Just a reminder that there are only a few weeks left to register for Skate
Boston at the reduced rate! Registration fees and the hotel rate increase after
June 17, 2009!

We still have rooms available for $139/night (double occupancy) at our host
hotel, the Holiday Inn Express and Suites in Cambridge, MA. It will be hard to
find a better rate in the Boston area during the summer travel season!

We have also updated our website: www.skate-boston.net. Check out the weekend
schedule for details on skate routes and nightly social events. We will be
hosting a dinner on Saturday night at the Cambridge Brewing Company--don't
forget to sign up separately for this option when you register!

We hope to see some new faces from out of town this year--we would love to show
you our city!

Please send any questions to director@....

Skaters,

Tomorrows In-line training at RIT is canceled due to the holiday weekend and
number of people being away.

Practices will resume the following Saturday.

Weather depending I may hit the canal path tomorrow mid-morning to work off the
excess caloric intake of the 4th. If anyone else is planning a quick canal side
skate please put it out to the group. The more the merrier!

Have a safe and enjoyable holiday.

Hi Skaters,

I'm not sure if this group email is still up and runnig but thought I'd give it
a try.

Memebers of the Rochester Speed Skating team are meeting 8 am Saturday Mornings
in the first parking lot just west of the Lomb Drive enterance to RIT, off
Jefferson. We warm up in the parking lot then skate the half mile loop
that is Lomb Dr. Flat, smooth and one way traffic utililzing two
lanes. We skate on the inner lane so traffic is not a problem.
Saturday morning traffic is at a minimum and we only had a couple cars pass us
in the outer lane the hour we were skating the loop.

The team members typically train for 45-60 minutes then we go back to the
parking lot 100 yds away to free skate for a while, through cones,
practice cross-overs, and work on our double push.

We would like to invite all in-line skaters interested, to join us on Saturday
mornings. All skaters are welcome to join our workouts or just free skate
the loop and hang out. The speed skaters skate classic style for our
workouts, to mimic on ice technique, then double push after "official training"
is complete.

Some of our skaters wear recreational skates, the majority wear speed
skates. There are a variety of skating abilities and we group skaters
based on ability. We ask all skaters to wear a helmut as minimum protective
gear. The speed skaters can easily be skating 25-30 MPH when
sprinting. We generally cruise ~15-20 MPH. Safety is a
priority.

Suggested items to bring; sun screen, water, towel, chair (easier to
put on skates), sun glasses, & snacks. We have a fully stocked
first aid kit and AED, not that we've ever had to use an AED, but we have
one non the less.

Anyone can check out our team schedule at the following link:

www.rochesterspeedskating.org

I can also be contacted via this email or on my cell 748-8684. Hope to see
you all out skating this summer.

Would anyone like to go Saturday 8am for Brock's Monument and make
the http://tbn.ca/inline/ skates? The mid-September weather for
Saturday looks great so far.

Hope to see you this evening at Genesee Valley Park!
John

  > from Mike Lin about TBN Niagara Skate this Saturday:

INLINE SKATING: NIAGARA GORGE SKATE
Join us for the scenic Niagara Gorge skate. This is a level 15km
round trip skate starting in the park at Queenston Heights (near
Brock's Monument) and skating south past the Floral Clock, Power
Plant, Horticultural Park and the Whirlpool then back again. Unlike
prior years, we will not be skating the hill at Queenston. The
pavement is generally good and there are a few road crossings. Apres
to be determined but will be in the Queenston area. After the apres
some of us may do an additional skate (unofficial) along the lower
Niagara River between NOTL and Queenston.

Distance / Class: 15 km (shorter/slower) + unofficial afternoon skate
TBD
Time: Meet 10:00am, depart 10:15am
Directions: QEW (Niagara), exit Hwy 405 (exit left just past St.
Catherines Skyway) east, exit Niagara Parkway (last exit before
bridge to USA) and turn left (north) on Niagara Parkway then keep
left and enter Queenston Heights Park (Brock's Monument). We will
meet in the parking lot at 10:00am. If you have any questions or need
a ride email us atinline@... or call leader Randy at 416-565-7920.
Après: TBD, in the Queenston area.
Notes: If the weather is a concern, call the TBN hotline
416-760-4191, line 4, after 7:30 a.m. to confirm whether the skate
will take place. We will try to re-schedule Sunday September 23 if
Saturday is not good. Helmet and wrist guards are mandatory, knee and
elbow pads strongly recommended. Bring water and a snack.

