WALSALL'S slide out of the League One play-offs race gathered pace after a flatteringly slight defeat to substantially superior Southend United.

The victory margin was as narrow as can be. But when a team takes 82 minutes to force the opposing goalkeeper into a save, as the Saddlers did here, one goal will generally be enough to see them off.

Holding on to a 1-0 lead, especially in an important promotion tussle, can be a tense, nervy business. One slip and it's gone.

But there was nothing tense and nervy about this.

Depleted by illness and injury and drained of form and confidence, Walsall were punchless.

They would not have scored had they played until Southend Pier falls down - and that gloriously resilient structure, built in 1830, has survived fires, boat crashes and the Luftwaffe and is up for keeps.

Southend were always in control. Unbeaten in nine games, at the vital stage of the season they have got used to winning. Walsall, two points from six games, have got used to not winning.

The only surprise was that Southend scored only once, although the goal, when it arrived 90 seconds after half-time, rewarded the best move of the match.

Mark Gower's pass sent Wolves loanee Charlie Mulgrew racing to the byline. The impressive Mulgrew delivered a great low cross and Anthony Gerrard turned the ball over his own line under pressure from Lee Barnard.

It was an advantage Walsall never threatened.

With Edrissa Sonko, Darren Wrack, Michael Dobson and Kevin Betsy ill or injured, manager Richard Money turned to youth, restoring Mark Bradley, Richard Taundry, Alex Nicholls and Troy Deeney to the starting XI.

But the Saddlers' loss of impetus is total and collective. The group looks jaded.

That remarkable rise from 24th to fourth in four months took a lot out of the squad.

And, of course, the club's relentless pragmatism took Scott Dann and Danny Fox out of the squad.

There was very little to excite the 339 travelling Walsall fans. The first half brought only one Walsall threat on goal. That came from Richard Taundry - and the threat was to his own goal. Luckily, his bullet header was blocked.

Southend created and squandered chances before the break but when they made the breakthrough straight after it the noble 339 might as well have headed for the M25.

That long unbeaten away record mid-season seemed a long, long time ago.

I know what you mean.  Being only one up always keeps you on the edge of your seat but, even so, I can honestly say that Saturday's game was one of the best all round team performances I've seen for some time.  There were very few mis-placed passes, all the Blues seemed to be giving it their all and even when anyone did give the ball away they were immediately pinning back their ears to get back and make up for their mistake and generally winning the ball back in the process.

The flow of the game was helped considerably by the officials who all contributed to a good performance - now how many times have we been able to say that at the hall this season - and I really enjoyed a hearty sing-song with the boys towards the north end of the west stand, just as I did during the Swansea game.

As a team we played some great attacking football and were unusually patient with our build up play.  Both Francis and Mulgrew were pushing forward nicely and overlapping well, while Gower and Black were both happy to switch the play around and go on crossfield runs to create openings.  Bailey and McCormack were very aware of eachother's forward runs meaning we were never exposed at the back while Barnard and Walker's work off the ball was creating enough space for the midfield to drive in to.  I accept that the opposition weren't up to much but, apart from a 5 or 6 minute spell in and around our box about 15 minutes from time, I never really felt that Barrett, Clarke and Flavs were troubled to any extent.

Because I felt everyone gave it their all I don't think I could pick a man of the match, so instead I'm gonna hand out a 'Mare of the Match' award to Walsall's big centre back, Ian Roper, who had a succession of mis-kicked clearances, defensive headers that when straight up instead off away and so many mis-placed passes that either went to a Blues player or bobbled pathetically out of touch for a throw.  And, off course, though I didn't realise it at the time but, having watched the goal on telly Sunday morning it was actually he who got the last touch to put the ball past his own keeper.  Thanks Ian, keep up the good work.

UTB!

SOUTHEND United's under-16 side have won the La Portel Cup in France.

The youngsters worked their way to the final with a series of fine performances and eventually beat AIK Stockholm 2-0 in the final.

"The commitment and attitude of the players was fantastic throughout the tournament," said youth team manager Ricky Duncan.

"We were also named the best attacking team and to go away on tour and win is a massive achievement."

Southend 1 Walsall 0

Travelling to a home game as opposed to one that is away is beginning to feel rather strange. Something, I don’t know what, just seems to be missing. It’s certainly not the Uncle Albert experience, neither is it the absence of the Rod and Marline ‘Hittherightnoteonceinten’ duet. Yet maybe it is the sum of such blips on the radar screen of life that are responsible for this feeling of imbalance. Certainly without the ’Thunderbird’ banter the journey appears somewhat tame. Yes, it’s great to be able to arrive at the ground with ears still fully functioning. Too often they have simply shut up shop in protest over of the length of an unlikely yarn or the murder of a tune, often long before signs for the A127 have vanished.  And without distant and tiring journey it’s terrific to be able to fully partake in supporting the greatest team on Earth, not to mention a spot or two of referee baiting.

