Sorry everyone I have been offline for a bit, now
catching up on things.
Yes I also saw the Doog at Palace against Wolves a few
times, he was one of the "characters" then. I think we
always give the Irish a bit of licence in the
temperaments stakes. For sure Besty was given a lot of
rope by Busby when I think if he had been English it
would have been different.
The kind of bustling centre-forward that the Doog
represented has really departed from the game
following the more rigid refereeing standards which
came in to "harmonise" our game with that played
elsewhere in the world. Goalkeepers now have a
protected status that they never had even in the early
1970's.
Whether the Doog could have adapted to the current
laws it's difficult to say. Probably best to remember
him as he was.
There will no doubt be many more of his generation who
will be soon commemorated, a sad feature of the sands
of time. Maybe SKY should be prodded to do more to
remember these past heroes.
