Hello SCRR friends & fellow runners -
Just a quick email to let the group know that BJ's Restaurants is now the
presenting sponsor for the Make Room for Santa club race in December!

If you haven't registered, we have a small discount available (better discount
links are on the SCRR website) that will also result in a donation to the BJ's
chartiable foundation which is a big sponsor of Cystic Fibrosis and other local
charities.  Here are the details:
Just go to www.renegaderaceseries.com and click on Make Room for Santa. Then
under Event Details, click on Register Now, then follow the screen
prompts. Enter the discount code: bjsfoundation you get a $2 discount and the
BJ’s Foundation receives $2 for each registrant. (it’s case sensitive, so
use all lower case and no punctuation).

I hope you don't mind the quick plug via email.  BJ's is excited to get more
involved in local races and we've even got a decent group of runners coming
from our home office and restaurants to support the event!

Thanks again.  I look forward to seeing everyone at the run this weekend.
All the best,
Matt

Hello all,

I apologize upfront for many of you receiving this email several times. I hope
you feel as I do that it is better to be over communicated with than not at all.

We are wrapping up another successful season of the Stein Training and Coaching
program. We had over 40 athletes participate in the Summer-Fall season and it
has proved to be our most successful season yet. Attached is an overview of the
program with updated highlights from many of the athletes that participated this
past season. Our athletes range from beginners looking to finish their first
races 5k, 10K, 1/2 marathon or marathon to athletes looking to run sub 2:45 and
qualify for the Olympic Marathon Trials. On the 5k/10K side, the athletes also
range from beginners to runners with focus times under 16:00 for the 5K
distance. The key to participation is to pick a focus distance to race 5k/10K,
1/2 marathon or marathon), come up with specific goals for the season, the
desire to be coached/follow the custom training schedule provided and work hard
to improve. I develop a custom program based on your goals and current ability
with structured workouts when your body is ready to handle them each week. We
meet as a group to run the workouts and many of our recovery runs, you will keep
an online running log that we both will have access to so I can make changes and
help you along the way, we decide on a race schedule throughout the season and I
build the plan to get you ready for each of them...etc.

The kick-off for the Winter/Spring 2010 program will be on Thursday Dec. 10th at
5:30pm. We will plan to meet in the bleachers at the Irvine High School at
5:30pm. I will do my best to cover off the materials to help each new member
understand the structure of what can be expected and give the returning athletes
insight into some of the workouts and new elements that will be added for the
coming season. I also hope to do quick introductions of the athletes
considering participation and I will take a few moments to answer any top of
mind questions. The meeting should not last more then 15-30 minutes.

I have attached a list of committed runners, thus far, for next season and their
peak races/distances. If you are remotely interested in competing next season
please send an email to me (dsteingte@...) and I will add you to the
list. I will need to know the distance/race you would like to peak for. If you
did not participate in the program last season I will need to get answers to the
following questions....How many days are you running each week, how many miles,
what kind of pace, what is the distance and mileage your longest run each week
to date? Have you run any recent races? If so, what were the distances and
times? Do you have a goal time you want to hit for your peak race? How many
marathons have you done? What are your PRs over 5k, 10k, 1/2 marathon and
marathon if you have raced that distance. Injury status...are you healthy? Any
pains? Any other information you feel may be relevant and would like to share
with me?

If you are sure you will be participating you can go ahead and send this
information. If you are unsure and want to wait until after the meeting and
would like to meet some of the other members that is fine also. Please still
send me an email letting me know that you are tenative and will be attending the
kick-off meeting.

If you have not signed a Waiver Form in the past I do require that each athlete
do so before participating in formal workouts with the group. It is attached
also...

Lastly, as many of you have already seen from the email sent by Dave Schiller
following the kick-off meeting the South Coast Roadrunners club has invited
Chris Grant, Jim Grant's wife, to join us at 6pm in the bleachers. We will
officially be naming and dedicating the BackBay loop that Jim ran the day prior
to his passing after him. We will ask Chris to join the club the following
weekend (12/19) to kick-off the first Jim Grant Memorial run.

After each of these announcements, we will proceed to do the normal Thursday
club run and will wrap-up the night at Lamp Post pizza for some hanging out and
fun.

Hope to see all of you on Dec. 10th...