But still life feels incomplete somehow, and in order to try and address this I calibrated Thunderbird II’s communication system to monitor Radio 5’s output.  Whenever we venture far from civilisations borders the Thunderbirds like to listen to the commentary of an early kick off game.  It’s not so much that we can enjoy listening to the match, instead we treat the whole thing as a training exercise.  It’s our way of warming up for the game. All the venom and hostility that we direct towards whatever clown Premiership  outfits are playing serving to get us in fine fettle for the match officials to come. So partly the action of turning on the car’s radio was to try and recreate some of the atmosphere that has been engendered at such times.

However the airwaves were flooded with strange accents. Extreme northern accents, Scottish accents to be precise.  Whining Geordie is hard enough to stomach, being almost as bad as wet Manchurian or whinging Scouse but tartan wearing tonsils are right down there with whale grunts. Bagpipes were only invented to stop them talking ! And so hearing a pair of Jimmy’s giving it the ‘Loch Ayes’ over some local porridge stirrer’s tussle, referred to as a game between the ‘Old Firm’, didn’t really engender  the ambience that I was seeking. Sure there was no lack of material to extract the urine out of. Every kick of the ball being described in prose so over the top that every sentence was served up to its nouns’ in snow.  To listen to it, you really do start to wonder why FIFA ever bother holding a World Cup as surely every Scottish player, right down to the kitsman’s pet dog, has so much skill that no other country stands a chance. It’s all bull manure and delivered in such a way as to make even Jimmy Tarbuck stick his arm down his throat. Why did the BBC think for one minute that tax payers in the South wanted to hear how it was being spent in the North ? There again perhaps they are planning to transmit coverage of one of our games against Colchester up to them sometime in the future. Yeah !!  that’s about as likely as Uncle Albert ever buying a gag ! So the radio got turned off.

Fortunately traffic was surprisingly light and so soon the floodlights of Roots Hall appeared upon the horizon. Thought s now really started to concentrate upon the game to come. Up at their place it had literally been a stroll in the park for us. Cruising to a 2 – 0 victory without even Bailey’s shirt getting damp. It had been really easy but today, no way. Walsall’s form since that defeat has been good enough to get them rising up the table to a position close to ours. Accordingly, although now going through a bit of a slump in form, they would be really up for it. The good news was that both teams like to play attractive football, so no lumping of the ball to look forward to then ! The bad news was that the skies were clouding over and that all the hot air emitting from Haggis hunting country was causing the wind to get up.

From even further afield than from where cattle have to clench their thighs together tightly, hailed Mickey Pierce.  Avoiding the chaos of Heathrow’s new Terminal 5 his German taxi driver had landed his plane at Stanstead instead. And Mickey was now taking full advantage of his trip to ‘Blighty’ by fitting in a visit to the Hall.  This meant that for once all the Thunderbirds were together for a game ! Actually his wife was missing from the line up, but, as her interest lies mainly with the form of United’s model keeper, I think it’s possibly to ignore that slight omission.

Rodney must have adjusted his time piece a day early because for once he managed to arrive at his seat before the players had finished their warm up routines. Unfortunately, Hal Robson-Kanu’s strain injury was exacerbated during these exercises and so a last minute change to the team saw Barnard making a welcome return up front.

In a repeat of recent games Blues totally dominated the opening phases of the game. Walsall hardly being able to emerge from their half of the field at all. And whilst Mrs Pierce would undoubtedly have enjoyed watching Darryl go through his gym routines, it’s highly unlikely that the visiting manager’s mind was as delighted at this evidence of his teams inability to even provide him with an opportunity to take a goal kick or two.  Life wasn’t all chuckles for the Blues though, because although bossing the game to such a degree that had it been a boxing match the referee would already have brought things to a halt, we were not really bothering their goalkeeper all that much either.

It wasn’t for lack of effort, every Blue’s heart was pumping. Their pulse rates matching those of David Mellor whenever he donned his Chelsea shirt. Both Walker and Barnard were working intelligently to make good runs into the area, Gower was on fire out on the wing, midfield was a becoming merely a generic term for Macca and Bailey,(Their Walsall counterparts not getting a touch), and Barrett, along with Francis, was spending so much time in their oppositions half that at times we were back in the 50’s with five, sometimes six. forwards descending down upon the North Bank goal with evil on their mind.

It really was back against the walls stuff for the visitors and how the score line remained virgin was beyond everyone fortunate enough to watch this game. Quite possibly the Walsall contingent, some 200+ or so who watched the game in near silence , were not enjoying it as much as us, but the match was a good advert for football at any level. Lots of action, good tackles, fine passing and. at times. some delicious skill.  Particularly from W.B.A loanee left back  Charlie Mulgrew who, despite featuring in Scotland’s midweek U21 game, was full of energy and drive. Equally some of his foot skills were sublime, possibly even himself not knowing sometimes quite how he bewildered his markers to leave them stranded in his wake.

