I posted the video to YouTube. Its here:
Congratulations to Back Street Boys: Chris, Jackson, Zac and Garrett for
finishing the race with the Turkey on the skate board despite equipment
malfunction just sort of the finish line. Unfortuately the interview of two of
them after the race showing the broken wheel was not recorded. I take the blame
as the camera operator error. Lots of footage with the Satellite High drummers
in the background.
Cheers

I made a GPS track of the Suntree Turkeytrot 10K.
http://maps.google.com/maps/ms?ie=UTF8&hl=en&t=h&msa=0&msid=11229606530029131933\
4.0004794ab042535dd3255&ll=28.215323,-80.681405&spn=0.021177,0.037894&z=15

The GPS shows 6.01 miles. GPS tends to round off the corners so it reads short,
although I don't think it would be that short. It was a 2 loop course. At the
U-turn on the south end it reads about 40 meters short for each turn based on my
split times just before and after the turn. There is also a U-turn at the north
end and several 90 degree turns that typically read 10 meters short.

The course was the same as last year except that they had separate turns for the
5K and 10K to compensate for the fact that you don't go all the way to the 5K
finish before starting lap 2, so it wasn't as short as last year.

Felix Hottenstein, who was visiting from Tennessee for the weekend, won the race
in 39:58. I was second with the same time. (I would expect to run maybe 41:30 to
42 minutes on an accurate course). Molly Fahey was first woman and 3rd overall
in 40:22. Nobody else ran under 42 minutes. (Sean Black ran 43 something. Maybe
he is tapering for the marathon like I should be doing). There were about 75
runners in the 10K and 500 in the 5K. Winning times in the 5K were 17:02 and
19:26. Sorry I don't have all the names. Results should be posted to
http://www.suntreeturkeytrot.org/ but aren't posted yet.

There were no overall awards, just top 3 in each age group. Felix and I were
both in the 41-54 age group so I got second. He is 41. I am 54. This is an
improvement from last year when they went 1 deep in the 25-54 group and I would
have gotten nothing. That's what I was expecting, so it was a pleasant surprise.

Well, I guess I still should have tried harder. With 1/4 mile to go Felix opened
a gap of about 20 feet, and I closed it to within a step at the finish line. We
ran together for most of the race with Molly leading by a second or two for the
first 4 miles. It was quite a shock at the 3 mile where the 10K runners turn
south and the 5K runners go straight to find the 3 of us in a group and nobody
ahead of us. Suddenly it became a tactical race. Until that point there were
about 10 runners ahead of us in the 5K. Both races started together.

The weather was perfect for a fast run: 60 F, 100% humidity and overcast. It had
just stopped raining after I had bicycled 15 miles to the race in a drizzle.

I made a couple of Google maps of the Chain of Lakes 5K and Lightfest 5K courses
from a GPS I carried during the races. You can find both linked from the race
results at http://mattmahoney. net/scr/

I also made a map of the Ancient Oaks 100 course, which is a 3.495 mile trail
loop (repeated 29 times) at the Enchanted Forest. I linked it from last year's
results (12/13/08) although I recorded the track on Saturday. This year's race
might use a shorter loop with more repeats.

A GPS tends to round off the corners so the courses appear to be a bit shorter
on the map than they really are.

The race was at 6 PM Sunday at Wickham Park in Melbourne as the last bit of
twilight faded. There were 440 runners treated to a huge display of Christmas
lights on a 2 1/2 loop course on the main, paved road around the park. TooJay's
had a dinner afterward with sandwiches, pasta, and various salads and desserts.

I got a good view of the girls race as 6 of them, all age 14-18, passed me all
at once in a pack just after the first mile (6:15). It was very tactical. By the
second mile, the slower girls started dropping off until there were only 2 left.
Sarah Day, 14, won in 19:57 beating Kaili Corcoran, 17, by less than a second.

A lot of people complained about slow times. I'm not sure if it was the weather
(74 F, dewpoint 70 F), or not being able to see where you were stepping.

Chain of Lakes 5K results are posted to http://mattmahoney.net/scr/09col.pdf

The race was held at 8 AM today in Titusville at Chain of Lakes park. The course
is about 80% paved bike path and 20% on grass and dirt trails on a 2 lap course
around the lakes, crossing two bridges. We had good weather, 70 F, dewpoint 66
F. Marty Winkel directed the race. There were 228 finishers.

