Dear Kath

20th November 2009

Chairman's Blog
Chairman's Blog

A few – not many in truth – have commented that I have “gone quiet” over the past two or three weeks whereas supporters would have expected me to add clarity to recent events “as you always do”.

I do not know whether those sentiments are echoed by the majority but I should not like the Club’s true supporters to think that the “drama” surrounding HMRC had, in any way, diminished either my enthusiasm for the Club or determination to deliver the “promised land”!

I said at the time of discharging the payment to the “tax man” (on the day of the Gillingham FA Cup game) that I would make a fuller statement the following week.  The short comment about the formality of the court hearing on the Monday was not it!

The transaction to enable the £2m payment to HMRC was part of a larger arrangement which “simply” (understatement!) accelerated its conclusion.  Like all complex legal/banking matters there are often subsequent conditions which need to be addressed, swept up if you like, and the past two weeks I have largely been engaged in doing just that.

The period leading up to making the funds available was intense and the last couple of weeks have been only a little less so.  Therefore please accept my apologies for not keeping you in the loop which I plan to rectify over the next few days now that I am able to turn my attention to other Club matters.

I shall, next week, be issuing a series of blogs to cover such subjects as:

·         HMRC – how did the position arise

·         How was the debt paid

·         The “consortium”

·         My thoughts about the current squad size

·         The future

So once again, sorry if you think that supporters have been kept in the dark but that was certainly not the intention.  Some matters must take priority, others are commercially sensitive and there are only so many hours in the day.

I look forward to opening up the airways however there are one or two items you can be assured of.   Recent events did not “creep up” unnoticed and whilst the inadvertent “use” of HMRC Bank Plc may not have been well received in all quarters the Club’s approach was one of control and expectation of policy promoted by the Football League in discussion with HMRC.  In the event, HMRC had the Government coffers to protect and in doing so had no regard for the screamingly obvious commercial position that would facilitate payment or the delays and circumstances of which they were directly or indirectly responsible.

If this gives the impression that the gods are looking down from Olympus and competing with each other to see who can screw our Club the hardest, then so be it.  As football supporters we are all cursed with a genetic propensity for moaning but the tax man’s efforts to unglue all that is good about our wonderful Club was beyond the pale.  Not just the passion that is created during 90 minutes on a Saturday, or as with today on a Friday night, but the outstanding contribution the Club makes to the community, social inclusion, charities, civic pride and the children of our Town.  Do not tell me this would not have been unravelled if HMRC had “won”.

I know where I am taking this Club and will not be distracted by the detractors.

To be continued…

Up the Blues!

STEVE Tilson is hoping for a successful sixth anniversary as manager of Southend United.

The 43-year-old today becomes just the sixth Blues boss to ever reach the landmark.

And he hopes to celebrate in style by beating MK Dons at Roots Hall tonight.

“On the whole it’s been a great six years and it would be great to mark it with a win this evening,” said Tilson.

“There have been more ups than downs during my times in charge and I have some great memories from being the manager.

“Hopefully I can still be in charge for at least another six years too and we can go on to achieve even more success.”

Tilson first took charge of the Shrimpers, originally as caretaker manager, exactly six years ago today.

Two days after his appointment, which followed the departure of Steve Wignall and then previous caretaker David Webb, Blues beat Rochdale 4-0 at Roots Hall.

And a run of more good results then led to Tilson being made manager on a permanent basis.

“I remember that Rochdale game well but at the time I didn’t expect to be manager for much longer,” said Tilson.

“I was in charge of the youth team and I don’t know if I was the first choice for the first team job at that point because it’s something I’ve never asked the chairman.

“Things went well though which put a bit of pressure on him and he gave me the job, which was great.”

Since then, Tilson has led the Shrimpers to two promotions and two LDV Vans Trophy finals at the Millennium Stadium.

He is therefore regarded by many to be Blues’ best ever manager but things have been tough for him this term.

The club’s current financial concerns have left him with limited options for most of the campaign but he has been boosted by the return of Johnny Herd for tonight’s game.

He looks set to start at left-back after recovering from a hamstring problem.

And Tilson is keen to secure his first ever victory over the Dons, who easily knocked Blues out of the Johnstone’s Paint Trophy earlier on this season.

“That was the game which has disappointed me the most so far this season,” said Tilson.

“There was a real lack of effort from us and it wasn’t acceptable.

“Hopefully we can make amends tonight and bounce back from the frustrating defeat at Yeovil.”

Blues will be missing Sean Morrison, who serves a one match suspension, meaning Anthony Grant is likely to continue in defence.

Southend United (from): Mildenhall, Grant, Francis, Barrett, Herd, Laurent, McCormack, Christophe, Moussa, Barnard, Freedman, Walker, Scannell, Joyce, O’Keefe and Asante.

l Blues youth team are in action tomorrow as they travel to Aldershot Town, kick off 11am.

The man in charge is Darren Deadman who comes from Chatteris, Cambridgeshire, and is a civil servant in Peterborough.

In his fifth season as a League referee he is just one feisty match away from 500 yellow cards. He is on 494 - will he go for it tomorrow night ? His red card count is above average too.

He is a member of the so-called Talent Group of promising young officials being groomed for better things. Based on previous experience of watching Mr Deadman, expect unnecessary cautions and a few puzzling decisions all delivered with an iritating style.

He was once suspended for two weeks for allowing one too many substitutions in a pre-season friendly - hardly his biggest crime against football. (Shouldn't be a problem tomorrow, depending how many subs the Football League are allowing us - perhaps it's one less each match until the bonuses are paid!)