Walker went close, running onto a lobbed ball from Bailey, but his shot went wide of the target. Clarke had a header cleared off the line, whilst Barrett, bursting into the area, was dismayed to see his goal attempt miss its target. Then came United’s 1966 moment as a wonderful shot from outside the area by Gower bounced down off the bar and ‘over’ the line. By a strange co-incidence, well in any other circle than the Thunderbirds where it’s taken as pretty much as read, Trigger had that very morning been doing statistical research and so had watched the England Germany World Cup final all over again. His verdict was that the ball hadn’t crossed the line then, and neither had it today. With no observant linesman, Russian or any other creed, to hand, the referee had no option but to sadly agree. Mike though was not so happy with either Trigger’s historical or happening views, expressing his firm opinion that we had been robbed. No fan of goal line electronic devices he was nevertheless quite critical of its human equivalent upon the far touchline.  Later, video evidence did indeed show that the ball had been well over the line, and so Blues should have gone into the break at least one goal up, but the score was still stuck at  0 – 0 as the halftime whistle blew.

For once the Blue Belles were only distractedly observed as deep tactical discussions took place on the terraces. Walsall were simply not playing the game! and it was quite unreasonable of them not to have conceded at least three goals by now. We were their hosts, did they have no idea about how polite visitors to the Hall behaved?.  Keep on like this and they would be in every danger of being struck of out Christmas card list.

Someone, so far off our lists that any cards to him would have Father Christmas in a green suit was the referee. Not so much for this game’s performance which was rather in and out, a bit like Rodney thinking of Nobby Stiles knees, but more because he was the creature that greased onto the pitch away at Orient. The Thunderbirds recalled how he had mistaken Orient for Man Utd ( Just how??) and so kept the game going until they had scored their equaliser. Accordingly they had been extremely unhappy to see his name down in the program.  In fact Mike had booed him from well before kick off, somewhat to the surprise of those in nearby seats who didn’t know the history.

But today, although some of his decisions were still way off base, in general he performed a mite better. Oh that his compatriot running the line in front of the East Stand (Crash dummies to a man) had been better sighted for Gower’s goal  though! Especially as Walsall were going to have the wind behind them for the second half and were bringing on substitutions just to take advantage of that fact. Flahavan looked like being a mite busier this half !

And so it proved to be. Blues had totally ruled the first half, but now the game looked to be much more even. Possibly it was the wind direction, again the substitutions might have been inspired, but there was no doubting that, having survived more scares than a lady of the night without protection, Walsall were now out to punish Blues for their largesse in not scoring. Fortunately though ,we were of another mind.

The attack looked innocent enough at first. Walsall had been pressing forward, but bright midfield play by Bailey and McCormack had seen them off. The ball finding its way to Gower on the halfway line who looked around for someone to play it too.  He found the dazzling feet of Blues left back, Mulgrew, who wasted no time in sprinting down the wing, past the bemused Walsall defence,  to  reach almost the goal line before putting over a terrific pin point low cross into the box. There awaiting just such an opportunity lurked Barnard, and although closely marked, he somehow got just enough touch on the ball to guide it past Walsall’s despairing goalkeeper and into the net. 1 – 0 to the Super Blues, let the goal fest begin !!

Walsall though tightened up their lines, and with nothing now to defend, went on almost all out attack. A great spectacle for the neutral perhaps, but concern amongst the Thunderbirds grew as our forays into the visitors half of the field became rarer and rarer. That is not to suggest that our goalkeeper was any busier than he had been in the first half because Southend’s back four were proving themselves to be more than capable at keeping the Walsall attacks at bay. And, so after a brief period of time United regained the upper hand. The match stats of the away side having  just 4 pops at goal against our 18 telling the story.

It was becoming quite remarkable that the score line was remaining static. Walsall’s goalkeeper was having a tremendous game, almost the only man standing between Blues and a goal tally that went into double figures. Francis had a powerful long range strike brilliantly turned over the bar, Macca was left holding his head after the keeper somehow kept two of his efforts away from their target and with Bailey, Walker, Barrett and Barnard all having good opportunities to increase their teams score 1 – 0 was becoming a frustrating statistic.

Eventually  Black, Gower and Barnard’s tired legs were replaced by fresh faces namely Grant ,Moussa and Scannell.  But as the game was entering its final scenes they really only had walk on parts.  A sting to the tale was still possible though, especially as three extra minutes were to be played. And for almost the first time in the match we appeared unable to find our forwards. As a result a modicum of pressure was applied to the Blues goalmouth as clearances were being returned straight back.  Those of us who have been on the journey long enough to witness Uncle Albert’s incessant chatter become nonsensical natter become incoherent mumble, with accompanying dribble, are now accomplished campaigners  at this 1 – 0 nail biting finish lark.  Still we don’t exactly enjoy it and so it was with some relief that the final whistle was heard.