As usual my age group was very competitive. I would not have won an age group
award except that they had both a masters category (Art Anderson) and
grandmasters (Brian Kessler), both in 50-54, moving everyone else up 2 spots.
This race is part of the Titusville racing series with $1700 in prize money
divided among the top 13 men and 13 women using an age graded scoring system.

That's an interesting study but it doesn't prove cause and effect. Like they
said, they need to do a followup study to see if taking vitamin D supplements
helps better than taking a placebo. You may remember similar studies with
vitamins A and E where they found that people who had higher levels of the
vitamin were healthier and lived longer. But when they gave people supplements
or placebos and they didn't know which they were getting, the effect
disappeared.

In the case of A and E, it was likely that the people with higher levels of the
vitamins were eating healthier diets overall (more vegetables and nuts, less
meat) and probably had other lifestyle differences associated with healthier
diets, such as exercise. The vitamin D study doesn't control for these effects
either. Vitamin D comes mainly from sunlight. People who have higher levels of
vitamin D probably spend more time outdoors, and usually people go outdoors to
run, walk, or ride a bike.

Heart disease, stroke, heart failure, and premature death all linked to
insufficient vitamin D levels

The
results of a study presented on November 16, 2009 at the American Heart
Association' s Scientific Conference in Orlando, Florida, confirmed a
strong association between the presence of reduced vitamin D levels and
a greater risk of coronary artery disease, stroke, heart failure and
dying over follow-up in men and women 50 years of age and older.
Brent
Muhlestein, MD and his colleagues at Intermountain Medical Center in
Salt Lake City followed 27,686 subjects with no history of heart
disease for an average of 1.2 years. Serum 25-hydroxyvitamin D levels
obtained during routine clinical care were classified as normal at over
30 nanograms per milliliter (ng/mL), low at between 15 to 30 ng/mL or
very low at less than 15 ng/mL.
Over
the follow-up period, 2,614 participants developed coronary artery
disease, 1,742 developed heart failure, 314 experienced a stroke and
1,193 deaths occurred. Those with very low vitamin D levels were 45
percent likelier to develop heart disease, twice as likely to develop
heart failure, 78 percent more likely to experience a stroke, and 77
percent likelier to die than those with normal levels. Subjects whose
vitamin D levels were classified as "low" as opposed to "very low" also
had greater risks of these conditions, however, the increase compared
to those with normal levels was not as great as the very low group.
"This
was a unique study because the association between Vitamin D deficiency
and cardiovascular disease has not been well-established, " commented Dr
Muhlestein, who is the director of cardiovascular research of
Intermountain Medical Center's Heart Institute. "Its conclusions about
how we can prevent disease and provide treatment may ultimately help us
save more lives."
"Utah's
population gave us a unique pool of patients whose health histories are
different than patients in previous studies," he remarked. "For
example, because of Utah's low use of tobacco and alcohol, we were able
to narrow the focus of the study to the effects of vitamin D on the
cardiovascular system."
"We
concluded that among patients 50 years of age or older, even a moderate
deficiency of Vitamin D levels was associated with developing coronary
artery disease, heart failure, stroke, and death," noted coauthor Heidi
May, PhD, MS, who is an epidemiologist with the Intermountain Medical
Center research team. "This is important because vitamin D deficiency
is easily treated. If increasing levels of vitamin D can decrease some
risk associated with these cardiovascular diseases, it could have a
significant public health impact. When you consider that cardiovascular
disease is the leading cause of death in America, you understand how
this research can help improve the length and quality of people's
lives."
"We
believe the findings are important enough to now justify randomized
treatment trials of supplementation in patients with Vitamin D
deficiency to determine for sure whether it can reduce the risk of
heart disease," Dr Muhlestein added.

