Skagit Runners Membership,
We are planning a Marathon volunteer meeting on Thursday 10/5/06. The
meeting place will be Alfys @ 6:30 pm. We have a few give aways that we saved
for the volunteers. Jim is putting together a list and will raffle them off at
the meeting. I will also bring the left over shirts. If you didn't receive a
shirt you can pick up one then. We are also going to recap the marathon, and
talk about what changes we propose to make next years marathon go smoother.
Thanks for all your help in making this year work out like it did. We may have
been short handed, but the members that were there did a great job of making it
look like we had plenty of help.
Now that the Marathon is over, and we have completely moved into the new
storage unit we need to think about supplies for the next 12 months. I am also
putting three Rubbermaid totes together, one for finish line supplies, one for
registration supplies, and one for course supplies. I will have a "Minimum
supply" list for race day, taped on the top of each tote. Before we take the
tote out we just need to make sure we have all the supplies listed. Steve just
about ran out of staples for the staple gun ( we only had one staple gun for a
while), Keefer had a tough time finding a sharpie. I know all of these items
were in the bag in August, a few of local races borrowed our supplies and
didn't make sure the items were returned. Members that borrow club equipment
need to make sure they return it in as good or better condition. If this means
they purchase sharpies or staples then that is what they need to do. Many of the
local races use our equipment free of charge, most clubs charge big bucks for
use of racing equipment. We really don't mind loaning it out as long as it is
returned ready for the next run.
Here is what I would like the membership do, look over these lists, and add
item you think we should need.
Thanks Terry

Finish Line:
2 Staple guns
2 pkgs 3/8" staples
3 Seiko timers
1 box printer paper for the timers
2-4 pack pkg AA batteries
4 Black sharpies
2 Blue sharpies
12 Bic pens
4 different color highlighters
25 Dummy tags
8 Fish stringers
Generic award sheets (graph paper)

Course Supplies:
2 Staple guns
2 pkgs 1/2" staples
4 rolls of Duct tape
2 rolls of clear packaging tape
12 cans of orange spray chalk
12 Cans of orange spray paint
Marking tape ( Orange, Yellow, Blue??)
Claw hammer
Universal screwdriver

Registration Supplies:
4 Green and 4 Purple sharpies (for male/female entrants)
4 Black sharpies
4 different color highlighters
Corrections list
12 Bic pens
4 boxes of safety pins
100 blank numbers
1 roll clear packaging tape
1 pkg tacks

Thanks to all for helping out and running in the Marathon and 1/2 Marathon on
Sunday. The event went off well, we had a few kinks, but overall it was great.
We had 520 people register, and 475 finish (our largest to date). We have a list
of things that we need to work on for next year to make it a bit smoother and
hopefully free up members. Jim Kopkowski is putting together a list of
volunteers. We plan on having a post race dinner to discuss what went right and
what went wrong. We have a few gift certificates left over and other freebies we
will be giving away at the dinner. If you volunteered let me know, and I will
put you on the list. I would really like the whole membership to attend. There
will be free pizza, salad bar, and beer. When a date is set I will let you know.
Thanks once again for all your help to make this Skagit Runners events a great
one! Without the dedicated members of this club we wouldn't be able to hold
events like this one.
Terry

You are a great athlete. The field of good marathoners was out there and you
beat them all again! You are truly impressive. Thanks for a great showing! We
will see you again next year, and hopefully at a few more races next year!
The race was chaotic on our end but everything went well for the runners, that
is most important.

   Terry,

I wanted to thank you again for the fine job you folks did with your event, I
also wanted to apologize that I had folded my race number over and didn't show
the event name and sponsors.

I usually try to be sensitive to those things...but I really didn't think I
was going to be the one... sorry about the photo op.

Just a reminder, we are holding the Goodie Bag stuffing after the Wednesday
night run at Steve's House. I will be there about 7:00 pm. Steve if you want me
to bring any snacks or drinks leave a message on my cell phone and I will pick
it up on my way there. Anyone that can make it please show up. We have 600 bags
to stuff. Contact Steve at sduncan359@... for his address, or follow the
herd after the (FootwoRx) Wednesday night run.
Thanks Terry

We will be stuffing bags next Wednesday (September 6) starting at 7 pm.
This will allow the Wednesday night runners to mostly finish their run
and help out if they want to. We did this last year on a Wednesday and
it worked well.

