Re: [soccerdatauk] Subsitute Firsts

Dear all,

the first sub used was BA Nicholls who replaced D Saunders after 65 minutes of the game between London XI and Basel XI on 4 June 1955 in the Inter Cities Fairs Cup. Subs were used throughout this competition, but in the following edition were much more limited. By 1960-61 they were used infrequently and generally only for goalkeepers.

They disappeared entirely until November 1966 when goalkeeping subs were permitted again, then finally in September 1967 they were introduced for outfield players again.

In the European Champions Cup the first sub was V Majerovic for G Irovic (in goal) after 75 mins of the match between VTJ Dukla Praha and NK Dinamo Zagreb on 1 October 1958 (for Zagreb), followed 5 minutes later by the first outfield sub, Banozic for I Santek (again for Zagreb). There were a couple more subs in this competition, but they were then dropped until September 1966, when goalkepping subs were permitted. Subs in general were used from Septemer 1968 onwards.

The Cup Winners Cup followed a similar pattern. There was sporadic use of goalkeeping subs from October 1966 onwards, and general subs were used from Setember 1968 ownwards.

I've numerous publications from this era and have compiled all line ups for all UEFA matches, so feel quite confident this should be accurate.

Hope this helps

Regards

Graeme

Substitute goalkeepers were allowed only in the European Cup/Champions League for Season 1967-68 and Jimmy Rimmer was the substitute for Manchester United in the Final against Benfica but don't know who the Benfica one was.The following Season general substitutes were used and believe it was 3 and Ajax used 2 inthe Final,

Cup Winners Cup believe it was 1968-69 Season for general substitutes but don;t know whether Substitute Goalkeepers were allowed in 67-68.

Fairs Cup allowed Substritutes from Season 1967-68 as Leeds used 2 and Ferencvaros 1 in 1st Leg of Final.

Feel sure this is correct unless someone knows different.

Regards

Geoff

Does any one know when substitutes were first used in European Club competitions (i.e. European Cup, Cup Winners Cup, UEFA Cup or Fairs Cup)?

Many thanks in advance

Steve