To screw up a race one can be forgiven - but no excuses after that ---

Is there anyone out there that remembers the infamous "Merrit Square " disaster
Oct 18th 1980. It was supposed to be a 10k but was something over 8 miles.
Started at 11:00 on one of the hottest days of the year. No cups for water then
no water. Bodies laying all over the road. Mile markers and turn markers were
sheets of paper 8 1/2 x 11 stapled to trees & poles. A sports writer for the
Orlando Sentinel endured it and wrote a very large column about it. All negative
(justified) and suggested that no one rune any Space Coast Runners races
especially the marathon & half Marathon that was due the Sunday after
Thanksgiving. I had just been elected President of SCR and this was BAD. I had
someone volunteer to be race director and unfortunately although being an
exceptional runner that had run Boston Marathon several times lacked some
organizational skills. The result was a letter I wrote to the Sentinel making a
promise that the SCR marathon races would be well organized, well marked (thus
those SCR "A" frame signs that are still being used) And well directed by Jack
Kenworthy. This brings up the point - When you decide to put on a race get help
from people that know what they are doing and have a love for the sport. It is
all in the details !!

such as they are. The top 3 are probably accurate because there was a police
motorcycle escort at a critical U-turn at around 7.5 miles. The next several
runners missed the turn, with 4th through 6th going over 14 miles. I probably
ran 13.6 or 13.7 but it's hard to tell because the mile splits didn't seem to be
evenly spaced. It's too bad because it was perfect weather (57 to 62 F, light
winds) along a beautiful shaded paved bike path with lakes, parks, and lots of
trees in an upscale, residential area. It was hard to tell you were in a big
city. There was plenty of aid and police traffic control at every intersection.

But please remind me why I do the Buttar events. In their 10K in August, they
had no finish clock or anyone calling times. After waiting about 2 hours for
results, they finally just sent everyone home and said they would mail awards.
The problem: they didn't enter the names of the runners in their computers until
race day, even though I had registered weeks in advance. A few years ago at the
Orlando Xtreme marathon about half of the field cut the course because of a
mismarked turn, and then they put some ladies that ran a 2:40 or so half
marathon in the marathon results ahead of a lot of fast runners, without
bothering to check that they ran 2 laps instead of 4 laps (which were chip
timed). This morning when I picked up my race packet, instead of giving me the
same chip number as my race number, they gave out chips randomly and we had to
stand in line for 20-30 minutes so that someone with a laptop could enter the
numbers. There were runners still in
line up to one minute before the start.

There were 182 runners in the half marathon. For the first mile I found myself
in 5th place behind Rick Copley, Jeff Tecau, Michael Jungen, and Brian Kessler
(in my 50-54 age group). At mile 1 (6:50), Kelly Arribas came up along side and
she politely asked if the music in her headphones was too loud. No, I couldn't
hear it at all. By mile 2 (13:50) she had pulled ahead, and I was also passed by
Erik Schneider and Nikki Bell, who was in second place for the women. Mile 3 was
21:00 and started to worry me. Mile 4 was missing. Mile 5 was sooner than
expected at 34:20. I passed Nikki at an aid station. Miles 6 and 7 were 41:25
and 49:25, but I know it did not take me 8 minutes to run that last mile.

Just past mile 7 we climbed a pedestrian bridge over Semoran Blvd., the only
hill on the course. A cop on a motorcycle with lights flashing came the other
way followed by Rick Copley at just over 53 minutes. This was mile 8 for him.
The next two runners were spread out about a minute back each.

A couple of minutes later i saw a big U-turn arrow painted on the bike path.
Was this the turn? Every other turn had clearly marked signs and often
volunteers directing us, but there was nothing else, and besides, there were
still 3 other runners ahead of me that had not come back yet. Also, there were
many painted arrows and mile splits from other races that were not accompanied
by signs. So I kept going.

About 200 yards later was a second U-turn arrow. Again no signs, no
volunteers, and no sign of the 3 runners still ahead of me, so I kept going.

Another 200 yards and I saw a table on its side, a cooler and cups on the
ground, but no volunteers. So there was supposed to be an aid station set up,
but nobody here. This confirmed that the two U-turn arrows were not where we
were supposed to turn.

Another 50 yards was a third painted U-turn arrow that also said "1/2
marathon". But still there was no sign of the 3 runners ahead of me. I couldn't
turn now. The gap was over 5 minutes, way too long...

