Well Terry an interesting story on the front of the
"Times" this morning, so it must be true...
The head of Railtrack is talking about resuming train
services on Christmas Day AND Boxing Day, the latter
would of course be particularly welcome for football
fans.
I'm not sure when BR packed up running trains on
Boxing Day, I think it must havve been some time in
the 1970's. I remember the frustration I felt
particularly in the early 1980's when I was living in
eastbourne without a car and Palace were playing
Brighton.
One year I went up over Xmas to stay with my bro, and
someone gave mne a lift to selhurst Park on Boxing
day, the only way I could get back down south was to
smuggle myself on board an Albion supporters coach.
Luckily for me albion had won, though there was a lot
of crowd trouble, I think someone was knifed that
year. The police came into the coach to get our IDs, I
was on the back seat and luckily was not carrying
palace clours!
I ended up staying the night in a Brighton B & B
because the taxifare back to eastbourne would have
been far more! So I for one would welcome the return
of a train service in the future.
