Re: [soccer_atlanta] Re: Soccer at Iverson Park, Sept 29
Do the "locals" even have a say about us using the field? It was my impression that it is owned by the city and we have just as much right to use it as they do. It seems to me that they don't have to know that we have a website and mailing list, for all they know we just use word of mouth and agree to show up. That's how most pickup groups are, anyways. Paying that much doesn't sound like a great idea to me either considering there are plenty of parks around, and most of them should be finished being renovated by now. I found out the one in my neighborhood (Shadey Valley Park) hosts a kids league on Sat mornings, though, so I guess I'm stuck driving all the way over there to play with you guys :)
Technically, the city would be justified in requiring us to reserve the
space, since, despite the "casual" in our title, we are an organized
group: with Web site and having met regularly for three years now. But
I'm not sure we have the organizational wherewithal to pay $50 each
weekend ($2,600/year). We would need to have 20 regular members
contribute $130 per year, or 25 members contribute $104, and so on.
I think we're all right at Iverson unless locals object -- there have
been queries from some on the block concerned that our cleats would
harm the new grass. Also, our presence might be dissuading locals from
bringing their kids to the small playset on Saturday mornings.
(Personally, I don't think we are that intimidating a collective.)
If kickballers and Ultimate players discover Iverson, of course, once
again we would be displaced.
Other ideas always welcome.
