a re-mineralizing algae body wrap, continuing
with a sea salt bath, and finishing with a marine firming cream.
Your body will thank you.
Asian Fusion
In the mountain resort town of Lake Louise, 30 minutes from
Banff, the Post Hotel's Temple Mountain Spa evokes a European
feel, with its beautiful dark woods, slate and glass tiles-but
its unique new signature treatment takes you to Thailand, says
spa director Anne Witzaney.
The Thai Herbal Stem Massage uses herbs such as ginger, cumin and
plai (from the ginger family), wrapped in unbleached cotton,
steam heated, and then used in a kneading and rolling movement as
part of a traditional Thai massage. "It's a wonderful experience
because of the aroma," she says. "It helps release toxins and
improves circulation, and is combined with deep pressure to
release blocked energy, and increase awareness and vitality." And
while the aromatherapy might take you to Asia, she notes, you
still wake up in the Rocky Mountains, surrounded by peaks,
glaciers and lakes-making it an ideal Alberta spa vacation
destination.
There's more of Asia at the Eveline Charles day spas in Calgary
and Edmonton, with their Indo-Chine Fusion. The Coco-Nilla body
scrub combines coconut milk and crushed vanilla beans, followed
by a tropical mist Vichy shower, Javanese floral bath, and shea
butter body wrap, plus massage. Can you say "aaaaah"?
Journey Europa
You can wrap yourself in Europe in Kananaskis, 1.5 hours west of
Calgary, where the Delta Lodge's Summit Spa body wraps use the
best of European ingredients. Need a Rocky Mountain spa weekend
to recover from your week? Try blissing out to a blend of French
and English lavender, or detoxifying with a combination of creamy
spa mud and Italian mineral salt thermal waters. Need some
stimulation? How about pure marine algae from Brittany, with a
slenderizing and firming effect?

Eat Right and Boost your Immune System

Go ahead and add boosting your immune system to your ever-growing
list of reasons why you should eat right. Long or not the reality
is, who has time to eat right?
You know it's important to eat right, but you just don't have
any time left over at the end of the day to give good eating much
thought. But remember 'You are what you eat' so if you're
feeling like a jelly donut right now then perhaps it's time you
start making changes to your diet. And here's another reason why
you should'
You immune system deserves it!
When you consider all that your immune system is responsible for,
it's more important than ever to give it the tools it needs to
do its job right. The immune system is your body's first line of
defense against foreign invaders, but you don't need to arm it
with swords or guns. All your immune system needs is some good
old vitamins and minerals; the kind you can find right in your
neighborhood grocery store.
Whether you get these important vitamins and minerals naturally
from the foods you eat or you get them by taking nutritional
supplements doesn't matter much at this stage. You've got to do
whatever is easier to get those nutrients into your body so they
can start running your immune system, and the rest of your body,
more efficiently. Ideally it's better to eat right rather than
to rely on supplements, especially since there's always the risk
of over-supplementation (ingesting too much of a vitamin or
mineral), but that's the topic for a different article.
What to feed your immune system
You're probably wondering which vitamins and minerals your
immune system needs most. At the top of the list is Vitamin C.
Not only is it an important immune system-boosting vitamin, it's
also a powerful antioxidant. Your body needs antioxidants to help
neutralize free radicals which is the most effective way to
control the cell damage that free radicals can cause. Like rust
on the body of your car, your body can suffer irreversible damage
from the oxidizing effects of free radicals. A lifetime of
unchecked free radicals can weaken the immune system and that in
turn can compound the effects of aging.
Vitamin C is abundant in oranges and other citrus fruit and it's
also found in brightly colored fruits and vegetables such as
tomatoes, papaya, red pepper, strawberries and spinach. It helps
the immune system produce more white blood cells (the cells that
help fight infection) and beneficial antibodies such as
interferon, a cell coating that helps cells keep viruses out.
Getting more Vitamin C into your system won't prevent you from
developing a cold or the flu, but it can help lessen the severity
of the symptoms and it can help you recover more quickly.
Vitamin E is another antioxidant that helps the immune system
boost its reserves of 'killer cells,' those naturally-occurring
cells that seek out and destroy cancer cells and germs. The body
also needs Vitamin E to produce the immune system antibodies that
destroy bacteria. Studies are ongoing to determine whether the
boost that Vitamin E gives the immune system can also help slow
or even reverse the aging process. Nuts, seeds and grains are
rich sources of Vitamin E and so are vegetable, corn, sunflower,
canola, soybean, olive and palm oils.
The mineral Zinc is also very beneficial to your body's immune
system. Zinc ramps up the production of infection-fighting white
blood cells and T-cells, and the system's natural killer cells
that help fight germs. Besides helping to increase production,
Zinc enhances the fighting capabilities of these cells. Oysters
are one of the best sources of zinc.
Carotenoids, bioflavonoids, garlic, selenium and omega-3 fatty
acids are some other nutrients that help boost the effectiveness
of your immune system. And so is the herbal supplement
Immunitril(tm). This revolutionary complex is a unique
combination of herbs, extracts, minerals, and anti-oxidant
vitamins providing maximum support for immune system function.
To see how others express their experience using Immunitril(tm)
search for Immunitril(tm) at www.Amazon.com and
www.BODeStore.com.
Once you learn more about the many ways these nutrients
positively impact your immune system, you'll wonder why you
didn't start eating better a long time ago!