Refereed us 5 times before. Last season away to Brighton, where those of you with binoculars would have seen him caution Dervite and Sankofa (but not Macca for some reason). The season before at home to Northampton (1-1 just 2 yellows), Preston at home the year before that (0-0 6 yellows) and the year before that at home to Swansea (1-2 7 yellows). He also did our 4-3 away win at Chesterfield that year when he sent off their defender for being unwittingly struck by the ball some way from goal.

Stephen Vaughan has become the first owner of a professional football club required to reduce his shareholding because, according to FA rules, he is no longer a "fit and proper person". Vaughan, a Liverpool businessman who bought the Conference club Chester City in 2001 and owns 100% of the shares, was last week disqualified from acting as a director of any company until November 2020, following his involvement in a £500,000 VAT fraud.
The FA's rules, which apply to Conference clubs, state that anybody disqualified as a company director cannot hold 30% or more of a club's shares. The FA will write to Vaughan requiring him to sell or give up his majority stake in City within 21 days of the disqualification taking effect on 25 November. If he does not comply, the club could ultimately be expelled from the Conference.
Relegated from the Football League last season and in administration over the summer, City already have the threat of expulsion hanging over them, unless they pay money owed to the Professional Footballers' Association, Wrexham and Vauxhall Motors FC by 30 November.
According to an undertaking Vaughan signed with the Insolvency Service, he committed the VAT fraud while a director of Widnes Vikings rugby league club, which was then in administration, in October 2007. It stated that he "caused" Widnes to buy clothes from a UK company in three transactions worth £2.9m, plus VAT of £505,265.
Payment for the clothes was not made to "the alleged supplier", but to an account at the First Curaçao International Bank, based in the Netherlands Antilles. The clothes were sold on the same day to a company based in Spain; overseas buyers do not have to pay VAT, and Vaughan tried to reclaim the £505,265 for the club from HM Revenue and Customs.
HMRC refused to pay, and proceedings were begun against Vaughan which led to him admitting the transactions were a "carousel" in which the VAT was fraudulently claimed from HMRC.
In a statement, the FA said: "We are aware of the Insolvency Service decision and will be taking necessary steps under the requirements of the fit and proper person test."
The case could test the rules' effectiveness, however, because according to City's managing director, Bob Gray, Vaughan may hand the shares to one of his sons. "He has to relinquish his shares," Gray acknowledged, "but who he gives them to is up to him. He could keep them within the family." If that happened, the FA would have to be satisfied that Vaughan was not still "exercising direct or indirect control" over the club's affairs, which the rules prohibit for somebody declared not "fit and proper".

JOHNNY Herd feels he has an 80 per cent chance of being fit for Friday’s clash with MK Dons.

The left-back missed last weekend’s 1-0 defeat at Yeovil Town with a hamstring injury.

But he now hopes to be nearing a return to action.

“The aim is to be fit for the game on Friday and that’s what we’re working towards,” said Herd, 20.

“At the moment I would say I’m about 80 per cent certain of being involved but I will have a proper fitness test today and we will know more after that.

“I can still feel some pain but I’ve done a few sprints and come through that fine so hopefully I will be able to join in with training tomorrow and then be fit for Friday.”

Herd sustained the injury during the 3-0 defeat in the opening round of the FA Cup at Gillingham 11 days ago.

He originally expected to be out for at least for a month but is now facing a shorter spell on the sidelines.

“It was a bit amateur of me to say I was going to be out that long before I had even gone for the scans,” said Herd.

“They showed there wasn’t a tear so instead of looking at being out for around four to six weeks it’s looking more like one or two which is obviously good news.”

Herd’s impending return will also be welcomed by manager Steve Tilson who currently has just two fit defenders in his small squad – Simon Francis and Adam Barrett.

Anthony Grant and Jean Francois Christophe, who are naturally midfielders, have been forced to switch into the back four.

But, despite those problems, Herd will not be rushed back into the starting line-up.

“You have to be sensible about it and I won’t play on Friday if I’m not fully ready,” said Herd.

“The hamstring is a main muscle in your leg so you have to be careful. I don’t want to come back too soon then completely pull it because then I would probably be out until after Christmas “That’s why we are taking it a day at time but hopefully I will be OK to play against MK Dons.”

Making no apologies for posting this, it answers some of the stuff you lot have been asking, and all credit to SOL's Kim Mitten for doing the asking:
Spoke to Ron Martin, Adam Barrett and Tony Grant today

Right, so today at Yeovil I asked a few questions and got a few answers - here is what I can remember!

Kev saw a black Merc turning up whilst going to get a ticket, in the back, none other than Ron Martin, he told his nipper to go and ask a few questions about finances - instead I went and this is what he told me:

My first question was who paid the tax man - him or Sainsbury's.

He said - unfortunately my companies paid the full 2M, at the time the contract with Sainsbury's to buy Roots Hall had actually ended, and has now been re-negotiated.
He then said he had been using HMRC as a bank. I said, you paid them, basically because things came to a head - he said, yes, they were no longer willing to be used. I asked whether he would want the club in admin to save some money. He said over the last 2 years he could have placed the club in admin at any point but didn't and won't because he wants to remain credible.

He said the consortium who offered to buy the club were not viable as they showed no proof they had the money to pay the debt off, and he was not willing to sell with the offer they made.

