In the email below, notes from the CDS Board meeting held July 30 in San Jose.
----- Original Message -----
Sent: Thursday, August 02, 2007 2:45 PM
Subject: CDS

Dear CDS members:

I would like to offer my personal thank you to all who took time from their already busy schedules to offer suggestions, options, opinions and advice to this Executive Board by either an email, phone call or by attending the meeting.  Please do not hesitate to continue this open line of communication.

Below is an update on the July 30, 2007 Executive Board meeting held in San Jose where the following motions were presented.

Notice of Intent to Offer Motions to Rescind:

At a prior meeting, this Board considered and adopted a motion to withdraw CDS recognition for non-chapter sponsored shows.  This is notice to all members of the CDS Board of Directors that, at the next regular or adjourned meeting, I intend to offer the following motion to rescind:  Move that this Board rescind the previous action to withdraw CDS recognition for non-chapter sponsored shows.

This motion was amended to read "Move to allow Chapters to have priority for show dates until September 30 of each year and that after that date non-chapter shows may be accepted."  This motion was approved..  Date protection will not roll over automatically each year as to allow Chapters continued priority over private managers.

Further, at a prior meeting, this Board considered and adopted a motion to extend, without an invitation to bid, the current show management contract through the 2008 CDS annual show.  This is notice to all members of the CDS Board of Directors that, at the next regular or adjourned meeting, I intend to offer the following motion to rescind:  Move that this Board rescind the action to extend the current show management contract through the 2008 CDS annual show.

This motion was amended to read "Move that this Board direct the Show Committee to develop and present to this Board by November 2007 a draft Request for Proposal for show management and facilities for annual show starting in 2009." This motion was approved. Glenda McElroy will continue as the 2008 show manager for the CDS Championship show at LAEC.  The Show Committee will start work on creating an RFP (Request for Proposal) to present to the Board for the November Board meeting.

The next Executive Board meeting will be held September 23,2007 in San Jose at the Holiday Inn.  All members are invited.

Sincerely,
Carol Tice, President

Dear members,

PLEASE take a moment to reply to Maureen. I hate to be imploring but after everyone was in an uproar about location for the Championships we are really starting to feel like this is our opportunity to provide input to the CDS Board. They asked for it so please take a moment and send an email. Joan has done a great job explaining the background on the issues and if you have questions, we will try to answer them.

The deadline to reply is now. The meeting is Monday morning.

Thanks everyone. Maybe we can effect a change for the Northern Championships venue for 2009. If they're listening and if we're lucky!

Dear members.

The issues have been distorted by Maureen.

There are a majority of Board members who would like to put management out to bid.  Current management can bid too.  So, there may or may not be a change in management.  The bid would be awarded to the best bid, not necessarily the lowest bid.

That same majority want to look at whether the move to Woodside is successful in 2007, before committing to move the northern show in 2009 or 2011.   Most of the six are skeptical that Woodside will be received well by the membership, so they are thinking ahead about the options.

If a change in management results in the inability to go to one location or another, for example if LAEC refuses to take a reservation from CDS if someone other than Cornerstone is managing the show, in a show of “loyalty” to Glenda, then new facilities would be explored for the south.  If that means CDS finds a good neutral central site and proposes going there every year, that might be one solution.   There are many solutions to be discussed depending on a lot of variables.

The point is that it is time to conduct CDS business like a business and go to bid and explore all the options.  Joan

Dear CDS member:

There are some issues coming up at the next CDS Board meeting:
Monday, July 30 at the Holiday Inn,
1740 N. First Street, San Jose,
11:00AM - 6:00PM
which could have a long lasting impact on the CDS Championship Show, especially in the southern part of the state.

I was the last volunteer manager, and since 1991 Glenda McElroy , Cornerstone Event Management, has run the show.  The show has gotten better and better and usually shows a financial surplus. However, at the moment there is a group of Directors on the Board who would like to see the management of the show change, and then possibly have the show rotate between Murieta and Pebble Beach, or perhaps remain at one facility, possibly Pebble Beach.

