BlankOur Heroine
This letter is to help explain why I am helping a young lady raise money in
support of her decision to do a three day, sixty mile walk to raise funds for
the Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer Foundation and the National Philanthropic Trust
Breast Cancer Fund. In order to participate in this event she must raise atleast
$2,200.00. She hopes to raise much more ! I hope you can help her reach her
goal.
The young lady I am helping is named Deborah Karin Carscallen. She is a divorced
mother sending her daughter Alexis through College. She is presently employed as
a Hospice nurse for Health First in Brevard County Florida. Deborah spent eleven
years as a avionics technician in the United States Navy when she decided to
get a degree in nursing and pursue the noble cause of caring for people.
On January 5th 1998 while Deborah was working as a nurse in Louisville Kentucky
she heard that her younger sister Lisa had been diagnosed with breast cancer.
Lisa was just thirty years old. Over the next few years Lisa's treatments
included lumpectomy, radiation, chemotherapy and eventually mastectomy. It was
during these perilous times that Lisa's knight in shining armor, Paul. proposed.
In August of 2002 while Lisa was jogging through Melbourne Village with a
friend, she was having a very difficult time catching her breath. When she went
to the doctor it was determined that her left lung had become detached from the
lung cavity. Upon hearing of this situation Deborah flew to Melbourne to be
with her younger sister. It was then that Deborah realized the gravity of the
situation. Lisa was loosing her battle as the cancer had spread.
In December of 2003 Deborah decided to move back to Melbourne to be with her
sister. She gave away most of her furniture and sold her house at a
considerable loss. She drove a rental truck with her daughter and the furniture
she had left and rented an apartment for herself and her daughter in Melbourne.
Deborah then took a position as a charge nurse in Holmes Regional Hospital with
the full knowledge that her sister Lisa would eventually have to be
hospitalized. In August of 2003 Lisa took a turn for the worse. She was having
trouble with her right lung and within two months she died. She died at home
while Her husband Paul held one hand and her sister Deborah held the other. It
is truly a story of the love of one sister for another !
Deborah Karin Carscallen is our heroine and we are so fortunate that she is also
our daughter.
If you care to help Deborah with her goal we thank you.
