RE: [Sixties and Seventies Soccer] normally thumped Manchester United

I was at that game too, so was Tommy Doc in the stands, invited by Matt Busby I
believe...

The irony of course was that Palace were relegated that season, but United
managed to stay up - but went down the next. Tommy Doc though kept his job and
they roared back as Div 2 Champions.

When I was in primary school in South Croydon in the late 50's, we used to
fantasise that Palace would even play the mighty Man U, let alone beat them 5-0.
It helped that our first ever Div 1 game was at Selhurst against the Red Devils,
Best, Charlton, Law, Stepney and all - we held them 2-2.

Only later after the FA Cup Final replay did a sour note creep in, compounded by
Cantona in 1994/5...

The only thumping that I can recall anyone giving Man Utd was by the mighty
Eagles, sorry we were still the Glaziers then.
How we could do with a player of Don Rogers ability these days. I was at the
game and still had to pinch nyself to make sure I wasn't seeing things. To be
fair though United were in disarray then. Was Frank O'Farrell manager then Bill
? Were you still at Palace then Bill, must have been a bit of a dilemma for you.

Well certainly Minor Deities ! We are in the Conference after three seasons in
the (now) Premier League.Won the Milk Cup with players at the club like Ray
Houghton,John Aldridge,David Langan,Jeremy Charles,Billy Hamilton,Dean
Saunders,Bobby McDonald,Kevin Brock etc.,but thanks to people like Robert
Maxwell and Firoz Kassam went on a downward spiral ! Might have got into the
play-off's but for the 5 points deducted for administration queries (points also
deducted from Crawley,Mansfield and Bognor). We never ever lost to Arsenal at the
Manor and normally thumped Manchester United and Chelsea etc.,but times change
!!
