…ever drive to Syracuse along the Thruway and notice skaters along
idyllic willows and a lake with vistas of a downtown skyline on the far
shore? Now imagine something more popular than our Canal path. Make it
four times wider and much smoother, place alongside a meandering walking
path like our canal path, set it beside a scenic lakeshore, give it the
urban accessibility of downtown Syracuse and a big university, build a
museum and stadium at one end, ban motorized traffic, and voilà… the
Onondaga Lake Park Trail. Because the Trail runs along a shore, it is
flat, and a round-trip to and through the newly completed West Trail
runs about 9 miles.
Sunday mornings through June 23, the Onondaga Lake Parkway, part of
Route 370 extending along the Lake another 2 miles southeast beyond the
Salt Museum, closes to motorized traffic. There hundreds walk, run,
bike, and skate. See for yourself:

then click on Orlando's Onondaga albums …password "risc2000". Our
archives contain many posts about Onondaga. Messages 136 and 134 from
last year might be especially useful:

We also plan to skate the Carousel Center, intended to be the largest
mall complex in North America, complete with two outdoor ampitheaters,
acres of parkland and ponds, and kilometers of boardwalk over Onondaga
to the Lake Park. Mike Halliday writes:

Bring whatever essentials you think you'll need, like money, sunscreen,
phones/radios, bagels, extra water, change of clothes, sandals, tools,
helmet and pads, skates, and expect to return in time to skate downtown
and hear Arethra Franklin and the Jazz Fest Grand Finale (;-).
For those coming from the eastern and southern suburbs, Orlando plans a
second rendezvous by Kauffman's in Eastview Mall. Write
ocfernan@... for details. For those who find Mid-Town
Athletic Club convenient, meeting in Liverpool at 9:15a requires we
depart about 7:45a:
