In today's abundant warmth and fair skies, has anyone even the
slightest inclination to hop in the car and get ourselves to Liverpool
and Onondaga Lake Park, maybe about 2pm, skate one loop or so during
daylight, get some refreshments or a small bite, then join up with Mike
for Lights on the Lake?

It sounds fun. I've got some ISO 800 film I'd like to shoot. Carpool
from Mid-town Athletic?

Somebody mentioned today (Sunday) should be warmer than yesterday.
Andrew and I need either to brace ourselves before moving to Nunavut to
escape New York taxes, or to prepare for a winter of skiing by skating
cold but sunny days, thus… 3pm from here in the Wedge.

Unadvertised deals! Saturday, November 22, 9am-1pm, the Honeoye
Falls-Lima Schools Nordic ski teams host their annual fund-raising swap
& sale. Last year brought major catalogue dealers Reliable Racing
(www.ReliableRacing.com/wintersportscatalog/retail.cfm ) from Glens
Falls and High Peaks (http://hpmac.com ) from Lake Placid, in addition
to Snow Country. Their coach even mounts your bindings for you,
seriously. Last year I replaced 15 year old skis and boots with the
newest gear, but at season close-out prices.

If any of the Syracuse or Rochester skaters would like to do the Disney
Marathon May 2nd, 2004, I am putting together a group discount. It
saves you $7 off the registration fee. Simply click on the following
link to print the form and mail it with your check to me at the address
shown at the bottom of this e-mail:

http://azinline.org/diswrldregformpage.html

The "group" or "team" you should put down on the form is "Arizona
Inline Skating Association." The Disney Marathon is expected to sell
out once again, so to prevent our group registrants from being closed
out, all forms must be received by Thanksgiving when they will all be
mailed together to Disney.

There is more information available at the event website which can be
accessed from: http://azinline.org/disneymarathon04.html

Hey Risc skaters,

Are there any group skates planned for this weekend?

I am going to be back in my hometown and would love to go for a Rochester
skate.

Please let me know or whom to contact. I already spoke with John Lam and he
didn't know of any planned skate but said because of the beautiful weather
that there may be some impromptu skates happening.

Please e-mail me at: krcouch@...

Thanks!

Their website indicates it is still Tuesday from 8-11pm... I will
call and verify that they are not changing the day/time... I am
going to get my skates refit and start doing Tuesday nights again
soon... Let me know if any of yo want to ride together...

On another related note... My old skate instructor used to teach
indoor speed skating. She was starting to work with me a little on
the techniques before I stopped in the spring (well a 1/4 lesson!;).
She had a group training for regional races (I think) a few years
ago. I wonder if we can do something as a group like that this year?
Basically it is a skate, that would maskerade as one of her
lessons... We probably would need a certain number of people to
probably to make it cost effective. I was paying 30$ for lessons for
both boys and myself for a 30 minute lesson and the ability to skate
an hour and a half, prior to the open skates on Sunday. So
basically, 2 hours of floor time for the three of us Sundays at 11am.
If she did not have to really teach us and she charged us about the
same, we could do it for pretty cheap with 8-10 people... When I did
it, we shared the floor with figure skaters in the middle...

Anyway, just a thought to keep the legs a-pumpin and the wheels
a-spinin, in the snow... No promises, but let me know if there is
any interest and I can talk to her and/or the mgmnt about the idea if
there is... If it does work out maybe we can enlist some of the
quad skaters and Spinner's regulars too...

maybe i'm in one of those sinistral funks, but feedback tells me i have
been misunderstood. i also have a strong sense i should shut up and not
disturb the gathering peace. therein lies my agony. in the shadows of
the gathering peace lurk murmurs of darkness, of ignorance, not voices
of light, of reason.

http://imf.org/external/pubs/ft/seminar/1999/reforms/fukuyama.htm

“Social capital” sounds nice and cozy, better than soul and spirit
grinding “economic capital.” Thinking that would be a mistake. Social
capital has different properties. For example, it cannot be saved,
invested, nor transferred. Reasoning about social capital for us is
more than academic. If we choose to ignore it, unlike religion or the
realm of ideas, it still exists, and our poor choices have negative
externalities on others.

The essence why skaters try us (or clubs in general) but not stay is
because they perceive themselves as outsiders relative to us. They feel
no connection with anyone, nor meaningfully participate. I cannot
always connect with everyone who visits, and sometimes it's even a
chore, but surely someone can.