Danny

Hi All,

On December 12th we will be making our annual trip to San Diego for the Foot
Locker High School Cross Country Championships. The races are very exciting and
always generate enthusiasm for running, in our members who have watched the
races over the last few years. We will be leaving from Heritage Park and car
pooling to Balboa Park. In the past we have done a short run over the course, in
addition to chasing the kids around during the race. This year the championship
falls the day before our club race, Make Room for Santa, on Sunday the 13th,
which will work well for a light run the day before the Sunday race. After the
races we will be going to Old Town for lunch. Over the next few weeks I will
give more updates on times and other logistical matters.

Contact me, bradwobig@..., or let me know at the club runs if you are
interested in going.

Thank You,

Brad

I was fortunate enough to just sneak in under the wire by 25 seconds
yesterday and get a Boston Qualifier at the Fresno Marathon. That's all I
have to say about my race for now because but I'd like to tell you about the
Eye-Q Fresno Marathon.

When I started to get sick a couple of days before the Portland Marathon
last month and had to cancel out and I selected Fresno as my marathon over
Santa Clarita. I got pretty much the same reaction I got back in 2004 when I
told people I was going to run CIM up in Sacramento. Why on each are you
going to drive up to a godforsaken place like Fresno? Now it seems everyone
in the club has heard of CIM and we get a group going up every year. This
was only the second running of the Fresno Marathon and they had 650 runners
plus a half marathon with 4,000 runners and walkers. The folks up at Fresno
know how to put on a race. The really pay attention to detail to make the
day not only a great running experience but an overall memorable experience.
I'd rate in similar to Catalina and that race has a very loyal following,
sort of a Catalina Marathon on roads without the hills and mud.

I stayed at an Econolodge just 2 miles from the start. In spite of the name,
the hotel was brand new and a lot nicer than many place that I've paid $250
a night for and it was only $62 including tax including a free breakfast
that I skipped. Just down the block was a big mall with many high end stores
and restaurants, including Ruth's Chris, REI, Elephant Bar etc.

Since I drove up alone, I opted for the pasta feed held at the race expo
where they had Dick Beardsly as the speaker and he was fantastic. "Dick is
well known throughout the running world. He still holds the course record
for Duluth's famous Grandma's Marathon. He is also the owner of the fifth
fastest men's marathon in U.S. History. Dick's most famous run was probably
his second place finish to Alberto Salazar in what is known throughout the
marathon world as "The Duel in the Sun" in the 1982 Boston Marathon."
Although I'm sure he's told that story thousands of times it sounded fresh
as he retold to us Friday night. He's one of the best speakers on any
subject that I've ever heard.

Race Day.

The half went off first at 7am and the marathon followed at 7:30. The had
100 porto potty's at the start area mere yards away with no lines at all
since there were only 650 of us lining up. I'm sure it was a bit more
congested before the start of the half. I slept in at my hotel and parked
close by and jogged the half mile to the starting area. It was easy to find
the pace groups and the atmosphere was very relaxed missing the usual mob
scene at the start. The course itself was reasonably scenic and quite flat
with a few tunnels under streets over the first 21 miles. I could have done
without the 100 foot hill at mile 22.5 but I pre-drove the last part of the
course so I knew what to expect. There were still some walkers on the course
over the last 4 miles who were still completing their half marathons but it
wasn't much of an issue for me, they were spaced out and the road was wide.
The race had plenty of volunteers at the water and Gatorade stops and GU at
miles 7 and 21.

Post Race.

Less the 30 yards from the finish line, they served up a hot breakfast.
Close by they had huge containers of hot coffee (and it was good stuff)
topped off with ice cream sundaes they served for desert (ice cream on top
of a warm brownie with chocolate syrup and whipped cream) and absolutely no
lines. They had plenty of tables, and plenty of food to go around. The
finish area is inside a park with a lake that I'd compare to Central park in
HB, lots of ducks and geese and the trees were filled with fall colors. It
was a very serene setting to relax and wind down after the race. Later I
headed over to the nearby beer garden which was set up just behind the
park's amphitheatre to have a Michelob Ultra and listen to some music. Not a
single person in line in front of me. They had a great band playing and they
gave out the race awards during a break in the music. Since many of the half
marathoners had long since left the scene it was far from the usual post
race mad house but there were certainly plenty of marathoners around
enjoying the festivities. Without looking at the color of their bids I could
tell then ran the full by their limps. :)

I almost forgot to mention that the race fee included a long sleeve
technical shirt and a finishers long sleeve zippered hoodie sweatshirt, not
bad for $75.

As you can tell, I highly recommend this race for a fall marathon. This 2nd
year they increased the total field from 3,000 to 5,000 although the number
of marathon finishers stay the same at around 650 and it sold out a few days
prior to the race. I think it's going to continue to grow and get a
reputation as one of the best marathons in California but only time will
tell.