I asked him about Sainsbury's and the rumour that Roots Hall was going to cost them 4M - he said this was untrue and it was much more, he could not go into details but said the land around Roots Hall alone was 9M. They have had to renegotiated the contract recently as the previous agreement had expired.

I then asked if Fossets Farm was any nearer or ever likely to go ahead.
He told me that the majority of the finacnial blocks are now in place and it will go ahead sooner rather than later. He also said it was in the best interests of him, the football club and Sainsbury's that Fossets Farm goes ahead asap.

I ended with a bizzare rumour I'd heard that our seconded biggest creditor was a public sector of the government of Kazakhstan.
He laughed and said over all this time, with all the rumours that was the best one he had heard, no they aren't the next biggest creditor, but he thought it was a fantastic rumour.
He then shook my hand, I thanked him for his openness to answering my questions and we parted.

After the match I waited round (as my train was 6:30) for the players.

Spoke to Adam Barrett and Anthony Grant. I spoke to Barrett about wages. I said there was a lot of rumours about players not being paid. He told me there had been problems but all the players were fully up to date on their wages. They all know there have been problems, but now the money has been paid he said he was hoping it was all behind everyone and they could move forward - he also said we need more players and quick.
Grant mainly spoke about his disdain for the lino or as he put it - 'I could kill that bloke, what was he on.' they both complained about how crap the officials have been this season.
By the time I had to leave to make my train only Simon Francis had appeared so I made my way back.

I considered what I would write on the way home, and however I do this, it is going contradict itself.

We were robbed, yet deserved nothing. We fought hard, but it wasn't a good performance.

The game was played with intermittent showers but a constant gusty gale force wind, players slipping and aerial balls very hard to judge. Even so, for the first 20 minutes, we looked bright and breezy. Laurent and Barnard were finding gaps, and all looked confident. Even so, Yeovil did hit the post and Mildenhall had to make a very good stop. Then the game turned. Morrison, 30 minutes into his debut saw red. From my position behind the opposite goal I couldn't tell you if it was a foul nor could I tell you if he was the last man. I am, however, fairly sure the Yeovil player wasn't heading for goal and therefore I'd question whether it was an obvious goal scoring opportunity. Immediately we looked disorganised, and Yeovil wasted several good chances with Mildenhall clearly enjoying returning the Huish.

The second half, with our faces in the wind, was always going to be a back against the wall performance. And it was. Christophe moved into centre back and was superb. Bodies were thrown into blocks, tackles were made. Even so, Yeovil wasted a few more chances to break the deadlock. The sort of stuff that no doubt had home fans with their heads in their hands. Indeed, it looked the sort of game where no matter what chances Yeovil were given, they'd never take one. Frankly put they were dreadful up front, a half decent forward line would have buried us by then.

One constant during the game were the officials who were obviously winding up our players with decisions. Grant was cautioned for dissent when somewhere the assistant flagged for a corner when it was clear to all that the ball had simply been (another) very poor shot and not a deflection. Macca cautioned, quite bizarrely, for time wasting. Freedman penalised for a foul that never was, and wouldn't you know it, the ball fell kindly to a Yeovil forward who mishit his shot against another Yeovil forward and it ended up in the back of net.

Barrett, Brush and Tilly remonstrated with the ref afterwards.

But... the bottom line is, if you don't manage a shot on target all afternoon, you aren't going to win games. If you can't create chances that will allow shots on target, you aren' going to win games.

Ratings

Mildenhall 9 - Superb, possibly his best performance in a Southend shirt
Francis 5 - Out of sorts. Misplaced paces and not at the races.
Grant 7 - Emergency left back, put everything into the second half.
Barrett 7 -Caught short at time with the wind.
Morrison 5- Did his job ok for 30 minutes. Can't add much more.
Christophe 9 - Outstanding as emergency centre back, oozed confidence.
Macca 6 - Not a vintage Macca display, despite a booking.
Moussa 5 - Really struggling to remember any of note from him.
Laurent 7 - Looked dangerous when he had the ball, and performed well in the second half
Freedman 5 - I am starting to question what benefit he brings to the side
Barnard 7 - Hardly touched the ball but chased absolutely everything.

Subs
Walker 6 - Had 10 mins at the end.

Officials 4 - Dreadful.

Here we go, "our most creative midfielder" payed in the middle last week at Gillingham and was dreadful so I suggest you leave that one now. Grant is playing better in defence than I've seen him play in the midfield ever (Chelsea apart).

Can only echo what Kerry says, some frankly bizarre decisions by the ref, all 3 of our bookings and the sending off were quite laughable. Had Macca been booked for a little spat that I think most of us saw I'd have understood it but time-wasting? Ridiculous.

Mildy - 9, superb, great saves
Franno - 6, struggled with the conditions and a newby alongside
Morrison - 6, looked ok but a bit on the slow side, never a sending off - the guy was running towards the corner, it was a little shirt pull and Barrett was last man anyway
Barrett - 7, battled well, some decisive heading
Grant - 8, coped very well
Laurent - 6, quiet in 1st half, think they'd done their homework on him a bit better than most - had the ball in the net but a rather strange offside decision had already been given
Christophe - 9, quite outstanding when he dropped back, some fantastic bustling challenges and his positional play was excellent
Macca - 6, had one of those days where he was doing the right thing but everything went wrong, poor boy, I know you lot'll slate him
Moussa - 6, header off the line apart I barely noticed him
Dougie - 6, game called out for pace not trickery, Scannell or Walker should've come on much earlier
Barney - 7, kept running and chasing, again, Yeovil had done their homework

Sub - Walker for Dougie, near the end - 7, not enough time

MOTM - has to be the guy in our end who was going pink through frostbite having been bare chested throughout the game - and no, it wasn't TrueBlue! Thought when his mates were tweaking his nipples they were going to snap off!

Crowd - 8, we were vocal in our support and encouragement, but not in any organised chanting type way.

Officials - 0, crap, end of. The Yeovil goal was handball, the ball bounced in off Bowditch's arm, Morrison should never have been sent off, our 3 bookings weren't, the free kick that lead to the goal wasn't, the corner not long before it wasn't, 4 minutes added time means a MINIMUM of 4, not 2 - the list was endless. I honestly thought one of Tilly, Brush or Barrett was going to lamp the ref at the end!

AFTER a 1-0 victory over Southend United at Huish Park on Saturday, Yeovil Town manager Terry Skiverton stopped short of calling Dean Bowditch his "fox-in-the-box" – but he clearly believes that the returning goal hero will make a big difference to the Glovers in the remainder of this Coca-Cola League One campaign.

Bowditch scored on his Town debut against Tranmere on the opening day of the season but then spent three months out of action after dislocating his shoulder. He made his comeback ahead of schedule against Southend – and scored within seven minutes of coming on as a substitute.

"That's two goals in 75 minutes now, not that I'm counting!" joked Bowditch after his dramatic introduction. "It was the perfect way to come back after so long out and the script just seemed to be written for me.

"I was just in the right place at the right time and the ball hit my bad shoulder on its way into the net, which is a bit ironic."

Yeovil have missed Bowditch's clinical finishing during his enforced absence and wasted a string of opportunities on Saturday before the former Ipswich Town marksman broke the deadlock.

Skiverton was excited at the prospect of fielding the 23-year-old in his Yeovil line-up before the start of the season, only to be robbed of his services when he fell awkwardly under a challenge from Tranmere's Shaleum Logan.

Bowditch's return ahead of schedule will finally allow the Glovers to call on the man the manager claims is the most natural goalscorer in his squad. The evidence supported Skiverton's view on Saturday as Bowditch nearly added a second goal just minutes after his first, being denied by former Town goalkeeper Steve Mildenhall.

After three months out of action, the Hertfordshire-born hit-man can surely only improve over the coming weeks. Bowditch waited for his chance from the bench on Saturday as Jon Obika was handed the lone striking role in the absence of the injured Sam Williams.

Skiverton was forced into a further re-shuffle as Nathan Jones, Shaun MacDonald and Terrell Forbes were also ruled out. Forbes was unable to play after feeling ill in the pre-match warm-up, with Stefan Stam drafted into defence. The late drama did not affect the Glovers, as they dominated the first half against a Southend side also hit by an injury crisis.

Yeovil captain Craig Alcock came close to an opening goal on 17 minutes when he met Scott Murray's corner with a thumping header which cannoned back off a post.

Ten minutes later the impressive Mildenhall rescued his side with a smart save, keeping out Murray's low shot with his feet. The goalkeeper also saved well from Obika, while Steven Caulker headed just over from another corner.

Southend were at full stretch, and on-loan Swindon Town defender Sean Morrison overstepped the mark on his debut on the half hour.

A sublime pass from Ryan Mason sent Obika racing clear and Morrison pulled him back just outside the penalty area. Referee David Phillips judged the offence a professional foul and showed the Plymouth-born player a red card to reduce the Shrimpers to ten men.

Mason curled the resulting free-kick just wide of the target, but Yeovil continued to create chances and Mildenhall again denied Murray before the break.

Town's best chance fell to Andy Welsh, after a dreadful error from Alan McCormack, but the winger lifted his shot over the crossbar from close range.

In the second half Murray was guilty of wasting a great chance when his control let him down at the crucial moment, but the Glovers kept pouring forward.

Mason drilled a shot narrowly wide after a neat turn on the edge of the area, while Welsh was thwarted by a last-ditch tackle from Anthony Grant. Mildenhall excelled himself again on 64 minutes when he smothered Mason's shot after the midfielder was sent up by Alcock's pinpoint pass.

With 20 minutes left, Skiverton decided to introduce the predatory Bowditch in the hope of finding the finishing touch his side had been missing. It took him less than seven minutes to make an impact, although he knew little about the goal. Obika smashed a volley at goal and the ball deflected off Bowditch's shoulder past a helpless Mildenhall.

"It really doesn't matter how he scored the goal – it just matters than he scored," Skiverton said. "He just has the knack of being in the right place at the right time."

SOUTHEND United manager Steve Tilson was left fuming at referee Dave Phillips following his side’s 1-0 defeat at Yeovil Town this afternoon.

The Blues boss was furious that Phillips opted to send off his new loan signing Sean Morrison during the first half.

And he also felt that the Glovers’ winning goal should not have been allowed.

“Again the officials have cost us the game,” said Tilson.

“I haven’t seen the incident again on the DVD yet but I thought Adam Barrett was covering Sean so it’s not a professional foul and should not have been a red card.

“Then I thought the free-kick which led to their goal shouldn’t have been given and, on top of that, their player has handled it into the net.

“That’s three dubious decisions and they’ve all gone against us.”

The first of verdicts saw Morrison being dismissed to make it a nightmare debut for the 18-year-old.

The centre-back only finalised his monthlong loan switch from Swindon Town on the morning of the match.

And he was as shocked as anyone when he saw the red card.

“The referee has told him four times that it was going to be a yellow card and has then showed him a red,” said Tilson, 43.

“There were some very strange decisions from the linesman too and it really has cost us.

“I thought Yeovil were running out of ideas during the second half and that we had done enough to get a point.”

The defeat meant the Shrimpers slipped to 13th in the League One standings and they have again been left with just two fit defenders unless Johnny Herd can quickly recover from his hamstring strain.

Tilson, along with skipper Adam Barrett and striker Dougie Freedman, protested to the match officials on the pitch for two minutes after the final whistle.

Paul Brush also expressed his views after the trio had departed but Blues will not be appealing against the decision to dismiss Morrison.

“Referee’s very rarely change their minds so there’s no point in doing that,” said Tilson.

“The lads dug in though and were great. I certainly can’t fault them for effort “Steve Mildenhall made some fantastic saves and I really can’t fault the lads because they gave me everything.

“It’s a real sickener to lose like we did but have to soldier on and be ready for the game against MK Dons on Friday, which will be another tough test.”

THINGS do not seem to be going Southend United’s way this season.

The Shrimpers’ problems off the pitch have been well documented but there have been problems on it too, including a real lack of luck.

Blues were finally able to bolster their defensive ranks before the game at Yeovil Town on Saturday but their new arrival — Sean Morrison — lasted just 31 minutes before being sent off.

It was a decision which could have gone either way but, with the season Southend have been having, it was not a surprise when the centre-back was dismissed for a professional foul, and he will now be suspended for Friday’s game with MK Dons.

Blues have not had the rub of the green with refereeing decisions this term and that is not sour grapes.

But one thing the Shrimpers are not lacking is effort and that was again shown at Yeovil.

For, despite having just 10 men for an hour and again being forced to play people out of position, Southend produced a spirited and committed performance.

They may not have managed a shot on target or even really looked like scoring but the manner of the match dictated a less cavalier approach.

Blues defended superbly and seemed set for a point before Dean Bowditch’s late winner which was harsh on the visitors, especially goalkeeper Steve Mildenhall.

He continued his fine run of form with a man of the match display against his former side and another unsung hero, Anthony Grant, also impressed.

Goalkeeper, left wing and up front are now the only positions he has not played in this season and he did an excellent job at left-back on Saturday.

Grant and the rest of the Shrimpers squad will now hope to be soon welcoming some much needed new team mates.

And, just as importantly, they will also be seeking a change of luck — particularly with the match officials.

SHRIMPERS skipper Adam Barrett was also disappointed by the displays of the match officials at Yeovil Town on Saturday.

The centre-back felt Sean Morrison’s red card changed the course of the game.

And, as the nearest player to the incident, he did not feel his latest defensive partner deserved to be dismissed.

“I was round there covering and I don’t think Sean was the last man to be honest,” said Barrett.

“That decision changed everything and it was just so frustrating because we just didn’t get anything from the officials all afternoon.

“We came here wanting to win but as soon as Sean got sent off it was all about hanging on and unfortunately we just couldn’t quite do that in the end.”

Dean Bowditch eventually converted in the 77th minute to secure a 1-0 victory for the home side.

And Barrett was infuriated that the referee had again contributed to his side losing.

“You have to be careful what you say these days but these strange decisions keep on going against us and I don’t know why,” fumed the defender.

“It’s been difficult enough for us this year and the decisions from referees have really cost us.”

The red card led to Blues again reshuffling their back four and will leave them with just two natural fit defenders as Morrison will now have to serve a one-match suspension.

But Barrett is looking forward to figuring alongside the youngster when he returns to action.

“Sean is obviously disappointed about what’s happened and the first thing we are going to have to do is pick his head up,” said Barrett.

“I’m looking forward to forging a good partnership with him and when he comes back in I’m sure he will do well for us.”

Sorry no time for a proper reports but here’s the highlights and lows ….

Dartford crossing conducted in the middle of a hurricane with lightning and thunder crashing down all around us. It was like a scene from Macbeth and I still had to drive over the bridge !

M25 one giant puddle so had fun spraying water miles up into the air but then water must have got into the engine or something because car suddenly started losing power. It just wouldn’t do hills producing no power over 2000 revs.

Stop for coffee at Fleet services on M3 improved things a little but with the sky chucking bathwater down on us no chance to dry engine out so ‘interesting’ journey past Stonehenge and to Yeovil.

Paid our regular visit to the Fleet air museum for dinner. Food good but prices no longer competitive so we may look for a pub on future visits.

Despite the forecasts Yeovil was covered in dark forbidding clouds with the wind still blowing at gale force. Had nothing to cover my head and ears so was forced to buy a Yeovil hat !

Open terraces, wind coming straight at us. Very cold and wet, but a cup of hot chocolate went a long way to easing that. Denzil caused confusion to the catering staff when they mistook the flash of his camera  for a short somewhere amongst their equipment. So whilst they desperately tried to identify what was liable to blow up at anytime (I did helpfully offer to eat all their electrically damaged meat pies )  Denzil innocently carried on taking photos of the pictures of the Southend players that they had pinned to the wall.

Later, whilst Denzil was wandering about somewhere,  we spotted a new face on the pitch. Mildy helpfully told us his name and his history  so upon Denzils return we pointed our new player out informing him that Dervite was back ! And, despite all the evidence, different height, colour and build he swallowed our story hook line and sinker. So much so that he hurried off to spread the news to supporters who alas didn’t let him down too gently when they revealed the flaws in his story. Crestfallen and swearing he returned to find us creased up in hysterics. Shouldn’t do it but what else are Denzils there for ?