Blues now are up to fourth in the table. Doncaster, in third position, look unassailable but just as long as we can keep playing like this then our hopes of securing a play off place look pretty darn realistic. Terrific work Blues !!

For all the huff and puff and shots on goal, only one score. I suspect someone is going to get really thrashed on of these days when these goals start going in, but not putting the opposition away with a second goal leaves things very vulnerable at the end...nd shortens my life! Please score dear boys!

I admit I am a Southend United addicted fan for life.  But I am in therapy and now also support Toronto FC in the M.L.S.  We are in the Playoff run in. Could it be?

But we are what the second or third highest scorers in our league -
just that the goals are really well distributed. I reckon only
Flahavan and Mulgrew of the present starting XI haven't scored. This
wasn't a squeaky 1-0 win today nor was it heart stopping. It was a
win of almost total domination from start to finish and there was no-
one, yes no-one that the boo boys could latch onto, Sleep easy!

And he was pretty good - bit fussy on ball placement for free kicks.
The linos were good and decisive too - actualy the three of them made
quite a good team.... for once

Swindon 0 Southend 1

Usually Thunderbird launches are fairly uneventful. Sure a bit of casual planning goes on beforehand with Boycie always wanting to know take off times etc at least a month before a flight takes place. But other than that the two pilots generally just sort things out inbetween themselves.  On this occasion though things started falling to pieces well before ever even a starter motor got fired.

For kick off no one could agree on what time we should set off. Mike, keeping a weather eye upon the fact that we would be travelling both on a Bank Holiday and in forecasted snow storms was all for leaving early. The opposing camp, captained by Denzil whose alarm clock doesn’t recognise any digits lower than 10, didn’t want to leave until much later. Then there was the problem of where the two craft should meet up. Rodney, wanting to fly South for the winter, desired to go around the giant roundabout, known as the M25, clockwise, whilst everyone else wanted to travel Northwards.  And this was rather important because the decision would determine the location of Tracy Island II, an abandoned supermarkets car park or a woodland park.

Emails flew between the Thunderbirds like racing pigeons, with each side fiercely fighting their corner. At this point Mike sensibly ran away, well to more precise went on a training course for a couple of days  leaving them to it.  This meant that, although he was the last to find out the final decision(s), he at least had a peaceful time of it. Anyway finally everything was resolved, a departure time had been all agreed as had the location of not only Tracy Island II but  also the fact that everyone was going to meet up there.

Then things started going wrong … Thunderbird I wasn’t very well. It had been submitting sick notes to Rodney for some time but lacking conclusive proof in the form of a doctor’s certificate (Something that would involve a potentially expensive trip to a garage) its various coughs and other complaints were ignored. Now man, or rather engine, flu had struck and TBI was refusing to get out of bed. We were down to just one car and unless people fancied travelling 2nd class up on the roof we had a problem Houston !

Fortunately Denzil volunteered the use of his new car and with Thunderbird IV all revved up to undergo its maiden voyage it was all blues skies again and everything appeared pacific. Except that a Kraken in the triform of Rodney, text messages and an email then arose from the depths to once again drench everything in confusion.  It shouldn’t have mattered that he was still in electronic postie mode, sending out of date news around everywhere because Mike and Denzil had sorted everything out with a single phone conversation. Unfortunately though our frenetic touchpad clicker was still persisting in hitting the keys like a wino thumping the flat end of a bottle.  Getting instant gratification in the form of total chaos.

Because, although it had been agreed that both pilots would await their passengers at Tracy Island II, on the day they were stranded at Tracy Island I. And despite well documented evidence that Rodney had agreed to transport them over to the second island he was strenuously denying this to be the case. Without any form of transport other than shanks pony, available to them they started walking West, a bitingly cold wind only making things all the more merrier. Hearing of their plight the two Thunderbird pilots, after expressing heartfelt concern at their plight (Like yeah !!)  sped to their rescue and so finally we were on our way to Swindon after a somewhat delayed departure.

As it happened the delay was not costly, the roads proving to be very easy and so the time lost was quickly regained. So much so in fact, that a very leisurely breakfast could be enjoyed at a service station on the M4.  The appearance of this food oasis was doubly welcome because it also meant that Rodney could give up on his attempts to pronounce foreign players names. We had intended to play a travelling version of Trivial Pursuit but the question cards had been so cunningly squirreled away by Uncle Albert on a previous trip that they were proving difficult to find. Fortunately, well at least it seemed to be at the time, a football centric quiz game was to hand and ‘Question Master’ Rodney soon had things under way. Bamber Gascoigne he ain’t. If there was a way of twisting a tongue around a name anywhere South of Dover then Rodney could perform it. It was so hilarious listening to him try and splutter a name out that Boycie often couldn’t resist having him repeat the question. Marvellous stuff but it couldn’t last and as the questions became more and more Premiership based so we began to lose interest. That’s when the sound started !