I left Fresno at 2pm and pulled into my driveway at 6:45 just in time to go
out to dinner and celebrate. Run Fresno, you'll like it but remember you
heard it from me first.

11/7/09, Novemberfest!
Time: Meet at 7:45 AM, start at 8:00 AM
Leader: Rob Harris
Location: Rob’s house: 24801 Via Princesa, Lake Forest
Directions: PCH, West on Marguerite, until it dead-ends on Ocean Blvd.
About the Run: Come back to the scene of the Oktoberfest in November!
This week’s run startsat the Harris residence and proceeds along the
Serrano Creek Trail up to Whiting Ranch Wilderness Park. The run is
uphill on the way out and, of course, downhill on the way back. The
route is on dirt "fire roads" and can be any distance up to around 17
miles depending on how deep into Whiting Ranch Park you want to go.
The first 4.5miles are out and back so you can run any distance you
like. There will be maps at the start.
After the Run: Rob will have bagels and cream cheese, fruit, water and
coffee on the patio after the run.

11/14/09, Quail Hill
Time: Meet at 7:45. Start at 8:00.
Leader: Matt Hood
Location: Starbucks – Corner of Alton & E. Yale Loop, Irvine (same
location as Turtle Rock ‘N Java run)
Directions: From 405 Fwy, exit Jeffrey and go North 2 lights to
Alton. Turn Left and then Right into parking lot. Starbucks is
between Ralphs and Sav-On.
About the Run: We will take the “new and improved” route out
Jeffrey and across the freeway over the Jeffrey bridge. Run along the
path until we get to the Quail Hill Trail. The trail has both dirt
and paved options as it climbs up into new exclusive portion of Turtle
Rock. Head down Bonita Canyon and make a loop back to the start. You
can also do an out and back along the trail. There is water on the
trail but it is recommended to bring some since it can be warm.
After the Run: Starbucks, Big City Bagels, and Juice It Up.

11/21/09, Ship to Rail
Time: Meet at 7:45 AM, start at 8:00 AM
Leader: Sabrina Higashi
Location: Dana Point Ocean Institute
Directions: From PCH in Dana Point, turn onto Golden Lantern toward
the ocean. At the bottom of the hill, turn right on Dana Point Harbor
Drive and follow it until it dead ends at the Ocean Institute. Parking
is all around. We'll meet at the end of DPH Drive, near the "Pilgrim"
sailing ship and the little pier in Dana Point Harbor.
About the Run: This is an out and back flat run that will cover a
portion of the "Turkey Trot" course. First turnaround point is at the
end of the parking lot just past the San Clemente Metrolink Station.
Total distance is about 10.6 miles. Shorter optionsare available. For
a 12.8 mile run, continue running along the footpath to the next
turnaround point, the San Clemente Pier. For those of you needing a
little more mileage, you can add on 2 or 4 more miles by including the
island in the harbor. If you’re doing a 20-miler, you could continue
along the path that goes beyond the San Clemente Pier then turnaround
when necessary. Bring water, although several drinking fountains are
located along the way. Lots of restrooms!
After the Run: Lots of breakfast options at the harbor…

11/28/09, Glenn Ranch
Time: Meet at 7:45. Start at 8:00.
Leader: Greg Hanssen
Location: Meet at L.A. Fitness at the corner of Portola and El Toro
Road in Lake Forest.
Directions: Take the El Toro exit off the 5 and head toward the
hills. Portola is about 5-6 miles up.
About the Run: The run is a loop headed toward Glenn Ranch and into
the foothills. Wonderful hill training or recovery from the Turkey
Trot!
After the Run: Coffee shop in the same shopping center.

I'm planning to attend this friday's PAC 10 Championship meet to be held at
the Sky Links Country Club in Long Beach on Oct 30. The men's race is at 3pm
and women race at 4pm.
The races will feature the Oregon men's team, rated #1 in the country and
the Washington women's team rated #1. I have no idea why they're racing in
Long Beach. Too bad they couldn't hold this event on a weekend. I plan to
leave my office, near John Wayne Airport around 1:30 to allow for traffic.
Let me know if you'd like to join me for festivities. I'd guess that there
will be close to a dozen future olympians in the combined races.

Great times by all. Laura had me fooled because I thought Sheri was injured
since I see her mntn biking all the time.

Unbelievable time by Sue a week after her sub 2:53 marathon at St. George.
