Greetings, All,
I hope everyone's keeping warm! If old man winter has you going cabin
crazy, come out and join thousands to celebrate Winterfest, with all
kinds of winter activities, too many to list, all over Mendon Ponds:
http://MendonPondsWinterfest.org
Arrive early to try and use skis and snowshoes in a limited number of
sizes. A professional instructor gives beginner Nordic (cross country)
ski lessons every hour on the half-hour through 2:30p. Then join us as
we guide short tours starting from Stewart Lodge. Find me Nordic
freestyle/skate.
The Bill Koch Ski League and Special Olympics both hold Nordic ski
races.
Rochester Orienteering hosts a ski orienteering race, an Empire State
Games qualifier, on 4 courses from 5 through 14 kilometers. A snowshoe
race “with lots of hills and spectacular views”, also an ESG qualifier,
runs 2.5km: http://roc.us.orienteering.org. Both start from Cavalry
Lodge: http://MonroeCounty.gov/orgMain.asp?orgID=17
Even find folks ice skating on Hundred Acre Pond near Hopkins Point
and Pond View Shelter. Then find pizza & hot chocolate at the main
lodges and Nature Center.
To stay warm, dress with savvy. Wear a non-cotton wicking layer,
insulation according to activity, and a windshell. Take a deep breath
and think not cold but refreshing. Relax, stop tensing your shoulders,
then go active. Rochester need not suck in winter!
John