Anyways, the details:
The bag stuffing will be in south Mount Vernon at Steve's house
(please email info@... for directions -- I don't want to
put my address on a public list).

We will have about 600 bags to stuff and we had about 350 - 400 last
year and it took us a couple of hours, so we can use all the help we
can get. We can probably set up two separate assembly lines in
different rooms if we get enough people. I'll try to get the front
room cleared out as much as possible.

I think I had some food available last year, so I'll go shopping and get
some chips and drinks and maybe a vegetable plate.

We need more help with the marathon on Sunday, so let
Terry know if you (or somebody you know) can help with that.

See you next Wednesday!!

Steve

Our next marathon meeting is on Monday 8/28, 6:30pm, Alfys Pizza, in Burlington.
We will be putting the volunteer schedule together. We worked on some of it at
the last meeting, but of course we need more volunteers. Here are the areas we
need help:
   Expo registration and packet pickup
Day of race registration and packet pick up
   Traffic control
   Timing
   Food preparation
Delivering stuff to expo and start
Start set up and tear down
   Course set up
If you can help out in any of these areas please let me know or come to the
meeting for free pizza and a salad bar.
We also talked about Membership benefits. We decided if any members want to run
the marathon they can get in for the cheapest price available (pre 7/1/06 prices
with the $5 discount). Your cost will be $45 for the full, and $35 for the 1/2.
Just write this on your registration. Jodi I owe you $15, sorry for not sending
this out sooner, I just received your registration on Wednesday!! You will need
to either send in a registration or take one to FootwoRx. I would prefer these
sooner rather than later. I have so much work the few days prior to the
marathon, more work that gets done now, means less work then. Remember this is
our BIG event of the year and we can never have too much help. If you or a
family member can help out we will put you to work doing something. You will
also receive a free shirt for helping!
The other benefits are as follows:
Members that help out at one of the Skagit Runners owned runs (Skagit Flats
Marathon & 1/2 Marathon, Fowl Fun Run, or Tulip Run) will be allowed to run the
Fowl Fun Run or Tulip Run free. This will be on an honor basis, you will need to
let me know which run you want to run free. You might have to remind me when the
event nears, after all I am an Alaskan!

Members that renew now will receive a cotton t-shirt almost any color (just
let me know what color you prefer), or a Skagit Runners singlet. FootwoRx has
the singlet's at the Mount Vernon store now, they also have membership renewal
forms. The next time I am in Mount Vernon I will bring a few cotton t-shirts for
member to look at. Don't forget to state your size, color of t-shirt, and if you
want a singlet or t-shirt on the renewal form. I am going to get the shirts
printed on 9/4, so the sooner you let me know what you want the better.
Thanks and see you on September 10th!
   Terry

Hey trailhounds,

I'm heading out this week-end over to the CCC100. I'm trailsweeping from
Tacoma Pass aidstation to Hyak aidstation the time frame this is all happening
is from 2:00 pm to about 1:30 am. This is the famous section that goes through
Hyak tunnel, and down the ropes all of this is done at night! Just follow the
glow sticks. Then after this i will camp out at the Hyak aidstation until about
6am then drive over to the finish line to watch the leaders come in (last years
winner was sub 20 hours). If anyone want's to go over for this event either to
volunteer or trailsweep, or just to watch the race drop me a line. I'm letting
John Pearch use my Jeep for race patrol duties so you could hang with him while
i'm trailsweeping the course.

   Get dirty, run a trail.

Steve from Fairhaven Runners would like to borrow one of our clocks for the
Fairhaven 15k this year, September 16th. I am running the race this year so I
won't be able to do it like last year. Last year he put me at the 10k mark, and
they put their clock at the 5k mark. It was a very easy task. We need someone to
man the clock and return the clock after the race. If one member would like to
take on this task I would appreciate it.
Thanks Terry

This is so cool. They did Boston the year I ran it. They were allowed an early
start. This is the best thing about running big races to see the inspirational
people just trying to finish a marathon. It really uplifts your spirits and
makes you thankful for your health.