Very even game in the conditions. Officials making up the difference. Ref was very weak, giving in to home crowds calls to send Morrison off. Looked a yellow card offence from where we were with Barrett clearly behind him.

We were then very much on the back leg and they had lots of chances, Mildy making some good saves to keep them at bay. However we looked comfortable and despite the ref booking both Macca and Grant in ridiculous circumstances we were holding our own.

Then following a corner that was in no way a corner they got awarded a free kick by a very home friendly linesman who although not seeing the incident had no hesitation in awarding a home free kick upon seeing two players on the ground. It had been a simple collision nothing else with their player arriving last to put Freedman on the floor. Laughable, but from the free kick a mishit shot was directing into our goal by a green and white striped arm. Somehow neither referee or inventive linesman spotting that infringement. Strange but true.

In the dying minutes Laurent scored a smashing equaliser only for it to be ruled out by the officials. Were we impressed ? Guess !

Journey home and car performed a little better so hoping that it’s just something that needs to dry out. Long discussions about our favourite food helped us get through an extremely boring England game on the radio.

9) Where can I find out more?

  Visit http://groups.yahoo.com/help/

10) Why can I not send files to the list?

One of the reasons for moving from Topica was the risk of email
viruses being spread in attachments. For this reason, and to keep
download sizes to a minimum, attachments are stripped from all list
messages.

If you want to share a file with list members then please upload it
to the list website.

11) I posted a message to the list a while ago. It still has not
arrived. Why?

a) Your messages are probably moderated and we have not yet found the
time to approve them. This is not because we dislike you but because
we may not know who you are. In the past, some numpties have joined
the list for a short period of time just to post abuse.

As soon as we consider that you have proved your worth we will allow
you to post direct to the list.

b) Contrary to popular opinion, email is not instantaneous. It can be
very fast. It can be very slow. It is possible for an email from the
UK to Australia to take less than a minute to cross the globe. It is
just as possible for an email to my neighbour to take several hours to
cross the street.

12) I have received a virus warning. What should I do with it?

There are many sites on the WWW which can let you know whether the
danger is real or imaginary.

Most emailed virus warnings are hoaxes. Visit http://vmyths.com/ for
information about how to recognise a virus hoax. If the alert did not
come from a /genuine/ computer security expert OR it urges you to
forward the letter to everyone you know then it will almost certainly
be a hoax.

Send hoax emails to hoaxkill@... They will then attempt to
contact the people who forward these emails and enlighten them.

You can also send them to HoaxFYI@... so that they can keep
track of trends in the world of hoaxsters.

13) I live miles away from Southend. How can I watch the goals?

You could subscribe to BluesWorld (via the SUFC website) or...

Just thought some of you might be interested in this for some of your exiles.
You can get all the local ITV channels on your mini dish by following the

goals on the local news on Monday night. I only know Tyne Tees number (102-6)
but you can go through them to find the right one. Best to do it when local news
is on though as you can tell which area it is then.

Shrimpers drop inevitable

http://nln24.com/news/story/shrimpers-drop-inevitable

Friday 13th November 2009

HARWICH & PARKESTON may have to step backwards before they can move forward, club stalwart Tony Armstrong is saying.

The Shrimpers caretaker-boss is conceding that his side can no longer compete at Ridgeons League Premier Division level, as testified by their dismal total of one point from 16 games.

And he feels that in order to have a future, the club have to seriously consider dropping down a level.

Armstrong, who has been involved at The Royal Oak since 1966, is telling the Harwich and Manningtree Standard can’t see a future without a Harwich and Parkeston.

“However, there are serious indications that we might not be able to compete at this level much longer.

“We need to reassess what level we can play at, because it appears we’re punching above our weight in the premier division.

“Attendances tell you how many people are interested and I’d say we’ve reached a critical point in the history of the club, in terms of what direction we go down in order to take it forward.

“Things will hopefully become a bit clearer by the end of the month, but for now we’ve just got to keep going on limited resources.

“However, that’s extremely difficult and we have to give serious consideration to the prospect of taking one or two steps backwards before we can move forward.”

Yeovil Town play their first home match for almost a whole month tomorrow when they host Southend United at Huish Park in a League One fixture. The wonders of the fixture computer, combined with the FA Cup draw have ensured three consecutive Saturdays on the road with the last match being the October 17th 3-1 win over Carlisle United.

Now it's time for home comforts, where Yeovil have picked up a steady record this season with just one defeat in the League all season, with Swindon Town the only club to pick up maximum points at Huish Park. Whilst the heavy defeat at Elland Road and last weekend's FA Cup exit at Oxford United's Kassam Stadium will have dented morale a bit following a six game unbeaten run, it is matches at Huish Park where they have looked the most comfortable this season.

Southend's form is fairly mixed, although it's to manager Steve Tilson's credit that he has managed to steady the club through a worrying time that saw the club inches away from administration on the back of a 2.135m tax bill, with a transfer embargo accompanying it. Three wins in their last five matches see them currently in 10th place in the League One table, but just two points ahead of Yeovil in 14th. Like the Glovers, last weekend saw them exit the FA Cup with Gillingham providing their scalp by a 3-0 scoreline.

Their squad has been hit recently by injury, suspension and more fundamentally a transfer embargo. Tilson has indicated that with the HMRC bill now paid up that he would like to bring in more players and so the expectation was for loan signings to be made. As yet though, these have yet to materialise, and the club have yet to absolutely confirm that the embargo has been lifted.