At first it was only a high pitched whine, but this soon built up to something that I can only describe as being akin to the sound that I imagine is produced whenever a freshly castrated elephant  takes a pee. Marlene, somewhat disconcerted by a her failure,(Described in a previous report) to produce a note that would be recognised in musical circles, was giving it another try. We were not grateful, and we became even less so when Rodney, giving up on saying a Brazilian players name (It was Pele !), joined in. Two cats, joined at the hip and dancing upon a hot tin roof whilst being hosed down with freezing water could not have produced anything as dreadful as this sonically challenged duo.  Giving some computer generated background music though they could make it the charts though !

Swindon Town’s ground was only an hour or so away and so soon we were parking up in the visitor’s car park which is right next to the ground. Even though his noshers had been given a thorough work out at the service station our travelling stomach, better known as Uncle Albert, wanted to provide them with more exercise. Barely had he lighted up the stub end of a fag, something that was born of a cigarette packet at least five smokes ago, but he his feet were shuffling at carpet scolding speed towards the nearest bacon butter stall. Well at least it kept him quiet. Poor Denzil had been his suffering chauffeur all the way up and was trying to work out a transfer deal that would result in the gabbling O.A.P not drowning out his car radio on the way home. There were no takers !

When we had first purchased our tickets for the game we had not been too chuffed to find out that we would be seated in a stand that looked across the goal mouth rather than being seated behind it. But having entered the ground we were now of a completely different mind as an artic wind with teeth filed on glaciers was blowing directly down the length of the pitch. Several ball boys dispatched to collect the results of misplaced shots looked far from happy with their mission. Even a polar bear would have balked at that team talk !

Blues kicked off into the wind, attacking the goal at the far end of the ground from where about 500 of their fans were sited. In many ways it was a repeat of the opening scenes of the game at Huddersfield with Southend fully taking the game to their hosts.  Unfortunately though, for all our neat approach play, there was no final ball and so the Swindon goalkeeper’s gloves remained untested. Indeed the home side rarely broke out of their half but it was noticeable, and slightly worrying, that each time they did, so a goal attempt would result.

Just why we weren’t shooting was a bit of a puzzle as we were getting into good positions. However for some reason we appeared to want to walk the ball into the net rather than chance a snap shot. Fortunately Francis had not read that particular page in the book and so when he eluded his marker some 30 yards out from goal, and cut inside to get a sight of the goal he had no hesitation in trying a shot at goal.  Fortune favours the brave and the ball was heading nicely in the direction of the net when a deflection off a home defender spun it up into the air and over the goalkeepers head.

From where the Southend supporters were sitting it looked to be going over the bar. Accordingly there was no immediate reaction to the ball crossing over the goal line, but then, as the United players began celebrating so, the roof went off in our bit of the ground. Turned out that most people had thought that we had scored but as no one else was giving it one they thought they had been mistaken. But with Francis buried under a pile of what appeared to be every Blues player on the pitch there was no mistaking the fact that Blues were 1 – 0 up !

What happened next was rather strange. Often, having taken the lead we simply sit back and start resting on our laurels. But on other occasions we press forward eager to score more goals. Today, in this game, we somehow achieved a little of both.  Managing to look both disinterested and dangerous at the same time … rabid teddy bears you might say !

Swindon’s game didn’t change much though. Unable to prevent our midfield from winning almost every ball they tried lofting it, only to find both Barrett and Clarke in fine form.  Meanwhile Blues, encouraged by loud support, made the occasional foray forwards. Gower, having one of his better games, experiencing little difficulty at all in beating his man before putting over a low cross that agonisingly just missed being put into the net by Hal Robson-Kanu’s outstretched foot.

Half time arrived with our hosts a goal down. This didn’t appear to upset their fans over much who applauded them off the pitch. Almost the only reaction that they had all through the half. There were no BlueBelle look a likes to entertain us during the break. Instead a competition involving youngsters trying to put the ball past the club’s mascot took place. It was really nice to see how the kids celebrated their goals, one even ran all the way over to the corner flag with outstretches arms !

Second half began and almost immediately the game nose dived. Swindon had obviously given up all hope of beating us on the ground and so the ball was now spending most of it’s time collecting cloud number plate numbers. Unusually Southend refused to get drawn into playing air ball and persevered with their ground zero football whenever they could.  It brought rewards !