Here is a 12 minute video of the Chicago Marathon, very cool. If this doesn't
stir some emotion then you shouldn't be running! You just don't get
it!http://video.google.com/videoplay?docid=-3276706739880244003&q=Marathon&hl=en
For those of us, Dr. Rob, Joe, Jim, Tim, and myself this next video is why we
are running Boston in 2007, "BABY". To give those Wesley girls a big fat sweaty
kiss! Well maybe our wives wouldn't go for that, but we can enjoy looking at
them, and if you can think about anything except for the Wesley girls while
running through this part of the marathon you are deaf because they are
LLOOUUDD!
http://video.google.com/videoplay?docid=-3558475713375179254&q=Marathon&hl=en

There is some strange Marathon Maniac (yellow singlet) at the very end of this
video. Check it out if you ever want this same look just let me know I still
have some blue and red hair color left!
http://video.google.com/videoplay?docid=2196887267753148140&q=Marathon&hl=en

Here is another Boston Video, 15 minutes long! It is just amazing how many
people are in these marathons! Gregg Walchi (the 2004 Skagit Flats Marathon
winner) wearing his Amino Vital Jersey can be seen in this video. Check out the
bunny Lady!

This is not the best way to win a marathon. #8824 learned the hard way!

--Last night we discussed the marathon registration, volunteer schedule, items
that still need to be finalized, etc. Registration is up about 90% from last
years numbers. Last year we had 358 registrants, and 320 finishers (we have 189
registrants as of 8/17/06), . Right now it looks like we could get 600+
registrants, and 600 finishers if the registrations come in at the same rate as
last year. We had to increase our budget to accommodate the increase in
participation. At this time everything is going as planned even with the
increased registration. All of the sponsors have given me an arrival date for
their product, course permitting is done, etc.
--We will not have any messages available at the marathon finish. Maybe next
year we can get a member to work on this earlier in the year.
--The only items that need to be worked on by club members are as follows:
1) We need small items to give away at the awards ceremony. If members have an
opportunity to get small donations we would appreciate them for the
participants.
2) We need people to pick up items from sponsors.
3) We volunteers to sign up for duties in the marathon.
4) We need volunteers for the expo.

--Our next marathon meeting is on 8/28/06, 6:30pm, Alfy's in Burlington. Please
if you have a spot you would like to volunteer, let me know, and/or come to the
meeting. I will make every effort to assign members to the area they would like
to be.

--At the board meeting we discussed membership renewals. Our renewals are
normally due in July. We didn't ask for renewals until December last year. I
would like to get back on track. We decided to offer members a Skagit Runners
Singlet or Cotton shirt for free for every renewal. FootwoRx in Mount Vernon
will have samples to try on so members can decide. I would like to get these
printed at the same time as the marathon shirts, so members have about 1 1/2
weeks to decide what they size they want. The singlet's are white made by
Adidas. The cotton shirts are just like the shirts Dean had printed last year.
They will be short sleeve and virtually any color. I will have membership
applications at FootwoRx. For renewals please just write on the application
RENEWAL, and if you want a singlet, size, or a cotton tee, color and size.
--We also discussed the Fowl Fun Run budget, we decided to keep the same budget
the YMCA had last year.
--Jim and I are looking into moving to a different storage unit, by West View
Elementary. We can get a unit that is twice the size, still have the convenience
of being able to get into it 24 hours a day, and the price will only be a few
more dollars a month. The storage is very close to the finish line of the
marathon, and a lot easier to access for the other runs we put on in the county.
--Jim is going to start sending out checks to the recipients of our scholarship
program.
--The picnic went very well with a large participation of club members.
--The Tulip run date is 4-7-06
--Jim will be reimbursed for the quicken program he needs as Treasurer.
Keep on Runnin!

I would really like to go, but I am working on Friday night, so it is probably
not a good idea to go. I also need to take a day off. I am running tomorrow and
planning on running a long one on Sunday.
Maybe next time.

   Hey you trail dogs,

I'm going out this week-end for a 15 -20 mile trail run/hike on the Chain
Lakes loop which will include a side trip out to Lake Ann, then a side trip out
to the top of Tabletop Mt, with yet another side trip out to Ptamigan Ridge to
polish it off. This is very strenous running so beware of the terrain involves a
bit of walking in the really steep areas. So far three people are heading out
with me on Saturday Morning let me now if you want to go with and we could
hook-up. This is my annual kick my ass into shape run for the Cle Elum Ridge Run
50km.