Another couple hundred yards we crossed Forsythe Blvd., a busy 4 lane road.
There were no police directing traffic, unlike every other intersection at even
the most quiet streets. Surely the last U-turn was for us. I ran back and met
Nikki, who didn't know either. I turned around again, crossed the road, and ran
into Brian Kessler, Kelly Arribas, and Erik Schneider in 4th through 6th place.
They had gone another 600 yards and asked a jogger if there was a race (no) and
decided they had gone way too far and turned around. I turned with them and they
pulled ahead.

Mile 8 was 1:00:20. This was 4 minutes slow based on my 7 mile split, or 5
minutes slow based on my 5 and 6 mile splits. As I met dozens of other runners
still heading out I yelled that there were 3 turn around arrows and to just
choose one because there was nobody telling you where to turn. I also informed
some aid station workers of the problem in what must have been a less than
pleasant tone of voice.

I was getting tired and my pace slowed to about 7:10/mile for the rest of the
race as I dropped from 7th to 9th place. Michael Scures, who is in my age group,
passed me around mile 11. I no longer cared because I had been on pace to run
1:31-1:32 but my time would be meaningless now. Marcus Sobering passed me with
about 1/4 mile to go. Both had said they turned around at the road. When Marcus
passed me, he complained that he would normally be done by now. Me too. At the
finish line there was no clock or anyone calling times. Brian Kessler was on
pace to run around 1:25 and finished 1:33 with Kelly Ambas as first female not
far behind. Nikki Bell was second in 1:39 losing a few minutes as well. One
other runner said he had hoped to get (I think) a 1:25 to qualify for a seeded
spot at the New York marathon, but those plans were dashed.

After the race I learned that only the first 100 finishers got finisher medals
because the ran out. They also ran out of chips and shirts, I was told. At least
the results were prompt, such as they are. They also had enough bagels. Runners
who finished later said there was a cone at the turn, so maybe they are
accurate.

There was also a 5K. Amy Hines won in 18:10, followed by Natalie Lockhart in
20:14, beating all of the men.

The ROY rules for the Tiger Dash 5K were corrected to show the race is
eligible for Age 15+. This was an error. It is being treated like all our
usual 5K races.

Maybe a lot of the faster runners don't participate because of the higher
expense now of completing all the races. And, at $150 tops for the prize
purse, that maybe covers the cost of entering. Not a great incentive for a
competitive Grand Prix. If it's just a participation series, then that's
different than ROY. (IMO) One that I did in Virginia had cheaper races and
$400 for male and female winners, then a sliding scale after that through
third place. Masters winners got the same as overall winners too!

Cathy

I personally like the original rules that Robin Weaver and I came up with
for the first ROY. No dropped races because someone wants to participate in
another series or a prestige race. The Idea was to use the same format as
the Track Shack's Gran Prix except require membership in the Space Coast
Runners. The goal was to encourage local runners to join the club and run in
local races. By having a larger number of races in the series the ones that
had greater participation had a better chance at the awards then the cream
of the crop runners that get their special recognition every race they run.
But that was in 1982 and races were only $5. If you look at the finish times
I think they were faster then. Why is that ??

I'm pretty sure that Coach Butler only dropped his race (Tiger Dash) down to
a 5K for this year only. This was done at SCR's request because we had back
to back 10K's and it was close to the Melbourne Music Marathon. I believe
Coach Butler plans on a 5K & 10K again next year. When that happens SCR will
likely count the 10K only towards series points.
In addition to what races and which lengths should comprise the series, we
also discuss the amount of drops. I personally would prefer no drops like
most of the other series. Please feel free to let your opinions be heard by
speaking with Board members or feel free to attend the monthly meetings! We
are a fun, dysfunctional group and always welcome fresh ideas and
comments!!!

It's too bad that Tiger Dash is only a 5K now. It seems to be part of a
continuing trend toward shorter races to attract more runners. In 1982 there
were 14 races in the SCR results and 11 of them were longer than 5K. Now the
calendar shows 28 races listed in Brevard County and for 20 of those the
longest distance offered is 5K or shorter. Running Zone seems to have
figured this out, which is why all of the races in their series are 3K to
5K.

I'd like to see the return of double points for the marathon, but I guess
I'm outvoted by people running the half.

Alright. I was looking online, and the Tiger Dash 5k is not checked for Ages
15+.

http://www.spacecoa strunners. org/roy.html

Thanks John!

