olly,
the rest of the story that was cut off
was just about how i became a fantastic human luge
when i tripped running full steam down a trail that
had been butchered by mountain bikes. as i lay dusty,
bleeding and pissed off, the only humans around offered
help. 3 mountain bikers. "lady, lady are yo ok?" i'm
sure i was older than their grandmothers and must have
made quite a sight. i declined their kind offers and
took advantage of the adrenline rush to push on down
the trail.

about your training, you sound like
you just need to do it. there are many people who are
MUCH better qualified to give you pointers but from my
brief experience, sign up for an ultra (50k), take
along a picnic lunch, lots of water, succeed caps, a
hat, sunscreen ,sports slick for your feet and
optional equipment like a cell phone and camera. then,
start out slow and as the saying goes, slow down from
there and just enjoy the ride and don't worry about
anything. walk the up hills (power walk as they say) and do
the best you can to shuffle down the hills and flats.
at the end of the run you should be in good spirits,
have plenty left and the next time, you'll be able to
judge how you can modify your performance to suit
yourself. good luck! bridget
