Friends,

I received an e-mail from a close friend alerting me to the bugbear virus
which has been spreading under many of the best virus shields. It apparently
sends itself from address book to address book. I have enclosed the
information that describes it and the eradication procedure. The information
came from the Washington Woman's Foundation. They are highly reputable
sources.

When I checked my computer I discovered the bug bear icon on my C drive in
the System files. In my case it was a 48 KB file. I would hope I caught it
before replicating but since it made it thru my virus defense, it would be
best for you all to check for it.

Love to all, Arlett

The message I received

Dear friends:

Below is a message I received about the bugbear virus and instructions on
removing it. I did find the virus in my C drive, even though I had already
deleted a suspicious e-mail without opening it - and run the latest virus
scan. When I followed these instructions, I found it. I am forwarding this
so that you may check your files also. I apologize for the inconvenience.

This is a message to inform you that the Washington Women's Foundation
offices recently received the new Bugbear virus.

We apologize, but there is a strong possibility that you have been infected
by it, especially since many anti-virus programs seem to be missing it during
their scans.

The virus goes straight to everybody's address book, whether or not we have
emailed you. It stays quietly in your address book for 14 days before
damaging your system. It also goes to everyone in your address book, and so
on.

It's EASY to delete:

1. Go to Start, then choose Find or Search option.
2. In the Files/Folders option, write the jdbgmgr.exe.. or just jdb. which
will find everything with jdb at the start of it.
3. Makd sure you check your C drive and any other drives you have. To do
this go down to Look in, choose down arrow and click on C, this will ensure
your whole C drive is checked for the virus.
4. Click Search Now.
5. If you have the virus you will see a Teddy Bear icon with the name
jdbgmgr. DO NOT OPEN IT!
6. If you have this Teddy Bear icon, DON'T left click. You need to RIGHT
CLICK on it, then click on DELETE.
7. Once it is deleted, it will go to your Recycle Bin.
8. Go to your Recycle Bin and delete it from there also.

If you found this virus in your system, once you have deleted it, you will
now need to email everybody in your email address book, otherwise they will
be infected and keep reinfecting you with it, along with everyone in their
address book.

To contact everybody in your address book, do this:
1. Go to Create Mail.
2. Click the photo/picture of the address book beside To:
3. Click every name in your address book and add them to BCC
Copy this message, enter the subject. Paste it to the email, Send it to
everyone.

Outgoing mail is certified Virus Free.
Checked by AVG anti-virus system (http://www/grisoft.com).
Version 6.0.381/Virus Database: 214-Release Date 2/08/02

CompuServe warns:
This a pernicious virus. It disables firewall and anti-virus protection and
then prepares a port on the infected PC that can receive instructions from
remote users. Their goal is to get access to your PC so they can steal
credit card, financial information, password and other sensitive financial
information you may have.

It spreads by e-mail, disguising infected messages as a "reply" or "forward"
to an existing message. According to my CompuServe warning one of the best
clues to spot it, since it will have varied subject headings, is that the
attachment is 50,668 bytes. Marcia Zech