A fine bit of play involving Robson-Kanu and McCormack resulted in the latter bursting into the box, the whole goal at his mercy. Alas, as he struck the ball it bobbled and so flew up and over the bar. A second goal for the Blues then and the game would have been all theirs. But Macca’s miss meant that Swindon were still in with a chance and so for a while they passed the ball outside our area, but to little effect. Then the ball broke up the other end of the field to present Walker with a chance, but his shot from a tight angle was well saved by the Swindon goalkeeper who was having quite an impressive game.

Flahavan on the other hand was almost unemployed. A few shots had come his way, an occasional cross, but generally he was having very little to do. But then, as he came out to challenge for the ball he got injured and the trainer ran onto the pitch. Collis started warming up alongside the edge of the pitch and one or two of the Thunderbirds gave him a cheer. For some obscure reason this upset a nearby coven of the Flahavan supporters club. Even funnier, they directed most of their abuse at an innocent Denzil rather then the true instigators.

Lee Barnard came on for Walker and was soon into the action, a strong Blues penalty claim unfortunately being dismissed as a result. A few minutes later he did succeed in hitting the back of the edge but the ‘goal’ was disallowed on the grounds that he was offside. An accusation that sadly has to be confirmed as being true. Still, we were buzzing around their goal again and a second goal really looked to be on the cards.

That might suggest that the introduction of Barnard had upped our game but that wasn’t really the case. The Blues supporters had wanted him to be introduced earlier in the game when our shot shy forwards were not disturbing their goalkeeper. However, coming on as he did for Walker rather than Robson-Kanu did little to change the flow of the game. In my opinion the pairing of Walker and Barnard is stronger than that of Barnard and Robson-Kanu.

In an attempt to turn the game Swindon had brought on an old blue in the form of Billy Paynter. Disappointingly his appearance was met by boo’s from the travelling Blues army.  I’ve always held the opinion that whilst he was not perhaps the best forward ever to put on a Southend shirt his efforts to be could not be faulted.  Anyway’s try as he could, he was unable to swing the game back towards his new side. And even more unfortunately, for them not us !, he missed two golden chances to do so.

He had one shot brilliantly cleared off the line by Peter Clarke. To be honest the ‘save’ was attributed to Flahavan by the Blues fans, many of whom took delight in pointing out this fact to those that had wanted Collis to be given a chance. They too thought it had been a brilliant save and were giving him warm applause. Had they known the truth however, that once again he had failed to rise to the only real challenge to his goal all game, then their reaction might have been a little different !

Then on another occasion when clean through at goal, Paynter was only able to blaze the ball high over the bar. And yes I did join in with the cheers.  Swindon were putting in a late flurry and Blues generosity in letting them off the hook by not converting the chances that had come their way earlier in the game looked in real danger of being punished. And, in almost the final moment of the game it looked as if we had !

The ball had been bouncing around the halfway line and Gower had had a good opportunity to clear it. But for some reason he opted instead to just watch as a home midfielder stole the ball away from him.  The thief, no strike that, the ‘moving’ player of this partnership advanced down upon the Blues penalty area, many of his colleagues sprinting upfield to join him. He slipped the ball wide to one of his forwards who responded by striking a powerful shot that we all feared was goal bound. It certainly evaded the efforts of the Blues keeper but fortunately it also screwed just wide of the far post. The final whistle going off almost immediately to signal not only another away win for the Blues but also quite a bit of relief amongst the travelling fans.

A very welcome three points, especially considering other results, and Blues had played well if still a mite within their capabilities. Sterner tests are ahead of us than Swindon though and if we are to secure a play off place then Southend need to start killing off games a lot earlier than the 90th minute !

Down to Sarfend tomorrow. Sarfend, the playground of the Cockneys. What a depressing thought that is - thousands of people trying desperately not to sound like Dick Van Dyke on crack - or should that be trying to sound like him?
Not that I've ever been there for a holiday, of course, but the thought of spending any length of time with anybody even remotely resembling a character from Eastenders or Birds of a Feather is somewhat less than appealing. Even worse, judging by the wife's TV viewing, it seems that Jamie Oliver has the habit of visiting with his nephews and nieces. Worst of all, it's even in Essex!
If the Saddlers are to make a final challenge for that play off slot, then the mini slump has to end now. Ian Roper's 94th minute equaliser on Monday just about kept us in the running, but it seems that he might well be the scapegoat for the sudden loss of form, with the arrival of loanee Aaron Brown from Reading. If Brown is match fit, then he is likely to start in the long serving Roper's place, something which is likely to mark the beginning of the end for one of the club's truly loyal servants. Let's hope he can get his best form back, but time is getting on for the thirty year old.
Another long serving player, Darren Wrack, must also be under pressure. Michael Dobson was easily the pick of a poor midfield on Monday and the return of Bradley from international duty and Taundry from suspension will put pressure on Wracky. Alesanne N'Dour also showed some nice touches when he came on and may well be pushing for a place.
Up front, it will be interesting to see if Money goes for two or one, and what part Stefan Moore might play, given his goals for the reserves in the week.
Team news for the Saddlers is a little sparse, as the team are travelling down to the Essex coast for an overnight stay in preparation for the game, but Ishmel Demontagnac is doubtful with a knee injury. He'd be only likely to be on the bench anyway, with Lee Holmes being the better option out wide.
Southend Manager Steve Tilson also has no new injury worries, with only newly acquired (in January) striker Alex Revell missing. He returned for the reserves after recovering from a hernia injury but is not expected to be fit enough to resume first-team duties yet
Predictions?
Southend have beaten us once already this season, of course, in our early season bad run. At that time, they looked odds on promotion candidates, but they have had their ups and downs, which means they are really competing for a play off berth. They are unbeaten in their last eight games, which doesn't bode well, but there may be a chink in their armour, in that nerves may be setting in for them too, as they have only managed draws in their last two home games. Still, that's better than 1 draw and 2 defeats in the last three!
There may be a weakness there, but the question for the Saddlers will be how well the midfield can do in both keeping the pressure off the defence and in supplying the wings with enough decent possession to create chances. We know we are capable of it, so it's time for the players to stand up and be counted.