Last week Bill Delgado from Twinsburg OH wrote us to say he wanted to
take time out from a week-long print conference at RIT to skate with
us. Yesterday he did. In addition, Don returned from London for a
working visit and a skate and brought another friend we met in Philly
but originally from Buffalo. In all, the seven of us had a superb
skate! Bill wrote the following message for me to forward.

Sunday if showers hold off, i hope to see y'all skate the last Inner
Loop 8am-2pm, and then from Seneca Park Zoo 6pm that evening!

Skaters! Sunday marks our ninth consecutive year of skating the
Onondaga Parkway, the Onondaga Lake Park Trail, and downtown
Syracuse. Be sure to join us 7:30am Sunday from the Park & Ride near
St John Fisher if you'd like to carpool. Details, of course, are on
our calendar at our website.

Also Fairportans (Fairportians, Fairportons, Fairportites,
Fairporters… :-)

The weather looks good so far for our first skate today from Perinton
Community Park not to be rained out. I hope you can join us 6:30p. A
somewhat beginner wrote us and might also join up. Also, here's a
shout out to Don Miller, who's back visiting from the United Kingdom!

Skaters,

In case you hadn't already read, Mayor Duffy inaugurates a new round
of Sunday skating, cycling, and jogging opportunities. Tomorrow
morning through 2pm, and for several Sundays, the Inner Loop closes
to motor vehicles and opens for everyone else. I plan to go about
10am and can watch for you if you let me know.

Of course, tomorrow evening 6pm we skate from Pittsford Library to
wherever people want to go, our regular biweekly fitness and rec' skate.

Then Tuesday 6:30p we skate through Brighton neighborhoods along
Westfall. Jim says he's found a decent route and seems excited to
show us. Then afterward we head back to his place for a cookout and
potluck. The forecast looks better than it did for the past two
postponements. For details, first either join Upcoming Skate or
friend me.

See everyone out skating!

Just in case you hadn't a chance to visit http://skateRiSC.com yet,
be sure to join us Sunday 6pm for a skate in Brighton neighborhoods,
along the Canal Trail perhaps to Schoen Place, and then back to

Hi All,

Here's my take on the subject of "Hemet vs No Helmet."

As a critical care nurse in the Burn/Trauma ICU at Strong Hospital for the past
11 years I have personally worked on two inline skaters both of which suffered
fatal head injuries due to falls. Both skaters were not wearing helmets and
both ended up organ donors.

I also fell while skating in the Ontario Shore Marathon a few years back and
broke five bones in my face and flattened a portion of the right side of my
helmet. Had I not had a helmet I would have certainly sustained a head injury a
long with my broken face. I now wear a helmet with a jaw gaurd while skating or
riding my bike.

Wear a Helmet!

   Sincerely,

            tOm rOssBorOugH

I was riding my bike along Lakeshore. The town of Irondiquite Is installing

Helmet saves man when truck runs over his head
POSTED: 5:06 p.m. EDT, May 15, 2007

MILWAUKEE, Wisconsin (AP) -- Ryan Lipscomb lived to tell how it felt
to have a truck run over his head. "Really strange," he said.

Lipscomb, 26 of Seattle, suffered a concussion but was otherwise
unhurt. He was shaken up, especially after he saw his mangled helmet.

Lipscomb, a graduate student in medical physics at the University of
Wisconsin-Madison, was riding down a bike path in Madison on Friday
afternoon. As he approached an intersection, he said, he noticed the
oncoming delivery truck preparing to make a right turn in front of him.

The truck wasn't going to stop, Lipscomb said, so he slammed on his
brakes, flipping his bike and landing in the street.

