Hi Bob & All,
I've just rejoined the group & am suprised to see that
no one has left a message about the passing of one of the greats to
ever play on a football field..... along with Greaves, Moore & Bobby
Charlton, he was my favourite player as a kid, & our school team used
to play in Man Utd red, white & red. I remember buying a pair of
George Best endorsed shoes (Not football boots, SHOES !!..Very
plasticated which made your feet sweat !... horrible things they were
but looked great....). I was too young to attend any games, so never
got to see him play in the flesh myself, but I have all the good
goals that MOTD captured on various videos. Some years ago, I wrote
to all of the above, who all kindly sent me personally signed photos,
even writing out the address on the envelopes, how many players do
that nowadays ? So my photos of the above three mean alot to me.
I was at a film premiere in 1983, the main star who I
wanted to meet had done a bunk halfway through the film to avoid
fans, so at the end of the premiere, I was wandering around the foyer
of London's Empire Cinema, trying to spot anyone decently famous so I
could go home with a story to tell as well as a nice memory. Luton
fan Eric Morecombe was there, as was pop star Limahl from Kajagoogoo
(!!!) & a Nolan sister, but there was a fair crowd around someone I
could'nt quite see, so I joined it to get a glimpse of who it was, &
it was George. He was happily signing autographs, & being nice to
everyone, & I'm very happy & proud that I got to meet one of my
heroes who signed my book. I read of George's ill health the last few
weeks & hoped he would pull through, & was very upset when I heard
the sad news. Football's Heaven 11 now have one of their wingers.....
R.I.P. George.
Best To All,
Bri (Chelsea fan)