THERE has been a lot of talk surrounding respecting referees in football just lately and I agree that it is something which needs to be improved on.

It can be frustrating when the officials make a bad decision but it does not excuse teams surrounding the ref and having a right go at them.

The Premier League teams do it and the problem is it gets screened on national television and the youngsters playing park football on a Sunday then go out and copy it.

It's not on really and I think we could learn a lot from rugby. Nothing like that goes on when they play and I can't see any reason why we shouldn't be able to do something similar in football.

I think just having the captains talking to the ref would work as well but I certainly agree that something does need to be done to stamp out what's going on at the moment.

Closer to home, we face another massive match against Walsall tomorrow.

They have their own aspirations of getting into the play-offs and it should make for an interesting afternoon.

We go into the game on the back of a good win at Swindon, where we were delighted to get a clean sheet.

We haven't had as many shut-outs as we would have liked this season but we defend as a team.

And since the line-up has become more balanced and settled it is no coincidence that our record at the back has improved.

Simon Francis got the goal at Swindon but he's taken a lot of stick over his celebration.

He tried to run away from the rest of the lads but James Walker pulled him to the ground and it looked like something out of Dancing on Ice.

He fell to the floor like it was the end of the Bolero and it certainly gave us all a laugh, just like his beard!

Franno still hasn't shaved it off and it's shocking. Our youth team manager Ricky Duncan has shown him the way with a proper man's beard but Franno can't quite do it yet as he's still going through puberty!

MIDFIELDER Alan McCormack is ready to tackle Walsall at Roots Hall tomorrow and insists there is not a side in League One who can cope with an on song Shrimpers.

Steve Tilson's side have surged up to fifth in the table with an unbeaten run of eight matches.

And McCormack is certain that Blues can beat another of their rivals.

"We're at home again tomorrow and the way we're playing at the moment we fully expect another three points," said the Irishman.

"When we play the way we can we're too much for any side in this league and we've shown just lately what we're capable of doing so long may it continue."

McCormack's own form has played a huge part in Southend moving up the standings and he has formed an excellent partnership in the centre of the park with Nicky Bailey.

"We enjoy being in there together," he said.

"We are quite similar players because we both like to attack and defend but it's working well.

"Between us we have scored 20 goals this season already which is excellent from midfield and is certainly something we are very proud of."

McCormack has netted nine of those strikes and is enjoying his most prolific season ever.

But he is still not happy and is keen to add to his tally.

"Before Christmas I set myself a target of 10 and I really want to reach double figures," said the tough-tackler.

"I had a good chance at Swindon on Monday which I should have put away but if I keep getting in there then I'm sure it will come soon, hopefully even tomorrow."

Another McCormack goal would again boost Blues' chances of finishing inside the play-offs and the midfielder is certain Southend can do it, despite their indifferent start to the season.

"After getting relegated last year it was always going to take us a while to get going again," he said.

"On top of that we had a lot of new faces who were settling in which is always going to take time.

"That's happened now and we've gelled together as a team. We're all more settled now though and on top of that the new lads who came in during January gave us all a boost and I definitely think we're going to reach the play-offs."

OUT-of-form Walsall will face one of League One's most inform sides when they visit Southend United on Saturday.

The Saddlers, just two points from the last five games, face a Southend side which is hitting form at just the right time.

Steve Tilson's team are unbeaten in eight games, were unlucky to only draw at home to leaders Swansea last Friday, and won 1-0 at Swindon on Easter Monday.

But Walsall have found Roots Hall a happy hunting ground of late - they are unbeaten in their last six visits there stretching back to 1983.

And manager Richard Money will send his team out well-prepared for a test, not just of technique, but also nerve - as will be the case in every match remaining this season as long as Walsall are still in the promotion picture.

