Having said that, I've now reread my response to Kathy, and sent a note of
apology for what I recognise was bad manners directly to her. I stand by the
substance of what I said, but not its tone.
Best to all,
Peter

In the words of Monty Python's Four Yorkshiremen - "We used to live
in a shoebox in middle of road..."
Whilst this group celebrates nostalgia, coming across as having a
chip on one's shoulder doesn't serve any purpose.
And while I can work blue as much as the next guy, I'd prefer we
didn't do it within this group.
"....and when we got home, our mum and dad would thrash us to death
with a broken bottle and dance on our grave singing hallelujah. And
you try and tell the young people today that. And they won't believe
you...."

You;ve got to be fucking joking, to quote the great man from another
context. Nights out were a western movie under Alf's strict
supervision. He told players that if they broke the rules they were
out of the squad. They were not cosseted , of course, but I suggest
you read any of the numerous books about the World Cup 1966 victory;
they all describe the extensive preparations the England team
undertook. We folks alive in 1966 did not come from the dark ages;
we worked hard for what we achieved, and the England team are no
exception.. By the way, isn;'t it a bit obvious that today;s players
have not achieved what the 1966 crop did? We all koow there has been
no second World Cup victory.

grew up in an England deprived of many comforts because of the Second
World War. No meat to speak of, a tiny bottle of ooncentrated orange
juice for the family every week, fried bread daubed with HP sauce for
breakfast, an egg per person pe week, that sort of thing. And it
went on well past the war. I know; I was there. It doesn't seem to
have hurt them, does it?