If you have opinions about the future of our Championship show, please e-mail me or fax me with your views. Some questions:

I prefer to have two shows - one north and one south -           yes __  no __

Hello all, we had a very sucessfull 3 day clinic with Steve K and there was lots of interest in another for September. I've just spoken with him and the only dates he can come, that work at all with what's happening here and in my life are the 29th, 30th and Oct 1st.

We have some commitments already from previous riders so let me know asap if you want to ride that weekend and if so how many days and if you have any time constraints.  If we get enough interest we will do a 3 day again...otherwise it will be the usual Sunday-Monday.  I always do my best to keep the cost down....seems klike the magic number lately has been 125/ride...it depends on airfaire....

Thanx, Carolyn

Whoever wins the management bid for shows will be directed by the CDS Board as to where the show will be, north or south.  The management works at the direction of the Show Committee which is chaired by a Board member.

In my opinion, the suggestion that the 2008 show might not be in southern California is made in order to “fire up” a reaction.  There is otherwise nothing to link putting the management contract out to bid to moving the show from southern California.  Joan

I have been asked by a number of members who have responded to my first email for clarification as to the nature of the items listed on the agenda for this upcoming Board meeting.  On Monday, July 24, 2007 the CDS Office received the following request to have items added to our agenda.  This request was made by Director Laurie Farmer on behalf of herself and five other Directors.

The first item regarding CDS recognition for non-chapter shows was adopted at our February Board meeting by all Directors.  This was done as a safe guard for our Chapters to have the opportunity to secure dates for their single rated shows and not be eliminated from producing income for their Chapter if their desired date was held by a private show manager.  There has been mixed feelings on this decision up and down the state and since it will be revisited at this board meeting it would be of great help to know the membership's thoughts.

The second item concerns our 2008 Annual Show.  The current managers contract was from 2005 to 2007 but, since we are still working on a format for inviting bids for the next contract, all Directors voted to extend the current managers contract for one additional year.  Since the manager is local in the south and the 2008 Annual Show was to take place at LAEC it was a logical action and vote. Traditionally our CDS Championship show rotates between north and south locations to accommodate all of our membership.  If the current manager's contract is canceled the show may not be held in Southern California.

In that, as Directors of CDS, we are to implement what is best for the organization and it's membership, I again invite you to either attend this meeting or reply by email or fax with comments and concerns.

Sincerely,

Is it possible to find out where they want to move the Championships from the south to and why? There has been some grumbling about moving the Northern Champs to Woodside from Rancho so im curious as to this new information about moving the Champs in the south. Is there a trend happening? Are they looking to make one central location that will be the same every year so there is no north and south rotation?

Thank you for letting everyone in on this,

Dear SNC-CDS members- I have some familiarity with the issues being presented at the Board meeting.

I know of no move to move the Championships from LAEC, unless politics interfere.  The issue being presented is whether to actually put the management of the Championship show out to bid.  If it goes out to bid that may or may not mean a change in management or a change in location.

If current management, Cornerstone, loses the contract to manage, there is no reason the show could not be at LAEC which,  unless Cornerstone asks LAEC not to give a date to CDS. LAEC admits a “loyalty” to Cornerstone.   I don’t know why Cornerstone would do that, however.  It would be pretty petty and so obviously sour grapes.

There is a move to rethink the Board action to no longer sanction single star shows, except to chapters.   Personally, I don’t know why the CDS board voted to do that in the first place.  The more people putting on shows, the less burden on the chapter volunteers and the more money for CDS.

I urge you NOT to send your comments to the Central Office, but rather to email them to a Director that you know.  The Director’s email addresses are in the front of the Omnibus and Roster.  Liz Lewis’ has changed to wyvern@... and Bobby Keville’s has changed to (Kevilles@...).  Otherwise, the addresses are correct.  Most of you know Bobbie Keville or Mary Schrader (maryschrader227@...).

The CDS Executive Board meeting to be held on Monday, July 30 will have on the agenda items that can greatly impact YOU the whole CDS organization.

