I don't have complete results from the Footloose 5000 in Titusville today,
but I'll post them when I get them. Frank Kapr won in 17:59. I don't know
the 2'nd and 3'rd place runners (HS XC I think) but they ran about 18:20 and
19:50. Terry Hayden was 4'th and 1'st masters in 19:51. I couldn't quite
keep up after he passed me at 1.5 miles, so I finished 5'th in 19:55 with
Dave Hernandez and Pat Chambers a few seconds back. First woman was around
23. Altogether about 60-80 runners.
The race was cross country on mostly grass with a few soft sandy spots at
the BCC Titusville campus. The times seemed about 30-60 seconds slow for a
5K, though I ran barefoot, so I was able to make up the difference and run
about my normal time. Bob Calloway, who normally runs barefoot on XC races,
wore shoes today. They had remeasured the course since last year and moved
the start and finish back to add a couple of hundred yards.

I updated the ROY results on the SCR web page
(http://mahoney4.home.netcom.com/scr) after scanning them from the March
newsletter and doing a little hand editing to correct the scanner errors.
The newsletter says its for the last 7 races. I don't believe that includes
the Run for the Light, since Dede Heinrich never sent any results as far as
I know. Anyone know her email address? It also doesn't include the
Wuestoff 5K from this weekend. I didn't see an email address for that race
either, so I'm not hopeful about getting those results posted anytime soon.
You might also notice that the race calendar is now in HTML, so if the race
has a website or email address, you can just click on it instead of typing
it in. I hope this doesn't cause problems putting it into the newsletter
next month.

Winding through gentle pine and oak forests on soft, grassy double track
trail on a warm sunny day, the peaceful serenity of the Knight Trail 50K was
interrupted only by the constant BAM! BAM! BAM! from the nearby shooting
range. The race started off with 3 runners in the lead pack. Alex de Costa
of Brazil had a chance to earn $1800 from his sponsors for a victory, but he
was dogged by previous winner Danny Ripka and by Eddie Hensley, a top local
triathlete running his first ultra. De Costa raced at a wide range of
distances, from 3000 meters in under 9 minutes to 50K in 3:35. Hensley had
the 8'th fastest marathon split at Ironman (in a field of 1500), and a 5K PR
of 16:08.
The course (which seems to change every year) was 7 out and back repeats
(6.8 km + 6 x 7.2 km), so I had a good view of the race. By the third lap
the pack, which had been running about 6:30/mile, had broken up with de
Costa in the lead, followed by Ripka about a minute back and Hensley by
another minute. When de Costa lapped me at about 20 miles, I ran with him
for about a minute and could tell that he had slowed somewhat to perhaps
7:00-7:15/mile. Ripka was about 3 or 4 minutes back by then, but was still
on a 6:30 pace, and I told him he could catch de Costa. By the next lap
they had exchanged places. I later learned that de Costa had a problem with
his knee and stopped for 8 minutes to massage it. After the race he had a
soft brace on it and seemed to be limping.
Hensley got a hard lesson in his first ultra. By 20 miles he was far behind
the others and did not look at all happy. The next time I saw him he was
walking, quite slowly. I caught him at the marathon point at the end of the
6'th lap (about 4 hours), and he told me he was quitting. Ripka had already
won in 3:33:09.
Kristie Concepcion was the women's winner. She started with the second
group of runners and ran a steady pace to finish in 4:46:01.
Norm Frank, age 68, wore 707 for the number of marathons he had run. Unlike
some ultras where he would quit after 26.2 miles, he finished this one in
about 8:15.
I finished in 4:48, about 6'th or 7'th place, out of 58 runners. Like most
runners, I was slower than last year (4:30, 10'th place), which I heard was
a mile short. That was when Brian Teason won in 2:59:05.
In order to toughen my feet for Barkley next month, I ran the first 5 laps
in sandals, then one lap in beach slippers and the last lap barefoot.
Afterwards, I walked the last two laps with my wife Joan, who finished in
just under 10 hours to win the turtle award.

Thanks, and sorry for the mix-up.

After the tiger dash 10K a lot of runners including me were about 2 minutes
slower than at the run for the light 10K 2 weeks ago. So was this course
long, or the last one short, or was it the warmer weather? Opinions?

Barbara,
It has been my dream to open a quality running store in Brevard County.
We could sure use one! Sports Authority in Melbourne is about as good as it
gets around here. Sometimes you can get a real runner to assist you. If
you what personal advise and sizing your best bet is Track Shack in Orlando
(www.trackshack.com). My wife and I pretty much know hat we want so we get
most of our running stuff online at www.roadrunnersports.com . Their
website also has interactive advise on what shoe is best for you. I would
start there for advise, then see if Sports Authority has the shoe, at what
price, and what size. If that doesn't work try Track Shack.

Hello fellow runners,
I am new to the area, and am looking for a "running" shop to purchase new
running shoes. Where do real runners go around here besides Sports
Authority?
Thanks,