Members,
Well the picnic is almost here. I was able to pick up 3 very nice Sockeye
Salmon. The club will also provide Hamburgers, Costco hot dogs, potato salad,
pop, water, and Gatorade. If you would like to bring a salad or dessert great,
if not, we will have plenty of food. I think the fun run is going to be a blast.
We will start the fun run @ 2:15, so please try to be there by 2:00. I am going
to Washington Park (Anacortes) early and secure one of the covered grills. Once
you pull into the park, make the first right and find the first parking spot you
can find, or you can park by the kids playground area.
Here is Dean criteria for prizes.

"My idea for criteria for winning a prize is the following:"

1) Coolest t-shirt from a run (judges will award according to their biases)
2) Ugliest t-shirt
3) Most colorful t-shirt
4) Blandest (most boring, I guess) t-shirt
5) Oldest t-shirt....date has to be on shirt
6) T-shirt that is the furthest point from Washington Park

Marathon entries are coming at a fast and steady pace. Since June registrations
have been consistently 90% higher than last year. As of today we have 154
registrants, last year at this same time we had 81. If they continue at this
pace we should have about 660 registrants,WOW. I just can't believe how this
marathon has grown since last year. I am going to order more medals and shirts
next week.

Next Thursday, 6:30 pm, at Alfy's, in Burlington, we are having another marathon
meeting. I would like everyone that is planning on helping at the marathon to
attend. I would like to assign course duties.

I would like to have a board meeting and talk about club renewals. We have an
opportunity to purchase Skagit Runners singlet's from FootwoRx. I will let you
know more after the meeting. We also need to set up a budget for the Fowl Fun
run, talk about the marathon budget, and set up a date for the annual meeting.

Last but not least the Riley Run is on Saturday 8/12/06. I think we have Bill
Ball, Steve Duncan, Stan Nakashima, and Jim Kopkowski helping out. If you would
like to help out contact Jim Kopkowski (James_Kopkowski@...).
As always we thank you for your continued help at the races!
Have a great weekend!
Terry

Also, we would have a predict your time (no watches on the run) as well as
other types of ways to win.

The big question is whether we will have more prizes that participants???? So
hopefully you are RSVPing Terry concerning attendence!

Only one award per t-shirt and you have to say the category in advance.

Need I say anything more???

Dean

PS: Terry or Jim or Bill are you buying the prizes????

Sunday August 13th, all Skagit Runners and their families are invited to
attend our picnic and social. We might have Sockeye Salmon if my friend at
work's catches any tomorrow. We will also supply Hamburgers, Potato Salad, and
refreshments. The event will be held at Washington Park around 2:00pm. We will
start off with a fun run around Washington Park, 2 1/4 miles. Dean will award
wacky prizes for everything except time. Any members that would like to join us
please let me know in advance so I know how much food and refreshments to
purchase.
If you are unsure of how to get to Washington Park reply back to me and I will
give you directions.
   See You Sunday.

Thanks to all Skagit Runners that made it to the race yesterday. We had more
help than we knew what to do with. It's always good to have too many helpers
than not enough. The finish, results, and course were perfect. The only
complaints I received were:

1) No Gu on course like promised.
2) Mile 1 bathrooms not open for the 1/2 marathoners.
3) Only 1/2 of the ribbons ordered.
4) Some 41 year old in the 5k running like he was on steroids ( Congratulations
Keefer!)

Minor problems, Next year will be even better. They had about 160 people
combined in both events. The event raised about $1500 for the Tommy Thompson
Parkway Beautification Project. Thanks to all Skagit Runners for helping out
with the race and/or running in the race.

I just ran the 1/2 marathon course as a training run, The hill on North Texas is
a long one, but as soon as you peak the hill it is all downhill and flat for the
reat of the course. The course is probably the most scenic I have ran!