One will possibly cause the 2008 Annual Championship show to be moved from the southern location along with change in management. The other will deal with the single rated CDS show recognition and how CDS will support the Chapters.

Your input on how CDS should proceed on these subjects is greatly needed and wanted.  If you are able to attend, the meeting will be held from 11:00 AM to 6 PM.  If you are not able to attend, but would like to comment on how the Board should vote, please send your comments to Paula in the Central Office no later than this Saturday via email of paula@... or fax to (831) 659-2383.  If you need more information, please feel free to call or email me.

Here was my response to Paula.

I encourage everyone to repond at least on Item 1. We need those non-chapter
shows.

1.At a prior meeting, this Board considered and adopted a motion to withdraw CDS
recognition for non-chapter sponsored shows. This is notice to all members of
the CDS Board of Directors that, at the next regular or adjourned meeting, I
intend to offer the following motion to rescind: Move that this Board rescind
the previous action to withdraw CDS recognition for non-chapter sponsored shows.

RESPONSE: I support this being rescinded. Non-chapter shows deserve to be on
equal footing with chapter shows. Individuals should be encouraged to hold CDS
shows not discouraged.

2.Further, at a prior meeting, this Board considered and adopted a motion to
extend, without an invitation to bid, the current show management contract
through the 2008 CDS annual show. This is notice to all members of the CDS
Board of Directors that, at the next regular or adjourned meeting, I intend to
offer the following motion to rescind: Move that this Board rescind the action
to extend the current show management contract through the 2008 CDS annual show.

Response: Why was the board not ready to commence the bid process in a timely
manner for the 2008 show?
I think it is in the best interest of the membership to ensure the show
continues it North / South rotation however I do not believe a contract should
simply be extended as the board was not ready for the bid process.
The board should do what is necessary to complete the bid process with the
stipulation for the show to be held at LAEC in 2008.
Those not able to meet the requirment will not be able to win the bid.

Regards
Lesley Grove

existing contract is severed, the CDS board should go out to bid for a new Champ
show manager.

worthy host or that the location can draw competitors from out of its immediate
area and be financially successful.

Dear SNC membership,
You have all seen the emails that have been buzzing around since Wednesday night about the up coming CDS Board meeting and asking for our input on several agenda items. I thought I would share with you my response to Paula, the CDS office manager (the original email requested that feedback be directed to Paula rather than to the CDS Board itself); it is in the email below.

Hi Paula,
I wish I were in the position to attend the meeting but San Jose is a haul from Reno. Here is some feedback to your email.
1. CDS recognition of non-chapter shows: I would like to see * CDS non-chapter shows be allowed to continue. In our northern NV region of CDS, we need to allow for these non-chapter shows to continue as an economic option for our membership to compete and in many cases, qualify for the various CDS championships, without traveling extensive miles to do so. The existing 100 mile rule is effective in keeping the shows from diluting entries.

This particular agenda item appears to be "out of our area" geographically-based and negatively impacts the CDS northern NV membership.

2) Move the 2008 CDS Champ show to a new venue: There has not been enough information disseminated for anyone outside of the CDS office or CDS board to have an opinion on this agenda item. Generally speaking, these types of decisions are financially driven.

3) 2008 CDS Champ Show Management: Again, there has not been enough information disseminated for anyone outside of the CDS office or CDS board to have an opinion on this agenda item. And again, generally speaking, these types of decisions are financially driven. I assume there is an existing contract with a penalty attached for the breakage of said contract. Legal council, with the input of the CDS Board, will be required to break an existing contract. If the existing contract is severed, the CDS board should go out to bid for a new Champ show manager.

4) CDS "supporting" the chapters: I believe this is the Sonora Chapter item where they wanted a kick back from the CDS membership enrollment with every member assigned to the specific chapter. This is a chapter item, not a CDS global issue. Chapters are expected to run under GAP, (general accounting principles) and can request assistance from the CDS office is instruction in financial management is required.