I think there are 8 races:

Fall into Winter 5K

SCC 15K

Marathon or 1/2 marathon

Reindeer Run 5k

Tiger Dash 5k

Eye of the Dragon 10k

Downtown Melbourne 5k

Space Walk of Fame 8K

You still get two dropped races for any of these 8 events.

From what I can see, there are really only 7 races that you could do, since
the 1/2 marathon and marathon are on the same day and time. Which means you
really have only one race to drop if you want to have maximum allowable
points. Correct?

Cathy

The Tiger Dash 10K was not done this year because SCR did not want to have
another 10K in the Runner of the Year series. Doug Butler would have been
happy to host that race along with the Tiger Dash 5K, but without Runner of
the Year support, very few runners would choose to do the 10k. There is a 5k
just about every week, so personally I would have much rather seen ROY keep
the 10k and drop a 5k. Running Zone has already done a great job providing
short races with 5ks, a 2 miler, and a 3k, so I would love to see the ROY
series focus on some longer distance races to give us a good range of
distances.

I would like to think that ROY should be a good gauge of a well rounded
runner that can run different distances. Right now there are only 8 races in
the series, and half of them are 5ks. Considering that you can to drop two
races, you could dominate the 5k distance and win ROY with mediocre finishes
at an 8k and a 10k.

On the other hand, I don't take the initiative to be a part of the SCR
meetings, so I really shouldn't complain. I greatly appreciate the efforts
of all the active SCR members, so I hope my opinion can be voiced without it
sounding like criticism.

One note on the Windover 15k course. I heard it was re-measured this year,
and I believe the start line was moved back from the usual location. There
may have been other adjustments, but I didn't notice them. However, this
year my GPS, as well as several other runners that wore GPS watches, showed
the course being very accurate at about 9.3 miles. Over the past 2-3 years,
most of us were seeing distances around 9.1 miles or less. That means at
6:00/mile pace, the course used to be over a minute short.

In my opinion, the course was very accurate this year, so although it may be
discouraging to compare your time to last year, I believe the times are an
accurate 15k.

The 15K moved from Melbourne Beach to Windover Farms in 2004. I think the
reason was that Melbourne Beach wasn't very supportive of the race and
wanted large fees for police traffic control.

Don Dore Jr. has been supplying me with race results from 1981-92 typed in
from old SCR newsletters. There is still a gap of a few years that he is
gradually filling in.

There were some impressive age graded times. Mike Kodya, 55, 58:29, age
graded 49:18. Roger Roullier, 72, 1:07:28, age graded 48:14. Anne Dockery,
61, 1:14:07, age graded 55:57.

Matt -

What a terrific write up of a very nice event. Thank you for being such a
faithful archivist of SCR events.

I was looking back through past SPC 15K results and even thought I did not
find 1992, the last year I ran this event, it was exciting to read the
results from some fast past years.

1991 (http://mattmahoney. net/scr/91scc15k .txt) had the Bulter "brothers"
and Bill McCord in their prime.

1990 (http://mattmahoney. net/scr/90scc. txt) had a course, the old Melb Bch
course, record 49:08 by Doug Butler and George Revels in 3rd place with a
55:16, good enough to win this year's event. (I miss George. He was a great
SCR member and a Gator to boot.)

When did event move to Windover Farms? Anyother course used? What is the
fastest time on any of the courses for SPC 15K?

Cheers, David
(happy with my 1:13)

The Baldwin Park (Orlando) half marathon results are posted to
http://www.buttar.com/events/running/baldwinparkhalf/results_2009.htm
such as they are.

Was
this the turn? Every other turn had clearly marked signs and often volunteers
directing us, but there was nothing else, and besides, there were still 3 other
runners ahead of me that had not come back yet. Also, there were many painted
arrows and mile splits from other races that were not accompanied by signs. So I
kept going.

About 200 yards later was a second U-turn arrow. Again no signs, no volunteers,
and no sign of the 3 runners still ahead of me, so I kept going.

Another 200 yards and I saw a table on its side, a cooler and cups on the
ground, but no volunteers. So there was supposed to be an aid station set up,
but nobody here. This confirmed that the two U-turn arrows were not where we
were supposed to turn.

Another 50 yards was a third painted U-turn arrow that also said "1/2 marathon".
But still there was no sign of the 3 runners ahead of me. I couldn't turn now.