Mainly, the processes I've tried to institute have been inclusive,
transparent, and collaborative; for example, suggesting certain
messages go onto our discussion list instead of solely amongst
ourselves, which at the archive allows latecomers to the discussion; or
creating *open registration* Evites to coordinate every dinner, lesson,
trip, race, or major event instead of making myself or designating
someone else coordinator, so participants can make arrangements for
themselves among themselves without multiple round-robins of mail.

“Before you make things inclusive and transparent, why don't you ask
the others,” voiced one insider. It's part human nature to protect our
influence, which for some with great rapport among themselves,
inclusiveness and transparency dilute. As an insider trying to check
those tendencies, sometimes I have succeeded and sometimes I have not.

Friends forging the greatest of friendships via skating meets no
objection at all; don't get me wrong. As the center of organized
skating in Rochester, we have a role beyond our personal friendships
and to our skating community. When we miss an opportunity, no others
have that opportunity either, and skating is worse for it. If we choose
to skate only for ourselves and current friends, we deny others the
opportunity to build something greater. Nor need we the recognition and
goodwill invested into our name.

these past days i have reread many of our old messages. little of my
gist here seems new. i've invested more social capital here than i
maybe ought have smartly or shrewdly done, and thus have more to lose.
although the maths linked above may seem opaque, they just echo and
amplify what you know in your heart.

John

Sorry if you get this message twice, I'm trying to get to everyone.

We're looking at changing the date of the end of year dinner so that
most people can come. If you will be coming, please read on.

Please respond (just to me, no need to fill everyone's mail) with
your choices of the following dates. It is ok, infact is best, to
vote for more than one (please rank them). Feel free to include
suggestions for the restaurant. I will tally the votes and send the
results to the list.

__TUE OCT 7 (the originally scheduled date)
__FRI OCT 10
__SAT OCT 11
__Tue OCT 14
__FRI OCT 17
__SAT OCT 18

Also, Since the weekend looks like a washout, I'll be skating from
GVP at 6:00 tonight if anyone is interested.

A great thanks to all those who made the trip to New York from far and near to
make the Big Apple Roll a tremendous success. We did our best to offer a wide
variety of New York City skating and from the responses we have received, I
think everyone was more than satisfied.

During the event we traveled over the most of the bridges in NYC including the
George Washington (GW), Queens Borough (59th Street), Poluski, Williamsberg,
Manhattan and Brooklyn Bridges. We traveled to the very northern point of NYC
to Fort Tryon Park and the very southern tip to Battery Park. We skated in
Queens and Brooklyn and touched New Jersey. In all from Friday through Sunday
we offered almost 100 miles of NYC street skating with the most ideal weather
mother nature could have blessed us with.

We are collecting pictures for our photo album of the event. I will post every
appropriate picture sent to us of the event. Please email me any pictures you
would like to include in our photo album. You may include an optional textual
description along with each picture that will be displayed with it. Please mail
pictures in the highest resolution you can to mailto:robert@...

The Big Apple Roll photo album may be viewed at:

The Big Apple Roll committee of the Empire Skate Club is enjoying a short
respite from the organizational responsibilities, but we will soon be back in

We hope to see all of you and new friends next year.

Hi Mary. Yes that hill is really something. I couldn't manage that hill
without a brake, but the branch between the legs sounds hilarious as I
try to picture how he pulled it off! It probably didn't look too
flattering. ;)

Sorry you showed up at Niagara on the Lake w/ no one there.

We were trying to find out earlier who was going and only 3 of us said
we were. And we gather at GVP parking lot then carpool from there. But
Saturday there was questionable weather reported for Niagara at the
time, so we thought it was best to just make it a regular local skate
instead. We skated the canal & back and also did Scottsville Rd. (Green
Beltway) - doing about the equivalent distance of the Niagara skate (20
miles).

The next skate's tomorrow weather permitting. Check out skaterisc.com
for location & details.

Hi,

I went to Niag Falls and tried to meet up with anyone - but I didn't
see anyone around the floral clock or on the path at 9:45. I did
skate out to Niag on the Lake and back with my boyfriend. It was
his first time skating and he took his dog, too! Plus, he was using
my son's skates and the brake was gone. We had a great time -
beautiful day. Sorry I missed you!

We skipped the big long hill just north of the Lewiston Bridge and
parked by the ice cream place along the path. We talked to another
skater with a little dog. He said the first time he went down that
long hill, he used a branch from a tree and put it between his legs
and used it for a break! What a hill!

Did anyone else skate?

Mary

If I get my car inspected (changed CA plates for NY)in time I will go
and drive. I'll be happy to carry up to 3 others. I'll know tomorrow.
In addition, I don't know where you meet. Any address near by so I
can look it up?

