I'm back for the mo Bob!!
Just thought I'd apprise everyone of the current
position re the ongoing struggle of Brighton and Hove
Albion to build a new stadium at Falmer.
The final decision from Hazel Blears' department,
(formerly Ruth Kelly, formerly Johnny P)is due "on or
before July 9th."
Now this Monday it was announced on local TV that the
Govt. have apparently published proposed alterations
to the boundaries of the South Downs National Park
which would border Brighton and has a long-standing
effect on the Falmer plans.
I understand that the AONB (Area of Oustanding Natural
Beauty) borders have been "adjusted" so that the field
in which the stadium is proposed will no longer be an
AONB. Also the land alongside, part of Brighton Uni,
will also not be so classified.
On the other hand the proposed aklternative touted by
Lewes District Council, one of the main opponents of
Falmer, on a landfill site at Sheepcote Valley east of
Brighton, formerly not an AONB, now becomes one!
This if true would knock out the main plank of LDC and
its supporters' arguments against Falmer legally. I
understand the main decision will be announced on
Friday, but cannot guarantee this. It would however
seem more likely than Monday which is the last
possible day though.
I will keep you posted over the end(?) of this saga
which goes back 12 years at least. I found a book
detailing the story of BHAFC which states that the
charismatic former Chair of the Albion Mike Bamber,
who was instrumental in bringing the Clough/Taylor
partnership in and the the Albion icon Alan Mullery,
pushed for a site away from the Goldstone as far back
as the late 1970's!! Even at that time the restrictive
covenants on the ground, which prevented stands on the
east side for example, were recognised as stifling the
growth of the club.
Sadly Bamber died quite young, in the mid-1980's I
think. If he had not the history of BHAFC I'm sure
would have been very different.