"You will get some nervy games between now and the end of the season," Money said.

"And it's about keeping your nerve as best you can and making sure you get results.

"If you play well, you have to make sure you get the win you deserve. If you don't play well, then pick up something.

"Every week you have to prepare for a real battle. There are not that many teams in the division that are that much better than us but we are not that much better than a number of teams ourselves."

SOUTHEND United striker Alex Revell returned for the Shrimpers reserves in yesterday's 2-2 draw with Norwich City - but is not yet ready to figure for the first team.

The 24-year-old played the second half at Roots Hall after recovering from the hernia operation which left him sidelined for more than four weeks.

But he knows he cannot afford to rush back into Steve Tilson's plans.

"It's going to take time and I have to be patient," said Revell, who joined Blues from Brighton and Hove Albion during the January transfer window.

"A lot of what's going on is in my head because this is the second hernia I've had and I'm the type of person who reads too much into things.

"I shouldn't be like that and I will get there in the end. I've only had two days back in training so to get 45 minutes in for the reserves already is a bonus.

"There is still a lot of hard work ahead though and I'm going to be staying behind for extra work after training too."

Revell is desperate to figure against his former side Brighton at Roots Hall in a fortnight's time.

But even that may be unlikely.

"There is no need to rush back because the team is doing well," said Revell.

"I shall talk to the manager and the medical staff and we shall decide when I'm ready. The type of person that I am, I want it to be as soon as possible but I'm going to have to be sensible about it."

Revell was unable to help the second string secure a victory though, despite Dean Austin's side racing into a 2-0 lead.

A penalty from Lee Barnard and a close range finish from Charlie MacDonald put Southend on course for the win.

The hosts were in full control with MacDonald having another effort cleared off the line and Barnard striking the outside of the left post from just inside the penalty area.

Matt Harrold then wasted a glorious chance to make it 3-0 and the missed opportunity came back to haunt Blues as the Canaries flew back to grab a point, with Bally Smart scoring twice.

The winger pulled one back for his side in the 66th minute and, just three minutes later, the South African youngster made it 2-2 with a neat finish from close range.

Southend: Collis, Hunt, Hopkins (Byrne 86) , Liptak, Herd, Scannell, Moussa, Grant, Harrold, C MacDonald, Barnard (Revell 46). Subs not used: N McDonald, O'Keefe and Harvey.

Southend manager Steve Tilson said he was delighted with the number of his players scoring goals.

The Blues boss was speaking after defender Simon Francis scored his third goal of the season in their 1-0 victory over Swindon on Easter Monday.

He told BBC Essex: "We haven't had a striker this year who's going to score 15 or 20 goals.

"So it's important that we've scored from different areas of the park and that's what has happened this year."

Francis's strike was the 40th of the team's 60 league goals to have come from either defence or midfield this season.

With none of the teams around them recording a win on Monday, Southend's position in the League One play-offs was strengthened further.

But Tilson insisted he was not concerned about what his rivals are doing.

"Obviously there's been some good results, but I've always said we've got to look after ourselves.

"If we keep getting the results that we're after, then we shouldn't be bothered about the others."

Another well fought away win.  They sure are keeping us in the Play Off run in.  Twas nice to check the results and see the scores.   Well done to the team!!!!!

Let us hope this fine form continues!!
Ian, snowy Ontario still!!

I admit I am a Southend United addicted fan for life.  But I am in therapy and now also support Toronto FC in the M.L.S.  Optomism runs very deep in the genes. So take me for what I am. League One for this season.

I thought the wheels may well come of our great run today, as I expected Swindon would give us a tougher game than they did.

Stand outs for me where Mulgrew, Francis and the centre midfield.
The team worked well as a unit; my only possible crtiticism being our front pairings which were OK but not great.
Barratt and Clarke comfortably dealt with their poor front line, and the only Swindon player who stood out for me was McNamee, a speedy, skillfull winger.
Happily Billy Paynter was, well Billy Paynter!

So a reasonably comfortable and well controlled 3 points on the road.Pitch was sticky near the dug outs.Away support I would guess at 700-800 odd.
Home support particularly subdued, but they had very little to cheer about

UTB!

Sometimes I despair
Why would anyone travel all the way to Swindon on Easter Monday to abuse one of our own players' for the full 90 minutes?

If you were one of those group of 3 or 4 grown men sitting 2 rows back from the front who literally rained abuse on Tommy Black throughout the game I would be interested to know why.

Regular taunts ranged from "fatty" to "you f*****g fat c**t" with the odd "lazy lump of lard" and "fatty, f**k off" thrown in for good measure....and this is while we are winning!

I know he is struggling a little for form but for goodness sake he has played his part and been an ever present in our current unbeaten run. I would hate to think what abuse these fellas would hurl if things weren't going so well.