Thanks to all that joined us for the first marathon meeting tonight 7/27/06.
Everything is on track, all of the sponsors have agreed to sponsor us again this
year and we've set pick up dates for most of the donated products. There are
only two things that need to be finalized "at this point".
1) We need items that can be given out to participants at the awards ceremony.
2) We need to find Massage Therapists to either donate their time, or charge $1
per minute for massages.
There is one thing I forgot to mention, last year we were able to get
donations from grocery stores, $20 in merchandise from each Haggens, 1 case of
bananas from Fred Meyers, $20 from each Safeway Store. If someone can take care
of this I would appreciate it.
Pam Kopkowski has agreed to be the liaison for donations. You may email
(pkopkowski@...) her for more information if you are able to help out
obtaining donations.
Our sponsors this year are:
Talking Rain
FootwoRx
Brooks
Walton Beverage (Gatorade)
Great Harvest Bread Company
Bakers Cookies
Fidalgo Bay Coffee
Carbboom
Birch Equipment is giving us our traffic cones at 1/2 price.
Road ID
Runners World
Snowpack
Thanks Terry

Thursday night 7/27, 6:30pm we will have our first marathon meeting. I have
attached a word document listing the items that have been finalized and some of
the items that need to be worked on. I also attached an excel spread sheet with
the marathon budget. Please if you can make it to the meeting, join us. This is
going to be the biggest year yet for the marathon. We already have 130 people
signed up. The registration is almost double what it was at this time last year.
We are going to need all the help we can get this year.
This year we are not going to have any ribbons, just plaques. I found a very
nice plaque for a great price (about $5 each). I received one of these plaques
at the New Mexico Marathon last year, very unique and impressive looking.
Saturday 7/29 is the first Art Dash 5k and 1/2 marathon in Anacortes. This run
has the most impressive views around. It is going to be great! Please if you
aren't running join us with finish line duties. This is a new event and I would
really like it to go well. Please meet me at the WT Preston (corner of "R" and
9th) in Anacortes at 8:00am. If I am not there please call my cell phone
(360-202-2801) I might be out getting the course set up with Jesse.

Our first marathon meeting will take place on Thursday 7/27, 6:30pm. We will go
over everything that is finalized, and everything that still needs to be done. I
am in the process of making brochures that members can take with them to show
business' exactly what Skagit Runners does for the community and how donating to
this Marathon will benefit them. Hopefully they will be finished by the meeting.
Thanks to all of the board members that have helped me with this project.
I would like to welcome two of our regular Tuesday runners at FootwoRx/Skagit
Runners weekly runs, Jennifer Ross and Lucia Muller. Welcome aboard!
Bill Arnett finished the newsletter early this week. The newsletters were sent
out a few days ago, everyone should have received their copy. If you didn't
receive your copy please let me know and I will mail one out to you.
We are planning a picnic and "Gag Fun Run" on the same day as the picnic
8/13/06, 2:00pm, at Washington park. Dean is organizing gag fun run. It will not
be a RACE, but a fun run. He will have prizes for the oldest shirt, ugliest
shirt, etc, etc. All of the categories haven't been worked out yet, with Deans
witty style you know it is going to be a blast.

Thanks and please RSVP for the picnic, so I know how much food and prizes to
purchase! The whole family is invited to the picnic!

Thanks Terry Sentinella

   Members;
The registrations are starting to come in fast and furious. Last year at this
same time we had 20 people signed up for the marathon, as of today we have 64
participants (300% increase). Could it just be the weather, the sun lifts
peoples spirits??? The total participation of the marathon last year was 357,
with 78 people entering at the expo or day of race. Last year we had a 30%
increase in participation in the marathon and 1/2 marathon from 2004. I ordered
425 medals, about 100 more than last year. Last year I ordered 300 initially,
then we ran out. I had to order 25 more medals and send them to finisher after
the race.
My concern is that I haven't ordered enough medals. I would really like to
discuss this with the group after the 4th of July. The first deadline is 7/1/06.
We should see quite a few more entries and have a fairly good estimate of what
to expect by then. I called PSG (the medal designer) and asked them to halt
production of the medals until we can have a chance to talk about this. The
medals can be viewed at FootwoRx in Mount Vernon. Steve also put a jpeg on the
website. www.skagitrunners.org
I would also like to discuss getting donations from local business's in the
area. Hopefully we can get a few members to solicit donations. I really don't
think it will be that tough. I will try to get a few promotional packets
together for members to use when soliciting.
I am still waiting for Carbboom to return my email about our sponsorship.
Cross your fingers! This is a HUGE savings!
   Thanks Terry Sentinella