I'm definitely going. I can bring one in relative comfort , and two more in
relative discomfort (unless they're really short).

I'm also happy to catch a ride with someone else.

Since I didn't make it last time, and have always wanted to go, any chance on
hitting mighty taco again?

Bob

P.S. Thursday looks pretty nice. I'm going to skate the loop at the bottom of
the hill in seneca park (right at 6:00) and possibly head down lake ave (closer
to 6:15 or so) after if anyone is interested.

Who is planning on attending the skate?

I am on the fence since I have only skated like 2 times in the last month
and I have been a drive-thru whore for the last 2 weeks of chasing (and did
I mention meeting Dave himself?) the Dave Matthews Band.

ATTENTION ALL LAST-MINUTE FENCE-SITTERS… PROCRASTINATORS… AND COUCH
POTATOES…

Register TODAY before the DISCOUNTED Internet rate expires!

This is the FINAL CALL to get off your duffs and join all of us for one of the
nation’s MOST EXHILARATING SKATE WEEKENDS OF THE YEAR!!! (Whew… I’m getting
winded just thinking about it…)

The block of rooms at our official hotel ( www.skylinehotel.com ) has SOLD OUT…
with skaters coming from as far away as… New Jersey… and Connecticut! (Oh
yeah… also Germany, Canada, the Netherlands, Florida, etc.)

The WEEKEND WEATHER forecast is nothing short of SUPERB… how does SUNNY &
CLEAR, with HIGHS IN THE MID-70’s sound ??? We couldn’t have asked for more
perfect skate conditions (it kinda almost makes up for all those OTHER weekends
this year).

As for the SKATES… Well…

Ever roll across the BROOKLYN BRIDGE???

Okay… how about the GEORGE WASHINGTON BRIDGE???

Yes, that’s right… we’re offering TWO BRIDGES FOR THE PRICE OF ONE!!! (Lots of
New Yorkers will offer to sell you the Brooklyn Bridge… but only we go ALL OUT
to ensure that you get MORE than your fair share of great photo-ops...)

And did I mention the Saturday HUDSON RIVER skate to the CLOISTERS, complete
with PICNIC LUNCH??? What the #@*%! are the Cloisters? Well… you’ll just have
to skate there to find out!

Not to mention yet an entirely different PICNIC SKATE on Sunday… I’m
salivating just thinking about it… (Oooh… GROSS… let me wipe off this
keyboard…)

But what about APRÈS-SKATE?

Well… bring your bathing suits for the ROOFTOP POOL…

As well as your appetite for unquestionably the TASTIEST 3-course dinner served
by drag queens in the Tri-State area ( www.stingylulus.com )… Are YOU in for a
TREAT!!! (Sorry gents… absolutely NO lapdances allowed.)

Then… PARTY nonstop to the wee hours at LE BAR BAT ( www.lebarbat.com )... one
of NYC's most (in)famous nightspots, featuring a slate of NYC's hottest dance
bands… including STEVE MARSHALL AND THE DEPUTIES -- dubbed "NYC's WILDEST
Rock-n-Roll Band" by the N.Y. Post! ( www.stevemarshallband.com ) (Wait ‘til
you see those deputies…)

The above is just a small sampling of this weekend’s ENDORPHIN-FILLED
FESTIVITIES… so stop feeling sorry for yourself… drag those musty skates out
of the closet… and log onto www.bigappleroll.org/registration.htm to take the
BIG PLUNGE (for you commitment-phobes, don’t worry… it’s only for the weekend).

Walk-in registrations will be accepted this Friday evening and Saturday morning,
but increase to $80 to help defray all the last-minute scrambling of meals,
logistics, etc. on our part.

Thanks for reading down this far (that stamina will come in handy on the
skates)… and…

  SEE Y’ALL TOMORROW!!!

Only a few days left before New York City’s Big Apple Roll

Please be kind enough to pass this along to anyone who may be interested in
attending, we still have a little room to accommodate and all are always
welcome.

The weather forecast is looking perfect and dry with daytime temperatures in the
mid-upper 70’s and upper 60’s at night.

Be sure to make your menu selection for Friday night’s dinner, you will receive
an email notice to a form for this after you register.

Let us know if you have any availability problems booking with the hotel and try
not to wait to the last minute to make your reservations or register. Remember
that walk-in registration goes up in price (and slows down the registration
process for everyone)

We are doing our best to answer all of the email coming in, so please do not
hesitate to contact us with questions and be sure to check out the FAQ page
where many questions and responses have been posted at:
