Re: RiSC : Do helmets help?

Hi All,

Here's my take on the subject of "Hemet vs No Helmet."

As a critical care nurse in the Burn/Trauma ICU at Strong Hospital for the past
11 years I have personally worked on two inline skaters both of which suffered
fatal head injuries due to falls. Both skaters were not wearing helmets and
both ended up organ donors.

I also fell while skating in the Ontario Shore Marathon a few years back and
broke five bones in my face and flattened a portion of the right side of my
helmet. Had I not had a helmet I would have certainly sustained a head injury a
long with my broken face. I now wear a helmet with a jaw gaurd while skating or
riding my bike.

Wear a Helmet!

Sincerely,

tOm rOssBorOugH

I sat down at the computer to order a new helmet this morning.

I was riding my bike along Lakeshore. The town of Irondiquite Is installing
a paved walking/skating path in front of the lake. As I was riding at a
fairly high rate of speed, observing their progress AND NOT MY OWN I looked
foreward just as I hit a warning sign srtaight on (perhaps dead on) I think
that I flipped over. I know that I landed on my back and then my helmet
smashed into the pavement. I also remember thinking that this is surre going
to make a mess of my helmet.

I have broken a few ribs and am very sore, but I AM STILL ALIVE.
