Greetings Coaches, Parents, Athletes and Friends of Junior Women's Rowing -

As we labor indoors with fingers crossed for an early spring, we are beginning make preparations for this year's USRowing Development Camps and Selection Camp!

Female athletes born 1990 or later and with any experience level are encouraged to attend one of the nine identification camps we have set up across the country. There is no prerequisite to attend, they are open to all age eligible athletes (including coxswains) as well as parents and coaches.

At each one-day identification camp, the athletes will be given a presentation on the structure of the Junior Women's system including the Junior National Team, The High Performance Team, Selection Camp, Development Camp for Junior As and Junior Bs, and the Junior B Sculling Camp. The coaches will also present information on training and preparation for high level junior athletes.

After the presentation, there will be an opportunity to do an extended warm-up and a 2000m erg test followed by a session on the water with the national team coaches (weather permitting). The schedule of each identification camp may vary slightly, and will also include a question and answer session with the Junior National Team coaches and, in some locations, an athlete or two from last year's Junior Team.

The identification camps will be held as follows:
Feb 16 - Seattle, WA
Feb 17 - Marin, CA
Feb 24 - Boston, MA (as part of the CRASH-b sprints)
Mar 1 - Conshohocken, PA
Mar 2 - Washington, DC
Mar 9 - DeLand, FL
Mar 15 - Chicago, IL
Mar 16 - Pelham, NY

Coaches,

I am going to try to identify the top individuals in our district by
starting the Southeast Youth Rowing All-District Team. I want to select
athletes that are top in rowing and scholastics. I want to get them a little
more PR if that is possible.

I will take information on top 25% of finishers male and female from
regional Indoor Erg Events this January. I will then attempt to email the
programs and get information submitted to select a first team (8), second
team (8) and honorable mention (8). I am still working on coxswain
selection.

Information will be: (example)

Name:
Program:
Height:
Weight:
Erg Score: Pulled from Erg Events
GPA:
ACT:
SAT:
Competitive History
Local News contacts

Once selected I will ask for a pic from the program to post on the website
and in regional media.

If any of you have ideas on this please share them with me.

Mike Townsend moved into my position as the head coach of the juniors and manager of the Augusta Rowing Club.  His email is michael.arcboathouse@ gmail.com, so you can take mine off the list and add his.    I went to Michigan State to be their boatman, so we'll see each other again at the south central qualifyer.

FSRA Coaches: The LOC has reviewed the request from a few FSRA teams to add the pairs event in this years race. Allen,

I have four rowers plus myself that can help you with launch driving on Saturday.  They including myself all have experience driving launches on buoyed courses at Langley.  These are my guys who are racing only once in the whole regatta on Sunday in a 4x.  We are glad to help on Sat.  We could drive in the slots from noon to 6pm.  That would give you 15 slots filled.    Since I am  only bringing  a total  of  30 rowers, that should also fill out my team's work load share.  Let me know.

Also, if you get in a dire situation I can bring a launch (16 foot v hull) and engine.   I would rather not, but you let me know.

Can I enter a boys lwt 8+ and a boy's 2V8+ or do i need to have a Hwt Champ 8+ before the hwt 2v8+?

Two important pieces of information regarding Jr. Women’s Rowing

1)       We are approaching the last opportunity for athletes to submit their information for consideration for the Jr Team and the Jr Dev Team.

I will be making decisions regarding the invitations in the next 2 weeks.

2)         In our canvassing the nation in search of athletes for the Development camp system, we found several 1991,1992, and a few 1993 athletes to fill the Jr B Sculling camps (10 day camps teaching sculling and helping young athletes aspire to reach their potential).  BUT there is still a lot of space available.  This is an entry level to the Development Camp system so we are still looking for high potential athletes, but the “standards” are a bit looser because we are looking for novices/freshmen.  If you have anyone on the team that is that potential rock star we would love to hear about them.  I would love to see each team recommend one or two top youngsters (no older than 1991 birthdays).  Things that would make the athletes appealing to the Dev Camp Coaches…  Some combination of the profile below (note, they do not have to be the total package)

Height 5’9”

Weight athletically matching their height

Fitness some very skilled athlete converting from another sport

Erg 8:00 ish

Determination, Competitive nature, Hard worker

Coaches...

...The Southeast Youth Rowing Association is proud to bring you the following opportunity in corporation with
C O A C H 2 | The Coach's Coach.

Thank you in advance for helping to improve our sport, especially starting in the SE region.  By supporting consistent communication between coaches you are enabling and encouraging greater levels of training, education and development of those who dedicate themselves to the sport of rowing, including yourself.

First, we'd like to invite you all to dial in for a free teleclass on Tuesday, April 10th, 2007 at 8pm (EST) . During this hour-long conference call, we will interview a Div-I, NCAA women's rowing coach on the topic of training methodology.  If you have any specific questions on that topic, please send via e-mail to info@...  <mailto:info@...> .

Call lines will be limited to what we reserve in advance so if you plan to dial in Tues. 4/10 (8pm), please also send an e-mail to info@...  so we can reserve the appropriate number of lines.

The Dial-in # and access code will be provided once reserved, and will be sent via e-mail to those requesting a spot. There is no charge to participate other than your normal fees to place a long-distance call.

Secondly, please feel free to suggest future topics for ongoing Teleclasses.  Depending on interest and available presenters, we will continue to host them at a minimum on the 2nd Tuesday of every month; later...perhaps twice a month...or even weekly at some point down the road.

Lastly, we're looking to soon build an online community of coaches where you can exchange ideas and easily communicate with each other. The overall goal is that we all become better coaches of the sport of rowing, and better mentors to the athletes we lead.  Help us create something awesome by letting us know what you'd like to see, hear, and have!

Remember: Join the crew on Tues, April 10th @ 8pm(EST) ; reserve a line/submit ideas & questions by sending email to info@...

Best of success to you and your crews on the water this spring!

athlete really is helping the Southeastcrews strive for something
other than being the fastest within thier program. This year we are
taking 20 open weight men and women and 12 lightweight men and women
and 10 coxswains spots are filling ast so please get the word out.
Thank you

I will be conducting a USRowing  Referee Clinic on Monday, February 5 from  6:00 to 9:00P.M.  It is being held at World Publications which is located in the Winter Park Village at 460 N. Orlando Avenue, Suite 200. (It is physically across the street from the Regal Winter Park Village 20 movie theatres.) Rowing events continue to grow in Florida and we need more referees to provide coverage for the safety of the athletes. Also, there will be Referee clinics given in North and South Florida this Spring. Please contact me if you have any questions and if you  are interested in attending. The clinic is authorized by USRowing and there is no charge for attending it.

From the Jr. Women’s National Team Rowing coaches… an open call.

(if this message has reached you inappropriately, please forward to the appropriate coach)

A full invitation is listed below.  Here is a summary…

The Jr Women’s Rowing Team is hosting a day of Identification in 10 cities around the country.

http://www.usrowing.com/JuniorNationalTeam/Camps/07jrwidcam.aspx

Open call – however our most successful candidates fit one of the profiles in the letter below

NEW – Increased sculling emphasis.  Looking for great scullers and great athletes interested in learning to scull

NEW – Introductory Sculling programs for 1992 birthdays

_*_*_*_*_*_*_*_*_*_*_*_*_*_*_*_*_*_*_*_*_*_*_*_*_*_*_*_*_*_*_*

To the Junior Women’s Coaches:

I am writing to remind you of the opportunities afforded to the Jr. Women regarding the Jr National, Jr Development, and Developmental Sculling Camps.

In just a few weeks there will be an Identification camp for the athletes in your area.

Information regarding these Identification Camps can be found on the USRowing Website.

http://www.usrowing.com/JuniorNationalTeam/Camps/07jrntidca.aspx

I urge all coaches to pass this information along to the top athletes in your programs.

The published Gold Medal Standards for the different age groups are as follows:

Born in 1989    7:18 for 2K or better (by spring)

Born in 1990    7:32 for 2K or better (by spring)

Born in 1991    7:46 for 2K or better (by spring)

Born in 1992    8:00 for 2K or better (by spring)

While these are the goals, they are not strict cut-offs, we recognize different programs put different emphasis on the ergs.  We also leave room for the exceptional athlete who has yet to realize the potential.  All ages are eligible for the selection camp (the 1989 birthdays are ONLY eligible for the selection camp).  The 1990 and 1991 birthdays are eligible for the Development camp with the 1991 and 1992 birthdays being eligible for the Developmental Sculling Camps.  This system is designed to help the High potential athlete achieve the skills and experience necessary to help the Jr National Team in years to come.  For this reason the development camps are in search of superstars as well as diamonds in the rough.

Outside of the scores above, we are also looking for girls who meet any of the below:

  1. Top sculler at your club
  2. Can pull 6x(weight/2.2) watts for a 1 minute piece
    1. Set the erg vent on 10
    2. Set the monitor on Watts
    3. Begin from a stopped wheel
    4. Full slide, open rate
  3. 6 feet tall or 6 foot wingspan.

Do not hesitate to advise super athletic novices to attend!

If you have any superstars or diamonds in the rough who were born in 1989, 1990, 1991 and 1992, or if you have athletes who would benefit from the experience of the ID camp; please encourage those athletes to visit the link given above and pursue this opportunity.

If you or the athletes have any questions, please feel free to e-mail me at EJCat3@...

I hope to see representatives from all your programs,

Thanks,

Eric

Dear Allen
A hearty thank you to you and the leadership of the Southeast Youth
Rowing Association for these arrangements - dorms, eating, etc - for
the championship regatta. These regattas were always a financial stretch
for our public school team - and I'm quite certain this will make it easier
for them this year. Although my high schoolers have now graduated, I
hope to see many of you at those regattas shared with the college set!

The Southeast Youth Rowing Association is pleased to announce the location of
the 2007
Southeast Youth Championship Regatta.

The event will be May 12-13, 2007

Heats and finals for regional races will be on Saturday.

Events qualifying for the USRA Youth National Championships will have heats and
reps will
be on Saturday and finals on Sunday morning.

This year the race moves north to be held on the buoyed 7-lane 2000m course of
East
Bank Beach on Lake Hartwell in Clemson, South Carolina. Hosted by the Clemson
College
Rowing Club. Clemson crew holds the Clemson Sprints each year and SEYRA feels
that they
will be able use this experience to hold a great event for our programs too.

Please note that Clemson is having graduation on Friday of our event. So hotel
space is at
a premium. Clemson Rowing has secured housing in the Clemson dorms on campus for
the athletes and chaperones. The cost will be under $20 per night per person. In
your trip
planning please make arrangements for a same gender chaperon for every 15
athlete of
each gender that you place in the dorm. Clemson crew will provide dorm security
however,
they are not babysitting our kids.

The Clemson dinning facility will be open to prepare hot and cold breakfast at
05:30 each
morning for $5.50 each meal. The dinning service will not be available during
the lunch
period as most crews feed their crews on site. Friday, the dinning hall will
provide a pasta
dinner for athletes for $5.50 per athlete. However, Saturday's evening meals
will up to
each individual programs. There are several eateries around the campus to choose
from.

The event packet will be available January 30, 2007.

Some highlights of this year are...
Streamlined event categories by reducing the number of events and clarifying
categories.
Last year there was a bit of confusion and the committee felt it better to clear
up and
consolidate some categories. This should prove for great racing. Here is a
preview of the
schedule.

1* Women's Youth 1x
2* Men's Youth 1x
3 Women's 2V 4+
4 Men's 2V 8+
5* Women's Ltwt Youth 2x
6* Men's Ltwt Youth 2x
7* Women's Youth 2x
8* Men's Youth 2x
9 Women's FN 8+
10 Men's FN 4+
11* Women's Ltwt Youth 8+
12* Men's Ltwt Youth 4+
13* Women's Youth 4x
14 Women's 2V 8+
15 Men's 2V 4+
16* Women's Ltwt Youth 4+
17* Men's Ltwt Youth 8+
18* Women's Youth 4+
19* Men's Youth 4+
20* Men's Youth 4x
21 Women's FN 4+
22 Men's FN 8+
23* Women's Youth 8+
24* Men's Youth 8+

The addition of the Ltwt 2x as a qualification event for the National Youth
Championship.
The Southeast has some great sculling programs that I believe will represent our
district
well.

Flat entry fees of $14 per seat with no cap. The new fee structure is different
than what
the regatta has used in the past. However, The committee was convinced that the
regatta
must break even and pay for services incurred by the event to continue in the
future. With
a majority of the SEYC using small boats (4+/x/2x/1x) this fee structure gives
all
categories a fare fee. This will reduce entry fees for several of the small boat
events ,
however the eights will see a slight increase in fees.

Well that is all I have at this time.