One item that is not on the agenda that should be out for discussion is the extension of the contract with the Woodside facility to 2009 and 2011. I am appalled that CDS has gotten itself into a contractual agreement with a facility for two additional years and the facility has not yet proven itself to be a worthy host or that the location can draw competitors from out of its immediate area and be financially successful.

Another item that should be discussed is the creation of a hard copy Jr Championship show program in the year 2007. Why does CDS absorb so much expense creating and mailing such a beast when the rest of the organization successfully uses the omnibus and individual websites to post show premiums, show entries, ride times, and results? It's time to severe that dinosaur from the food bank. The Jr Champs runs in the red, certainly this is an expense item whose time has passed...

Thank you for the opportunity to express my opinions on these CDS agenda items,
Elizabeth Coffey-Curle
SNC-CDS Chairperson

The CDS Executive Board meeting to be held on Monday, July 30 will have on the agenda items that can greatly impact YOU the whole CDS organization.

One will possibly cause the 2008 Annual Championship show to be moved from the southern location along with change in management. The other will deal with the single rated CDS show recognition and how CDS will support the Chapters.

Subject: Re: CDS

I have been asked by a number of members who have responded to my first email for clarification as to the nature of the items listed on the agenda for this upcoming Board meeting.  On Monday, July 24, 2007 the CDS Office received the following request to have items added to our agenda.  This request was made by Director Laurie Farmer on behalf of herself and five other Directors.

Sincerely,

Paula,

Is it possible to find out where they want to move the Championships from the south to and why? There has been some grumbling about moving the Northern Champs to Woodside from Rancho so im curious as to this new information about moving the Champs in the south. Is there a trend happening? Are they looking to make one central location that will be the same every year so there is no north and south rotation?

Thank you for letting everyone in on this,
Michele

Dear Friends of Dressage,

Dressage in the Sierra is one of the premier shows of the California Dressage Society’s circuit. This annual event draws competitors from throughout the region to ride under internationally rated judges. As one of the top equestrian events in Nevada, it offers a perfect venue to showcase Reno area businesses and products to serious equestrians.

Our organization, the Sierra Nevada Chapter of the California Dressage Society, is affiliated with the United States Dressage Federation. It is a volunteer group whose members spend countless hours working to ensure the quality of this event. Each year, its success depends on the support and patronage of our community. Sponsorships from chapter members, their families and friends, and local professionals and businesses are essential to maintaining the show’s tradition of excellence.

Each sponsorship, from the smallest to the largest, is greatly appreciated. Please take a moment to look at the attached list of sponsorship opportunities and select the one that best meets your needs. Your support will be recognized in event materials, mailings, and the chapter newsletter, as well as at the show. Funds raised help us to attract top-notch competitors through prizes, cash awards, trophies and first-rate facilities.

For additional information about sponsorships, please contact Victoria Myer 775-378-7403 or Beth Curle 775-849-0136. If you are unable to be a sponsor at this time, please consider helping us secure a donation or a prize suitable for an award. Your involvement ensures that we can continue to showcase the art of dressage in northern Nevada.

Thank you for your generosity,

Members of the Sierra Nevada Chapter, California Dressage Society

Hello everyone,

Just a quick reminder... as you're filling out your Dressage in the Sierra entry
forms... Please use separate entries for DITS I (Friday) and DITS II (Saturday &
Sunday). The entry forms have been marked with Dressage in the Sierra I and
Dressage in the Sierra II at the top so be sure you're filling out the
appropriate form. Please write separate checks and provide separate copies of
your cards for each show.

Fill out the Horse, Rider, Owner, Trainer and Coach information completely.
Write in your numbers for USDF, USEF and CDS for each section. If there is a
field that does not apply (such as passport no.) write "n/a" in. Double check
your class entries for each day as well as your class fee totals.

Be sure to include the mandatory fees as they are listed on the entry form.
Franktown charges us a $10/horse/RIDE fee. The chapter has no control over this
fee as it comes directly from the facility.

Double check your totals and include payment with your entry and finally, sign
everything.

We apologize for continually nagging on this subject but the vast majority of
our entries are still coming in incomplete.

Thank you everyone for you attention to this.