They will have top scorer Lee Barnard back in their squad, as well as midfielder Alan McCormack who both missed last weekend's match through single match suspensions caused by an accumulation of five yellow cards. Osei Sankofa (knee) and Jean-Yves M'Voto (hip) are definitely out, leaving Tilson's only question mark over left-back Johnny Herd who suffered a muscle spasm in last week's FA Cup match. A scan has indicated that he has not torn his hamstring, but the Shrimpers are not 100 percent confident he will be able to play tomorrow, and lean towards him being left behind in Essex.

Playing Southend is often a little bit of an old boys reunion, and tomorrow will see goalkeeper Steve Mildenhall, midfielder Jean Francois Christophe, winger Kevin Betsy and striker James Walker all aim to play against their former club.

As for the Glovers, once again little is known about the current status of injured players. Striker Dean Bowditch is definitely available, although most likely will sit on the substitutes bench. Defender Stefan Stam (knee), left-back Nathan Smith (ankle), winger Scott Murray (calf) and striker Gavin Tomlin (groin) were all missing for last weekend's match at Oxford, but there is no firm indication of how soon they will be back, with Skiverton only indicating that he lost three of them the day before the FA Cup match. Aidan Downes (shoulder and knee) remains the club's only long term absentee.

Another question mark remains over goalkeeper Alex McCarthy, with Skiverton stating yesterday that he had not had any indication over whether the Reading loanee would be allowed to leave the England Under-21 squad early and return to Huish Park in time for tomorrow's game. McCarthy is unlikely to play in the match at Wembley, but on the other hand manager Stuart Pearce has hinted that he sees the 'Wembley experience' as being an important part of his players' development. If McCarthy is not released, then Richard Martin will be between the sticks again.

Elsewhere, Skiverton has hinted that his side are working on a change of tactics or formation for tomorrow's match. The 4-4-1-1/4-2-3-1 formation has worked well for the Glovers, having been a key part of their six match unbeaten run, but the last two matches have seen that tactic creak at the seams a little, particularly in the absence of Scott Murray, requiring Jonathan Obika to fulfil an unfamiliar role. Most tactics tend to have a shelf life to them before they get sussed and counteracted by opposition scouts and after two defeats now may be the right time for Skiverton to try and spring a few surprises. What that will be will inevitably depend upon the above injury list. The only cast iron certainties are the selection of the same back four, along with Shaun MacDonald, Jean-Paul Kalala and Ryan Mason. What gets built around them is anyone's guess until the game kicks off.

Previous meetings have not been too kind to the Glovers, with Southend having grabbed 0-2, 0-3 and 1-2 victories on their last three trips to Huish Park. November 2004 was the last time Yeovil had home joy against the Shrimpers. However, the last time the two clubs met, an Aaron Brown 6th minute goal set up an improbable gutsy
1-0 win for Yeovil despite losing two players to injury during the game and Aidan Downes to a red card.

The match kicks off at 3.00p.m. and tickets for the game are available on the day, subject to the usual matchday surcharge. If you want to take advantage of the pre-match price, call the Huish Park Ticket Office before 6.00p.m. tonight. As a slight warning, heavy rain is forecast in the Somerset area tonight and tomorrow morning. With Tuesday night's County Cup match having suffered a waterlogged pitch, we'd suggest that you check before you leave your home tomorrow in case there are any pitch inspections planned. At present there are none, but if that position changes, we'll provide updates on this news page.

Complaint Of The Day
As published on 'The Fishy', a Grimsby Town fans' forum:

'Dear Players of Grimsby Town FC

'I am writing with regard to my absolute astonishment and disbelief as to the sheer magnitude of your complete lack of talent and failure to carry out the job for which you are paid to do. I am not aware of any swear word or other derogatory phrase in my current vocabulary which comes close to a description of your 'performance' (and I use that term loosely) this afternoon, but let me just say that you have collectively reached a level of inadequacy and ineptitude that neither I nor modern science had previously considered possible.

'In fact I recall a time, in my youth, when I decided to call in sick at work and instead spent the entire day in my one bedroom flat wearing nothing but my underpants, eating toast and w***ing furiously over second-rate Scandinavian porn. Yet somehow, I still managed to contribute more to my employer in that one Andrex-filled day than you complete bunch of toss-baskets have contributed to this club in your entire time here.

'I would genuinely like to know how you pathetic little p***flaps sleep at night, knowing full well that you have taken my money and that of several thousand others and delivered precisely f**k all in return. I run a business myself, and I believe I could take any 4,000 of my customers at random; burn down their houses, impregnate their wives and then dismember their children before systematically sending them back in the post, limb-by-limb, and still ensure a level of customer satisfaction which exceeds that which I have experienced at Blundell Park at any time so far this season.

'You are a total disgrace, not only to your profession, not only to the human race, but to nature itself. This may sound like an exaggeration, but believe me when I say that I have passed kidney stones which have brought me a greater level of pleasure and entertainment than watching each of you worthless excuses for professional footballers attempt to play a game you are clearly incapable of playing, week-in, week-out.

'I considered, for a second, that I was perhaps being a little too harsh. But then I recalled that I have blindly given you all the benefit of the doubt for too long now. Yes, for too long you have failed to earn the air you've been breathing by offering any kind of tangible quality either as footballers or as people in general. As such, I feel it's only fair that your supply runs out forthwith.

'I trust, at this precise moment in time, that Mr Fenty is in his office tapping away on the Easyjet web site booking you all one-way flights to Zurich, complete with an overnight stay with our cheese eating friends at Dignitas. Don't bother packing your toothbrush - you won't need it.

