Re: [Sixties and Seventies Soccer] Re: Football Chants

Head a witty jokes about Shilts who I understand was also fond of a gamble.
Fan A "That Shilton is incredible, if he plays his cards right he could still be
playing when he's fifty"
Fan B "If he had played his cards right, he could have afforded to retire when
he was thirty"

In two words BRIAN CLOUGH!
One p.s. about Peter Shilton, in 1998 Shilts finished
his playing career on a match by match basis at Leyton
Orient. I read a report about this and realised the
next Orient fixture was at Brighton, where the
Goldstone was about to shut. I went to the match,
stood outside the away section and asked a fan if
Shilts was playing. "No he isn't, but Butch Wilkins
is!" he replied.
I thought that was too good to miss, and saw a game
which has gone down in history. The eventual score was
4-4, and a Brighton fan ran on to the pitch and
attacked the ref and Wilkins who tried to protect him.
There was nearly a riot. Was I glad to be in the O's
section!!
Shilts was born in September 1949 only a month after
me. It was amazing to think he was still playing
league football nearly 50 years later. His fitness was
of course legendary, as was his libido...