A moment later the truck rolled over his head.

"I didn't see it coming, but I sure felt it roll over my head," he
told The Capital Times newspaper. "It feels really strange to have a
truck run over your head."

His black helmet was flattened, tread marks visible on the cracked frame.

Lipscomb was taken to a hospital and released about three hours later.

Police initially declined to call the incident a hit-and-run, saying
it was unclear whether the driver knew someone had been hit. But Sgt.
Bernie Gonzalez later updated the accident report to include the
designation.

Police spokesman Mike Hanson said Tuesday there hasn't been an arrest
because investigators haven't been able to identity the driver.

In a telephone interview Tuesday with The Associated Press, Lipscomb
said he has had some lingering headaches and a stiff neck.

"All things considered, that's about as good as it can get," he said.

Despite the close call, he said, he has to focus on school because his
qualifying exam for the Ph.D. program is next week.

"I think it will probably hit me when I'm done with exams," Lipscomb said.

Lipscomb does plan to ride again, he just prefers to wait until after
exams are over.

"After that, I'll go out and get a new helmet and be back on my bike,"
he said.

greetings skaters!

Spring is here, though it may not feel like it sometimes, and in four
week begins another season of skating! Let's gather to swap parts,
replace wheels, help each other do maintenance, and share ideas and
plan the season. In addition to coffee, tea, panini, and desserts,
Boulder Coffee has an outdoor patio next to hardtop parking.

If you plan to skate this season, please rsvp, select a date to
gather, and answer the poll. Then by Saturday i can select a date for
the Evite and begin to program our calendar.

____________________________

The Rest of the Story:

If you're not familiar with Athens-to-Atlanta: it's a road skate in
Atlanta every autumn… with 38, 52.4 & 87 mile options – good friends,
great camaraderie (and superb challenges and competition) – over miles
of Georgia's hilly countryside as well as very-urban Atlanta. This is
some of the best road skating anywhere, with skaters from all over the
world – from recreational/fitness to pro teams... anything goes,
mainly fun.

Skaters have included Chad Hedrick, Derek Downing, Eddy Matzger
(eight-time 87-mile winner) and Jono Gorman (current course record
holder for the 38-mile and 87-mile events, and now training for the
2010 Olympics in Milwaukee), three-time winner Kim Perkins, Barrie
Hartman – and thousands of others, from a nine-year old female winner
of the 38-mile, to skaters in their 70s that have completed the
87-mile event with very respectable finish times.

A2A may be adding some a shorter distances to the event next year:
we'll keep everyone posted – watch the website at http://a2a.net … or
stay tuned to the new MySpace pages or YahooGroup.

We have some great videos online on the MySpace page – with more to
come (we'd love your suggestions): vids include A2A, skate training,
mayhem, plus cool/beautiful stuff.

Thanks – and hope you enjoy!

Happy skating, and Happy Holidays -

NEWS01/610220325

Next year Greece joins other local districts including Spencerport,
East Rochester and Fairport in banning skateboarding— ‘the new
soccer’ by popularity. Officials say they want to avoid liability,
the same reason schools ban roller skates, inline skates and
‘heelies’, but ‘according to a 2002 study by the Center for Injury
Research and Prevention at the Children's Hospital of Philadelphia,
about 9 of every 1000 skateboarders are treated in emergency rooms
each year for sport-related injuries, compared to 21 per 1000 for
both football and basketball players!’ —D&C

As a local story, but part of the national and international skate
and board scene, this merits a blog post. If you have any direct
experience, or would like to contribute insight or opinion, please
reply. Thanks.

Hello fello in-liners,

I am wondering if anyone is interested in getting together after this Tuesday's
(8/15) skate.
Since this is a 'Zoo' skate, I am proposing that we meet at Hooligans afterward
say around 8:30 (PM).
Let me know if you can make it. This will be my last RISC related event for a
while,
as I will be moving next week.

- Don :)

P.S. I won't be attending the skate as I have 'ever-so' slightly sprained my
knee and need to stay to
stay off my skates for a few weeks. :(