'In the event that our beloved chairman can't afford the expense (understandable given that he's soon going to have to assemble a new squad from scratch), then I am prepared to sell my family (including my unborn child) to a dubious consortium of Middle Eastern businessmen in order to pay for the flights. Christ, I'll drive you there myself, one-by one, without sleep, if I have to.

'Failing that, understanding that most dubious Middle Eastern businessmen are tied-up purchasing Premier League football clubs, I ask you to please take matters into your hands. Use your imagination, guys - strangle yourselves or cover yourself in tinfoil and take a fork to a nearby plug socket, or something. Just put yourselves and us fans out of our collective misery.

'So, in summary, you pack of repugnant, sputum-filled, invertebrate b***ards; leave this club now and don't you f**king dare look back. You've consistently demonstrated less passion and desire than can commonly be found within the contents of a sloth's scrtum, so frankly you can just all f**k off - don't pass go, don't collect your wages, don't ever come back to this town again.

'I look forward to you serving me at my local McDonald's drive-thru in the near future.

'Yours sincerely
A very disillusioned Mariner'

In case you were also wondering, Grimsby are currently second-bottom of the Football League having won just one of their eight home matches this season.

THE X Factor twins John and Edward have been the talk of the country again this week.

And they have also been one of the main talking points at our training ground.

For the strong rumour going around is that they are in fact triplets not twins and the missing brother is our very own Lee Barnard.

Most people think that Barney wasnt playing at Gillingham in the FA Cup last weekend because he was suspended after picking up five yellow cards but the truth was he was on X-Factor performing Ghostbusters on stage.

To be honest, hes worse at dancing and singing than them and the only way you can actually tell them apart is because Barney is the only one with the broken nose.

Hes been getting all kinds of stick about it just recently from the lads and really doesnt like it so I think its only fair I share this with you in the paper!

FRUSTRATION AT FA CUP EXIT

IT was disappointing to lose at Gillingham last weekend in the first round of the cup.

But we had a patched up team and it was always going to be difficult for us.

We had young players being asked to do a job and others out of position so it was certainly far from being ideal.

The defeat means were now just concentrating on the league.

And we want to get back to winning ways at Yeovil Town on Saturday.

We have Alan McCormack back from suspension and Lee Barnard back from being on X Factor so thats a plus as they are two big players for us.

Weve done well at Yeovil over the last few seasons as well and it would be great to keep that going this weekend.

ZOMBIES AND BAD SINGING

AS everyone knows we have a small squad right now and that has led to a few of the youth players being called up.

That also means they have had to perform a song in front of the first team its part of Blues player initiation and they havent all been that good.

Kyle Asante did one and so did Callum Whittaker, but he was rubbish.

It just sounded like he was speaking and his routine was in fact interrupted by one of the lads asking if he had started yet or if he was still on the phone to his mum.

We also had a bit of a Halloween theme party at mine last weekend and a few of them seemed to enjoy dressing up maybe a little bit too much.

Simon Francis and his girlfriend came in matching his and hers zombie costumes and they seemed very sweet.

SOUTHEND United midfielder Alan McCormack is hoping to put the problems of the last few weeks behind him at Yeovil Town on Saturday.

The central-midfielder missed the Shrimpers FA Cup first round defeat to Gillingham through suspension after notching up five bookings.

And the recent financial problems surrounding Blues have also had an impact on the 25-year-old player off the pitch.

But McCormack is preying things will get better as he strives to regain his top form.

I havent played as well as I can and I think lots of people would say that, admitted McCormack.

My passing hasnt been like what it should and, although Im not playing badly, I know Im capable of better.

His next chance to impress comes at Yeovil and McCormack cannot wait for kick-off against the Glovers.

Having to sit and watch the boys at Gillingham was very hard to take last week, he said.

The Yeovil game cant come fast enough now and we want to go there and get all three points.

McCormack picked up his fifth booking of the campaign during the 1-0 League One win over Gillingham on October 30.

And that led to him serving a one-match suspension when the two teams played again in the FA Cup at the Priestfield Stadium on Saturday.

But, despite the ban, McCormack feels he has improved his disciplinary record which has been much worse in his past seasons with the Shrimpers.

I think Ive calmed down a lot, said McCormack.

I dont make the stupid challenges I used to when I was a bit younger and Im not as full blown as I was either but maybe that has taken something away from my game.

But McCormack admitted his Southend colleagues have had more than just their football to worry about this season.

The 25-year-old has been among those being paid late this term by the cash-strapped Shrimpers.

And that has made life off the pitch just as tough as on it for the Irishman.

Its hard when youre getting paid 10 to 12 days late because we arent earning Premier League money, said McCormack.

We have mortgages and bills to pay just like everyone else and a few of us have missed a few payments which is never good with the banks.

Its been worrying wondering if you have enough money to buy food and of course it does affect you.

Weve been paid now for last month which is great but were still owed bonuses from the start of the season and hopefully that can be sorted out as well.

Blues poor financial position also almost saw them enter administration last week but they were able to pay off a 2.1 million debt to the tax man just in time.

Despite the difficulties, the team remain 10th in the League One table and McCormack insisted the problems had helped bring the players closer together.

Weve had regular meetings about our situation and it was decided that we just had to go out and give our all no matter what was happening, said McCormack.

We owe that to our supporters too. They have been magnificent again and in our last game against Gillingham the noise they made was incredible and it really did make a difference to us.
