Football 1863-1888 - an ongoing project   Message List
Reply | Forward Message #379 of 415 |
Over the years I've (slowly) been building a database of all games played under
association rules between 1863 and 1888. The prime objective is to publish all
FA Cup results, scorers and line-ups for the seasons up to 1887/88. However,
because of typesetter errors and other problems with the sources used, I decided
that it was best to build the database to include every match played from
December 1863, when the first set of FA rules were published.

As you know, there are many difficulties in deciding 'whose rules' were being
followed in some many of the games, particularly in the period 1863-1870. Match
reports often help identify whether it was an "association" or a "rugby" game.
Also, clubs would usually favour one rule or the other, apart from some
well-known cases where they played both codes.

Over the next few weeks or months I will post all the match details on the
'database' section of this user group. If I have set it up correctly, you will
be able to add details to the database that I may have missed. Such additions
will be most welcome.

We are only allowed 10 fields, of which I have already used 9. Suggestions for
the tenth will be gratefully received.

Regards, Tony
